May I ask in what program do you work or what do you recommend for graphics/animations?

Sure, while animations are not my main focus, I use After Effects mainly for simpler 2D/2.5D stuff and compositing, and Blender + Cinema 4D for pure 3D.

I know After Effects pretty well, but I would consider myself a novice in real 3D work still. I can produce sellable content, but it takes a long time... Learning more every year though. It's important to be curious, creative and open to anything if you want to be able to skip the 9 to 5 in the long run.

And do the opposite of what the "industry pros who have been in this game a long time" tell you. ;)

Thanks for taking the time to give some great advice, also very inspiring
(I laughed when you mentioned the procrastinating)
And to everyone else too, interesting to hear how others are doing:)

proofread your subject line.  ;)
Whoops!
Thanks ;D

Great insights from everyone, thanks for replying.

I am self-employed as a signwriter but have been doing  vector and animation stock for extra cash for a few years.

Would so love to do stock full-time but for now it is just a pipe dream that seems to be getting less of a possibility.

How many of you are making a living out of it? I know depends on living costs, but I am just curious if many actually do.
For me, for now, it's a nice extra small income and good to have some creative freedom (and no clients to deal with!).

Best month ever for me. They must have been playing with the search engine.

I'm curious - pretty much over the last year whenever someone has talked about a downward trend in stock - you have always piped up "OH BEST MONTH EVER FOR ME!"... is your small portfolio of video stock really always increasing like that? if so, I'm rather impressed it's doing that well, and that consistently...

Spacestockfootage has amazing animations - this is the reason his portfolio does so well

I do animated videos and vectors.

My earnings are roughly the same at Istock or more than at adobe/fotolia. (this month almost double)

But I have only 2 videos on Istock (got scared off from a ridiculously low sale) and I've got over 250 videos on adobe, and more vectors too than at istock. Shutterstock is my main earner by miles.

I am torn between my dignity and my bank balance on uploading videos to istock. Would a few low video sales include high ones or is it a slippery slope?

I know istock has a terrible reputation but then at the end of the day I need to pay bills and they earn me more.

I have to deal with clients that sometimes can be a real PITA in my day job and I rarely turn them away.

I'm still undecided!

:o

Every little bit helps... but if buyers shop around and see your videos at a cheaper price on iStock (and for a lower commission), you might lose those sales on SS and AS... and end up with less money. That's a big 'If' and nobody will know for sure before they try and measure, but that's a risk to consider.

If you're comfortable with iStock prices and commission, go for it, but if you're not then you should focus on other agencies like Pond5,  VimeoStock, Storyblocks and Dissolve who have decent prices and commissions for videos.

Or focus on SS and AS as you're doing now and spend your extra time on creating more content :)
Thanks! I've found that sales on storyblocks are as rare as chickens teeth and pond5 not massive either. Might try vimeo and dissolve then.
Thanks for your advice, much appreciated:)

Tell me, are the earnings in red returns?

OMG
What a large PITA.
Just tried to upload a vector image and had to resize it especially for SS, it's HUGE.

Tested the waters with videos, uploaded a couple. One sold for 20 cents and the other 11 cents.
Couldn't believe it.
I don't think I'll be uploading any more!

Hi, I just got an email saying footage firm Inc have submitted a 1042-s form, from a company called 1099online.
I have no idea what it is. Is it a scam email? They appear to have all my details

I don't live in the US.
Thank, suz

Edit: I see it's just the tax form for foreigners, so maybe all ok then!

Ahhhh that's why it was a raster. Thanks for that, that's a great help.

I like the free form tool but no good then for microstock!

Will see how I get on with CC2019

Hi,

I've always used the mesh or blend tool to make gradients and shadows. I tried submitting an EPS recently with gradients using the new free form tool and it got rejected. I seem to remember if you don't alter the shape after applying a gradient it should be accepted.

Has anyone got any tips on this? It would just make life a bit quicker.

Drop shadows are still not accepted I imagine?

Have tried looking in Shutterstock but there are no guide lines about it. I think Fotolia usually accepted them.

StockUploader / Re: Deepmeta or ESP
« on: September 29, 2018, 18:22 »
Thanks for replying ;)
And in regards to keywording and uploading? In Deepmeta I seem to remember having to select the appropriate keyword meanings. In ESP it seems like less hassle, just entering them. But I don't want it being less accurate if that's the case
TIA

StockUploader / Deepmeta or ESP
« on: September 29, 2018, 00:19 »
Hi,
I upload vectors to istock via ESP. Previously I used Deepmeta but ESP seems less hassle with keywording.
Was wondering if there are more benefits to using Deepmeta?
Thanks :)

I go months without sales. Got one last week. Not sure if it's a coincindence  :) but for me better 20 dollars than no dollars

I like the idea of not having to deal with clients and freedom to design what I feel like. If only it was a bit more profitable!

46
Oooo goody! Fingers crossed :)

General - Stock Video / Video codecs (boring, I know)
« on: June 20, 2018, 08:00 »
Hi,

Does anyone have any update on which codec (in after effects) can be used across all agencies?

I was using photojpeg but now that isn't an option. Or any recommendations for maybe two codecs (more time consuming but better than nothing) which are accepted by most agencies? I hear H264 isn't good for quality.

I'm using a PC so Prores isn't available.
TIA

So 1 credit is 75 pence?

I just convert 150 credits thinking it would be 150 euros roughly. It was 112 GBP, which paypal transferred to 124 EUROS.

If only my account was in euros. I live in Spain so am really dipping out after the conversion, plus paypal transfer

 :(

Hi, got a reply. Apparently I set my account from Fotolia uk (I must have just picked the English version) even though I live in Spain.

"Sadly, once the account is created on a Fotolia zone and assigned to a currency, it is not possible to change it. This affects also your Adobe Stock account, since it was migrated from Fotolia."
