« on: June 13, 2022, 04:58 »
Thankfully I now have the old, better version that doesn't require a dozen clicks to find out what I need to know. Hopefully the design team learn change doesn't always mean improvement. The earnings page is probably one of the few pages that pretty much tells me everything I need to know on the first screen.

It's not great. It's just a plain white page with grid lines which makes it hard to see, find the data you want. When you click on each day, it opens to a small box on a big screen so you have to scroll and when you do, it moves the X to close the box so it's off screen... so you have to scroll back again just to close it. And as if the scrolling a small box on a big screen isn't enough, it limits the amount of scrolling so they can have multiple pages. They must have been drunk when they came up with that one. I could be wrong but I always thought the idea of good webpage design was to reduce the number of clicks the customer/client is required to make to get to the page they want and not increase it unnecessarily?!?

All said and done, it is at a level that I've come to expect from SS so I can't really say I'm surprised!

Edit... I forgot to add that each new day is at the bottom of the screen so you have to scroll past all the other days / data before you get to the current day... and it remembers nothing on that main page of any selections you make... just to force you to make even more clicks again. I dread to think how they'll screw up the rest during the other phased releases!

Well, given how low the $ sales have been over the last 2-3 days at SS, I think I'm already contributing to the "Gift Economy"

SS about average, maybe a little less and AS performing well. IS ok, maybe a little better than average and the rest just bouncing around as they normally do

100% agree. I try edit, create motion graphics in such a way it auto picks a good thumb nail but more often than not, it picks a duff one and you just know it'll never sell. Frustrating.

March was better than Feb for me at SS, reached level 5 but poor compared to AS. Sales volume at AS is 100% more than SS and 360% more $ than SS.

Looking at my distributor sales over the last year, I can see the US and EU are ok but there are a bunch of ROW which I have a feeling maybe China. Anyway, I've removed Asia and Africa off this year and if it continues I'll remove all next year.

Adobe Stock / Re: This year CC Bonus codes program?
« on: April 01, 2022, 01:24 »
Was wondering id Adobe/Mat can confirm if there will be any Adobe CC bonus codes program this year or not?

Hi, just a quick note to let you know that I've seen this thread. I don't have any information or update to provide you with at this time about a possible 2022 bonus program. When I hear something, I will be sure to let you all know.

Thank you,

Mat Hayward

Not to harras you or anything Mat (and I'll stop, really). But this is what I mean with corporate speak :) You shush. You don't say that Adobe has not made up it's mind yet if they are not going to do it or if they are. You just leave things lingering but you say it's noted. It is not an answer. It is soothing on behalve of Adobe. And that is corporate speak in my eyes.

Harsh. Until a decision is made higher up in the company I don't see how Mat could have done anything more than he has. That is, he'll let us know as soon as he's been told.

What Adobe could do is maybe confirm whether it is going to be an ongoing bonus that will be repeated until told otherwise. Then, if it wasn't possible to continue or, the criteria changes then they can announce that X months before it is about to impact. But then... I guess... there'll be some asking if there will be any changes this year rather than accepting it is going ahead as norm ;D

Hopefully they will... hit 5k DLs earlier this month :)

SS doesn't even come close to AS anymore... both in terms of sales but also the way they treat their contributors!

Off Topic / Re: Will the Russia/Ukraine war affect sales?
« on: February 25, 2022, 10:05 »
Who cares, people are dying, this 'Will the Russia/Ukraine war affect sales?' post is ridiculous.

Unless you can do anything about the people dying, you can be concerned about both.

Very true. I feel we're living in a world where virtue signalling is king and unless you shout about how outraged you are then you're not outraged enough... and you certainly can't have any other concerns or problems in your on life.

My concern about the situation in Ukraine is real, I hope to god it comes to end quickly for the sake of all the innocents involved but make no mistake, the economic fall out of this will be felt by everyone. Let's hope peace is restored quickly.

As to the main question, it will depend on your content. If you have a lot of imagery of the region sales may go up but naturally, you cannot expect as many sales from Ukraine, they have more important things to consider. Any slowdown world wide will come down to how badly business are effected by any resulting downturn caused by sanctions, which are important and necessary. What will be will be.

Thanks Mat... much appreciated 👍🏻

Jan 2022 income up 8% compared to January 2021.

(USD comparison, not including exchange rate)

Similar here: SS earnings for Jan were 10.7% better than last year, and the total MS income for Jan was 12.3% better (and second-best January ever).

Well done.

Somebody said recently on one of these threads (think it was 'DavidK') that the difference between 10c and 38c is not really that big, the real money to be made in microstock nowadays is from large SODs. [ and video EL sales ]

Just thought I would add that here, because I was thinking the same myself at the time.  And they are still there on SS, if not more so.

The difference may not seem much when looking at one sale but, over the course of a day 50 x $0.1 = $5 where as 50x $0.38 = $19. If this consistently happens over 20 days over a month then your down $280. But yes, the bigger sales do make a bigger impact... just becoming less common on SS of late with the push to subscription models!

I sell up to 1000 DLs a month on SS, at times more, and I dont have that problem. There are quite a few people here that make over 500 DLs/month as well. By the end of January we are all on at least L4, and thats not counting the Wirestock people. At these levels, one starts to see a lot more higher subs prices up to $1/sub. I am also finding I can get much higher SODs than before. Overall my RPD for Jan was higher than the previous year.

But the point is, and the reason why I liked what DavidK said, and it was my observation as well, was that we shouldn't just focus on the 10c part - or it will drive us crazy. I doubt very much if there is anyone here with an RPD of 10c. But once again, it all depends on your own individual port.

Yeah I know. I'm also a level 4 after 2nd week in Jan. I was just making the point that with SS pushing for large subs packages (as per their own minutes), we'll see a creep towards more and more $0.10 and over time this will impact on our net take from the agency

There you go, focusing on the downside - which hasn't even happened yet.**

Lol... yeah I know :) thanks for the prod. I need to pop my headphones back on with some positive tunes while working... maybe a bit of meditation midday to improve focus.

Normally my RPD is around $0.95 and so feeling a little negative at the moment when Jan was $0.44. Strangely, last year the drop was quite small compared to normal so maybe this years January is the other extreme!

Just a shame they're not more like AS... both $ and mentality towards their contributors. The work Mat and Adobe does with their webinars shows more of a caring approach to contributors.

SS DLs about normal, 800+. $ pants... 0.44 RPD.

AS was good. Increase in DLs (+35%) and s (10%+) compared to last Jan. s comfortably in the . Even iS was up 30% compared to last Dec. Just SS going down the pan!

Sales volume isn't my issue at the moment... just on 800, which is quite normal for Jan. It's the $ that have tanked this month. It will potentially be the worst January since 2014/15 for $. About half of a normal month. Personally... I hope the choke on the extra money they've stolen from us.

The average licence price we sell for remains a significant indicator as to our approach to pricing, and the fact that it has remained stable over the last 3 or 4 years at $26-$30 in a difficult market shows a level of robustness.

Did you read anyone's consern regarding this statement you keep repeating?

Probably not... and for someone who stated he hates posting on a Friday afternoon just as they finish for the day... and how that comes over to us... he seems quite happy to do it... often!

Hi All,

The data has been pulled and looked at for the distributor in question and we can confirm they have operated within our agreement.

The images were sourced from the pool of images opted into Chinese distribution and Novel Use. The usage confirmation report included a very small % of images that had opted out or had been deleted in the time between download and use, but the vast majority of images billed remain opted into both.

The images selected have been used as part of a small business / personal template style application where users can quickly create small designs. The novel use pool was used for this as it covers low value / high volume style licence packages and our agreement with this distributor continues to limit them to the novel use pool, although there still may be some additional billing associated with images downloaded whilst opted in, that are now opted out.

These deals are done based on the fact that they are additional streams of revenue that allow our reach to grow within the market and gain ground on competitors.

The average licence price we sell for remains a significant indicator as to our approach to pricing, and the fact that it has remained stable over the last 3 or 4 years at $26-$30 in a difficult market shows a level of robustness. Competition is fierce of course and last year saw record levels of contributor registrations and image uploads. The photographers who are growing revenue on Alamy and having continued success are supplying a steady stream of fresh and on-trend content and are seeing year on year growth in earnings.

Future growth opportunities are on the horizon across all areas of our business and we'll share them with you at the earliest opportunity.

Best regards

"Chinese distribution and Novel Use. "

I've opted out of Novel Use? In fact, I've been opted out for about 10 years. Or is this a new Novel Use, Novel Use?!?

Giving images away where I receive approx 0.02 is not a growth opportunity!

Hi All,

I've just posted this message on our official forum so thought it would also be good to post here.

Apologies on the radio silence up to this point whilst we investigate what's been happening with these sales via a Chinese distributor. The detail is more complex than it appears and we are still picking through the data to ascertain whats involved and how it has come to pass.

I'd also like to apologise for posting this on what is a Friday afternoon here in the UK. It's never the best time to post replies and I'm aware there will may be suspicions that this is some kind of deliberate tactic of waiting for a quiet period but I can assure you it isn't.

I'll be back in touch next week to share more detail of what has happened with this flurry of sales through the Chinese distribution channel. For now though I wanted to confirm that this level of pricing is not some radical new approach that we've taken on that will be rolled out across all sales. I also want to be honest though and say that these types of deals are a requirement in todays market so you will see them from time to time, and we're not alone as an agency in having to provide such licence types.

Our average price for per licence remains remarkably stable and has done since 2017. 2021 had the average licence price in the same bracket as 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 - namely, an average of between $26 and $30 per licence. On an individual level it was a record year for submissions and photographer registrations so that may naturally dilute the earnings for photographers who are facing more competition than ever. Our job is to continue to grow sales in order to grow as a business of course but also be a viable earning platform for this growing number of contributors. It's a tough, competitive market but we have some ambitious and exciting plans which we hope you can all be part of with us.

Low value sales like you've seen here are not encouraging of course and I'm not going to pretend they are, but taken in as part of a bigger picture where our average price remains stable and higher than our key competition - and our plans for growth are very promising - I hope those who are dissuaded from contributing as a result may reconsider and continue to work with us as we grow.

While I appreciate the feedback, the hard reality is Alamy is not worth the effort anymore.

I work full time at this and I need to make sure my time is used effectively. Those low value sales, which after Alamy takes their cut are nearly 3 times lower than the smallest payment I receive from Shutterstock.... which in itself  is a disgrace. You are no where near AS in terms of income possibilities... not even the same universe.

However, add to that the low volume of sales at Alamy, as in less than 50 a day, you don't have the ability to make up for it in terms of volume of sales.

Then there is also the uploading and keyword system. I can't even upload all my images, hit submit and be done. No, not at Alamy... I then have to go through each and every one and select 10 top ranking keywords, select a number of drop downs spread over two pages and then save them (top 10 taken automatically at AS). It's not like submitting a large batch is any better because there are too many individual options for each and very easy to overwrite other files by mistake. I admit it's not the worst submission process.... looking at you iStock, but it's way too much for what is now a tiny amount of income compared to the main micros. I remember when $500 net was relatively easy... now $100 gross is an achievement some months even with 25 sales.

The top and bottom of it for me is your system is too much work for too little gain... you have priced yourself out the market in terms of new content and I don't, won't supply anything new to Alamy anymore.

Summary...

Low licence fees + Low volume of sales
Reduced commission
Higher levels of work to submit content
Long...long.....looooooong wait times to receive money from clients.
6 - 12 months after a sale.... still a chance for the item to then be refunded!

The start of the month was slow for me as well. Last week things definitely picked up though and I should hit level 4 by the end of today. 4 more to go. The crap part is I wont be back to level 5 for months, and Ill certainly never see the highest tier again. Nothing more demotivating than an unwarranted demotion. It leaves a bad taste that just wont go away.

Final third of Mar last year for level 5 but March was a strong month. We'll see, hopefully it's the same. Agree with the, "Unwarranted Demotion"... just leaves me feeling robbed by them. Greed, nothing more nothing less just pure green by SS.

173
I am a little amazed myself. The numbers at shutterstock are absolutely miserable. But they are actually better than at the same time last January. However, at the end of the month there were still some notable SODs coming in - let's see if that works out this year as well.

It's funny you should say that but, my stats are the same. As soon as I hit level 4 last year (around the 20th), things started to improve. Here's hoping the last week and a bit will be a lot better!

Given the volumes the $ difference is tiny. Just over $2 difference between 2021 & 2022 by the 19th.

Even though it may look similar for us, there is a significant difference:

The times when I would have reached level 4 on the 20th are over for me. Last year, that was at the beginning of February. So you're way ahead of me.

Given the way SS has changed, beginning of Feb is still good. Here's hoping it's no later for you!
