Shutterstock.com / Re: Shutterstock just became iStock 2.0
« on: May 27, 2020, 02:04 »
This sounds like bad news, but we all need to keep our cool. Personally, I've been waiting for something like this since video subs were implemented, but that didn't cause such a reaction.  If there was ever a time for a coordinated effort by contributors, it's now. Just my portfolio is around 50k assets, and I'm sure that, if needed, we can create a coordinated strong strike. But we need to see how will this affect us, using data, not emotions.

First of all, in the last 4 months, the average earnings by subs was 27% of all monthly earnings (for my portfolio). So, percentage wise, the segment of sales that will be hit the hardest isn't as drastic as I imagined.
Secondly, the idea of resetting the contributor's progress to level 1 at the beginning of each year is absolutely bonkers.
Lastly - the idea of using levels for subs is unacceptable.

So, this is what I suggest our demands should be:

1. Apply the levels structure to on-demand content, but leave subs alone. 10 cents for an image is unacceptable.
2. End the video sub program, just like fotolia ended DollarPhotoClub back in the day. We can do it.
3. Levels must be calculated on a 12-month window, and not be reset at the beginning of each year.

Now, demands don't make sense if there is no threat of penalty.

Again, my suggestions in regards what to do if shutterstock doesn't agree with our demands:

1. Stop uploading for 30 days. Not a single piece of content.
2. If no change - start pulling our portfolios. This needs to be a coordinated effort, like it was with DPC.
3. Reach out - to buyers, people holding their stock. Tweet. Be loud on social media. Make their stock tank. Without contributors like us, they are nothing.

We can create a website (like in the DPC days) and organize ourselves quickly, we've shown strength and solidarity when it was needed. Are you ready to come together now? That's up to you. The response to this post will give us the answer.

Agree... I've a 100+ waiting to submit out of 200. I'll just make a record of the ones that haven't gone through yet and not submit them. I can easily focus on work for AS (which differs to SS for me) and not submit anything to SS. It also gives us a chance to see what damage the changes will do to our existing ports, while demonstrating to SS that the supply of new content will dry up and stop. No fresh new images for them, just their competitors. Then the nuke button.

Shutterstock.com / Re: May sales drop dramatically?
« on: May 13, 2020, 04:59 »
Well, after a quieter March at SS, April was good and May has started strong. AS has been very good all year, 4 figure sales. Alamy has been slow... and very slow for them clearing funds. IS seemed ok last month, 30% down but they do fluctuate at times.

As Europe wakes from lockdown, it will be interesting to see if they have a summer break this year... normally a lot of places shut up for Jul & Aug. May well stay open this year to try and catch/make up for the 1st half of the year.

For the last few weeks AS has become the slowest loading site for me - now this.

When you search for latest activity on contributor stats, they have stopped loading it as a set of pages with a 100 per page, they now load all images sold for the dates selected. This results in slow load times. If I set it to show activity for the month, it loads all 1400 images on the one page?!?! Not surprising it takes a while. It worked better when it loaded them onto pages of 100.

Customer facing side of the site has just gone down for me. Error 503. That was just afterI was trying to workout why a batch of images from 23rd April aren't showing in the search at all?!? Something odd going on, not working properly at the moment anyway!

Edit.... back again... very yoyo like at the moment.

With coronavirus, I'm seeing Shutterstock dropping fast but Adobe Stock is remaining very strong... it's almost as if SS has lost its clients to them.

« on: March 30, 2020, 16:31 »
I only submit videos footage and my first thought is thats a really high number, especially compared to the bonus programs of the past couple years.

I have a portfolio of 9000+ videos and Ive always though that I have a wide variety of high quality videos, but Ive never had 625 sales in a year.

It also doesnt help that my sales have been going down pretty significantly since last October.

I upload 90% videos and 10% images, but i'm in the same boat...after a bit of math i think that
i'll have about 4500 points at the end of the year. At this point i think that i'll invest more time on
affinity suite for vector and raster (or other alternatives) and i'll go with the bonus for After Effects.
'Thanks' to lockdown i have time to learn Bmd Fusion...my plan-B :)
I know that 60/month are nothing if you are in the business, but MS is a different beast...earnings
are like a rollercoaster, so i think that it's a wise choice to invest time on alternatives.
Said that, thanks Mat and thanks to Adobe for the offer!

If you have a Mac, try Motion 5... it's about $50 and very good alternative to After Effects.

Out of curiosity - does anyone mind sharing what their average yearly number of downloads are? Based on most of the comments, Is 5000 an easy goal for most?

Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

This month I've had 1319 so far... still a day to go though with 3100 this year so far. Last year total was 10k.

Edit. I wouldn't say it's an easy goal though. You have to work hard to get and stay there.

Let me understand if i get it right...
From 150to4999 credits i can choose 1 app between
1:photography creative plan
2:Illustrator
3:Premiere
4:After effects
5:Indesign
Over 5000 credits all apps creative clouds
??

To clarify, if you choose the Creative Cloud Photography plan you would get Photoshop and both versions of Lightroom in addition to all the other bells and whistles included in this subscription.

That being said, yes you are correct.

-Mat

Mat, did anything ever come of the possibility of Adobe allowing the order of keywords in LR (both versions) to be set manually rather than alphabetically. I did like using LR on the iPad etc but ended up sticking with C1 because I could rank keywords for Adobe Stock. Cheers.

Thanks Mat... great to see this become a regular thing.

Liking the new, "Full package" plan, seems a fair achievable scale.... the more you put in the more you get out. Also, illustrators will now be able to get both packages... Illustrator on it's own or via the full package. Always seemed harsh for those guys in the past.

Mat, one more question: it's likely that I will hit 5,000+ DLs for 2020 around July-August. I only have the Photography plan. Will I be able to upgrade to the full package earlier?

It doesn't look like it.

"Bonuses2 will be determined in January 2021, and codes issued in February 2021."

I guess it will be an automated response / delivery system for the codes etc that will happen in the above time frame.

Seeing lots of $1.50 - $1.80 footage sales this month... seems like they are hell bent on killing off that side of the business. Not worth the effort when I can get more for a stills image.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Coronavirus ?
« on: March 17, 2020, 12:08 »
We had that big problem. People from infected areas, Madrid, moving free around the country (like Spring holidays) and spreading the virus everywhere, like the italian tourists before them.

In my region we had a few cases until that, until the holidays from Madrid and the returned students from that area. Some deads here are linked to that.

These people should be jailed.

Agreed. If they knowingly do it it's a form of manslaughter in my books. It most cases, we're our own worst enemies. If people stick to the rules, which will be short term in the greater scheme of things, then we can get through this quicker! My fear is to begin with there will be a lot of people with the, "It's all nonsense!" attitude. It's these people that will do the most damage.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Coronavirus ?

And the people that work in the nursing homes they have children too. The children use to spread the diseases.

Anyway, you can see what happens in several countries before. In Spain we din't learn from the italian mistakes and either in France. Now we are at home for a long time.

I know what your saying but if the kids are not at school, then the parents are no longer at the nursing home as they have to look after the children. In other words, you are damed if you do and damed if you don't. It's a balancing act, whats more beneficial at this moment in time? Once infection rates increase they will close schools as the risk will become too great.

At this moment in time, our region has 1 confirmed case, why close all schools at this point, which would result in Care Homes and hospitals loosing staff when they need them most. Give it a week or so when cases increase then, then the schools will close as the risk becomes too great.

One of the biggest risks are the people who ignore the self-isolation and go out anyway. People who've been to high risk areas or have signs of a cold etc. We've seen plenty of stories, including people that have died because they caught the virus from people who came back from high risk zones and didn't self-isolate as instructed. The people who think they know better and ignore the rules are our biggest risk.

If we all stick to what is being asked of us and let the experts make the decisions as best they can based on the current data they have then hopefully we'll get through this with as minimal loss of life as possible. I think it would be wrong to think this can be avoided, they know it can't... it's all about slowing it down so the NHS is not overrun by a large spike of cases.

Maybe Boris and others like him should think twice some things:

https://elpais.com/espana/madrid/2020-03-17/al-menos-19-muertos-en-una-residencia-de-ancianos-de-madrid-por-el-brote-de-coronavirus.html

Coronavirus kills 19 in ONE nursing home. More expected to die.

That's why the elderly have to be protected, they're the most at risk. It's why the UK have stated no unnecessary Nursing Home visits and elderly (over 70) to self isolated after the weekend. We all love our parents and grandparents and wold love to see them but that love could kill them.

I've already made sure they know how to use FaceTime on the iPad so we can see and talk to them. It's not the same as going their but, we all have a responsibility. Not see them for 2-3 months is not as bad as never seeng them again!

You can't protect them if you don't isolate the virus and stop the propagation. Elderly people don't live inside a waterproof chamber. With the schools, shops, cinemas... open they are dead.

I mean, try to realize that Spain or France are not China, we have strong and expensive health systems, both much better than the NHS I think. And they are in a overflowing risk as we see in Madrid, our main city.

I love the UK, I use to travel to London twice a year, don't misunderstand my opinions. But I can't understand what happens there.

Closing schools while parents are working = staying with grandparents = increased risk. Until more parents are no longer going into work schools will remain open.

Also, some 30-40% of nurses are also parents, if they have to return home to look after children who are no longer at school then that will all impact on treating the ill / infected.

They've already said schools will have to close but it is a case of managing / balancing the risks rather than trying to avoid it, which is impossible

The UK government is being dragged along by events and at least a week behind the curve. Individuals and even businesses are acting more responsibly than the govt. The UK used to be good at this stuff. The home sectretary should be protecting us...shes nowhere to be seen..........

The ones protecting us are the experts providing the government the advice, who happen to be leaders in the field of viral diseases. I trust them over you or I and we certainly don't know what's going on behind the scenes. I'd rather not see every Tom, Dick or Harry every 2 minutes repeating the same message, better that we see only the PM and the 2 experts for a daily Q & A while Ministers and experts work flat out behind the scenes sorting stuff out rather than sat in front of a TV camera.

Each and every country will be faced with a different set of problems that has to be balanced. There is zero point in comparing the requirements / response of one nation to another as borders, population balance, infrastructure and resources will all differ. Meanwhile, the media is doing a great job whipping up a frenzy of panic by quoting part statements that are misleading or, don't provide the full picture just to get views on their webpages and increase advertising revenue.

As far as business goes, SS is a little quieter but AS is doing really well this month.

It is 6% on closed cases, but the mortality rate is calculated on open and closed cases, so it's 3.66% currently. If they just calculated it using closed cases, and only one person had died but nobody had yet recovered... the mortality rate would be 100%.

And also doesn't take into account all those who've had it but not tested. There is a large volume of people who get it and have zero symptoms and never realise they've had it. That is one of the reasons it is important to develop a test that determines whether you've had it rather than the current tests which can only tell you whether you have it now.

Hi Everyone,

I've scheduled a webinar with our Senior Product Manager in charge of search this Thursday, February 27 at 2:30PM PST. It would be great if you can attend. We'll do our best to take as many questions as possible during our 45-60 minute conversation about Adobe Stock search. How you can use the tools to your advantage as a contributor at Adobe Stock. I hope to see you there!

Mat Hayward

In case I can't be there. Are Titles Searched or not?

I'm sure they said they were during the Keyword webinar... if the top 10 words or in the title then it gives an additional boost (provided you have 49 or less keywords)

I thought that too, so why this?  https://www.microstockgroup.com/fotolia-com/search-not-working-properly/

By the way, yes I am positive that in photos, the Title is searched. I have some pretty distinctive images which only have a specific word in the title only, not in the keywords.

I'd imagine they are searched so they can apply the boost to the keywords. However, if you don't have the keyword, adding it to the title alone will not help. It must be a keyword as well. In fact, I'm sure in the keyword video it said the "Keywords receive an extra boost if the keyword is in the title as well". This is different from the title being independently searchable in it's own right. Personally, if it's a word you want the image to be found with it should be in the keywords as a priority and title is a belt and braces / explanation. It has to be a complex image to get over 30 keywords so there should always be spare. Even files with loads of place names etc are well within the 49.

Editorial still images and footage would be awesome.

1. Select video thumbnails.
2. Upload editorial.

Both are on my list and I think you'll get both of them.

Of the two, I think editorial is much more impactful to contributors and customers.

Thanks for the feedback.

Dennis

Yes, proper editorial images would be high up there... wasn't sure if he wanted to hear about that or just footage. The existing illustrative editorial is ok but not quite the same as normal news/editorial content that will often include unreleased people.
