iStockPhoto.com / Deepmeta behaving strange
« on: May 12, 2016, 08:53 »
trying to edit a batch of images, deepmeta on Mac shows rows of the same keywords on some of the available options (background, time, pattern, etc.), see attachment, anyone else seeing this? It doesn't seem to affect the upload; on the istock website it correctly shows the chosen keywords.

have already done a fresh install with no results.

reading the answers, I will send a message to CR, maybe it is ok, but if not, I will delete my editorials on iStock to make sure I will not get into trouble.

28
That makes more sense, thank you! Hadn't thought about use in those ways

I took a look at my extended licenses at istock and saw that one of my editorial images with cars on it (with visible license numbers, special cars during a car event) was sold with an extended license 'products for resale'.

How can this happen? I sometimes upload images with cars, people (city views with people on it), etc, but strict under an editorial license, so that they will not be used commercially.

Products for resale sounds pretty commercial to me...

Print on Demand Forum / Invitation from Posterlounge
« on: April 01, 2016, 05:52 »
Anyone knows Posterlounge?

I received 2 invitations in the last month to sell my art through their website: https://www.posterlounge.co.uk/

There is nothing on the site on commission/exclusivity/etc.

Anyone having experience with these guys?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: US English or UK English in Deepmeta?
« on: December 10, 2015, 05:37 »
It shouldn't make any difference, though as noted above, there is a slight difference. I have set UK (British) (not in DM, I upload directly, but it shouldn't make any difference) and 'thought' that if I put in a US word or spelling that it would show up anyway as English (US) - I'm pretty sure that used to happen, but it certainly doesn't happen now.
As an experiment, I just tried sidewalk and pavement on a file, both showed up as UK (British) and mapped to 'pedestrian walkway' (strange, I'd think a 'pedestrian walkway' was something else completely!), so whether you search on sidewalk or pavement you should find the same file. Also color and colour ditto.

It's not you, it's iStock. I and many others (not quite all) are finding that recent-ish files (over the last three years) aren't selling, especially as credit sales. I'm hardly uploading there now, but of the files I've uploaded this year I have only a tiny trickle of credit sales and >10x the number of subs sales (which is unacceptable and why I've all but stopped uploading). Files uploaded in 2014 aren't much better.

If you find the translation from Dutch to English to be inaccurate, please post the info, with some strong examples of error, on their keywording/search forum, if you haven't done so already.

You are absolutely right in the old files selling way better in istock; but I still upload hoping things will turn somewhere in the future.
Difficult still which to chose, uk or us.

And for Dutch: if for instance you visit the ss site in dutch (default when your ip is dutch), the keywording and searching is a total mess, not more than 5/10% is translated correctly with their automated system. A photo of a plain house with normal correct keywords will suddenly have strange dutch keywords like 'unexperienced', 'motherland', 'green boy', etc. (one of my own files, and those keywords don't show up in the english version), so I never do my keywording in Dutch and let some machine do the translation. It would probably ruin my sales..

Interesting question.

I typed "colorful" (US) and "colourful" (UK) into shutterstock for footage and got 612,066 hits for US spelling and 612,008 hits for UK spelling.
For images I got 16,719,734 hits for US and 16,715,500 hits for UK spelling. Not much of a difference.

For "cosy" (UK) I got 28,479 hits and "cozy" (US) I got 101,216 hits. Much bigger difference.

Worth it to check other variations of words, eg honour vs honor, fibre vs fiber, etc...
Also for different words like autmn and fall, I just put in both keywords.

check this out if you have the time: http://www.tysto.com/uk-us-spelling-list.html

The word cosy/cozy would suggest the US translation would work better..but you are right in offering both options, that's the best solution to work with, still for istock a little difficult to choose.
Your link is much appreciated; I now at least see that I am more a US word user than UK, so that helps!

iStockPhoto.com / US English or UK English in Deepmeta?
« on: December 09, 2015, 05:21 »
The 2000 photos I have on the top tier sites are doing very well, but istock always falls behind a little; if ss would be 100, then istock never is higher than 25% for me.
I am Dutch and use the keyword tool to add keywords to my images, always in english because the 'automatic' translation from dutch to english is a true nightmare.

Could it be that it makes a difference if you choose UK English or US English in Deepmeta; up until a few months ago I uploaded with US English and switched to UK English for now and it looks like - maybe - it is getting a little bit better.

I know that the istock search engine should handle all languages alike, but what would you think is the best option?

I am just wondering: where are you Lee?

Here in The Netherlands the last weeks it's getting slower and slower. I have a fixed 120MB up/download line and ss used to be lightning fast, now it takes almost 10 minutes to upload 5 images

Last week I searched for a wooden model ship in the keyword tool and it returned with a whole page of 80 new (high photonumbers) ugly, not sharp, wrong white balance, etc. photo's of the same model ship against a greyish background.

Then - theoretically, haven't submitted a ship yet  ;) - the next day you can submit one (not 80!) perfect studio shot with a highend camera of a genuine ancient ship - sharp, perfect white balance, perfect white background - and it will be rejected for reasons nobody understands...

Also, I forgot to mention: there were no credits on the card, the back side only showed the magazine's name and website.

Thanks for the replies. I will write them a letter/email tomorrow with the question where they have purchased the photo and what the exact number of prints has been.
I think it's a good idea Langstrup to contact the agency once I know where it is purchased.

Hello everyone, this is my first post on the forum. About 2,5 years ago I have started uploading photos to the stocksites and up till now I have learned a lot from reading all the post on this forum, but felt not experienced enough to already add posts myself. Let this be my first :-)

Earlier this year I shot a photo on a Dutch car event which shows 3 rare and special customised cars. This photo is distributed by shutterstock, istock, dreamstime and 123rf as editorial.
This week one of the car owners contacted me saying that a friend had received a greeting card with this photo on it and the Dutch text for 'have a good trip!'. It turned out that a very large and well known Dutch media company offers - among others - a subscription magazine and they added freebie greeting cards with the January issue and one contains my editorial photo. The print run has been 50.000.

Both the car owner and I are not happy with this; the car is a rare really famous one and I feel bad that my explicit editorial photo is used in this way. The car owner is ok with my work, but doesn't want his car to be used commercially.

Can they do this? Shouldn't an editorial license prohibit this?

I don't like lawyers, but for now I at least want to contact them asking where and how they have bought this image to know what is going on.
What I am afraid of: can this 'backfire' at me? It is a huge company and maybe a premium stock buyer. What happens if they call the agency; won't the stock agency think "oh, this is a complaining contributor, let's remove his account". I really like making stockphoto's and already a good part of my income comes from stock.

Thank you!
