You'd think there are better ways to make a quick buck if you're willing to steal. I guess the thing here is that it's virtually risk-free.

1777
Exactly. The best thing we can do is to keep an eye open for our stuff and make sure their accounts are shut down immediately with frozen earnings.

This way it won't be worth the trouble to steal, upload, and keyword a bunch of images.

1778
Why does anyone steal?

Unfortunately it is so incredibly easy to steal stock photos and get away with it. What happens if you get caught? NOTHING! You just get banned from the site... It's quite astonishing really.

I have had people steal my music and sell it on the same sites, effectively taking sales away from me. What happened when they got caught? The account was just closed. I didn't get the money back, nothing.

Lazy idiots without conscience or good people in really unfortunate situations will steal.

I have checked a lot of clips and all frame rates sell. There is no clear pattern. The reason there are more clips with 29.97 is that all cameras sold in the NTSC world are set to that by default.

axiomimages is the top seller (or top 3) pretty much all the time at Pond5 with $499 clips and they are all 23.98. But like others have pointed out, it's the content, not the frame rate that sells. But high budget stuff is always 23.98.

1780
Many professional stock shooters always use 23.976. For slow motion and timelapse it doesn't really matter since it's not important that it's real time anyway. The buyer can always just speed up or slow down a little bit without changing the intended effect of the clip, keeping all the frames intact.

When you shoot 23.976 in a studio you use flicker free studio lights.

General - Stock Video / Re: Thoughts on 360 videos?
« on: May 05, 2016, 13:17 »
Today, I don't think you can get good quality 360 for $1,000... For quality stuff, I think $3k+ is what you're looking at. 6 GoPros or similar is the minimum for real 360.

I've seen some of the cheap 360 videos and they look absolutely TERRIBLE!

I really do like watching good quality 360 videos though, it's a great experience!

Adobe Stock / Re: Editorial Use Only - Can we expect it?
« on: May 05, 2016, 03:46 »
Yes, Fotolia really needs to add this. I sell almost as much editorial content as I do commercial.

1783
The top video clips at Pond5 sell around 10 times per month. Not many do that.

It all comes down to the size and commercial usability of your entire portfolio. Some people make $10k and up per month, with a lot of good quality/unique material. Helicopter aerials of most major cities in the world is one of those things.

With music, you can sell the same track thousands of times, because it can fit more projects. Video is more particular, and no single clip will ever sell that many times. You need a bigger portfolio and higher prices to make as much money.

Great sale, brings hope to all of us!

I think a lot of complainers used to do well when competition wasn't as stiff... these days you can make a lot of money - you just have to be better.

I have more experience in the audio side of things, where you could sell really, really crappy pieces for a lot of money 10-15 years ago. Today the competition is high and you need to be able to produce professional sounding tunes. There is still A LOT of money to be made though. Probably many times more.

1785
Now I'm really confused. If they are not the seller how do they 'take care of it' (VAT).

Well, as an author, you don't have the possibility to take care of any VAT issues so as far as I'm concerned, they are the seller. No matter what they say to justify their author fees...

1786
The tax/VAT issues are a real problem, for me, not the pricing.

You don't have to worry about VAT there. They take care of it and you never see it.

1787
"Target a different market" sounds nice in theory, but when you sell identical digital files with the same usage rights the term becomes a bit ridiculous.

It's not like you're selling Ferraris at Pond5 for $399 and used Toyotas at Envato... You will find the exact same files. People do shop around but some just care more about time than price and will buy whatever they find (or are shown) first.

The BEST-selling footage clips only make around $92 per month at Envato, and only 2 of them... They make around $400+ per month at Pond5 with the worst on the list still making $175.

If they start doing author pricing, I will consider it.

1788
OK.  :) Then you choose "Photos".

1789
Well, I would never use h264 unless space or internet connection was a serious issue.

It only makes sense to use h264 if you upload STRAIGHT from a camera that records in it. As soon as you tweak something and export you re-encode the clip and you lose quality. By the way, there is a 10-bit h264 codec.

If you're using FCPX you're working in ProRes as soon as you make any changes and you will re-encode on export. ProRes withstands multiple compressions better than most.

1790
Well, as always, it depends. A lot of the more professional aerials that sell like hotcakes for $400 are uploaded in ProRes 422 HQ. I think they are bought by small-big TV Shows, lots and lots of trailers and even Hollywood movies.

For me, the question is 422 vs. 422 HQ... Some clips answer the question for me as they get too big if they're in HQ.

I think it's more of a mystery that the sites convert to h264 when they make HD versions... ProRes is a very good format that withstands multiple compressions very well.

When you buy a picture you often want something that's already perfect in every way without the need to change much, which means a jpg makes sense.

When you buy a video you basically NEVER just use it on its own - it is to be included in a bigger project and it might be necessary to tweak the colors a bit.

Especially for timelapses, where you start with a 12-14-bit clip, a 10-bit ProRes delivery seems reasonable instead of an 8-bit h264. Just make sure you don't go to jpg in between...

1791
Well, micro aerial shots are the same as macro... Just sell at sites where you can set your own prices if that's a problem. On Pond5 they are best-sellers every week at $400-500 for 8 seconds. I reckon the top aerial producers pull in around $3000 per week just at P5.

I've never rented a helicopter but to get one with a gimbal mounted can't be cheap...

1792
How much demand is there for aerial footage do people think?

When I seach London on Pond5 the bestsellers are timelapse then a ton of aerials from a helicopter!

Huge demand for GOOD aerials, mostly shot over big cities with a Red Epic or other REAL camera mounted on a helicopter. Every single TV show uses aerials from Los Angeles and New York.

Of course, there is serious cost involved in doing this, and most useful shots already exist.

I believe it's not easy getting those shots legally with drones.

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia search not returning my images
« on: April 19, 2016, 10:33 »
Yes, but they were very specific combinations that only returned one or two pages of results. So it was definitely not there at all.

1794
You mean change the extended price to 60 from 30? It doesn't seem to affect the XL L prices so I guess it doesn't make much of a difference unless you sell lots of extended licenses...

I couldn't find a way to do it for video, is it possible?

« on: April 19, 2016, 09:40 »
When I try different combinations of keywords to find my images, about half the time, they are not found. Despite all of those keywords being present in the description and/or keyword section.

Some combinations work, others don't so it's definitely in the system, but can't be found with some combinations.

I find this very strange. Have you experienced anything like this?

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 Sales Reporting
« on: April 16, 2016, 09:47 »
Consensus on the Pond5 forum is that today's sales report only covered 1 day of the 5 or so that are currently unreported, so there are likely more days' worth of sales still in limbo awaiting to be reported. Some sort of communication from Pond5 would be very much appreciated.

Well, that would be good, but I doubt it. I had about 3x my daily normal so it was almost definitely a combination of the last couple of days.

1797
Entirely possible. But it has happened pretty much every month for the last couple of years, never 5 days like this time, but usually 2 days.

1798
Not the only one, I think everyone. I received one today that seems to cover the last 4-5 days.

I'm new to this site, but it seems they have quite different pricing nowadays, am I correct?

Hard to tell with credits here and there, but to me it seems like the cheapest plans are $56 for HD and about $140 for 4k, putting them right below where the competition is.
