I think I will just delete and then upload stuff that I am not offering exclusive rights on anywhere else.  I hate to cross istock off my list all together as I was really excited to be accepted there.  But I am narrowing it down to the higher-returning sites and istock, well, not one of them for my files right now.  To be fair, it's sort of a self-fulfilling thing because I don't upload much there because of low sales so I continue to get low sales.

"Please note that we will only consider deactivating files for legal or similar justifiable reasons as it provides a negative experience for customers when files are suddenly unavailable for license. "

As I read this, we could still deactivate files when we make them exclusive elsewhere (DT or FT) or sell them as RM at Alamy. These are "legal or justifiable reasons". For pictures with people we could just remove the Model Release.
Do you really think Getty will agree to deactivate a file so you can make it exclusive somewhere else?  Don't think so...
And as far as I know there's no way to remove a model release from an image.

But what if I sell exclusive rights on another agency?   DT offers that on non-exclusive files, just demands they be pulled from the market when sold.   It's my content, dammit....

Hmmmm....I've made a grand total of $.28 there this year, sell mostly editorial elsewhere that I very rarely get through their system, and want to be able to deactivate my files just in case I make one of those ever rare exclusive rights sales.   Might be time for me to deactivate the few files I have up there before August 20.

I understand and agree we hold the copyright and they "should not be able" to  hold files captive against our will but, meh, who wants to fight them over it for no more than I make?

I'd be interested in giving this a try

Thanks!  I will give the ftp a try.  It just seems like overkill for the number of images I usually upload.  Of course, if they stop disappearing I might upload more!

123RF / Files disappearing
« on: June 22, 2016, 15:44 »
I have been uploading to 123rf using the web browser.  It looks like the files are uploading OK, but when I check in to find them later they are just gone-not in the processing queue, the incomplete queue or anywhere else that I can see.   Is this normal?  Would I have better luck using ftp?   Do they ever show up or should I just try again?

I have had reasonable success with files selling once I get them uploaded, but the uploading process is a bear-at least for me.

I appreciate the talk about erosion and all that jazz, but if that erosion results in me getting $500K, then is it that bad? It might be bad fr others, but price erosion on microstock is far from slavery, trafficking, poverty and human right violations.

Well, that kinda puts things in perspective lol

Newbie Discussion / Re: Shooting editorial - any point?
« on: May 23, 2016, 09:27 »
I sell a lot of editorial, maybe more than I sell commercial.  The key if to find truly news worthy events that don't involve a lot of expense to minimize your risk.  "Human interest" can also do well.  I'm working on diversification because right now my port is very subject to good runs and slow times.

Adobe Stock / Re: Editorial Use Only - Can we expect it?

I sell more editorial and really enjoy it.  I will be very happy if FT decides it fits their business model.

Print on Demand Forum / Re: Imagekind: pay to play?

I'm a bit more cynical.  I suspect they are making money by selling "premium" upgrades to contributors with little or no concern as to whether anything on the site actually sells.

I uploaded 59 pics a few weeks ago (took a while!) then realised the life support had been turned off! Wont be uploading any more.
Maybe this explains why my mark-up always returns to 0%, no matter how many ways I change and save it.

Images Igniting Imagination.  In my personal photography, I aim to include a little more creativity then the typical stock site.  I have also added a separate password protected area for individual clients.

I recently started with zenfolio and I like their website templates.  I don't know if they would work for videos, but I like being able to get the public site and back office up without a lot of coding.

I'm glad to hear from somebody that is making it on their own!  I am working on gaining exposure from FB and Google ads.  I'm not sure how well the strategy will work.  I am not really targeting the typical stock buyer.   I am creating a site that will work for family and wedding clients as well as selling some work for prints and mugs, etc.

I'd like to know what strategies people are using to target buyers, just in a generic way that won't compromise their strategy.

I agree with Paulie about multiple distribution channels.  And most agencies allow you to post a link to your site in your port, which is pretty cool.

Dreamstime.com / Re: DT April Fool Submissions

Seems I am always a day late and a dollar short.  I just uploaded my first batch to P5 about a week ago.  And yeah, I enjoy DT and their sense of humor.  If only I could make a bit more money there all would be awesome.   :-\

My 2 cents:

Shutterstock saw good money from the REX purchase and a ton of new clients.
AP is more of the same but they dont have to buy AP.

AP is a cheap skate organisation. I remember their day rate was something like $160 when I was trying to be a press photographer.

I confess...$160/day is more than I expect to see out of microstock.  Ever.  Even if I go full time.   I understand it's cheap, but when I compare it to what I am making it doesn't sound so awful.  *lol* Sad situation.

Alamy.com / Re: RF Editorial coming to Alamy!
« on: April 05, 2016, 16:31 »
Exciting news!  I would also be interested in exploring the possibility of migrating RM editorial to RF.  Not a big deal for me since I am fairly new to Alamy and haven't uploaded a lot as of yet.

Most of my SS port is editorial and I saw a real decline this month.   I wish they would also distribute SS images on AP.

I get that message, but seems like eventually the files show up.   It's just taking forever for them to get reviewed.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Does the IRS send e-mails ?
« on: January 31, 2016, 22:23 »

and use one email for everything, ..ie. friends, fb, msg,etc..
if ever you get a scam email, it definitely won't be from the one you gave irs and the bank..
because no one else would have it.

I would not totally rely on this.   Some of these scammers "auto generate" emails like auto dialing a phone.  It's possible that they could come up with yours just through random chance.  I think you have a good idea, though, they would be a lot less likely to "find" one that you never gave out to anybody than one that lots of people have.

Where do you think that is?? Im doing this forever and Have no clue whatsoever.
Still looking...but working and watching.   Unfortunately, there is a difference between willing and able.  Hoping to close the gap some day.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: FTP editorial only photos to istock?

I plan on staying indie for a while.  These images are doing pretty well on DT and SS, so I am content to not bother with the IS process :-)

I think it is time to give up on istock for editorial.  They want a press pass with the photographer's name on it.  These rallies give generic press passes-even to the big guns.  On top of that they want a signed property damage release even if the only thing visible regarding the locale  is part of the American flag.   It's just not worth the effort to try to get through the process.   I will see if I can't shoot some nice commercial RF for them instead :-)

I would not be interested in this service unless it was provided by somebody I already had a trusting relationship with.   I do a lot of editorial stuff and my guidelines for what I will and will not do to correct/enhance these images are stricter than some photogs.  I do my own post to maintain QC of my own work.  It's my reputation that is at stake and I am hoping to use my stock work as something of a foundation to expand in other areas.

I would consider training someone I already trust to do this for me, if my business expanded enough, but I don't see myself trusting an "outsider." I definitely think there is value to your service and I hope you find a way to build it up.

OR....Hopefully we'll go back to the days when companies actually Hired Photographers to shoot for them.  digital came along, then Micro and everyone is a Photographer. Ya right. Digital made it to where everyone can enjoy Photography, It also killed traditional Stock work Done By a select few that made a living at it.
I think for the big users this has to happen eventually.   Can you imagine sifting through these stock libraries to get quality stuff for an ad campaign?  The only thing that worries me is the need to get my skills up to snuff before it happens.  I have a lot to learn, but I am willing to learn, willing to work, and willing to keep an eye on where the market is headed.
