No, thats not right. It has the same roots in almost all Indo-European languages. Therefore it is similar. The number words in these languages have the same roots, which are much older than the Latin. (Old-Greek δώδεκα ddeka, older German tozen, Swedish tolft etc. etc.)
I was right, then. It has little specifically to do with "British Culture", it's international.

I'd say dozen is very "European". :)

That's great but where the word Dozen? Or Half Dozen?

Do you need to be constantly reminded that six is half dozen? I live in another EU country and I have been buying similar packs as long as I remember.
6 will always be 6,  2 x 6 will always be 12 no matter if you call it a dozen or not.

Norway and Switzerland outside and richer hmm that tells me something.

Zimbabwe, Moldova, Pakistan, Albania are also outside. Are they richer because of that? Comparing apples to oranges doesn't make sense.

You'll get trouble with Scotland; you will lose exports and see the pound licking the ground; many financial, industrial services (hundred thousands of jobs) will flee to other countries, mainly Ireland. Actually, Ireland won the lotto yesterday.

It might be so, yes. If Ireland does much better economically than the UK, perhaps many people in Northern Ireland will want again to unite with the Republic. The EU and the effective removal of borders played an important role in the peace process in Northern Ireland.

A drop in the pound is a good thing for Britain it means that their exports to other countries will be cheaper and thus more sales for England, that is why the USA and China are always trying to devalue their currency. Every currency is rushing for the bottom and poor Japan is trying to devalue theirs but everyone keeps jumping into theirs as a safe haven thus keeping them in a permanent recession.
A weak currency is good only if you actually manufacture something and export it (e.g. China, Japan, Germany). As far as I know, the British economy is dominated by the services and banking sectors. So, a weak currency is not a good thing for the average person when most things are imported.

Some countries are shackled to their policies and they feel that they don't have a say. If Greece wasn't in the EU, they may be in a different position than they are today.

First of all, Greece shouldn't have faked their economic data in order to get into the EURO zone. They would be much better off with the drachma. Theoretically they could abandon euro now, devalue the drachma and become more competitive, but they won't do it, because their living standards would suffer big time...

They could also stop cheating their own state, retire at an older age... But no... It is EU's fault because it transfers billions of Euros earned by working people in other countries...

I suspect the dream of Brexiters was a result around 49:51 but in favour of REMAIN, so that they continue and gather funds for the next referendum. I am not a Brit and don't follow the British politics closely, but does this Farage guy stand for anything else? Now, that they achieved Brexit, does he have anything to live for or fight for?

London, Edinburgh, Oxford, Cambridge and the major urban centers were in favour of remaining by a wide margin. It is a slight simplification, but does that mean that most people who can consider themselves successful in one way or another were pro-EU, and most of the Brexiters felt that they are less affluent or successful because of the EU? I think in the long run, the UK will do fine, but the most of those who will do well by then, are also those who are successful now. And those who blame the EU now, might pay the highest price and won't be much better off after a few years. I think they will lose much more. Just leaving the EU is not a solution or a cure for their issues. I suspect Farage and Johnson just manoeuvred themselves onto a minefield, which was not part of their plan. I don't think they have a clue 'what to do now'.

The EU might have many faults and might need serious reforms, but no matter how you look at it, it has brought an unprecedented long period of stability and peace and as a result of that also relative prosperity.

It's true. It's probably twice as expensive, but I see it as an investment. A Mac in general is just a better investment.

Then it is a very horrible investment because it loses value as time goes by. A computer is a tool, not an investment. Speaking of tools, a hammer or a screwdriver are better investments than a mac computer, because you will be able to use hammers and screwdrivers after 20, 50 years or longer. For the price of a mac, buy as many hammers and/or screwdrivers as you can, as an "investment". You will be much better off than "investing" in macs... An iMac from 2006 can be bought for less than a 100 bucks on eBay, what an investment :)

Why do people look for such stupid sites at all? I never heard of them. Why do people even consider uploading there???
Why do people have to supply every single stupid site that emerges?
If a racoon could talk or write and said "hey, upload your videos to my site", there would be people asking "Do you accept 4k? What codecs do you accept? Do you support Payoneer?"
Search for New York or Paris or London to see what kind of site this is and what they can offer. Time-wasters. Don't support morons and they won't become a problem. Simple.

They seem to be good guys, but I uploaded some 100 images last year and haven't had a single sale until now. I am not motivated to upload more for now.

286
I'd say everybody should clean up and delete at least 50% of their portfolios.
That would definitely improve my sales.

287
Be realistic, if you're not earning US$25 per download NET then you're going to struggle to be successful in the long run.

The amount you earn per download has only a very tenuous link to how successful one is in the long run. Isn't it about $45 per download on ClipCanvas, $25 on ClipDealer? I've had one sale out of the both of them this year.

Nobody is going to argue that $25 per clip is a lot better than $4 a clip, but when it comes to being successful (financially), surely it's the total in the bank that counts, not the amount per clip? You can get $250 per HD download, but if you only sell one or a two a year then you're going to be living on a bench. Obviously I'm not saying that people who don't upload to Envato are earning less that those that do... just trying to make the point that a high sales figure isn't always the 'be all and end all'.

Your work is fairly unique and I don't think there is big competition in your niche. Therefore you could easily charge much more and still be successful. If I had your content I would price HD at 79-100 USD and try to bring buyers to the more lucrative sites. I think you are undercutting yourself and shooting yourself in the foot. Your work is very good and most buyers would pay much more for it, if that was the only way to license it. I buy from Envato other things, but as a supplier I don't touch them with a barge pole.

Do you know how to make a small fortune with microstock?
Start with a big one.

I don't understand quantum physics in detail and I don't understand why people become DT-exclusives.

Pond5 / Re: Time to give up on Pond 5.....

Quote
My recent submission of a number of clips of The Little Mermaid in Denmark was intended to nail the subject on the head so that this would be a definitive collection. The limited collection already on Pond 5 were so obviously shot by tourists on non-standard equipment and looked dark and pretty awful for the most part.

Slightly off topic, but beware of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen. Certainly not suitable for commercial use, as the descendants of the sculptor are very litigious and there is no freedom of panorama for sculptures in Denmark. Editorial - maybe, but they might still claim that it is done "for profit".

General Stock Discussion / Re: Do you archive your RAW files?
« on: April 05, 2016, 11:29 »
I keep most of my RAW's but never jpegs.. once the jpeg has been uploaded or delivered to the client - they're deleted.

I mean if I ever need that jpeg again, i just export another copy from Lr.

What happens if your RAW file gets corrupt? I've had quite a few problems with LR file corruption. The file gets a "!" icon and when you click it, it says something like "Lightroom cannot read this file".

This is why it is beneficial to have duplicates on seperate storage systems

When you sync the data, the corrupt file from the main storage overwrites the working files in the backups.
There is no good solution for this issue AFAIK, unless you keep many HDDs created at different points in time and don't overwrite them. It would be quite complicated and expensive, though.

$99.94 received yesterday. It would be a shame to lose it. At least they passed away in good style.

The last time I checked them (in January) there were lots of editorial clips online, but they were not marked as such, which I find very unprofessional.

Stocksy / Re: Stocksy Press
« on: March 22, 2016, 14:54 »
I hope that Stocksy inspires other people. There are many flavours of stock and there is plenty of room for other co-ops serving different customers and different markets.
Right now many "traditional" agencies serving only the interests of the owners, shareholders etc. resemble parasites. But Stocksy shows that it doesn't have to be this way.

For the life of me, I can't understand all those "pros" with full-time income feeding the parasites with thousands and thousands of great images in this unsustainable model, instead of getting together and creating a better model, other co-ops, serving different customers with different images. If every agency had different images (image-exclusivity) there would be no need to compete on the price only. Non-exclusivity is the root of our problems.

Congratulations, Peter, for finding your niche and being good at it. Not my area of expertise, though. Good luck!

They should have hired a dog or a broomstick instead for this position. In the long run they would be more successful than with this guy.

and another one bites the dust

I can't see my statistics anymore. They must have had one of the worst, most complicated interfaces in the history of stock photography. It takes so long to find anything if you are not a frequent visitor.
But years ago the sales were ok... they weren't bad back then..

Another one bites the dust, then.
It doesn't make any difference if I make 2, 3 or 5 peanuts less per year.
I liked Yay in the distant past for their approach, but continuing now would be a complete waste of time and I don't feel like helping to undercut other agencies.
See you in the next life, guys.
