iStockPhoto.com / keyword issues with editorial in stock
« on: April 17, 2016, 15:01 »
in the past few days I uploaded a few editorial images to istock. They were reviewed right the way and approved. However, I cannot find them using the search engine.

I will give one example. One of my pictures features the water tower of the  University of California in Davis. The keyword indexer does not recognize the UC Davis (here in California we call the state schools UCs), only the UC Berkley or the UC San Francisco. The city of Davis is also impossible to put in the keywords. The indexer returns "Davis" as a foreign language word and does not recognize "city of Davis" at all. With all that in mind, since the most important words are missing, (I suppose someone would search for water tower city  Davis, University California Davis, UC Davis) the image is almost impossible to find.

I don't know if this issue has come up before, but I have concluded that the images I shoot in my own town, Davis, are not worthy uploading. Because they will never be found.

Microstock Services / Re: Zoonar rejecting editorial

I don't mean to answer for Michael, but what he was trying to tell me is that I had a default RF upload on my preferences and when the images were reviewed they were rejected because those images should be RM.

I had understood initially that the images could be uploaded as either RM or RF but that after key wording then we had to choose the correct license. Since I changed my default upload to RM I have had no problems with rejection images that need a release but don't have one.

I don't think that they are rude, but their English sometimes is a little rudimentary.  I've learned to like it there. No sales yet but only time will tell.

No sales, lets celebrate how good they are like the rest of the loser sites paying nothing for your work. Or is it the higher percentage of nothing that's impressing you? Why do people borther with these places?

I support them because they have fair commission rates on a 50% basis. You can set the prices for your pictures, set your own picture shot etc. I can upload RM pictures. It seems like a very small company, I never communicated with more than one person there. They try to keep their costs down. It is not a times square company that tries to exploit you. I have not had sales there yet, but when a sales happens, it will be worth a few of my sales at SS or other exploitative sites.

Uploading is not too difficult and it only takes a minute to add a text in English and chose the correct license. It takes a fraction of my time.

Basically, I think, you just don't. Sorry. There are other sites where to submit your stuff that will be more willing to listen.

I am a professional scientist in my real life and make pretty good money. My husband, conversely, is a musician and he earns for his work the equivalent of what we earn in stock. Some here may actually make a whole lot more than him. It is hard.

Why don't you migrate to industrial photography? It will pay...

Uploading there is a pain in the @ss because I need to make a very small version of the image to upload to avoid a large file being stolen. Then I have to upload it again to the marketplace.

As I said in a few other threads about this, I am downsizing there and leaving a few exclusive photos just in case things turn around. But I am not one of those who have sales there so it won't make a difference to them, or to me.

...I'm reporting what I'm seeing across Silicon Valley. Startups and post-startup companies are making some tough decision. There have been a lot of layoffs, cutbacks, pivots and an aggressive push for more revenue...

The difference here is that the people getting scr*wed can (even if they typically don't) empty out the store overnight, leaving the business shuttered.

You might think that enlightened self interest would at least consider that cultivating contributors rather than viewing them as a cost to be minimized might be a strategy for a newcomer to get a foot in the door as they try to get the business going.

And I can and do blame messengers who can't even be honest and straightforward about what they're doing. More than the actions (which are bad enough) it's the utter lack of respect that the stinking pile of corporate-speak represents that destroys any empathy I might otherwise feel. It's just business? That's not an excuse in my book.

I would be willing to do that if it helps anybody else. To me it makes no difference. There are no sales for me there.

123RF / free images
« on: March 19, 2016, 22:30 »
I have been offering free images at 123rf since I subscribed as they promise an increase of exposure of your portfolio and the chance to sell a larger version of the image to the same customer.

I am not sure I have gotten much out of it. The free images are downloaded several times but never a larger version seems to be purchased and my sales since I subscribed back last Dec have only gone down.

I would like to hear people's perceptions about donating images there. Does it really help the photographer in any way? I am thinking to stop doing it.

for ever. That's how long it takes. I don't even care anymore. If a customer wants it they expedite the process.

General Stock Discussion / Re: 500px beside microstock ?
« on: March 09, 2016, 20:14 »
I have been a contributor there for over a year. Or almost one year. Can't remember. IT was my first "stock" agency. People there act more like someone who wants exposure for their work and approval (likes) from other photographers. Likes will get your work on the top pages of their "popular" pages and, they say, give you more exposure.

The bulk of photographers there aren't stock photographers and a few months ago the community got really upset when changes were introduced that facilite entrance of people who produce stock type photography. Toilet pictures there will not get any likes or exposure, it is really a more "artsy" place, or it used to be, and now I am not sure which direction they are going.

I knew it when I took this one that there was going to be a use for it in the future.

I'm off to shoot local toilets (read to the end to see why) :)

I wish I could answer, but I am on the same boat as you. With the disadvantage that I have never done design work so I don't know what designers need/ look for in stock.

My first batch of pictures was a collection of last years' nature snapshots as I learned to use my first DSLR. I have now taken taken a few photos in the nutrition/ supplements area because this is an interest I have and I know something about it.

I think we have to trust that in the end we will find our way. One thing I have done lately is to first check, when I have an idea for a photo shoot, that there are not thousands of other pics there with the same main keywords.

Alamy.com / Re: I passed QC
« on: March 06, 2016, 12:25 »

:D People I have been contributing to Alamy for three months. Shall my lack of earnings not discourage anyone from contributing there. Hey they are friendly, their QC is pretty fair. It is the best place, and only for me, where to upload "editorial" type pictures. No hassle with captions, explanations why its news worthy, just upload and declare that you don't have the proper releases. A breeze.

I often see agency representatives step in here when some misinformation is being delivered and discussed. Which is good since some of us may be inclined to believe what others say here without double checking the information.

Guys, I passed QC on Alamy. I opened account in febryary, but I never tried to submit my 4 images. I thought they are not good enough. Yesterday I did it and today I am at Alamy :) But I am totally stucked to licences and keywording system :D I hope I will manage.

I contribute to a number of sites that have higher rejection rates than Alamy but I also feel the adrenaline rush when I get a QC e-mai. It is like you've passed a major test every time, like being in school again and waiting for your test results. I love Alamy though haven't earned a penny yet there.

BTW, Congratz for big sale!

I got a better one. 2.888. I did not know that we can earn a fraction of a cent!

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy- Any success??
« on: February 25, 2016, 22:12 »
So, I have a question regarding editorial images.

If I upload an image to SS as editorial can I upload this same image to alamy? If I understand correctly editorial images must be uploaded on alamy as RM? So that means that I can't upload same editorial image on SS and alamy. Am I getting this right or not?

You can upload an image is RM to Alamy and as editorial to other sites if you don't have the proper releases and Alamy's will not sell as RF.
