English is not my language but, "How well he sells", "he sells"? sounds so wrong. Totally triggers me when I see the title. Quite apart from the fact that SS has cut the commissions so much that it looks like troll posting to me, I personally have about -80% and I've been boycotting the platform by not uploading anything anymore.
Once upon a time, there was a big thread about poor sales on Shutterstock, which Stoker2014 was enjoying very much... but then a few people would occasionally pop in and mention that they had received a large sale, or sales were going well, and this enraged Stocker2014. It got too much for him and he lashed out, reprimanding one individual and telling them that the thread in question was only for complaining about Shutterstock, and that if people wanted to share positive comments about their sales at SS, then somebody should create a thread called "What a cool SS, how well he sells". And the rest, as they say... is history.

Yep. the 3rd was a bit higher than usual, the 4th was over double what I usually get, the 5th went back to just a bit more than I usually get... and today is back up to over double what I usually get. While the fluctuations shouldn't be related, the larger amounts might be related to the email they sent out a few weeks back with regards to how they're changing the way they handle payouts for authors. I've had big drops before and big increases and then they just gradually head back to the average over the rest of the month... never had it going massively up, down and then back up again!

B to the M to the E. Surprising as I haven't uploaded anything new for about a year. ($2.99 RPD - all video)

Been there since 2015, 129 videos uploaded, opted in to all the different options... make about $250 a year there.

I also think my clips are worth more than $4-12 RPD, but if I was to go exclusive at Pond 5 my earnings would drop by about 85%, all things being equal. RPD is great and all but it has little influence on your overall earnings, how much money you make at the end of the month and whether the whole concept of selling stock is worthwhile or not.
The easiest way to figure out if it's worth it or not, RPD aside, is just to take your average Pond5 earnings and multiply that by 1.5... if that's a considerable increase on your total earnings then go for it. If it's less than your total earnings then don't go for it... if it's somewhere inbetween then it's something to consider.
"If a buyer needs particular clips, they pay decent price no matter what". No they don't. If you have 100% unique content that cannot be sourced anywhere else then that might be true, but how many of us does that apply to? Not me. They'll pay the going rate on whatever site they predominantly use, and if cost is a factor, then they'll have found whatever they're looking for long before they get to the $199 options. Well... they will 'pay a decent price no matter what' to be fair, but they'll pay whatever is a decent price to them... not what you consider a decent price to you.
But anyway, hopefully it works out for you. I just think that your hard and fast rules are more specific to what works for you rather than a winning solution to everyone. If somebody is only submitting to Pond5 and Adobe then it's more likely your advice will work, over somebody who is submitting to half a dozen or a dozen other sites that also generate a reasonable amount.

Is this kind of thing becoming commonplace with cheap subscription plans allowing anyone to download 1000s of clips for nothing?
1. BlackBox - evil 2. I have been loading on subscription stocks for many years, I am satisfied. Yes, maybe someone steals my video and places it on stocks, but I think that this does not bring me significant losses. In any case, I do not waste time looking for my work in the portfolios of others.
Evil?! They take a fee for Paypal transfers, they could be classed as expensive for what you get (and that's before you get others involved for keywording and editing), you lose a lot that you'd get doing it yourself (which might not be worth it for some) like analytics, knowing who has accepted your work, if and why your work has been rejected etc etc, and their Facebook group is just weird... mainly due to the (somewhat) 'enforced' positivity and censoring/avoidance of criticism. But evil?! No, they're not evil... they're a not exactly groundbreaking service which is useful to some and not to others.
If people are stealing videos through this service, then the service is evil.
Nobody is stealing content through Blackbox... they're buying content through other sites (most likely Elements, Motion Array or Storyblocks) and then uploading them to Blackbox as their own. So they're not stealing from BlackBox, and they're not stealing from Elements, Motion Array or Storyblocks (although it could be classed as fraud I guess) but they are breaching copyright laws and conducting intellectual property theft. In this instance, the 'service' is the concept of stock footage and copyright.

You lost me slightly on this part... how is BlackBox involved?
Blackbox also had stolen clips of mine that I came across when doing a search, but they have now removed the offending member and sent me an email to confirm they have done so.
Ok, thanks for clearing that up. One of the downsides of Blackbox I guess... if I see one of my clips then I know it's been stolen if it's a different account name. But if somebody has uploaded it via BB then I don't know if it's mine or if it's stolen if they all say BlackBoxGuild or whatever, so harder to recognise... unless you see two next to each other in the results!

I have reached out to BlackBox about my stolen videos. I know that their videos are from many contributors and I don't want to get their account suspended without them at least taking some steps to remove it, but as yet I can not get a reply from them, so I might in the coming days make a copyright claim against them as well.
You lost me slightly on this part... how is BlackBox involved? Also... I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's been lifted directly from one of the Black Panther movies! https://www.pond5.com/stock-footage/item/144390383-flight-found-beautiful-sunrise-over-wild-forest-mountains-su

Left polticians have a habit of calling anyone, that don't agree with them, a threat to democracy.
I've copied this from Wikipedia as they can sum it up better than me and I didn't want to miss anything out... Before, during, and after Election Day, Trump and numerous other Republicans attempted to subvert the election and overturn the results, falsely alleging widespread voter fraud and trying to influence the vote-counting process in swing states. Attorney General William Barr and officials in each of the 50 states found no evidence of widespread fraud or irregularities in the election. Federal agencies overseeing election security said it was the most secure in American history. The Trump campaign and its allies, including Republican members of Congress, continued to engage in numerous attempts to overturn the results of the election by filing 63 lawsuits in several states (all of which were withdrawn or dismissed), spreading conspiracy theories alleging fraud, pressuring Republican state election officials (including, notably, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, in a phone call that later became widely publicized) and legislators to change results, pressuring the Department of Justice to declare the election "corrupt" and intervene, objecting to the Electoral College certification in Congress, and refusing to cooperate with the presidential transition of Joe Biden. This culminated in a mob of Trump supporters attacking the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, after Trump repeatedly said that he would never concede the election. ...everything listed there pretty much sums up what a 'threat to democracy' looks like. I mean yeah, I agree what you're saying with regards to the political rhetoric and the whole us versus them mentality, but in this instance, it's not that a differing opinion is a threat to democracy... it's more that threatening democracy is a threat to democracy!

It would be interesting to read those who support Trump, why, and how it can be supported at all.
How can they not support Trump, he wants to make America great again. The country is divided close to 50-50, how can one side be claiming to be smarter, better or more popular than the other? You should ask why those others who are antiamerican support socialism or the overthrow of their government.
Who ever said you didn't have a sense of humour?! Good one!

While I saw him here a few times, I never bothered with the SS forums and have no real negative or positive view of Rinder either way... but... IMDB is basically Wikipedia for film, and the majority of additions and alterations are made by your average registered user.
Alterations and additions are usually reviewed, but that's more to make sure people aren't adding Brad Pitt as the main actor in the Matrix films, or Donald Trump as the director of Jaws. If I add myself as doing VFX on the Mandalorian (which I didn't) then it would more than likely be approved.
So there you go. And just to clarify... I'm not saying all that to give support to the idea that Rinder has falsified his credentials, that's the first I'm hearing about this to be honest, just to explain that IMDB is very much put in by people and artists.

If unlimited subscription sites start to have a big impact on the sales at SS, P5, iS etc etc... then I'd be surprised if they don't start offering unlimited subscriptions themselves, and maybe at some point, solely offering unlimited subscriptions. I mean the limited subscriptions they've started offering are no doubt influenced by Elements/Storyblocks etc, at least to some extent.
You may as well get on-board!

I had that a few times back in the day, not long after I'd started submitting to them. I can't remember the exact numbers, dates or my reasoning, but I had an assumption that they don't pay you if it's less than $100, as advertised, but they do pay you if it's less than $100 if you've been under $100 for a few payment dates. I could be completely wrong.

Envato Elements, Motion Array, Artgrid, Storyblocks... and a few smaller sites.

And for the unlimited subscription sites, somewhere from around a fraction of a cent, to about $16.50... hut heavily weighted towards the former.

As of 01/01/2023, sales on shutterstock are terrible. They are virtually non-existent. Stock is dead.
Let me remind you in what topic you write here: "What a cool SS, how well he sells" If you are not satisfied with the income from the SS, then what are you doing in this thread? Create your own theme, like what an uncool SS, how bad he sells.
