General Stock Discussion / Re: Say something Positive Thread
« on: April 14, 2011, 13:23 »
I love being back in USA (after 9 months in Siberia); I feel like a reptile in the heat here in Florida (not sure how long I can last here; from -20 to 90 degrees, a 110 degree change).  Have been working full-time getting my studio setup-that has been fun (with no money-it is fun to figure out how to make light stands from buckets of concrete, reflector stands from 1/2's, etc.  Will be ready to shoot by this weekend.

I have also started a new book; illustrated bad jokes.  I got the idea here on MSG when we were discussing doing similar shots to Yuri (girl with scale) in the Weird Al Yankovich style.  Here is one of the planned shots:  Harley bike in the background parallel to background; bald harley dude with tats leaning against seat facing camera-wearing black leather: all out of focus.  In foreground, cute girl in french maid outfit (mini-skirt type) bending over while changing the bag of a vacuum cleaner.  Harley dude looking at girl.
This part of joke on the top of the photo: "What is the difference between a Harley and a Vacuum Cleaner"
Punch line on the bottom:  "Location of the dirt bag"

My apologies to folks that love Harleys, I believe we can all laugh at ourselves.  There always seems to be a thread of truth in bad jokes, it is part of what makes them believable.

mine is overall 43,300 and 7 day 7,500 with 27 sold files, 817 files available; only on FT for 1.5 months.  Guess you could say I am pretty near the bottom, it is a long long way from 43300 to Lisa or Elena; can you two throw me a lifeline, I feel like I am drowning.

Wow.
Need to step up my game.

This is sweet stuff but I believe your game is just where you need it to be; producing the work the clients need and purchase.   This is the fun stuff you do after you work an 8 hr day or your weekends, IMHO

I am doing a book of illustrated jokes; nice images but not stocky, done after I finish my regular stocky work.

If DT really wants to take a progressive step, go back and review some of the older files; some of them are pure trash.  Granted  most have sales but that does not indicate quality.  Do a search for bald eagles; you will see older bald eagle in flight shots with underside of wings black (dark shadows), poor focus, poor lighting, etc.  Same thing for pets, some really trashy pet shots, never should be in a professional portfolio of selling images.  I am in favor of good fair standards of acceptance now and using these same standards to eliminate older files that would never get accepted now if submitted.  Why keep 12 million images in your database if 5 million of them are junk; purge this junk

Wow, this is depressing, it is amazing I am getting any sales at all.  As a new IS contributor, I just keep submitting without expecting any sales, kinda like Yay, Featurepics, etc.

Sometimes, the policies at DT are just crap; how much time does it really take to review a group of 100 images that are all similars; just hit the reject key for 99 of the images and allow the rest of the contributors submit a decent number of images each week.

I do not like their policy of similars but do not punish me because someone else will not follow the guidelines.  At least they allow us to upload and keep in the upload area until submission, that is what I do.

Mine is holding steady just above a $1.00 but usually increases toward the end of the month.

Now that you changed the title, I am no longer interested ;D

Tom

I am not sure the LLC is going to help; corps. will only protect you for mistakes, many lawyers will classify this mistake as willful negligence because of your clear failure to read the fine print.

Corps are a pain in the back side, filing tax documents, filing corp. papers, etc.  Better to take a step back and shoot more, submit less until you learn a bit more and read more of the fine print.

All that being said, I have heard GL is a bit more aggressive with rejections of logo/TM issues than others; I do not have a problem with their position; I have never had logo/TM issues.

85
Tom;

I would shoot (pun intended) for 50 images a week, 200/month average.  I don't feel 15/week is pushing yourself enough.  My goal is 200/month; but part of my goal is also to only upload quality images that might sell.

So shoot two days a week, one day to process the images and the last four for education.  Your best education will be during processing the images because you will see your mistakes and know what to study during your education sessions.

BTW, do not ignore the advice of Paulie Walnuts, he was spot on with his predictions about my success and possible income.  It is going to be a long road.

I am at roughly 1000 images online with monthly RPI of roughly 0.30/image but I am pretty new at this business also (one year in).

86
On the low end but only about 75 images online, increasing each week.

Thanks Lisa, a big fat zero of my images on PP

I have 1100 wildlife images in my port; I sell a 200-400 microstock images a month so wildlife/nature does sell.  Birds sell less; my big and medium mammals outsell my birds 5:1 or better.

For better or worse, I enrolled in the partner program at IS back in Feb. 2011; how do we find out if we have had any sales through the partner program?

Newbie Discussion / Re: iStock - To join or not to Join
« on: April 06, 2011, 05:45 »
I would encourage you to join IS for one reason, the learning experience.  Their acceptance criteria will teach you alot about image quality.  I would forget about making money with IS; my sole reason for recommending you join IS is for the learning experience.

You can only upload 18 images a week, so it will take forever to get a port online.  If you get 10 images a week accepted, you will only have 550 images after one year with IS; if you don't start now, you will have zero images on IS after then next year.

Thanks Shadysue;

I have readjusted my expectations; thanks for the real data.  Most of what I had heard about IS was from other microstockers on DT; not a reliable source, I guess.  I did not find out about MSG until FEb of this year.

What was I expecting?  I guess my expectations were not enlarged but my hopes were very high.

I hoped for 50-100 per month starting out

now I know to be more patient, keep uploading my 18 images a week then ignore them till the following week

I started with BigStock in Feb, sales were dead for the first month but have started to pickup; won't be buying any starbucks coffee yet but I am encouraged.  Then again, I had such low expectations that anything is encouraging.

I agree with Lisa, we need to support the middle and lower tier sites because the future of some of the top tier sites looks very uncertain.

March was my first full month with IS and I am completely disappointed.  I had heard such raving reviews during the past year and was really looking forward to joining the team.  I had my BME only because it was my first full month but I would not consider it worthy of a top tier agency.  DT and SS both gave me very respectable earnings last month; FT and IS should be dropped from the top tier.

Oh, the numbers; grand total of $13.94 for March for IS.  Granted I have a limited port online at IS but I was still expecting better results.

At this rate, I will make diamond a couple hundred years after my death.  My great great great grand children will be so proud of me; this is if my children have kids.

As a former DT exclusive, I'll add my 2 cents (which is about all I made from IS last month).  DT encourages exclusives in many ways and also encourages growth of microstock photographers.  They make it easy for newbies to enter the field and I believe this new pricing is to encourage the newbies by giving them a few more sales but not adding much to the bank account-most newbies are more impressed by seeing the DL then the money most will never collect (many never make it to the minimum payout before quitting).  On the other hand, DT recognizes that their "bread and butter" is the established pros and serious amateurs; this new pricing structure is a reward for the established folks as most of them have more than one download per image.

Add me to the camp that is pleased with the general way DT handles their contributors; they are the only one of the big four that I feel really values their contributors.  I know most of the DT staff on a first name basis; have exchanged many emails concerning the site with them and posted a few blogs to help the community.  On the other hand, I dropped my exclusive in March of this year because I was not making sufficient money from DT;  since dropping exclusive, my monthly income has multiplied by 4-5 times but my work load also multiplied by about 10 times (because many of the sites have yet to payoff for all the work).  Even though I dropped exclusive at DT; my sales at DT  are still within 70% of my former exclusive sales (number images sold and revenue average per download).

Five super models came into my room and ripped my clothes off, kissing me and telling me I was the best.  Couple minutes later I fell out of bed and woke up.  When are you going to wake up; this is a good fantasy totally up-supported by any facts.

I'm going back to bed, maybe the models will return!

Newbie Discussion / Re: Rejections- Rejections
« on: March 26, 2011, 00:32 »
Most common reason for rejection on SS is focus, in my opinion.  I have plenty of images that are tack sharp that were rejected for focus on SS; they tend to like more generous DOF

99
I am sure some newbie will dredge it up soon enough ;D

If you need it, buy it.  I have over $40K in photographic equipment; use every piece of it most every week.  All my camera bodies are middle tier (Nikon D300s and D7000); I owned a D3s once but sold it as it did not get enough use.  My most expensive piece of equipment is my 600mm f4 lens but I use it almost every day.

The good thing about quality equipment; you know it is your fault when a picture sucks!
