General Photography Discussion / July 2009 earnings breakdown
« on: August 01, 2009, 02:45 »
Ok these are my dollar earnings for July 2009

SS 37.9%
DT 17.7%
FT 16.5%

BS   7.5%
IS    7.5%
123   5.8%
StockXpert   3.8% *
FP     1.9%
CanStockPhoto   1.4%

Actually for my pound earnings FT should be #2 as a FT credit is worth 75p and a DT credit is worth about 60p. DT have been in a downward trend since April.

* worst month here in the last 18 months I had opted out of sub sales nearly a year ago so the Jupiter unlimited photo.com switch to iStock shouldn't have made a difference.

Sales at FP were dead until yesterday I noticed our cut is now 50%

General Stock Discussion / June 2009 earnings breakdown

This used to be favourite time of the month counting up all those $, now its quite depressing.

SS 36.7%
DT 19.9%
FT 14.3% WM-08

IS 8.1% WM-08
123 5.8% WM-07/08
BS 5.2% WM-07/08
StockXpert 5.1%
CanStockPhoto 2.7%
FP 2.2%

I only have 18 months of stats to look at but overall it was the worst month in the last 18 months with the exception of December'08.

3
Mine has risen to 19.8% and sub sales are decreasing every month.

I presume the rest of you are seeing a similar trend?

General - Stock Video / Footage now on sale at Fotolia
« on: May 01, 2009, 02:56 »
Supposedly they have 8,230 movie clips. I thought they would have waited until they had a few more.

I also thought they would be more PAL friendly with their strong user base in Europe but HD 1080 clips are only available in a downsized NTSC version.

If anyone works out how to browse within a footage portfolio let me know I want to check what they actually accepted of mine.

If anyone has a sale speak up!

Darn too slow this month to be first.

SS 34.9% *
DT 19.2%
FT 14.3%
IS  10.3% BME #
StockXpert 6.4%
123  5.0%
BS    5.0%
FP     2.7%
CanStockPhoto   2.2%

* Worst month since 2007 they used to make up 45% of my earnings
# pleasantly surprised as I stopped uploading a year ago

Overall slightly less than March 09 but slightly more than April 08

Shutterstock.com / SS Earnings breakdown 1Q 2009
« on: April 01, 2009, 12:18 »
I think I may have been reading too many reports on the credit crunch if I am referring to Jan-March as the 1Q (1st quarter) anyways

         Mar      Feb      Jan
Sub  74.6%  68.1%  72.8%
OD   18.3%  14.8%  15.3%
EL     3.2%     9.8%   3.3%
REF   1.0%     1.1%   1.1%
CD    0.3%     0.1%   0.2%
VID   2.6%     6.2%   7.3%

So March wasn't a great month for footage but those on-demand sales are getting impt

Software - General / Re: screen capture video software
« on: March 30, 2009, 02:45 »
One site I check out for their tutorials uses

"CamStudio is freely available and is open-source software. Used with the free CamStudio Lossless codec, the video quality is outstanding at the price of a very large AVI file."

But it will produce a SWF as well, I have yet to use it so I don't know how well it works. It appears there is a bug that SWF files will only play with IE, you can fix it yourself by editing the html file.

I may use for giving tech support to my dad it may be easier than explaining things over the phone.

So far four reviewed two accepted two rejected unfortunately rejected clip e-mail just stated their ID number and a list of nine possible rejection reasons, so rather hard to fix and resubmit.

11
I had 20 back up sales in the entire month of Feb at SS

Then nothing in March until the 26th when I had 44 and another 10 on the 27th

Adobe Stock / Fotolia reviewing submitted videos
« on: March 28, 2009, 04:19 »
I had my first acceptance e-mail on Friday 27th March for a clip which was submitted on 30th of January.

It seems they intend to sell both Pal and NTSC versions I submitted a PAL version. Does any other site do this?

The big question when will the videos go on sale???

StockXpert.com / Re: Stockxpert makes things right....
« on: February 20, 2009, 16:47 »
Just wondering how many folk actually told StockXpert that they had opted out but were having Photo.com and Juipter unlimited sub sales?

I reported twice and was told if I had opted out less than 90 days ago files could still be in photo.com databasem, otherwise there was a problem.  :'(

I am glad to see they did the right thing fixed the problem, admitted it and compensated those affected.  ;D

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia changes to Exclusivity and other News
« on: February 18, 2009, 14:09 »
Glad to hear the $20 EL was a typo

Regarding the price and percentage change

For newbies (top  current price bottom new price)

XS 1 x 0.33 = 0.33
     1 x 0.30 = 0.30 3 cents less

S 2 x 0.33 = 0.66
   2 x 0.30 = 0.60 6 cents less

M 3 x 0.33 = 0.99
     4 x 0.30 = 1.20 21 cents more

L 4 x 0.33 = 1.32
     5 x 0.30 = 1.50 18 cents more

XL 5 x 0.33 = 1.65
     6 x 0.30 = 1.80 15 cents more

XXL 6 x 0.33 = 1.98
     7 x 0.30 = 2.10 12 cents more

I actually checked the last 100 DLs at FT to see what the proportion of XS, S, M, L etc was. I was pleasantly surprised ;D for that sample. I had almost as many M as XS so calculating for a newbie I would have earnt more with the new price structure than the current. Obviously if you have a very high proportion of XS and S sales then your earnings will go down  :'(

Just checked the next 100 and I would have earnt more with the new structure.

Hopefully in March I will see the same trend

Dreamstime.com / NEW DT earnings stats in a spreadsheet
« on: January 18, 2009, 15:49 »
For all you stats junkies  ;D

Now on your uploads and earnings page at Dreamstime you can download an zipped excel file (which will also open with "open office calc")

There are multiple sheets listing your files in chronological order only

with DLs, views and total earnings.

The first sheet lists all your accepted files then subsequent sheets list all the files accepted in a particular month of December 2008, November 2008 etc with DLs, views and total earnings up to 31/12/2008. If you scroll down to the bottom of that sheet you can see how many files you uploaded that month and how much they have earnt until 31/12/2008.

Also if you know the month of a particular shoot you can quickly check to see what files were the earners. There are no thumbnails just the image ID and the title but with the former you can see the image in question.

General Stock Discussion / Re: How do you back up your images?
« on: December 28, 2008, 05:32 »
backing is important and I would recommend multiple medias and a secure (perhaps different location) obviously frequency is the big issue.

Obviously for DVDs pick a decent brand and burn at a lower speed (x4) to minimize chance of errors if your burner has a verification procedure might be worth the extra minutes.

I think for HD several medium sized ones is safer than just one mega drive just in case that screws up obviously if the safe (location) has limited space that will limit the number of hard drives stacks of DVDs.

I think there was a thread about this ages ago because I digressed and started talking about HDs being sensitive to EMP.

So anyone got a blu-ray burner though if one of those discs has an error that is 25 GB lost

General Stock Discussion / Christmas day Downloads?
« on: December 26, 2008, 18:41 »
Just wondering did anyone have any?

For myself

SS 14 subs (3 referred) *
DT 1 small (7 referred)
FT one sub one XS (5 referred)
123 1 sub
StockXpert 0
BS 0

* actually more DLs than two Saturday's this month (December really does suck)

Not sure what is more sad downloading on major holiday or checking to see.

23
I wrote a short guide to Microstock footage a while back which should answer a few questions regarding sound/clip length/codec.

Microstock photo guide

iStock seem to love Apple codec so quicktime pro $30

Any editorial footage submitted to SS needs a detailed title regarding when/where/what otherwise they reject it and you have to reupload

24
Shutterstock.com / mouse over previews at SS
« on: December 12, 2008, 13:59 »
same feature that FT have had for a while

Now at SS once selected, when your cursor passes over an image thumbnail in the search results a large watermarked thumbnail appears.

It may increase sales when the thumbnails doesn't do their images justice.
