I think the real question should be why are you redirecting buyers from your website to iStock where you will earn 20% as a non exclusive. Unless of course you are hoping for some $10 buyer referals from attracting new buyers to istock.

If you were going to that trouble of setting up links to a microstock site Featurepics would be a better choice as you can set the price and receive 70% so if you are selling an 8mp photo for $5 you get $3.50 sure beats the $1.14 -$1.44 you would be getting  from a 6 credit sale at iStock.

Anyway just a suggestion, I don't bother with watermarks until its blog size 300 x 400 or so.

How do you change from PP to MB on DT?

I have checked the site quite thoroughly (or so I thought) and I found only a mention of Paypal or bank cheque but there appeared to be no obvious way to switch payment type

Bigstock.com / Big Stock copy categories from previous image
« on: August 29, 2007, 09:44 »
new copy categories from previous image in upload image section  ;D

If you have a batch of similar images it can be very useful copying all three categories but only from the previous image  :'(.

Not as useful as DT's copy categories or all info from previous ten images or any image if you know the image number, but certainly a step in the right direction.

Still quite a wait for reviews but my best month at BS

iStockPhoto.com / iStock new temporary upload limits
« on: August 23, 2007, 03:54 »
there is a thread on istock's front page dated the 20th of August that the upload limits for non-exclusives

Base        25
Bronze     30
Silver        35
Gold         40
Diamond  45

Though this week because they got swamped by the unlimited uploads for exclusives over the weekend they have changed the limits again.

Supposedly per 24 hours though I (as a non-exclusive bronze) seem to have 10 files/48 hours supposedly it will reset to files/168 hours next week. Personally i prefer the once a week upload.

I always type my titles and keywords (separated by commas) into a text file and save that with the images in their folder for safe keeping then use pixvue.

Unfortunately their home page is no longer active, plenty of third party sites to download from

Off Topic / Re: Alamy Online Uploads
« on: August 17, 2007, 02:52 »
You need at least a 6mp camera 8 mp would be better and you need to upsize to about 3455 x 5150 which would be a 50.5 meg uncompressed TIFF (mimimum is 48 meg) but we can send JPEGS now  ;D.

If they still wanted TIFFS the online upload would be fairly pointless (2 photos per hour with my broadband).

Payment is by cheque
British pounds, US Dollars, euros or other currencies?
I know my cheque came direct from their bank so you might be able to get cheques in quite a wide range of currencies

They charge $8 for a cheque and there was another charge for the currency conversion so much for the 65/35 split.

Payment also by direct bank transfer but you have to give them your bank details (scary!)

no paypal as far as I know.

For those of you who moan about having to wait a week for payment from Microstock beware Alamy make you wait (I was told up to 10 weeks) after you clear the $250 barrier as they give their clients 30 days credit.

For example I sold a photo in September 2006 another in April 2007 which brought me over the magic number but it was early August before a cheque arrived though strangely the first of my June sales was cleared in time so was also included.

Total sales five photos  ;D from an entirely RM portfolio of about 2,600

If the photo is of a popular subject I usually send to the micros.  If in doubt search the Alamy site. As remember as a Newbie your Alamy index will be low so your photos will go to the back and their is only one search criteria no searching by contributor, age, Dls etc.

It was $100 for paypal but now its $50

HOWEVER  :'(

You have to change the minimum payout amount yourself, payment may be automatic but that change isn't.

1 Log in

2 click on my account in the top right corner above the solid bar of colour

3 click on personal info under account information on left of screen

4 change you minimum payout amount.  ;D

Well my backlog was cleared at StockXpert with expected results

whole screens of "we are not looking for such images that this time" I think the acceptance rate was less than 10% for about 50 images. A pity as some of these unwanted images have been downloaded several times at SS already.

I guess some of us may have to rethink the shelf life of our images I remember someone stating 5 years which may be the case for some images but if some little **** decides he is going to resell or give away your images.

I have glanced few recent threads at SS regarding illegal reselling of images, the small fish website got fried and the big fish website is still unresolved.

I suppose maybe as time goes on the agencies will fire reviewers and start hiring lawyers.

Certainly one reason to think about going exclusive.

It would be nice to see you some crucifixations to make people think twice about doing this.

How many folk actually go hunting for illegal reselling of their images?

Its not FTP its an activeX plugin similar to some of the microstock ones. Quite nice as you can upload files or folders and it shows you the percentage progress, just don't navigate from that page/browser tab.

I only uploaded a few files about 30 or so but it worked fine and they were even reviewed far quicker than the 5 week wait.

I even received a cheque at the beginning of the month finally.

I have some comparison tables in my guide which show the differences in how much you images will sell for, minimum size requirements, upload limits.

My microstock guide

Some agencies will accept virtually anything but sell virtually nothing whereas others will accept a much smaller percentage but they actually have some customers so the photos sell.

Bare in mind that the microstock agencies are all very strict about the photo being royalty free no company logos etc and others are fussy about digital noise, colour profiles etc so you make to have rework some photos.

If you have spent all that time processing a photo and keywording the amount of extra time submitting to more than one agency isn't that much more. Certainly not a business to have all your eggs in one basket.

Good luck

FP have indeed low sales but they let you set your own price and give you 70%, have virtually 100% acceptance rate and no categories to input so submitting is fairly painless.

If you have your own website which attracts visitors it is worth linking some of your best photos to the picture for sale at FP instead of directing them to other sites where you can't set the price or receive 70%.

Sorry to hear Ian you are still stuck in the review backlog, which started at the beginning of July with reviewers taking holidays. For me its has cleared with a 1-3 day wait for reviews.

General - Top Sites / July 2007 Earnings breakdown
« on: August 01, 2007, 01:59 »
Well better than June not as great as May.

More earnings at every site compared to June with the exception of iStock who seem to be on a downwards trend not surprising really as they only received about 120 photos this month and the others got 742 photos and illustrations.

Shutterstock 51.6% BME  ;D

DT                  13.4%
Fotolia            8.0% *

123                   6.8% BME  ;D
StockXpert                  6.7%
BigStock                  6.3% BME  ;D

iS                      5.6% worst month of 2007  :'(  :'(

Featurepics      1.1%
CanStockPhoto                  0.3%
SPM                  0%

And not a single extended license sale anywhere  :'(  :'(

* I can't get any sensible results from the search engine but I am getting regular sales, so i continue to upload. Maybe slightly less DLs than the spring.
It is very annoying they include free image downloads in your total downloads and I had a few rogue free images which screw up the stats.

Microstock News / Re: What is your opinion on Albumo?
« on: July 24, 2007, 02:12 »
There is a lot of talk about exclusivity versus multiplicity, I think care should be taken uploading to sites that are selling photos too cheap

Just checked Albumo's numbers again if you upload an 8mp photo you will earn 50-60c per download regardless of the size until you reach 50 downloads when you can earn $1.

Whereas the same 8mp photo would be earning

StockXpert $2.50
DT $1.50
FT $1.33
iS $1.14

Extended licences (with your 50% cut) are even worse can you opt out?????

Basic licence $4.50 up to 500 copies
Enhanced $6 up to 25,000 copies
Extended $8 up to 100,000 copies
Unlimited  $10 unlimited copies multiple products

I wish I looked at those numbers closely before I uploaded still waiting to keyword so i may delete them.
