General Stock Discussion / Re: Fotolia Views
« on: June 16, 2016, 10:22 »
Maybe they added the views from Adobe.
Even though sales have totally dried this month (I was very happy with Fotolia sales until May) I figure that at least views are useful to understand which of my clip have commercial potential. But I might be wrong

Pond5 / Re: Media pricing blog at Pond5
« on: June 13, 2016, 15:27 »
Guys,
you have no idea.
Those clips in the membership thingy are getting hundreds (probably thousands) of downloads each.
Basically all people who are in Pond 5 are experiencing no sales, apart for some of the participating artists who still have some sales, as they were pushed up in the search engine. But even some of them are complaining. Anyone else has no more sales in the pond.
But even on SS, FT, and so on people are reporting horrible sales.
Basically 50% of what used to be the video clip market that we all used to enjoy is now going in this dead sea were artists get no royalties
This cancer is spreading very bad. It remainds me of medieval plague

I am at the begin of my video microstock experience. I need hints on workflow for Managing Uploading and Keywording multi-agencies.

What I do now.

Let me say I have 5 video files (.mov) to be uploaded on 3 different agencies.

I open ftp with first agency.....send files.
I open ftp with second agency.....send files.
I open ftp with third agency.....send files.

I go to the website of first agency....keyword and submit each video
I go to the website of second agency ....copy and paste keywords from the first agency and submit
I go to the website of third agency ....copy and paste keywords from the first agency and submit

Is there a way to make my workflow better?  :(

P.S. Agencies: SS, P5, VB, FO, DT

There are several programs actually. I'm using this one: http://stocksubmitter.com/

Interesting Irina, the problem is that the only info in the link is a video in russian...
Anybody else using Stocksubmitter?
Is there a version in English?

I have dropped my exclusive status and this is one reason why! I don't care to sell 4k the same as HD, I will not and have stopped loading any 4k to iStock.

The big question is, is it worth the extra effort to render out a 4K and an HD version of your clips just to give the HD to iStock where you still may only get between $3 and $9 per download?

That said, I do throw some clips iStock's way every now and then, and yes, some of those clips are HD versions of my 4K files I specifically render at 1080p just for iStock.  Generally, I do this only when I have some extra time and not have other work to do at other agencies.

Only time will tell if I continue this.

Waste of time - you shouldn't accept less than US$25 net/average per download, meaning Istock is a no go for video.
What you are saying was perfectly true until a couple of months ago.
I would have never have thought of letting istock even sniff one of my file.
Everything has changed now with p5 membership program:
Basically they are giving good hand picked files covering almost everything for practically nothing and they pay no royalties to artist.
The video stock market is dead, P5 killed it, no more sales to be had. So now I even consider uploading to istock or Envato.
Or if someone wants my portfolio for a couple of drinks, he can have it

Personally I don't agree with you. Stock video market is far from dead, you just need to have niches. P5 pay monthly retainers for all the membership videos. Since the membership I've had more sales than ever and my minimum prices are around $79. I have niches and I find if I submit cliche videos already well stocked then they get rejected.
I really hope you are right when you say that the vidoeo market is not dead, by I am frankly starting to thing about letting it go.
When you talk about monthly retainers you mean the ridicolous half a dollar per clip per month, or I am missing something? When I said p5 pays no royalties  I meant that artists don't get any money per each sale. Have I got this wrong?
I suppose you are in the membership program and that explain why you are still getting some sales: apparently partecipating artists are the only one still getting some sales for the moment, as they have been pushed up in the search engine. I wonder wif you still will have sales once the whole market becomes aware of the crazy bargain in the mambership bloody thing.
I don't know if I have niches, but all I can say is that I have been uploading clips for about one year, I was very happy the way things were going until April, every month was BME, I was averaging one clip per day of sales until the P5 membership program came around.
Ever since the p5 thingy started my sales disappeared immediately, on every agencies. And I perfectly knew it would happen, because they are practically giving very good clips covering mostly everything, basically for free

iStock/Getty has been great for me to learn to shoot stock. My income has been falling for months no matter what I shot so I found it time to move on. I could go on a rant about them but in all honesty this is just a business decision. I want to focus on high end 4k work for the most part and if Stocksy opens for video I would try there. If not I will do exclusive shoots for Dissolve and other stuff I will spread out to others. I can't see the sense in shooting more and more just to see my income go down for months. Getty can be good and the next mont I will have 80% of the video sales for  $10.00 or less. I am just finished with the games of that. Still love what I do and I know there is a long few months ahead as my clips get indexed. I do other video work as well so I won't go hungry :-)
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
Sadly it is not the best moment for the video market

You are really overestimating the power of Pond5. The video market will be ok for many years to come.

The video market is very small, much smaller than the one for still images.
P5 was a major player.
The membership program is by far the biggest dumping in history: the price of clips went from around $75 to single figure overnight.
P5 are advertising very hard and they have now plenty of money for it

Plenty of big figure non-membership POND5 sales to be had. You just have to shoot the right stuff and create your own niche.
[/quote]
Are you in the membership program? There are a lot of rumors that contributors to the program had their clips pushed up in the search engine. Anyway they seem to be the only ones still getting some sales.
Personally I was very happy eith the way things were going until the membership stuff started. Now sales have disappeared everywhere

884
yes. Youll earn 4-8 dollars for a full size 4k sale.
Not very exciting, also considering that they ask for a specific codec.
I never considered uploading to istock in the past, but now that P5 has distroyed the video market I might give it a shot.
Maybe just HD, giving away 4k for this price really is too much

Yes, huge increase in view last month. Decent sales though.
Sales have desappeared in all other agencies for me.
No wonder since p5 is giving clips away almost for free with their membership program, really killing the video market

I managed to upload footage via FTP (not 4k).
Now I am on the "manage media" part.
I enter a title, the keywords and my location, then click on save and it gets stuck there for ages.
Is this normal?

I usually have to log out. close the browser then log back in when that happens. So yes, it happens, but not all the time.

Are you using a CSV file for your keywords and titles? I suppose if you have just a handful of clips that is fine but I use a CSV file and just upload that and all my clips are tagged.
I never understood how a CSV file works, so I enter title and keyword but cut and paste on each individual clip.
Also, if I understand correctly editorial stuff has to be entered in a separate batch, right?

...percentage of royalty doesn't matter.  Only thing that matter is how much we get in $.  If they sell for $1000 and give us 10%, it's $100 royalty per clip which is much higher than SS and others.
<sigh>

Yeah, I hear ya.  Sigh.  Reading this thread is exactly like the same discussions about photos from a couple years ago.   And here we are now with the stills market tits up, just like the 'alarmists' and 'complainers' predicted.
Good point: there are a lot of similarities with what happened with the still market a few years ago, but also some differences.
The video market is a much smaller one and most of the customers are professionals (production, Tvs, media, advertising) who really don't care if they pay a clip $79 or $400 or a few 000 like in Getty's case, as long as they find what they want. At the bottom of the market there are maybe the bloggers, but they are only a small part and again they prefer to buy a good clip at $70 than a bad one at $10.
In the still market there are also a lot of individual customers, buying maybe something to post on FB, so lowering the prices to a couple of dollars opened a huge market.
In video prices could have stayed around the $50-100$ per clip for at least a couple of years and then gradually lower to reach single digit in at least 5 years.
P5 membership program is a dumping of unprecedented dimension, bringing overnight the market price for a clip from $70 to single digit. Such a crazy sudden price war never happen in the still market

So, apparently nobody is uploading video at istock.
Can someone tell me what file format is required for HD?

Here is a list of requirements both for application (it's lowres!) and usual HD:

http://www.istockphoto.com/help/sell-stock/training-manuals/video/digital-video-requirements

Looks like they still doesn't accept 4K...

Many thanks Irina. This is what I was looking for.
So apparently they require a specific format, I don't know if it is worth wasting the time to re render my clips

Very few but some. I sell more on 123 than on Fotolia. There are three price tiers you can choose.

I wouldn't mess with 123 unless you also sell photos or vectors. The video sales go a long way to bump up ranking.
Can you develop on his please?
How do the rankings and the price tiers work?

I have yet to upload videos to IS because of (potentially perceived and not real) difficulty in doing so. I am approved for video but haven't figured out if it's worth my time to figure out how to upload.

That said, whether it's worth it or not to me has more to do with what I receive from IS in terms of $$ than what they sell it for. IS has the lowest commission rates for photographers, too. But their images sell for similar prices as other sites. Same with videos. You might make less but the videos are not necessarily selling for the breadcrumbs they could be selling for at P5 or other places (Big stock, envato, etc).
I just read in another thread that apparently istock requires a file format different from other agencies.
If that is the case it is definitely not worth bothering

so you want to f*** the video market even more by uploading to istock. bravo smart move
I am not sure, just enquiring.
The damage is already done. After the bloody membership thingy the market is already gone.
The new normal is single digit for a clip. No more sales on p5 and SS and FT will have to react and lower hte prices.
The only people that can save the video market are the artist partecipating to the p5 scheme by pulling out their files

So far I have avoided uploading video in low paying agencies and I have tried to keep my prices as high as possible.
But now the infamous membership program of P5 has killed the video market, so I am ready to upload even for breadcrumbs.
I am interested in trying istock even if I have heard that commissions for artist are incredibly low.
I have been around their web site, but I find it extremely confusing and cannot find the information I am looking for:
- First of all is it interesting to sell video there? (apart from the extremely low commission)
- What kind of file format is required for HD video?
- I understand that there is a limit for weekly uploads. How does it work?
- Do they have a forum?

Many thanks for replies

Pond5 / Re: Time to give up on Pond 5.....
« on: May 31, 2016, 06:44 »
Was just looking at my numbers for April and May, and didn't realize that Pond really fell off a cliff.  The last two months are about 10% of previous months.  Just a complete collapse.  Ouch.
It is not surprising.
In the membership customers can have 10 cips for the price of 1, they don't have any reasons at all to buy from the core collection, considering that there are 200k good quality, hand picked clips covering most subjects without duplications.
This is going to kill the video market if we don't react

897
I am not sure we are talking about the same thing.
I am referring to the search within P5. Are you talking about results in search engines like Google?
Can you develop about working on the SEO? The only thing I know is to enter the title, descriptio and keywords>

But anyway my own files that have sold well and used to appear at the top of the relative searches by popularity until a few weeks ago now are buried several pages down

Yes, I'm talking about the P5 internal search (Best match, which is default). I haven't noticed a difference in search placement. Sales will bring up the rank, time will bring it down.

A simple search like "typing laptop" yields 23,745 results and I find some of my clips (with sales) right away. The membership content consists of 1,547 files and are mixed in well with the standard marketplace content (none above row 4). The top results aren't any different if you choose "Core Library", although for some reason it's easier to find Membership content below if you do.

If you order results by Popular the membership content comes even further down.

I absolutely do not believe they favor membership content in general search (because I can see that just by searching), but of course, if you ONLY want to find membership content if you're part of the program you will filter out the rest.
Thank you for the explaination, very clear.
By the way, I was not saying that the files from the membership are put up in the search engine, I was talking about files from people who contribute to membership

That is simply not true. Work on your SEO instead. I am not in the membership program and only have a little over 500 files but some of my clips show up in the second row on VERY common searches with 36,000+ results.

Other clips with 0 sales show up at place 80 out of 2,100 results for another pretty common search term so that really doesn't look like they're "pushed down" in the results...

Selling on Depositphotos and Motionelements you could quickly recoup expenses of helicopter and red camera
Would you care to develop on this?
I have never heard anything about these two. Do they sell video? Are they any interesting?

They are very interesting and sell video.
Thanks, I will look into it

Fun fact: This WEEK alone axiomimages sold aerials at Pond5 for a whopping $12,322 ($6,161 for them)!

So there is plenty of money in good aerials, and Pond5 isn't completely dead yet.  ;D
