About a year after I started I was really proud to make my $220 car payment off monthly earnings.  lol.  Hope that helps.

Solid move.  I'm all for it!

Glidecam is another option.  You can get smooth shots without having to charge more batteries and depend on motors working.
This is what i started with, i was trying to find a more compact glidecam and thats how i got to the roxant type stabilizers.

The issues remain the same though, takes time to balance, mostly horizontal shots, takes some getting used to for the knack of the two hand operation.
I hear ya.  I get smooth shots out of the glidecam but sometimes I screw it up.  It's not easy.  I also have 2 motorized gimbal and both have presented issues.  I usually know what went wrong with the glidecam.  The motorized gimbals seem to have weird glitches at the wrong time.  I just don't fully trust em.

HD will sell but 4K will sell better in the future.  If you put a lot of energy into filming great shots, you might regret not investing a little more to get a 4k drone.

A lot of market research.  Dig through some successful portfolios and topics to start switching your mind into shooting for microstock .  It's definitely a different game than shooting for other gigs.  Film in 4k and find some niches.  Good luck!

Oh yeah, you're all right.  We should take time away from processing footage to complain and start petitions.  No!  Not one comment on here or petition signed is going to change their business decision.  Weak and powerless is going on a forum to complain like a sissy.  Buck up and get back to work if you're strong enough to adapt.  Wining is not speaking up for you self interest.  Not you or anyone on this forum is actually changing the business decisions of these big companies.  So you have the decision to accept the rule change and keep playing the game or sit on the sidelines and complain.  I really don't care what ya choose.  The more people complain and hold back from uploading, the more money I can potentially make.  I'm just trying to keep things positive.  And yes I fully understand what's happened here and why everyone's so mad... I just don't think that response is a productive choice when it comes to business.  Good luck everyone!

I'm blown away by everyones response.  $25 isn't enough for an HD sale?  $100 for 4k?  That's way better than all these under $20 4k sales I've had flooding in recently.  People complain about how bad their business model was before, and then complain about it when they make a change... and now a petition?  That's crazy!  It's not like they dropped it to 5%.  It's still 50%!  That's good in this game.  They should have some money to spend on marketing now, which usually creates more sales.  But good ahead and write them off if you want.

Tyson, you don't seem to see the big picture. They're driving down market prices while also massively cutting our commissions, which is bad enough in itself but gets worse if/when it encourages other companies to do the same. We are the suppliers in an industry. When our profit is squeezed - especially in dramatic cases like this - if we do not respond as suppliers in any other industry would, then that is economic suicide. We've seen this play out with stock photography, and plenty of people here, myself included, will do all we can to not have that process repeat in stock footage.

SpaceStockFootage: why would you think there has to be a murder in order to  use words like "betrayal," "back-stabbing," "crap" excuses, etc.? It's a betrayal for a company to market themselves as especially contributor-friendly and then make a massive 50% cut in commissions. And it is crap to paste it over with hollow excuses. Do you really think they're going to increase sales enough to make up that 50%? Do you think even they believe that? Of course not, it's a false hope meant to pacify us. So what do you do when a business partner takes 50% of your money and then gives a BS reason about why he took it?

Let's address the obvious problem. The businesses are strong and centralized, we as individual suppliers are weak and widely dispersed. They're always looking to increase profit and undercut the competition, and to do that they'll always have an eye toward paying their suppliers less. Every single time they make a move in that direction, we owe it to ourselves as business people to take a stand and say no. By not uploading, by deleting portfolios, and especially by then telling the companies that you're taking those actions, we let them know that there are economic consequences to squeezing us. The more unified we are in that, the more powerful the response, then the more economically defended we are in the long term. So please don't shrug this event off. Don't take a "it's not so bad" attitude or a defeatist attitude. Simply take one single minute to sign the petition and share it with your friends. And if you have other ideas to protect our interests, please share them.

I see the big picture very clearly.  This modern outrage culture looks exhausting.  It seams to me that people are getting so caught up in complaining that they are really missing the big picture.  Wasting time speaking out about this will not help you succeed in any way.  Adapt and get back to work!!!  And please quite saying this is driving down market prices.  $25 for HD and $100 for 4K isn't driving anyones prices down.  I just sold a video for under $5 on Shutterstock.

I also do this for a living.  I just don't think Videoblocks cutting commission from 100% to 50% is a reason to publicly speak out against them and start a petition.  And for anyone else doing this for a living, isn't it a bad business move to burn a bridge with one of the few companies that sells stock footage?  Let's say they do invest this money wisely and sales increase from them doing more marketing... 50% commission from a company that can sell videos is good.  As far as #facts about amateurs underselling for beer money, I know nothing about that.  I do know now that 50% commission from one company is standard, but with another company, it can get a petition started against them.

It's not possible to make this sort of money from microstock. Some people will claim it is, however most contributors are earning less than $500 a month. At the very best it can earn you a few expenses. Definitely keep the day job and only do micro if you enjoy the hobby of shooting stock.

Not possible?  Definitely is!  If you work hard enough at this industry and jump on opportunities, There's a lot of money to be made.  If you put in lazy work with unrealistic goals, you can end up bitter spending more time posting on this forum then grinding out sellable content.

« on: May 29, 2018, 14:19 »
My couple hundred photos earn a pretty consistent $20 per month

38
I've been filming with the same for certain action angles.  Just started filming with them this winter snowboarding.  Had a couple sales.  They're good for action shots and creative angles but don't really give a cinematic look for some situations.

39
Nice.  Yeah that was some nice work.  A good combination of effects.

We get low and high priced sales.  Marketing and the internet are very complex with each sale being used for something completely different than the last.  I guess to me $1.50 sales really don't matter when they're made up by $180 sales.  If I'm gonna spend my time doing this to make money, then that has to be the overall goal... making money!  Not getting caught up in small stat details.  iStock and Shutterstock are both getting lower and lower on some video sales but each month are making more and more money.  So why care?  I'm having my best month ever at Shutterstock and it's the 23rd.  Should I deactivate my portfolio because of a couple $1.50 sales last week?

41
I have a couple time-lapse videos that sell very well.  It can be an easy transition for a photographer if you shoot raw time-lapses.  Similar editing.  If you live near a city that can provide a lot of options.  Nature time-lapse shots don't sell quite as well for me.

42
If you have a database of quality pics and vids then there's money to be made.  Not easily though.  It'll take a lot of hard work.

Not sure if this has been answered, but does Wemark read embedded meta data?

Still uploading but I'm in the same boat with sales.  None last month.  That's a first with Videoblocks.  Might have to do with the rebranding to Storyblocks.  They could've lost some SEO or something.

45
Unless I'm missing something, it looks like any images on Getty will have more reach across the internet through google.  I'm struggling to come up with anything negative about this.  Is it just that anything and everything posted on this forum about Getty/iStock gets a couple pages of negative comments assuming they're screwing contributors over.

46
Today??  Too much stat checking...not enough shooting, processing, and uploading!  Temporary glitch or not, if you see no sales, get to work and quite wasting time talking about it here.

Sounds like it might just be a temporary thing.  Surprisingly, January was my best month ever on Getty.  Actually more than double my best month ever.  I can't hate on that.

Except if buyers had spent that money on your work anywhere else you would have made more.

True. But I don't buy into the theory that if you pull your portfolio from Getty, the same buyers would go to other agencies to buy your clips.  I believe they'll just buy similar clips from someone else on Getty.  I'd rather have my clips on both to get farther reach.  If a customer is searching Getty, that most likely means they have an account with Getty and having your clips  on other sites won't be seen by them.

True, but you must still "hate on that", because you only get 15%, instead of 30% (or more) from other agencies. Even on regular subs you lose 35% if your customers buy from IS instead of SS, let alone on those insulting $0.19 (or much less).

Isn't it something to "hate on"?

If only we could find ways to incentivize IS customers to migrate to better paying agencies (e.g. see the email I posted above)!

I guess there's plenty of stuff one could find to hate on in this industry.  I love Videoblocks, but I earned twice as much with iStock/Getty in January.  When it really comes down to it, why care about the other details.  And customers aren't buying on IS instead of SS, they're buying on IS as well as SS.  Completely different customers.

I would think the overall income would far out way stats like rpd.

You'd think so, but some people won't even upload to some places based things other than overall income... mainly sale price and commission rate... so they never even have an opportunity to find out what overall income that site would bring.

Like my post on Motion Array. Because you get around $3.50 a download, I got the usual comments... cheapening your work, ruining the market, happy to accept pennies etc. But I don't really care how much I get per download, I just care that in my very first week of selling there...  I made more than I did in the whole of February on Bigstock Photo, Deposit Photos, Dreamstime, 123RF, Fotolia and probably iStock.

A lot if people aren't interested though. As long as the RPD is acceptable for them, then $100 a month can be good and $500 a month can be bad.

Much wisdom in what you're saying.  I originally had thoughts like that about Videohive for selling 4K so low, but now I'm trying to upload there, hoping they approve me to use the beta uploader.  I was contacted through email by the guys at Motion Array about contributing there.  I responded with a couple basic questions and never heard back.  Maybe I'll look into it more.  I always appreciate your perspective on things.
