General Stock Discussion / Re: Pond5 "Good News"!
« on: March 21, 2019, 16:11 »
This is a race to the bottom - of contributor share percentage.

They have seen that the others get away with 30% and people still happily send their stuff in, so they think "what the heck, why not go to 40%, then in a while, 30%".

This means a MAJOR upswing in earnings for them. 20% up on April 8th in one easy move. That is an ENORMOUS increase in earnings for a company. They know people aren't going to leave, just be angry on the forums for a while, and then it all goes back to normal. Well, except for 20% higher earnings for Pond5.

i agree. it's a ended business for 99% of contributor soon in little time..hope many won't based their   earning and life on micro and have a family too i won't literally was to be in their pants...sonn they will go 30 225 20 15 and 10...i'm still surprised ss is at  38% but s soon as they will lose royalties be sure they will cut royalty.
the only ututure in photography is talent and commission. stock are less profitable than staying outside a shop and asking for a dollar to the customer who enter.
Shutterstock is not at 38%, where did you get that idea?

yes sorry i was doing the % based on subsritpition...anyway fact is that...every agency red is falling down...thats a fact. in a year we will talk about much much lower earning per   download i bet y pants. free photos will be the future for most uses, only top notch production and high level creative will make a life ou of commercial photography.
That's not the % you get from subscriptions either.

Maybe 0.38 for subs

Pond5 / Re: Letter to pond5 and quick Poll for contributors
« on: March 21, 2019, 15:57 »
Why should it be evenly divided they want exclusive content, nonexclusive content just isn't as valuable.

No stock clip is exclusive for the customer if it can be bought more than once. It's just another way to be able to use the word "exclusive" in marketing.

It's more valuable for Pond5, sure, because they get more customers. It's not more valuable for the customer, or the contributor.

Definitely, customers don't care if a clip is exclusive P5 or not. P5 makes it sound like they're doing the customer a favour, but they just don't want them to shop around. They're greedy, why not offer 70% for exclusive and leave it at 50% for non exclusive if they are doing so much for us contributors? Oh and also they never mentioned price matching in the town hall, that's quite an important part that they purposely forgot.

Time to bump all the prices up by 25% to get the same share as before.

Yay, found them on DT, still can't work out how to message them!!!

Any idea anyone? there's no obvious link to message from a profile page.

Yes it's not easy but you can leave a comment on one of their photos. Once you're on the photo page, click on the 3 dots on the right near extended licences. It will appear in the comments section on their dashboard.

Keep in mind that iStock only requires exclusivity on commercial photos, so you can still upload editorial and RM to other agencies.
It can be worth it.

''Being Exclusive means that, for the file type(s) that you are Exclusive for, you agree that you cannot license any of that type of content in a royalty-free model elsewhere. So, for example, if you are Exclusive for Photos, you cant license any Photos with a competitor under the royalty free model, even images that youve never submitted to iStock.

You can still produce content in a work for hire or rights-managed manner. For more details, please see the Exclusive Artist Supply Agreement.''

For clarity, this has nothing at all to do with commercial or editorial.
It only has to do with RF. All your RF content has to go to iStock, whether it's editorial or commercial.
You can supply commercial and editorial content RF to iStock, and different commercial and editorial content RM elsewhere.
Not sure how relevant that is to an illustrator, but as I'm not an illustrator, I don't know anything but the world of RM illustrations.

Oh wow I always thought editorial couldn't be RF, we learn every day... Thanks for that ShadySue!

This whole topic sounds like, we're waiting for lottery to begin and to watch it.

Didn't win the lottery, I'll get another ticket next month.

I don't see any content in the OP's post, also February's downloads aren't currently online for me, nor is my Profile page frozen while the update process takes place, nor is there any mention of them being available in their forum, nor in two independent forums I'm on.

Tomorrow is 20.

I can also see number of downloads for February under ESP>my performance>content statistics>downloads>feb 2019
Available on the phone app as well.

twice as many as January, but could end up with less royalties if they all sold for pennies.

Adobe Stock / Re: Change to sales notification email
« on: March 18, 2019, 03:05 »
I think they are well aware of what they're doing, they want us to see the top contributors and our personal top sellers, so we can make more of these...

159
according to that stats site with the bird logo (I forgot the name), I am above the 93 percentile in earnings of all stock contributors. So I make more than 93% of photographers and videographers.

I have 20,000 videos and about 50,000 photos (half online, rest are pending upload).

I make about $35,000 a year from stock.

good luck

twitter?  ;D ;D

More like "Beautiful, free photos. Gifted by the worlds most naive community of photographers."

More like "Beautiful, free photos. Gifted by the worlds most naive community of photographers morons "  ::)

I have to agree with this statement, most of them offer unreleased content with visible brands, logos etc. for commercial use.

161
Title says it all. I'm genuinely interested in figuring out how can I make $150k/year from stock photos/videos?

It's fun to do - now I'd like to figure out how to reach those numbers. Figured I may as well ask in case anyone has some good ideas. Ideas/suggestions?

Perhaps - hypothetically - imagine you personally *were* currently making $150k/year from microstock. What would you have to be doing to acheive that?

Thanks!

Upload to 10 different agencies, and aim for 15K on each agency.

Then diversify by making photo + video + vectors and aim for 5K in each category per website.

Seems doable now  8)

Shutterstock.com / Re: New stuffs don't sell
« on: March 12, 2019, 03:38 »
Sometimes it feels like the SS system is rigged, you only get paid a % of what you contribute to them for as long as you keep contributing and they report these 'sales' to you - more like a system than picks up random images in your port  (if you keep uploading daily or weekly, your sales go up, if you stop uploading for a few weeks or months, your sales go down). Are they actually being audited by an external agency?

Adobe Stock / Re: Editorial Video in Adobe?
« on: March 06, 2019, 11:46 »
+1 both photo and video

164
Currently... 1 EUR = 1.13 USD and 1 EUR = 0.86 GBP

Multiply this by hundreds each month and that's a lot of money.

Which means that they probably pay as much as SS with this dodgy credit system. 30% (maybe 35% for people paid in EUR)

165
Adobe Stock also pays in EUR (if you have the right account) which is a bonus compared to USD commissions.

ok, so 1 USD = 1 EUR in AS ?

Well, I created a "European" account with Fotolia some 9 years ago, where 1 credit = 1 EUR. However if you would have made an "American" account, then 1 credit = 1 USD.
I don't know if this is still the case if you make a fresh AS account, but getting euros instead of dollars is a bonus.

Unfortunately, that still is the case, and people paid in USD or GBP get much less than people paid in EUR for the same sales.

1 credit = 1 USD = 1 EUR = 0.75 GBP = 4 PLN = 7,10 SEK = 150 JPY = 1,100 KRW.

Microstock News / Re: Onepixel stock new agency????Help
« on: February 28, 2019, 14:23 »
Great news! They've just sent an email out, and it seems like they are shutting down as of today... makes you wonder why the rush.

''Hello,

We hope you are well.

Despite our best efforts and investments, we have made the difficult decision to shut down Onepixel on February 28th.

Unfortunately, the Onepixel business model does not allow us to continue providing top tier service and pay fair commissions to our contributors due to the high customer acquisition costs converting long-tail free image users to paid customers.

Every contributor will be paid for every sale regardless of the total amount earned.

Our team will reach out with you in the next few days to arrange payment. Your portfolio and data will be deleted before we close the service, so please take accurate notes of your sales and purchases.

The Onepixel service and platform will close according to the following timeline:

On February 28th:
All customer sales will stop
Contributor uploads will be disabled
From February 28th to March 15th:
Contributors will have access to the contributor.onepixel.com website to review earnings and account details
The Onepixel team will reach out to arrange payment to every contributor
Customers will be able to redownload images they have previously purchased, review their account settings, and payment receipts
On March 15th:
The contributor and customer interface will go offline
We appreciate your trust and support in the early days of this adventure and trust you will have a successful future.

Feel free to get in touch with our contributor support team if you have any questions.

Best regards,

The Onepixel Team''

General Stock Discussion / Re: EyeEm
« on: February 28, 2019, 09:10 »
Every other site I can upload the metadata from the JPG for Eyeem I have to enter each word individually. I can't even copy and paste a block of text. Or have I missed something?

Yes - it's a bit of a drag to fill in the keywords one by one. And they also have AS and Alamy as partners. And AS don't accept duplicates so it's difficult. Do the parteners notice you if they have your images on their sites ..?

Isn't that shooting yourself in the foot if you upload to Alamy and AS as well as Eyeem? If two identical images are accepted, you'll surely get less commission from Eyeem as you'll get the distributor price vs standard royalties on AS and AL.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Colourbox - Unprofessional
« on: February 22, 2019, 14:23 »
People should stay away from CB, they somehow manage to sell 4K videos for less than 1 EUR, which results in a 0.20 cents share. That's really not good for the business.

Newbie Discussion / Re: La Defense Grande Arche used as editorial?
« on: February 21, 2019, 05:36 »
It may be used commercially in cityscapes, and also editorial. No commercial use allowed if that's the primary subject.

Adobe stock:

Same on Getty:

The key word is 'may', each reviewer is going to decide if they want to take the risk or not. So you might get different results on different websites.

Even I am wondering why so much hatred?
They have never shared the royalty price and people are saying its pennystock. How?

They are only including footage sold rarely or not at all, plus they're excluding the 4K size. That makes it all but certain that the prices are lower than the regular prices posted on the site.

The use is limited and they stress that rights granted are fewer than via a regular license. That has to mean a lower price.

They had already started reducing royalties on videos and there is a track record of royalty reductions for photos & illustrations (many started shooting videos because of the drops in photo royalties)

All other - 100% - microstock programs like this where the teaser for the contributor was that reducing the price would result in more business by increasing volume have in practice resulted in lower incomes because existing customers end up paying less instead.

It is true that microstock itself did open up new buyers by offering imagery at prices small businesses could afford, but microstock prices are already very cheap and once that group of new buyers is found and their volume needs are met, you don't get them buying more by dropping prices. They don't produce more newsletters or more websites just because prices decreased a small amount.

The lack of an opt out is a sure sign they know it's a rubbish deal for contributors. When it's a good deal, everyone clamors to be included...

There is over a decade of "history" here in the microstock business. If you've only just started, the sour reactions may seem odd. Once you've been lied to repeatedly by multiple agencies, it just seems savvy.

"These customers will have a very limited license to use the footage clips; clips will be licensed for use on a single platform to produce short-form digital content."

Wonder if they're talking about streaming on a platform, it's clear we'll get only cents.

171
Mat please pay attention to the comments in this thread.

Also, it's a pain in the ass that you need to scroll down (for example until the keywords in the position 30+) to "up" some "relevant" keywords and it makes you go all the way up!!! and you have to scroll down again to "up" another keyword, and so on. I don't know if you understand what I said, but the pain is real

+1, we don't need a pop-up box that comes up when we click on edit keywords, a simple text box (like the one for title) is enough.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Copyspace or Copy space?
« on: February 11, 2019, 03:33 »
It might give you penalties if you start ranking for copy and for space individually (if your image isn't about copy or space)... anyone tested this?

173
Thanks Mat for keeping track of everything. I've got a few more fancy requests for the 'My Portfolio' page, which isn't the priority but would be nice to have.

- could we have the name of the 2 featured collection displayed on / or under the boxes?

- could the banner at the top and the 2 featured collection boxes be much smaller in size so they actually all fit on the landing page? Currently, the banner is half the size of the screen and we can only see the top of the boxes for featured collections, which looks terrible.

- 2 featured collections is quite limited, could we have more of these?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Video Release
« on: February 08, 2019, 05:24 »
I've seen another thread where people take a photo of the talent holding the release and use that on the form. Couldn't remember where it was thou.

Do you guys know if we need a release for someone's back (walking away) or body parts in videos? What's your experience on the major agencies like SS and AS?

Also if there's graffitis on a wall in the background (no art, mainly scribbles), would agencies reject the video for copyright issues? I know they do for photos, but it might be different for videos?

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy which photos sells best?
« on: February 08, 2019, 04:38 »
I was also curious about the "what should I shoot?" list.  There are a few in the list that I can actually get, but wondered if there's much use in putting the effort into it.

I've covered 3 'needs' with series of images (as many different angles as possible), and so far... no sales on these.
I won't bother covering more for the time being.
