Shutterstock.com / Re: Average EPD so far for June
« on: July 01, 2020, 15:10 »
May $0.62
June $0.59

Surprisingly, it didn't fall too much in June. My total revenue only went down about 5% overall, which isn't bad. I had a lot of large SODs to offset the lower subs. I'm making more on ELs and some large OD/SODs because of the commission change.

I don't know if it'll hold up this month. If the ELs and large OD/SODs stop coming in, I'm going to see a bigger decline in July.

Selling Stock Direct / Re: Digital downloads on Etsy
« on: June 29, 2020, 14:28 »
Whether you sell on Esty or not, some sellers are probably still selling your content. That place is a infringement hotbed and the sellers abuse counter-infringement system like crazy. I keep killing the roaches and they come back like every few weeks.

It looks like the earnings of the big players  will not drop that much. They have strong portfolios (should we use stock market term all weather portfolio) and it is also possible that SS is fine tuning search engine to drive more traffic to them, so they would not leave. All of them are now "shocked" and "insulted" and "humiliated" with 10 cent sales, but in reality all they (and all of us, lets face it) only care about overall income, not RPD. Why I think that? Pure logic - 38cents was already so low it could also be called insulting and humiliating. All microstock concept is based on that. So, they won't care is it 10 or 5 or 1 cent as long as the overall income is satisfying. SS will take care that income doesn't drop that drastically, and everything will be the way it used to be. and the small contributors? Who cares about them.

It's a 30-40% drop for level 6 contributors. My original math from before the start day was way off. What SS doing is abhorrent.

54
One of the side effects I've noticed is that I get more for EL and large SODs.

I believe the large SODs were previously $75. Now it's $96. We just need more of these to offset the sub losses.

55
I'm looking at 10 downloads right now and they're all under 20 cents each. It's more than a 50% decrease. It's heartbreaking to look it.

I may keep my portfolio there, but they're not getting another upload from me. What they did is sickening.

Since they're destroying our livelihood, let's take their online reputation down a few notches. I've complied a list of sites where you can file a report against company or leave a review.

I don't recommend using your real account for comments on social media. They may be able to trace it back to you and disable your account. But we shouldn't let up. Let's leave reviews on all these websites and hammer their social media.

Has the game changed from forcing Shutterstock to the negotiating table to damaging their reputation and bussiness and moving on to pastures new. I am all for moving on and hope the buyers follow, but many here would prefer the former choice.  This kind of destruction instead of uniting us puts us in two camps.

If you we nothing, then this earning schedule will become permanent. We obviously don't want them to go under. We want them to survive, but we also want a better share of the revenue.

If we start attacking their reputation online, put pressure on them, there's a chance they may increase the percentages for the entire table. That's what I'm hoping for, but to give up and allow to the get away with it is going hurt everyone in the long run.

Based on the first day sales under the new system, SS just improved their revenue by about 100%.

Tomorrow is going to be brutal since the system will be place for the full day. Even Level 6 contributors are seeing their revenue drop by at least 50% in some cases.

25,000 clips is nearly impossible. There are probably less than 50 contributors that sell that much.

Anyone has info on how this will affect On Demand downloads, as well as ELs?

This is going to be brutal for new contributors. Some people will struggle to reach level 5 (2,500 downloads) and only long-time contributors will be able to reach level 6 (25,000). This kind of structure would benefit contributors who are doing well and punish contributors who are starting out or struggling.

Successful contributors can potentially reach level 5 in a few weeks and reach level 6 in a few months. And extra 5% for the rest of the year would mean successful contributors could earn 1% to 4% extra per year.

For struggling contributors, it's going to cut their earnings by up to around 30%. SS is trying to make extra money off the back of these contributors, which basically make up over 99% of the contributors.

SS is really f'ed up to do something like this.

Shutterstock.com / Re: May sales drop dramatically?
« on: May 10, 2020, 03:59 »
I think a lot of companies are just cutting back and some are canceling microstock subscriptions or reducing budget.

My sales are down 5% to 10%. I would be down more if it wasnt buoyed by Coronavirus-themed content. With companies like Lyft, Uber and AirBnB laying off people and reducing marketing department headcount, theyre also probably cutting budgets.

This will be new normal until the economy rebounds again, but things will probably get worse better it gets better.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Coronavirus ?
« on: April 05, 2020, 22:44 »
No president can stop the Coronavirus. We'd get the same result no matter who is in charge. The US has a system where governors have tremendous power over their states and can overrule the president in many things.

The failure to contain the Coronavirus is on the states as much as it's on the federal level. Doesn't matter though, the results would have been the same. We spend decades outsourcing our production of medical supplies to China. When the world's factory shut down in January and February, every country was struggling to stock up on medical supplies. That's why the European countries are suffering as much as we are.

We simply relied on China too much and now we're paying the price.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Taxes 2020
« on: March 03, 2020, 02:16 »
I sent out my taxes to the accountant. Didn't receive a number of tax documents this year.

Got tired of waiting for 123RF. I also didn't receive my 1099 from Adobe Stock/Fotolia.

I just created a yearly report from my earnings history from both websites. Should be okay.

When did you get receive it? I'm also in California.

Looks like iStock has made the 1099 on available on Feb 6. It's on the ESP portal.

Let's use this thread to keep track of tax-related discussions.

SS was nice enough to provide us with a 1099 for 2019, but I can't say the same about the other sites.

- Shutterstock - Complete
- Adobe stock - Waiting
- iStock/Getty - Compete - Available on ESP portal.
- 123RF - Waiting
- Dreamtime - Waiting

If anyone know how to get a 1099 for the different sites, feel free to share.

The closure of Fotolia has impacted a lot of us.

It's obvious that some FT buyers did not transition over to Adobe Stock and our earnings are lower as a result.

I also notice some slight algorithm changes on changes on Adobe Stock and some of my bestsellers have dropped in the rankings.

It's not a dramatic change, but a 20% drop is still pretty noticeable from my peak. Adobe Stock used to outperform Shutterstock fairly easily. Now, they're comparable.

AKA the CASE Act.

The Copyright Alternative in Small-Claims Enforcement Act of 2019 (the CASE Act) is a proposed United States law that would provide a new means for copyright holders to seek payment for infringed works. It would establish a small-claims-court-like board of three judges within the U.S. Copyright Office to adjudicate copyright infringement cases. Damages would be limited to US$15,000 for each infringed work, and $30,000 total per claim. The measure was introduced into Congress in May 2019, and was passed by the House of Representatives on October 22, 2019.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CASE_Act

I feel like the damages are excessive, but it's going to be an effective tool to go after infringers in the U.S. Those Esty sellers better watch out.

I'm on pace for BME in September. Quite surprising.

They changed something on SS at the beginning of the month and some contributors are seeing the positive effects of it.

Write to [email protected]

I always do that.

I tried this email, hopefully that will be enough. Thanks.

Don't just write an email. Attach a DMCA take down requests. You will find templates all over the internet and you can mold it to fit SS's requirements.

I usually attach a PDF of the request with my letter.

Not sure if something changed, but the last few weekdays have been really good with about 20% more downloads. Maybe SS is tweaking their search algorithm again.

I think this industry is reaching market saturation. There's only so many companies and small business they can sell to. And with technological advances in cell phone cameras in the last few years, just about anyone can take a photo and use it on a website and look semi-professional. There are also those pesky free sites, not to mention pirate sites to contend with.

SS isn't really deteriorating...their growth is. I think this will become the norm from here on out, where it's hard to have the type of growth that we see 10 years ago. Competition is rising, just like every other industry so the only thing we can all do is focus on producing work that has a lot of commercial value and find ways to make it visible to buyers.

Do you have your portfolio somewhere other than SS?

If we can see it, maybe we can identify the reasons why you were removed from SS.
