Photography Equipment / Re: Aerial photos without a drone
« on: December 25, 2019, 08:50 »
Politely asking janitors to let you use top of the buildings, finding someone who will let you use their terrace,  I think I recently seen somewhere someone using a balloon, climbing on a tree if you feel young enough, putting a rope around tall tree branch... Just a couple of ideas.

Last year I was filming something in forest thou and needed a top down shot, well I climbed a tree and used fully extended tripod as in improvised crane, I found out I was not that young and fit anymore but I was amazed by the shot, it looked so "expensive" and people asked if I owned a drone or a crane.

Got the money.
So it must be some IT screwup, not accounting, this time around.

« on: December 18, 2019, 16:53 »
IS was by far the most annoying. not anymore. Now it is probably Alamy. The DT automatic categories helps there a lot.

Odd, I find Alamy a piece of cake. I upload photos, with embedded data, they approve, I select all, if it's a series or set, and hit some stars... done. Anyone who is still trying to please discoverability is driving themselves nuts. Put in what belongs, star some top words for extra weight, and be done.

Not

Least favorite is Getty

Yes, to the point that I've stopped uploading there. When I don't earn that bottle of expensive single malt, every year, for doing nothing, maybe I'll wake up and leave their party.

True, the whole process is dead easy and quick, and the site is quite responsive and bug free compared to AS and SS, the only downside being that clicking the next photo adds to selection without holding CTRL.
And I may add that I had maybe max two rejections in my time with them and reviews are quite fast.

I don't suppose anyone goes to my portfolio checking what's new in it besides me.
I did have a few good uses for it, one being checking what was uploaded and approved so I don't upload it again by accident, especially with splitting photo sessions into multiple upload times, it gets confusing to track what was uploaded and what not. Fresh really helped with that.

I have a Canon 5D IV.  It has dual card slots, and before every photo session, I format both cards.
After last Maternity session, my Sandisk 64Gb failed, but no panic, I just took the CF card and copied all photos to my hard disk.

No problem ... but what if I did NOT have two cards - it would have been quite a panic.
So I thought : let's take the defective card and act as if I really needed to recover the photos.
Mind you, I do not even know if the photos were recorded on this card, because possibly it got defective right after formatting.

I googled on "recovery software", found "Recuva", did a "deep scan" ... and :  nothing!  Though the reviews said it could recover photos even after formatting (so in theory, it should at leastt find the photos of the PREVIOUS photo session).

Interesting note :  this is the very reason why I won't be buying the EOS R or any other great new camera with only 1 slot!

I'm keeping this card, just for testing.  Did any of you ever recover photos with a defective card, without going to a professional recovery company?  If so, which software did the trick?

TBH the last card that got corrupted on me was 64MB noname I bought in Turkey because I filled up the one I got, that was around 2003. I have two slots and I never use backup feature.

OK, I have just simple question - is THIS https://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/awww-cute-cuddly-baby-kitten-spots-stripes-awww-163456824.jpg the quality what is normally approved?

Anyway, why I see grass photos when I am looking for dog?

Is DS to be closed? Lol.

That's a rather nice watercolor painting.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: iPhone 11
« on: November 22, 2019, 19:47 »
But we already have a replacement for dslr, it's called mirrorless. I don't think phones can ever replace cameras for people that are actually into photography, it's just not the same form factor and doesn't have the same usability, sure it can take photos but so can my dashboard camera.

Just to point a few thing:

- Viewfinder, I doubt anyone that shoots with an actually camera ever wants one without a viewfinder.
- Where's the tripod mount on a phone?
- Where are the external buttons? If I want to change a setting on a phone or just simply touch to focus there's always a 50/50 percent chance that I will ctually drop my phone rather than make it focus on a thing I want to focus.
- I don't trust little tiny lens that gets to be thrown around on table surfaces all day long.
- Startup times, of both phone and it's camera app - no way to act quickly.
- Battery life, backup battery.
- Flash? How do I attach or control external flashes?
and many other things.

Sure it will replace dslrs for those D3400+18-55 bunch that just wanted to blur some background for their friends amazement.

BME. New images move and gain traction, compared to SS where it seems I'm mostly uploading in vain and "living" off my ancient bestsellers.

« on: November 15, 2019, 10:36 »
Firstly, are you sure the two photos have absolutely identical exposures, f-stop, shutter speed and ISO? Also identical compositions, FOV and location - I'm sure you didn't use tripod, but at least similar placement.
If the exposures are identical it makes no much sense, since the default camera app also begins it's processing journey with a captured raw file to produce the final jpeg.
Unless the default app is faking details in highlights, they should be present in the raw file in Lightroom too.
There is also a possibility that default app takes multiple exposures behind the curtain and combining them for optimal results.
That's why we don't like phones, too much trickery and relativity.

To be fair, didn't a lot of people here over the years complain about no video sets?

Are they effing kidding the contributor has TO PAY to remove their own images??!?!

What a crock of  sheeite

"If Contributor wishes to remove one or more Images from the Company Website it must notify Company in writing of the images that it requires to be removed and pay to Company the prorated Fee (multiplied by two (2) times the prorated Fee) for each Image that is removed. In the event Contributor requests to remove more than ten (10) Images from the Company Website in any calendar month, Contributor shall pay Company three (3) times the prorated Fee for each additional Image that is removed in that calendar month. "

That might as well be their core business model, trick contributors into submitting and earn when they realize there are no sales and want to part ways.

I guess it's my turn this month, apart from being overall great I also got a 80$ single, probably my biggest sale on SS ever.
On the other hand, Adobe seems to move like snail this month.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: images in a series - good idea?
« on: November 12, 2019, 10:00 »
Quote

The reason I ask is I just discovered that there is a keyword "in a series"

Ιf i may comment, "in a series" maybe can have multiple meanings.
Perhaps it does not mean variations but indicate something like:
Ten shots of ten different houses in a same archietecture building style or block?
Twenty shots of  four models posing one by one, then in couples and then by three in every shot?

Just a guess :)

I think I've seen a popup notification in ESP, those appear occasionally, promoting and explaining the use of "in series" - for shots from one photoshoot.

I used to upload them all a bunch but nowdays I avoid it, logic being that buyers browsing "new" will buy and push only one image they finds best suits them and other ones in series will get buried. Better save them for later, might get more exposure when alone.
That being said, I do get downloads of multiple images from the same series from one buyer but has nothing to do with uploading them as one bunch or not, algorithm detects them as similars and buyer sees that there is "more of the same".

Well, it depends on the type of microstock you're doing. I'm based in Southeastern Europe, mainly shooting editorial and travel.

The demand for southeastern Europe in these fields is actually incredibly low. So, shooting more or less the same topics, I get some significantly different performance.

In average, my RPI for a picture taken in the Balkans is almost three times lower than for a file taken in Germany, and between 5 to 6 times lower than for a Canadian picture. If I check my photos taken in Ukraine, it's even worse: the RPI is half the one of Balkans...

In the end, depending on what you shoot, there may still be a potential for you, even in a developed country, due to the much bigger demand.

the problem is no the rip is cost of life...in balkans you can live and not bad with 1000 dollar..in kiev the cost of life is even lower...in eurpope you need to run a business at least 6 70 k dollar, and at the end you not earn a lot....that's why if you want live a normal life with micro you better move to a country with that cost of life...7k dollar of files per month at this point are not a joke i tell you.

With 1000$ a month from stock you are the king in Serbia, firstly you don't have to deal with half-literate bosses and that's a major life improvement. People manage with 300$ a month, pretty decent, with a lot of pressure but still decent. But you have to have a balkan mentality sort of, so no classy restaurants everyday, no new V6 car, not the latest pro camera gear etc. With that, 1000$ makes your life easy, you get to buy stuff, travel and not worry about life in general all while doing what you love and not double shifts for your greedy boss. Avoid Belgrade, where everything is more expensive for no reason and where you throw you time in a black hole called public transport or looking for parking spot - and you are golden.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Is contract termination now?
« on: October 31, 2019, 08:53 »
Isn't there an option to buy images with a specific license for this exact purpose, to incorporate them as elements in your work that you will commercially sell?
If it wasn't allowed/possible I guess most of the 3D renders including textures wouldn't be allowed on agencies...? I don't imagine many 3D artists produce their own textures.

Some places do grant you license for this exact purpose, and as far as I know, stock libraries are NOT these places. Depending on where the textures came from, they do grant you the license to resell their work as part of your work as anything you want, including stock. So in that instance, you are clear, because their license is clear.

Interesting, for some reason I assumed this was a common thing, given that buyer buys an advanced license, at least on Adobe Stock as it's incorporated into their applications.

As far as I know, and I could be very wrong, the facts are, the license you buy at Adobe Stock is for you to use in either personal or business use (ie advertising). Either of those are fine. Using pieces of other people's stock photos into your own stock photo is against the rules. Anyway someone else earlier already posted the wording in the T&Cs.

Yes it's it's pretty clear, I know the T&C from the contributor side, I just thought (as I don't know how it looks from buyer side) that there might be a more expensive license for this purpose. I guess it only goes in stock circles, can't buy a license from stock to use image as part of another stock image.

Guess it's time to stop uploading textures. (kidding)
