Illustration - General / Re: which sites take eps 10 files?
« on: June 13, 2011, 17:20 »
I think that for Is illustration aren't so important. They prefer photos. I haven't seen so many good illustration there, someone but nothing compared to SS....and they want eps 8 vectors, absurd, I' d understand if they asked for eps 8 and eps 10 too but only eps 8 now, I don't know if they know that we are in 2011...I think that a buyer that want to take some illustration don't make a subscrition on Is, it would be ridiculous. IS is good for people shot, photos but not for illustrations.

Well, I have sold an image for 0,05 dollars and it was "printed on a backup cd" but I don't understand what does it mind. Is it a kind of subscription? Whai can do a buyer with an image on a backup cd?

It's just a backup cd that Shutterstock sends to some clients which opted in.
It's not a different licence, so they can only do what they usually can with an image.

Perfect, now it's very explicit. I have understood. Grazie mille, me lo puoi anche scrivere in italiano compatriota, non sono brava quanto te con l'inglese.
Comunque grazie davvero.

Thanks scukrov, unluckily I'm non english so I don't understand everything as well as in my language. If I have understood well, Shytterstock have bought my image for the backup cd. But thgi cd is only for the subscribers that have just sold this image?
Thanks a lot for your explanation, I've understood...more or less :)) I'm not able to translate this part: "The CDs or other media sold in connection with the CD A Month Program will be backups of Submitted Content previously downloaded by the subscriber purchasing the CD A Month option".

I try with google translator  :)

I'm not an illustrator so forgive me if this is a stupid question

If you take this many hours for one illustration wouldn't it be hard to make fulltime earnings from microstock.

Do illustrations sell more than photos, is there less competition for very detailed works which makes it worth wild ?

I suppose if your able to reuse elements in different images over and over it might be more profitable.

Hi,
many times people ask me if it's convenient spend so many hours to do only one work...I don't know but for me the most important think is to do something that I like, and I like this world  :)
Sometimes I reuse elements in different images so I spend only one or two hour to make a work...but really, I don't think about earning but I try to be proud when I do a work. Maybe it's not a good argument for microstock... ;)...but I think that it's. I don't want make a difference between art and microstock, for me it's the same thing.
Now I'm doing a work since 5 hours...I only hope that it's good  ;)

p.s. Sorry for my english, I hope you  are able to understand my strange language  :)

Hi, I can tell you for sure that, yes, there's a market. SS was the first to understand it but now Dreamstime too. I have doubled my acceptance ratio there. The only one that isn't interesting in this kind of works-artworks (if I can...) is Is...they are so old and obsolete with illustrations (they look for eps8 vectors for example, dinosaurs between vectors) and really they aren't interested in fantasy-surreal illustrations. But I can survive  :D Even if SS was the only one to understand that this kind of illustration have a market I can survive because I sell a lot there  :)
Well, I love ss  :D, but really I think that there's a good reason if they're the most important microstock of the world, they are really open mind and they are able to understand what can sell.

Thank a lot for your opinion about my work  ;)

Incredible month for me, expecially on SS (where I had an image selected for the home page and another one in the "fairy tale" featured lightbox  :)). BME everywhere but on Fotolia I sell in a month half of what I sell on SS in a day...so, it's really frustrating and often I ask to myself if Fotolia is really one of the 4 big...unbelievable  :-\
Better on Dreamstime.

So
Shutterstock (my only great love  :)) : + 178%
Fotolia: + 63%
Dreamstime: +250%

But, just to understand the difference, on fotolia I had 7 downloads, on SS 580  :)
Are you sure that fotolia is one of the 4 big!???

38
Hey Ellerslie, I see one of your castles in the frontpage lightbox (fairy tale theme perhaps) on Shutterstock.  Good job!  Hope it = big $ while it's there!

Hi Pix, I read only now. Yes  ;D :) :), May was a great month on SS, I had an image selected for the home page and the castle in the "fairy tale" gallery....now the home page is changed and I'm trying to detoxify myself, it's not easy  :'( :'( :) :)
I was so honored and, yes, I sold a lot, a lot  ;)

General Stock Discussion / Re: European trip
« on: May 31, 2011, 03:28 »
There are dead tourists almost every day in south america, but maybe you only stick to the safe touristic areas ?

Is that an official statistic or something that just popped up in your head? I spent about 12 months in Latin America - including 3 months in Colombia, 2 in Peru and one in Brazil. Obviously there are dangerous parts of each country, but its no different to anywhere else in the world. Colombia in particular has a high homicide rate, but its mainly related to the drug trade, not tourists who have DSLRs.

If you want a better picture of how and why people die of non-natural causes there's always the US state department website. For example in Brazil (which receives the most visitors of any South American country) they only list 10 US citizens that have died of homicide between Oct 2002 to December 2010 (58 deaths from other non-natural causes such as vehicle accidents, suicide & drowning). Compared to well over 600,000 US tourists each year to Brazil its not a particularly significant number.

Anyhow... sorry for continuing this thread way off topic.

Really, I thought that it was very sad if a Brasilian or a south american read this treadh and read that he can kill someone for few dollars. Terrible. Sometimes would be a nice thing to put themselves in the shoes of others.  ::)

not taking the camera because of possible theft is ABSURD! if we think of that we wouldnt leave home and even went to supermarket or other place, you can get robbed everywhere, it is life guys.. as we know there are many people travelling the world and are safe, it is LIFE!

+1

@ Gost, I belive in your words and when I speak I'm ironic (of course, I don't belive that you think that we live in caves  ;)). I'm really interested in your opinion about my country and about Europe. ...It so fun for me this thread. I think exactly like Luissantos: if we think at worst we don't leave home, in every part of the world  :D ;) :)

I think the greatest danger in southern Europe is bag theft in crowded places rather than from hotels. A few years ago I was in a tourist information office in Nice when a couple of young lads breezed in and, without even breaking stride, grabbed my day-sack from the floor and walked out with it. Fortunately my girlfriend saw them and when I gave chase they quickly dropped it and ran off. They probably weren't in the office for more than 2-3 seconds in total.

A friend was on a business trip and was waiting at Barcelona airport. He had his luggage on a trolley in front of him whilst he viewed the Departures board where a number of flights had been delayed. A bloke tapped him on his left shoulder and started speaking loudly in Spanish whilst gesticuating wildly at the board. When my friend turned towards him to explain he didn't speak Spanish ... someone nipped in from the right and stole his laptop from on top of his luggage. It was a couple of minutes before he realised what had happened by which time the thieves were well away.

Crime usually happens when you least expect it.

Do you really think that in southern europe there is more crime that in USA? When we watch tv everybody tell us about USA crime, you can belive in it or not. I belive only in my experience. I'm 34 years old, italian, and I have never been robben (Oh, really, one time when I was a child, in Sicily ). I went in Spain, Portugal, Greece, France, South Italy (I live in North East) and never, never I had a theft.
So, I think that something bad can happen everywhere if you are unlucky but usually don't happen anything and you see wonderful places...safely.
But...do you know that we don't live in caves?  ;D :D :D :D

p.s UK is a great place too, wonderful country.

I'm italian too and my husband works in an hotel, be sure that there aren't more thieves here than in any other place...I've travelled a lot in Europe and in in South America too...and I can tell that my country is one of the most beautiful country in the world. Two years ago I met an american photographer in my street, he was taking pictures from the roof of his car, so I invited him in my house beacause here there's a better landscape.
Spain is very very beautiful too...expecially Andalusia. I don't love Greece too much.
Well, if you come here you are welcome...without thieves  ;)

Oh My God Pix, I'm so honored and happy. It's mine  :D
In effect when I do my castles (I have done a lot of castles, they are one of my favourite subjects) I think to Neuschwanstein castle, a place that I love because it's  a dream and I'm a dreamer. I'm really happy you like it and excited.
Thanks a lot, you make me happy  :)

46

Elserlie, do you have this castle Shutterstock 72926116 anywhere without the background?  Is this an illustration or a real place?

Hi Pixart, I have this castle tree times on shutterstock (and twice, but I'm not sure, on Fotolia) with different backgrounds, it's an illustration, not a real place.
Why?

This is another version

and I have done a more simple version with only the castle, sky and an hill...

Well, that the process of learning. Don`t get discouraged. Sometimes the same happens to me: spending hours on a piece and I think it?s great and in the end I realize that I just got lost lol. And another time its the opposite :-)
I completely understand that you feel bad with the "poor execution...." the rejection reasons on every agency can feel very insulting. Don`t take it personal. Don`t take rejection reasons too serious. Try to learn and get better. Good luck!

You have understood perfectly what I think and what I feel. I know that I'm too emotional but the day before these 4 (or 5, I don't remember now) rejections I had 5 o 6 approved images so I think that there's something strange. One day they accept everything and the day next nothing?
My friend had a similar problem, he resubmit all the rejected images and...they were accepted.
It is strange, isn't it?
Because in this way is really difficult understand what they are looking for and what they want. I'd like don't be discouraged but I'm...a little bit because I have understood, more or less, what the other stocks want...what is good for fotolia, for SS and for IS too...I think...but I'm not able to make a prediction about what interest to Ds.
May be...one day :DD
You're very nice velocicarpo, I like the people that say what they think ;))

48
Oh, There isn't problem. It's possible that it isn't a good work, I have only spent a lot of time for this...but when I submitted this one I submitted 4 other images all rejected for "poor execution" and it's difficult belive that all wasn't good...Anyway, everything is possible. This one was accepted by fotolia, accepted and sold by Shutterstock butr I know that there isn't an objective standard for every stock...only lucky and personal opinions. Of course I stay and I prefer where my work is appreciated  ;)
Now I'm not so encouraged to upload on DS.

p.s. I haven't problems with rejections but with the reasons...tell me bad light, bad colors ecc. but don't tell poor execution  ; ???

49
Well, some days they reject everything and same days they thake everything. I'm not happy. They rejected this work

For Poor execution. Poor execution!! Tell me you aren't interested in it or something like this but not "poor execution" when I used 22 images to do this work and 7 hours.
I'm angry, I'm thinking to go away from DS and Fotolia and stay only on Shutterstock (I love Shutterstock).

Congratulation! Shutterstock is the best, I love it (and this month one of my work is selected for the home page, great honor for me and...happiness!)  :D
I sold in a day on SS more than Fotolia in seven months (I'm thinking to go away from Fotolia...).
