Alamy.com / Alamy Licensing
« on: July 28, 2016, 10:12 »
Hey Everyone, I have a question about licensing on Alamy, I am seeing a lot of RM licenses for commercial imagery that has logos / trademarks etc, with options to license these images for calendars , merchandise etc. If you do a search on any popular brand (Ferrari Lamborghini etc.) then you'll see what i mean.

Can someone shed some light please as I thought that trademarks / logos / brands etc. were protected by copyright law and could only be sold as editorial. Is it because Alamy assumes no risk for content and contributors are taking a risk by selling these images commercially, or do the terms of an RM license differ from the terms of an RF license where logos and trademarks are concerned

Thanks

Just over $4 for this month from 7 sales, happy I'm no longer exclusive. Using most of my time to upload my port on to other sites. Already got my first sale on SS and FT

I fixed the recaptcha issue by doing the following:

Close SS
delete cookie as suggested above
change PW on Envato site
Launch SS and change Envato creds before recaptcha appears

Thanks for your help... but now I have another issue with Envato. When trying to submit I get an error, I've attached a screenshot

Just got around to testing this, I reset my PW on the main Envato site, updated it in the recaptcha popup, the popup disappears then returns again asking me to enter password

Sometimes Envato bugs out behaving like you're not authorized even right after authorization.
Try removing C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Temp\sscookies\envato.dat while the program is NOT running.

Tried the above, same issue :(

Is anyone else having an issue with their Envato account in the program, the recaptcha won't let me log in, I know my password is correct as when I try to reset it on the main site, it says that I can't use the same password as my current password when entering my current password to save changes :/

What problem do you experience with Envato in program?

I am unable to login with my password when I am prompted. I can log in to the Envato site on the web without an issue

Try setting completely new password on the agency website and in the program settings.

HI,

I downloaded the app for Android last week and paid for a subscription but I don't seem to be getting notifications, would there be any obvious reason why?

I had a sale on DT yesterday and it never showed up in the app, even though my phone has been on WiFi since 10pm yesterday. I aslo has a couple of sales during the week which didn't show up

34
I'd be interested in helping out. I'm about to go multi agency from exclusive so I will have a lot of images to upload to multiple agencies

35
Thanks for the replies both

Wordplanet - How do you differentiate between generic travel and fine art travel in your portfolio, is it a mindset you have when you shoot the images or just something you decide during post processing?

This is where I am not sure how to split my port, I ave some images that I think could be suitable for fine art / Macro, but I'm not sure and wouldn't want them to miss out on earning a few dollars because I've made the wrong judgement and think they are worth more

$20.29 for me, only 9 sales though, my sales numbers have dropped drastically since they made the changes to the way their search results display... Bring on 14th July, no more exclusive!

Newbie Discussion / How to sort portfolio for Micro / Macro
« on: June 30, 2016, 10:25 »
Hi everyone,

I'm just about to enter the world of multi agency and am wondering about this, how do you split and sort your portfolio between micro / macro stock and fine art for prints. Do you upload everything to all types of sites, or do you upload everything to micro and then make a judgement on what you think is then suitable for macro / print...

Thanks for your input

So, can someone tell me whats the difference between time lapse or using a normal video camera and recording the same stuff and then just fast forward it?

Time Lapse is usually a frame taken at a set interval (e.g. 1 every second), then stitched together to make a full motion video. As standard video is 25 / 30 / 60 frames per second depending on the format it takes 30 shots to make one second of footage, so every second is 30 seconds of real life. Mutliply this by 5 minutes and you have 300 seconds to fill, at 30 frames per second that's 9000 frames, so will take 9000 seconds to shoot the images to make that video. There is more to it than that such as what settings to use on your camera to make the motion smoother etc... and the guy in the link above has just gone next level times 100.

I don't know, how it's with DT, but with other agencies, default search is what you choose it to be. For example, if I search photos on SS, and then click on "relevant" tab, the next time, when I will perform search, it will first show "relevant" images

DT defaults to Best Selling (Used to be Most Relevant) every time you open a new web browser session, seems other agencies store your preference in cookies

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens
« on: June 17, 2016, 05:24 »
Not sure how true it is but I have read that the 18-135 IS STM lens is just as sharp. Even though it's not an L lens it has newer optics. A lot of my portfolio on DT is shot with the 18-135 and I can't really fault it. It will be a lot cheaper than the 24-105 you mention

If you're set on the 24-105 though, I'd wait 2-3 months, canon have a announced the 24-105 F4L IS II to be released with the 5D MK4 in August, once that is released the current 24-105 will most likely drop in price

DT admitted that they changed the search to redistribute income to everyone regardless of asset merit.  That is pure C R A P. So all you have to do it submit junk and you too can make money, guaranteed (practically).  More and more contributors I speak with have all but given up on them.

DT actually changed their search results page to display Best Selling first as of May, so not everyone gets an income any more. Mostly it will be the old timers of the site whose images have had the chance to generate sales. Buyers can change the search results to display by most relevant, which was the previous default, but most probably won't.

The way I see it is it's not really worth uploading there anymore unless you have something truly original, otherwise it will just go to the bottom of the pile, never to be seen again. I cancelled my exclusivity and may continue to upload once I have my portfolio up and running on a few other sites, but it is definitely taking a back seat for now.

Thanks Dook.

Shutterstock.com / Shutterstock initial Submission process
« on: June 14, 2016, 06:53 »
I am at the initial stage of submission, where I have to have 1 out of 10 images accepted to become a contributor but I have a question... assuming I get one accepted out of 10 does that image then go on sale or do I need to reupload and submit... I'm asking because I am still under exclusivity with DT until July 14th, but I want to start uploading my port to SS and others before them so they are ready to go live, or at least go to review on 14th

Thanks

Canon T4i with various lenses for me, waiting for the 5d4 to be released so I can upgrade

45
An alternative would be to get the canon EF-s 10-18. As others say you will get the perspective distortion because it is so wide but the lens is a very good lens optically, and cheap compared to the alternatives at around 180. Just bear in mind that if you thinking of upgrading to FF body, that this lens wont be compatible

exclusivity?? wow. can't blame DT for that Move. Why would you do That. Just curious. haven't heard anyone do that in many years.

I'm not blaming DT, they have to do what's best for their business. My reason for going exclusive is that I was a n00b and contributing to stock is just a side project, something I do in my spare time. I signed up to multiple agencies then decided that it was too much hassle to maintain multiple portfolios. DT's exclusive package looked to be the best and I also had my first sale on the site compared to none on the others.
I'll be having a little more time on my hands going forward as I'm returning to college to study full time in August, so I can spend more time uploading and maintaining ports

Happy Bunny - Why not look at a mirrorless system, larger sensor,  interchangeable lenses, not as big as a DSLR depending which lens you use

All These random rejection comments are making me nervous about uploading my portfolio, guess we'll see what happens in a month!

DT has completely died for me also, I just sent in my 30 days notice to cancel exclusivity. I went from 20-40 sales per month, making $20-$30 (part time contributor) to just 10 in the last 30 days, total revenue, $10 approx.

Thanks for the replies everyone, when I first started out with stock I registered with multiple agencies before removing my profile and going exclusive with DT, so I have accounts with most of them, just waiting for my 30 days to be so I can start uploading. In the meantime I am going to go through my portfolio and clean it up in order to avoid too many rejections, I did quite well with acceptance on DT, currently ay 89.5% so I want to keep it up
