Pond5 / Pond 5 sales dried up
« on: January 28, 2014, 20:31 »
I usually get 1-3 sales per week and have for the last year.  I haven't had a sale in almost four weeks.  Anyone notice a similar pattern? Not that P5 is a big money maker but I find it strange.

iStockPhoto.com / Istock Video - HD, NTSC & PAL???
« on: January 26, 2014, 20:15 »
I am in the process of applying for video on Istock.  I currently have about 50 videos on SS and P5 and thought I'd carve out some time to apply for Istock.  And WOW, quite cumbersome.  Anyway, they "infer" that I should be uploading HD video and "if I want" NTSC and PAL formats. I imagine that an HD video is easily converted to most any format and uploading other formats isn't necessary.  But rather than assume, I thought I'd pose this question to those who do upload video to Istock.  Do you just upload one HD and leave it at that?

Aside from that I don't have FTP access so I had to write CR to get approved to upload to be approved.

Thanks in advance for the help.

General - Stock Video / Do you add start and end fades
« on: December 03, 2013, 14:36 »
I was wondering what the general practice is for adding video clip start and ends fades. I have submitted just over 10 videos to SS all of which were accepted, but the thumbnail on some of them are black.......the color of my dissolve. I am wondering if I should just submit them without any fades.

Thoughts?

General - Stock Video / Question around video codec submissions
« on: November 19, 2013, 08:32 »
Hi all,

I am branching out into video and purchased an inexpensive video software (Cyberlink Power Director) for my PC and while it had video jpeg codec, H.264, etc, it was a piece of junk.  You couldn't use the exposure & color correction tools without it making your output slow and choppy.  So rather than cut corners I invested in a new IMac and am now using Final Cut Pro X.  I have been able to figure out how to use it pretty easily, at least for some basic clip prep.  But its codecs are limited.  The standard Apple 422 codec seems to be the generally accepted codec from FCP, but it does have H.264 as well.  I am wondering if there are other people here using FCP and how they render their videos for submission to stock sites.  I know P5 converts your Apple codec into some other "general" H.264 codec, but what is the generally accepted rendering from this system?  Is there a plug-in I should be using or is outputting to Apple 422 the way to go?

Thanks in advance for the help.

iStockPhoto.com / Video Commissions at Istock
« on: November 13, 2013, 08:37 »
I am in the beginning stages of expanding my portfolio to include video.  I have uploaded some test videos to Pond 5 and SS because I didn't have to apply for video approval.  At Istock, however, you have to apply.  So I was reading their terms and non exclusives make 15% to 20%.  What does a video sell for? That seems low (just like photos) and I don't want to spend the time uploading 300-500 meg files to them and learn I get a penny commission kind of thing.  Obviously I am concerned based on IS record of contributors treatment.

Is it worth uploading video to Istock in TODAY'S environment? Please enlighten me.  A lot of my submissions will be underwater and that is way more involved than shooting in a studio, so I don't want to just give my stuff away.

Thanks in advance for the advice. Any other advice that's maybe off this specific topic feel free to PM me if ya wanna help a brotha out ;)

In a couple of months and later this year I will be doing some expensive, remote shoots.  First is a great white shark dive for a week then three weeks on a remote location in Fiji.  I have the beach to myself (well, wife will be there, too).  For Fiji I purchased a special underwater video production tripod where I will be doing some split level photography (half over the water, half under), 1-2 inched all under the water (to get reflection of the surface of the water, like a mirror) and 1-2 inches above the water, among some other things I have planned.  I will be shooting the video through my D600's (I'll also be shooting stills, too) and thought that this might be a good test for me to enter the world of video in microstock.

So, questions:

1. Video in a D600 good enough? And what is the best shooting quality to use so it can be converted to MS requirements?

2. Is software like Microsoft Movie Maker good enough for editing video or do you recommend something different?

I am sure there is a lot more to video submissions but I've been wanting to try it for some time and have some ideas I think won't be "same ol".

Thanks in advance for your help.

I just purchased two Nikon D600's and there is yet (as far as I can tell) no dedicated wireless capability other than their WU-1b connector which uses your smart phone to trigger the release.  Personally I'd prefer a dedicated system that doesn't rely on my phone.  Anyone know of an alternative?

Microstockgroup Buy and Sell / FS Nikon D200 Package
« on: April 06, 2013, 16:05 »
D200 Package
I am selling my D200 camera along with some accessories.  The camera has 48,000 shutter releases with an expected life of 100,000.  Camera functions perfectly and has minor wear and tear.  I am including some additional accessories that will enhance your shooting.  The package comes with a Nikon 18-200 3.5-5.6 VR zoom lens, which is in very good condition and the glass is scratch free.  I am also including a flip tray, which allows the shooter to pivot his camera horizontal to vertical and back without moving the strobe.  This helps prevent harsh side shadows.  Also, I have included a vertical grip which holds two batteries for extra performance duration.   The vertical grip is ergonomically designed for comfortable use.
Additionally, the system comes with two memory cards, the manual and a charger.  This is a READY TO GO system for anyone looking to upgrade to a DSLR for a very reasonable price.
Includes:
(1) D200 Camera
(1) Nikon 18-200 3.5-5.6 VR zoom lens
(1) Vertical Grip
(1) Flip tray with D200 mount (works with or without the vertical grip)

I bought this lens about a year ago and simply never used it much.  It actually was used it once during a women's survival camp as one of the photographers, but never since. It is essentially brand new and spotless.  There isn't a scratch on it as it's been sitting in a padded Pelican case since last year.  Comes with front and back caps, sun shade and pouch as pictured here.

Priced to sell at $1000.  Accept Paypal and personal checks (within USA ONLY).  If paying by personal check, please allow 7 working days for it to clear.  Lens will be shipped after the check clears.  If paying by a money order, I only accept US postal service money orders.  Add $15 for insured, priority mail shipping.

Any over seas sales are welcome but I will only accept Paypal or wire transfers.  Shipping outside of the USA will be determined once I know where the location is.

Contact me through MSG messaging.

Thanks.

General Photography Discussion / First shoot after a year off
« on: April 05, 2013, 13:10 »
Last April I had back surgery from an old wrestling injury.  Since my specialty is underwater photography I was out of the water for a year, unable to add to my more unique portfolio.  I finally went out on a 3-day trip to the northern Channel Islands last weekend.  I have slowly started to edit my images from that trip.  I managed to make 12 dives.  Took the first dive to get re-acclimated to everything, gear and camera.  I had my share of gear problems and camera problems.  As many of you know, field repairs require care and patience.  My housing fogged up when I went into the 51 degree water, which meant that there was moisture in my housing, either by leak or by seawater dropping off my hair.  It took three dives before I used a hair dryer to completely dry the housing and ensure there was dry air (as opposed to moist air) in the housing and any water drops were gone.  I dunk tested the housing with a rope and lowered it into the water (without a camera inside) to finally see that it wasn't leaking and the issue was resolved.  Guess it was a droplette of water from my hair.

Here are a couple of shots I took on the next few dives. These are macro shots with a 60mm macro lens and two external strobes with diffusers. If anyone here is a serious underwater photographer, they will tell you that the systems are fairly large, bulky and complicated. Once you nail a good shot, however, it's very addicting.

I have PicNiche and all of the balances that PicNiche summarizes are accurate except 123RF.  It's reporting $21.90 m,ore than what is summarized on 123.  Anyone else having a reporting problem?

General Stock Discussion / The Perfect Microstock Site
« on: January 19, 2013, 08:18 »
I was thinking about the movie, "What Women Want" while reading some posts about Istock and had a hankering for writing down some thoughts for the perfect Microstock site.  Let's play something called, "What Buyers & Contributors Want".  Perhaps these criteria will be picked up by one of the smaller players to someday fill the shoes of defecting Istock buyers and contributors.....the start of the "PERFECT LIST" for an Istock replacement...the recipe if you will.

WHAT BUYERS WANT
1. Content: This is broadly defined but they want a wide breadth of selection
2. Quality: Not just in terms of technical perfection, but quality in terms of alignment to their needs
3. Pricing: Consistent, fair and no surprises
4. Good licensing options
5. Search accuracy
6. Site Up-time & speed
7. UI simplicity
8. Good communication on CTQ (critical to quality) topics such as planned downtime, special promotions, price change notification with good lead-times

WHAT CONTRIBUTORS WANT

1. Fair commissions
2. Consistent, fair content placement (this is probably a smoking gun)
3. Good communication from admins, especially participation in forum discussions to address issues
4. Easy, flexible payout methods
5. Continued focus on new & growing forms of revenue
6. Licensing that protect photographer
7. Aggressive copyright protection
8. Opt in for any deals outside of the normal course of daily business (another loose definition...but...just saying)
9. Consistent marketing
10. Easy upload (no categories, easy model release attachment [if at all], speed, FTP & web up loader)

Some of these may overlap somewhat, but those are my initial thoughts.  If anyone cares to elaborate please feel free.

General Stock Discussion / Discovery Channel - MS
« on: January 11, 2013, 21:10 »
I was contacted by the Discovery Channel to sell an image, rare, to them for one of their difficult shows. I entered into an agreement today. This was a fun experience but not one in which I haven't experienced previously.  With National Geographic the use of my work was more MS and that was frustrating. Yea, wow, but the work is still in use on their educational site.  But on Jan 27th, at 9pm Central, one of my wildlife images used in MS will be featured on the Discovery Channel special Monster Squid: The Giant is Real. This is the first time EVER that a giant 30-foot squid has been caught on tape. For centuries they have only been found washed up on shore.  Watch the show. I don't know where my image will appear, but I will have film credits.

Dreamstime.com / Thumbnails not working
« on: November 25, 2012, 18:09 »
Has anyone noticed that the upload thumbnails aren't working on Dreamstime? Very frustrating, especially when you have a lot of newly uploaded images that are mixed between models and "widgets".  You better know your image titles as it relates to whether it needs a model release or not.  This has been going on for more than a week.  Anyone here from DT who can comment?

Bigstock.com / Bigstock changed their site layout
« on: November 16, 2012, 16:21 »
I really liked how Bigstock USED to have a Monthly summary of your income on the old site. I can't figure out if that feature is there anymore, doesn't look like it. BS please put back monthly revenue summaries.  Whatever you did its all manual and doesn't remember your settings.

Shutterstock.com / SS DL not updating
« on: September 22, 2012, 19:39 »
Anyone thinking they are getting zero sales on a Saturday? I thought I was until I clicked on the day and a bunch of DL's showed up. I think SS has a bug.

Is anyone else seeing this? The Amount on Istock is not being updated on the PicNiche tool bar for me since they changed their site a couple of days back.

StockFresh / Is anyone seeing 300% gains?
« on: August 19, 2012, 07:32 »
I hope so, but I'm not.  In a forum post from June Peter stated that Stockfresh sales have risen by 300%.  He does say something along the lines of "it's a small overall number", to be fair.

Now, mathematically it's all relative:

$100 a month to $300 a month = 300%
$1,000 a month to $3,000 a month = 300%
$10,000 a month to $30,000 a  month = 300%
$100,000 a month to $300,000 a month = 300%

And so on.....I get all of that.  So if his gross revenue has risen to $300 a month (just to highlight a talking point I'm trying to make) then we wouldn't, as contributors, notice any commission growth.  If it's considerably more, say, $300,000 a month, shouldn't we see commissions start to rise? I haven't seen any commission rise and in fact have seen a drop to a couple of bucks a month from $10 a month.

That being said, is anyone seeing any commission growth? I am somewhat excited about Peter's comments and it makes me want to maybe hold on for a while longer.  There's probably the lions share of SF contributors who don't participate here, but those that do, have you seen any indication of growth over yonder?

Shutterstock.com / 100% rejected on 100 image submission
« on: August 05, 2012, 08:25 »
I thought this was a good indication that something other than a reviewer being the root cause of high rejections at SS.  To not get even one image accepted for someone who shoots these kind of images and has a normally decent acceptance rate (according to her, anyway) says that perhaps they are using something like DT is employing, some technological initial first pass or a bug.  But the weird thing is that she had specific rejection reasons, so would it really be normal for a reviewer to reject 100 of 100 images? I mean, if they were that bad, yea.  But looking at her port, seems like she has a valid point of frustration.

Thoughts?

iStockPhoto.com / Big refunds happening again
« on: July 19, 2012, 07:24 »
http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=345607&page=1

Really unsettling.  Looks like refunds are becoming more rampant.

OP at Istock:

You are not reading that topic incorrectly. Since May 29th of this year I have had 133 files refunded for a total of $1,993.29 worth of royalties removed from my iStock account for either fraud, accidental download, whatever. That's royalties, not actual cost of the files (which would have totaled around $5,700 worth of my artwork). Just yesterday I received 24 "Refund for a Purchase of Your File" emails from iStock totaling $471.30 in refunds for a batch of my files that were downloaded on June 26th. So yeah, typically how this has been playing out is I withdraw what is in my account at the end of the week (as per usual), thinking I have done pretty well for the week. Then I get 20 to 30 emails from iStock the next week, each with various amounts of refunds totaling somewhere around $500, putting my iStock account in the hole somewhere around that amount. By the time I've made up the difference and gotten my account back to $0, BOOM! - another batch of refund notices, putting me right back in the hole. Is there anyone else out there getting refund notices at this rate? I've seen people complaining about handfuls of files being refunded. But nothing like this. I feel like I'm on an island here.

I'm not just jumping into the forums here simply to throw a fit. My first course of action was to email iStock about this. At first they gave me the reasons as to why the files were refunded and explained nicely that there was really nothing they could do about it. Now they just won't respond to my emails at all. So here I am. Just want to see if there are others experiencing this kind of volume of refunds. Surely I am not the only one. All of us here need to know just how bad this problem really is. This isn't just a little problem. This is like a Yoko Ono to the Beatles kind of a problem.
