General Stock Discussion / Re: Bad July sales
« on: July 08, 2011, 19:17 »
Not too bad for me.  I've made just under $200 in week one of July.  That's not too bad for a .38 cent subscription site.  Yea, I got some EL's too....that always helps ;)

Shutterstock doesn't think they have a problem....at least according to their admin forum posts.

This is a tough business. It's almost a situation where contributors need an avenue to quantify for reviewers how well images do elsewhere or the research one conducts to validate image usefulness.  I have had arm wrestling matches with Shutterstock over image usefulness and usually they don't care what you think.  It's go with the flow and shut up or keep complaining but we're not listening.  Like Alex said, the different reviewers with varying experience yield varying results.  That's an opportunity for improvement.  I do like IS acceptance criteria which for the most part is accept anything that meets technical quality standards.  Then leave it up to the buyers to decide.  I've seen lagereek's port and it is fantastic.  I see his frustration because it's probably 10 times more than mine.

Dreamstime.com / Re: DT, is flagging images!!
« on: July 06, 2011, 07:44 »
Are you sure it is a fellow photographer? Could it be a buyer hitting the "report this image" button? Anyone can flag, not only contributors. Do you really think someone would do that for .02 cents? Hitting that button is fast and easy and doesn't require sending a message, which takes time. If the reporter is registered they are automatically awarded the .02 cents, they have no say in if they want it or not and probably don't even know that they are getting a monetary amount as it is not common knowledge unless you read the forums on a regular basis. If the report is bogus, just leave a message, it is reviewed before any changes are made. Not a big deal.

Does anyone get anything for flagging images?

Yea, if you don't do anything about the flag and it reaches the DT review team and they find that your keyword is indeed wrong, the flagger gets .02 cents.  And your image gets locked from you doing any further editing on it.

Not all are photographers.  The last two flags I got (which are totally dumb ass flags) the flagger had no port.  I wonder of they get paid if no change is relevant.  As for being polite when you respond to unfounded flags, fk em.  They weren't polite when they intentionally flagged my images.  I mean, "pen" for a pen?  I say to this person (http://www.dreamstime.com/bobby0315_info) and this loser (http://www.dreamstime.com/bobby0315_info).  Give me a  break.

But why are you so threatened by it? Is it that someone dares to question you? If the flagger is abusing the system then Dreamstime revokes their ability to flag images - if they are right in their flags - which are reviewed by editors - then they are providing a service that makes D-time a better place for buyers. So why are you so hostile when there is no impact on you unless you are spamming? Honestly I do not understand why people take this so personally and why it creates such hostility.

You don't see to get it.  I am not threatened by it at all.  When they flag relevant keywords as irrelevant it wastes my time and theirs.  The flagger is factually abusing the DT system in most cases, and I am asked to respond to that person politely when they are blatantly flagging good keywords.  The tone of your response is that I am the one who should be grateful.  Wrong.

New Sites - General / Re: Beta testers wanted
« on: July 04, 2011, 19:26 »
Yeah, sure. We can't promise that our business will have millions of buyers. Nobody can't. That's why we don't. We'll just work our butt off to improve the chances that it someday will.

When you start new things there's always bunch of innovation and unique things involved. That's why we don't want someone copying things like our logo and business model before we take the wraps off from our own site. That's why we require people to sign beta testing agreement first.

Why we need beta testers? To adjust the site and fix the bugs so that our contributors are happy - so that the upload process is as nice and smooth as it's possible to make. Every artist is different and it's just not enough if we have our cousin checking out the site when he has time.

We actually do have now a handful of beta testers, but we'd still like a few more. If you are interested, just let me know.

Look, I am not trying to bust your balls or anything, just giving you some advice from someone who has taken the time to upload to several failed sites.  I honestly hope it works out.  Is there a marketing budget? Big?  Buzz-saw through the competition? Just asking.

« on: July 04, 2011, 19:02 »
Yeah, excuse me for the secrecy, but we're simply not yet ready to take wraps off the site quite yet. We're re-designing the site's UI and we are just not ready to go live yet. That's why we call it "BETA" at this point.
You are welcome to join the site after our release date 21st as a contributor and you don't have to care anything of that BETA stuff. We pay 50% for our artists from the day one so there's no ladder to climb.

Please be more transparent.  Joan brought up a lot of good points.  Bottom line is that there are a lot of zero sites out there that promise 50% payouts.  Problem is, as I said, 50% of nothing is nothing and you ask us to spend the time uploading and such with "we pay 50%."  All the new sites make this claim.  Nice if you have millions of buyers.  Not so nice if you don't.

Canada has their national day on July 1, so that is another country not at the computers for a long weekend.

Canada? Where's that? ;)

Everyone needs to relax and do a little reading.  123 is doing a bazillionth image upload promotion, so they are getting more than normal submissions.  Once someone wins a that slap chop from Vince it will get back to normal.

I think you need to provide a little more information, not only about the site and the types of images you're hoping to acquire (i.e. if you're selling to the Japanese market, are are images of - for example - a typical US or European Christmas of any interest to you), but any other requirements. Almost all of us already have our images keyworded, but a huge majority will be in English only. Beyond uploading, what will you be asking of beta testers? Is there someone people can read about the upload process? Do you accept illustrations (and if so, in JPEG only or EPS as well)? Do you have information about price, license terms, etc. somewhere for us to read?

There are probably many more questions, but if we don't know much about whether your site might be a useful way to sell our portfolios, I don't know how we could judge whether uploading as a beta tester makes any sense.

What she said. I'm always willing to take a look at something, but I like to read all the details and fine print first.

Yes and 75% of nothing equals, wello.....no need to push that button.

This thread is a case study in how conversational topics deviate.

No, it's a case to never mention religion or politics in a thread about taking pictures of your kids.

Yea they are Dreamstime photographers.   I looked at each of their portfolios.  I know keywords abuse is a little rampant and must be a pain for customers.  I use Acur's keyword page using the top selling shutterstock images.  For similar images I always have to remove 10-20 keywords that have very little to with the image.   But it just rubs me the wrong way for a fellow microstocker to force me to go back to the image to pull a keyword or two so that I can keep my image on Dreamstime.  It makes me want to inspect all of their images to see if I can find some bad keywords....maybe start a keyword war!!!!

Hello folks,

I am off to a 4 week trip to Indonesia in short time. I will be mostly travelling in less famous places and a lot among the local people. That's very nice for photography of course. Next to editorial (I submit in IS) I would like to also make some shots of local people posing actually.

Does anybody have some experience here? How do you approach people and explain them the logic of a model release especially in remote and authentic locations?

Do you also know if we have to make a picture of the ID all the time? Or can they just hold a filled in MR and I photograph the the person holding the MR?

I spent a few weeks there not too long ago and I hired a taxi driver who drove and also was my translator to help with communication.  Have a few bucks ready. They love money.  Most speak English, too. And it depends if you will be in Christian or Muslim regions.  Christian are less superstitous in my opinion.

Any comment is welcome :)

I've recently put about 100 photos there and so far it's deader than an old John Edwards campaign office.

Got a good chuckle from this. Thanks.

Is Tuesday a normal work day or still a holiday?

In the USA we go back to work on Tuesday but as Lisa pointed out many are taking the week off and that is amplified by school being out.

How can I upload other works if I'm not sure if my images are only waiting the review or have been forgotten  >:(
I think that is better delete everything and put all my work on Canstock where the reviewers are very fast (I'm angry , 13 days are a too long time!)

p.s. My nick there is Shamain, I prefer that my works are refused but don't wait 13 days.

Be careful what you wish for. It's not that uncommon and you can't compare agencies review times as apples to apples.  Just send in a request on the site and they will get back to you.  Be patient.

I have about 2800 images there and made $1800 in may.....before my 60%. then I can go dry for eight or ten weeks without a decent sale....

While I don't have any kids....that I know of anyway, ;) I agree with Sean and Lisa. Using your kids to help pad the monthly budget isn't exploitation..  Do you have your kids pull weeds, wash cars, trim your shrubs, do housework? Technically speaking you could hire a maid, a Gardner or take your car to the car wash but many don't.  They save a few bucks by having their kids do it instead....in addition to learning that there are no free rides in life.

Hey guys,

Sorry for the image approval delay lately as we're experiencing a massive increase in submissions.

Our reviewers are working as fast as they can to approve your images.

Therefore, please be patient and bear with us.

Thanks for your understanding.

Notes:

Thank you for the response. I wish more agencies posted openly to questions in msg.
Our reviewers do not practice mass rejection solely to reduce the submissions queue. Every image is rejected for a reason.

Many thanks,
Anglee

i just feel bad for them working over there because they really have no say in the decision process. I wouldnt be proud to be a part of that company if i worked there and knowing how crappy this economy is, i wouldn't walk out of the job unless i had a solid backup plan. Im sure some people will leave and have left which is great for them but they sure as hell didnt leave without finding something better.

There's always been that speculation that Rob Sylvan might have left his post at istock under similar conditions. The timing of his departure and the things going on at istock seemed more than coincidental.

Pure speculation of course, but not an uncommon theory.

But I happen to agree....he left because he was aware of the times to come...just my opinion of course.

No, you cannot.  I have a couple there that are almost three years old and I am not allowed to uncheck it as an exclusive.  It is ghosted.  Nobody from the office would return my requests. Just shady, simple as that.

I see your point.  The check mark does stay grayed out.  But you can disable the exclusive images over a year old if you go into the "edit" area.

It's been 3 years....still ghosted.  I must have screwed up when I selected assignment file.  I will just disable it because it doesn't sell well anyhow

You might be confused, the permanancy relates to the Level of the assignment file -

The file is "awarded" 100 downloads so it will remain at Level 5 forever. It is also automatically made exclusive but this status is retained for one year. After one year, you can set the file as non-exclusive. An assignment image must be kept exclusive for 12 months minimum. During these 12 months you cannot disable it, revert it to a lower level or sell it through other similar sale means. After 12 months it can be deleted.

« on: July 01, 2011, 11:22 »

What does say a lot, it that my earnings from say SS, is going into a 5-figured amount, thanks to the IS mess around with independants.

Do you mean you did nearly 5 figures at SS in June, or is that YTD?

$100.00 ;D

YTD ?  whats that, computer language?  I dont want to give away too much but lets put it this way. In my six years in Micro, I have never seen such a skyrocketting of sales at SS and DT, since almost the very date of IS, throwing independant files right at the back.
Its just too much of coincidence.
Yet! as an independant, Im doing pretty well at IS, might be down about 30% from earlier but still good.

As someone else pointed out, YTD is Year To Date.

I still don't understand what you're saying, aside from SS being up for you.  Still wondering what you meant by "my earnings from say SS, is going into a 5-figured amount."  It sounds like either your year-to-date earnings at SS are approaching $10,000 or that your monthly earnings at SS are approaching $10,000.  Is this what you meant?
