As a test, I randomly downloaded about 10 of your other videos (Drone, Time Lapse, Fire) off Dreamstime and about half of them had frame rate problems.

27
The time lapse you linked to on Dreamstime definitely has frame rate problems and if that's what you uploaded to Shutterstock, then they were correct in rejecting it...Dreamstime should have rejected it also.

I downloaded your Dreamstime timelapse and looked through it frame by frame and there's duplicate frames.

You need to look at your final footage in a video player app that lets you step through it frame by frame is see if there's any duplicate frames. I use a Mac and the default Quicktime Player works fine for that, just use the arrow keys to step through frame by frame. If you see any duplicate frame, they you're screwing something up. I'm not sure what an equivalent app would be on a PC.

You didn't say which app you're using to process your time lapse, but you need to make sure the frame rate of your source matched the frame of your comp or project and that matches the frame rate of your output.

If you're having to do any kind of frame blending or Optical flow, then you're definitely doing something wrong.

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 capping our search results?!
« on: July 01, 2019, 12:46 »
"Through" is not keyworded on that footage.

But I tried searching for several other keywords that should have had that video as a result and wasn't able to find it.

Adobe Stock / Re: Adobe similar content
« on: June 19, 2019, 14:55 »

Wow! Just wow.

How in hell does Adobe allow that???

Each one ends on different words, so I guess it's not considered similar. It's a bit crazy.

Just watched the saved stream. Lots of great info. Thanks!

That is the same reason I make sure I edit all out photos every single night we are traveling. Between my wife and I, we shoot 700 - 1000 photos per day. Before the next day's sun rises, we have checked all of those, chosen the best 10% for the blog, edited them, and have the blog photo blocks ready for text.  (The text sometimes runs a couple days behind, but never more than that). I came back with 700 stock photos from this same 6-country trip.  I am doing title / keyword on those (they have already been edited) at a rate of about 100 per week.

Mind sharing your blog? I would be interested in seeing more of your travels.

I spent the last three months of last year traveling around Asia, shot a ton of footage and photos, but unfortunately not doing as well as you at getting everything processed. I still have a full time job when I'm not traveling, so don't have as much time to precess videos.

General - Stock Video / Re: 4K vs HD
« on: May 09, 2019, 20:26 »

I've been shooting HD stock video with my 3 original Canon 7D cameras, which are really old now, and I know I need to upgrade soon. Also have a great collection of L lenses so don't want to change brand.

I've been waiting for the 7Diii but there's no sign of it yet. (I missed the 7Dii which is now discontinued.)

Can anybody recommend a Canon 4K camera that works well for wildlife? "Dirt cheap" would be nice but not expected.  :)

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

I use a Canon 5D mark IV for a lot of my stock footage, but it's not really a cheap solution. When shooting 4k it has a 2X crop factor, so good if you're shooting wildlife. Or you can shoot HD using the full frame.

That's useful information, which I appreciate very much. I'd like the crop factor for 4K but it seems a shame to have that fine camera and not to be able to shoot 4K at full frame.

Yesterday, I started researching the Canon R and RP mirrorless cameras. Seems clear that mirrorless is the future, but I'm not sure they're what I want. The RP is so much less expensive makes me wonder what the catch is.

The search goes on.

I'm pretty sure the Canon R and RP have the same crop when shooting 4K video as the 5D mk IV. One big problem with the RP for shooing video is that it doesn't use the duel pixel auto focus while shooting 4K video like the 5D and R do. The duel pixel auto focus is the main reason I use my Canon for video over the Panasonic GH5.

I'm not sure I would buy one if I was just shooting video, but I also shoot a lot of photos.

I also have a Panasonic GH5, but lately I've been using the Canon more.

I have a good amount of 4K stock footage, but HD still sells much more. At some point I would guess that 4K will take over, but I don't see that happening for years. The quality difference between HD and 4K is not nearly as large as the difference between SD and HD. I don't hesitate in shooting or uploading HD if I have a reason to.

I personally have had a 75inch 4K TV for over a year, but actually watching 4K on it is really rare. I actually can't say for sure what I've watched on it that was 4K other then looking at some of my 4K stock on it.

It's pretty tough to say how long it takes to start making a living from stock footage, there's just too many factors. It also depends on how much income you consider making a living. If you live someplace cheap, it's much easier to make a living than it is if you live someplace like Los Angeles or another expensive city.

How much you make depends on how many videos you have uploaded and the quality of the videos. If you're uploading crap, then you may never make a living from stock footage, no matter how much you upload. But if you're uploading high-quality footage, you could probably make a living with 5000-10000 videos.

37
I give some of the clips to the models, but I factor that in as part of what I'm paying them.

When I do a casting for a model/actor, I alway say I'm paying a little bit of money plus they'll get some high quality footage for them to use in their reel or social media.

It's pretty easy to zip up some of the finished clips and throw that up on dropbox for them to download.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Pond5 "Good News"!
« on: March 21, 2019, 12:55 »
I really can't see many contributors going exclusive with Pond5 and Pond5 must know that, so really what this is just a way for Pond5 to cut commissions and try to spin it as something positive.

General Stock Discussion / Re: is it worth it to buy drone?
« on: March 05, 2019, 20:36 »
If you're buying it because you think it would be fun, then go for it, but I would not buy one just for stock footage. I have a really wide range of stock footage (6000+ clips online) and out of all of the different types of footage, drone footage is my lowest seller.

Pond5 / Re: Pixelated video previews

I think Pond5 is really compressing it's previews. I've noticed that many of the previews on my videos look really bad.

General Stock Discussion / Re: adobestock keywords?
« on: February 12, 2019, 12:59 »
Adobe stock is definitely the most work and time to submit files. It seems like the submit page could easily be redesigned to work easier and faster. The long vertical list of keywords makes it necessary to do a lot of scrolling, it would be nice to have a a design that doesn't require any scrolling.

General - Stock Video / Re: ProRes or H.264
« on: February 12, 2019, 12:50 »
I stand by the idea that codec doesn't matter, at least not enough to worry about.

If you have the bandwidth and storage, go ProRes.  If you want to be more conservative, go H.264.  All agencies take either for 4K (except iStock - they don't take H.264 unless in a MOV wrapper).  And Videoblocks won't take H.264 for HD at all.

You sales won't be affected in the slightest. If you have the content the buyer wants, they'll never give the codec a second look.

I agree that the codec really doesn't matter much to the buyers. I'm just trying to figure out if there's a codec other than ProRes that is accepted on all the stock sites. Seems like ProRes is still the safest codec to use.

General - Stock Video / ProRes or H.264
« on: February 11, 2019, 13:16 »
Currently I upload all of my footage as ProRes, but I've been thinking about switching to using H.264. Is anyone having any problems with having H.264 footage accepted at any of the stock sites?

How do you prefer to compress you footage?

Thanks,
Forrest

General - Stock Video / Re: Pond5 removing 4k pricing
« on: February 08, 2019, 13:46 »
Just checked and a bunch of my 4K footage was repriced to several different levels. Not happy about Pond 5 changing prices without asking. I changed all of my prices back.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Video Release
« on: February 08, 2019, 13:32 »
I've seen another thread where people take a photo of the talent holding the release and use that on the form. Couldn't remember where it was thou.

Do you guys know if we need a release for someone's back (walking away) or body parts in videos? What's your experience on the major agencies like SS and AS?

Also if there's graffitis on a wall in the background (no art, mainly scribbles), would agencies reject the video for copyright issues? I know they do for photos, but it might be different for videos?

Shutter Stock seems be the most hardcore about requiring releases. But I did just have some videos of close-ups of my hands that I didn't include a release for and they were accepted at all the sites I submit to.

I always take a photo of the talent holding the filled out and signed release. I use that as the talent photo on the release when I submit to the stock sites.

General - Stock Video / Re: Vertical video anyone?
« on: January 31, 2019, 13:26 »
I have a some vertical videos and they have occasionally sold, but it's pretty rare. I would not go out of my way to shoot them, but if you have something that works as a vertical and it's not too much trouble to shoot, maybe try it.

Adobe rejects all vertical videos.

Pond5 / Re: uploads not showing up
« on: January 31, 2019, 13:22 »
I've been having the same problem. Probably about 20% of my uploads don't show up. I just re-upload those and they usually work the second time.

49
I used Premiere to edit my clips and After Effects to color correct and do other stuff to them. My workflow is to import my clips from a shoot into Premiere, add them to a timeline and go through and edit that into the clips I plan to submit for stock. I then select all of the footage in the timeline and convert that into an After Effects project. In After Effects I'll take the comp with all of the footage and use a script that converts each shot into it's own comp. From there I go through each of the comps and do whatever color correction or other things I want to do with the shot. Then render all of the comps out and submit to the different stock footage sites.

Software - General / Re: Video Content Management

I use LR/Transporter. Getting it setup the first time is a little tricky, but once you do, it only takes a few seconds to export a CSV file that's all ready to upload. For my normal batch (I usually upload 40 videos at a time), I export 5 different CSV files in less than 30 seconds.
