General Stock Discussion / Re: Shutterstock insisting different model releases for different shoot dates
« on: April 19, 2018, 12:31 »
I thought that it was pretty standard to require a model release for each shoot.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Anyone film/submit vertical footage?« on: March 05, 2018, 14:19 »
I dislike vertical videos, but both Instagram and Snapchat on phones are based on a vertical interface and use a lot of vertical video.
Because of smart phone, vertical video is here to stay and there's going to be more and more of it. The production/post production company I work for as my day job already has had quite a few vertical video projects. 79
General Stock Discussion / Re: Anyone film/submit vertical footage?« on: February 28, 2018, 13:39 »
I have some vertical footage and gotten the occasional sale. I wouldn't go out of my way to do a vertical shoot, but you can get a few vertical shots while doing a normal shoot, it doesn't hurt.
Not all the companies accept vertical footage. I think Adobe rejects it. 80
Video Equipment / Sofware / Technique / Re: Color grading and basic video edits for stock« on: December 27, 2017, 14:25 »
You might want to check out the Lumetri Plug-in in After Effects. It has a lot of similar controls as Lightroom.

General - Stock Video / Re: iStock - is it still worth the effort??« on: October 26, 2017, 13:22 »Question from a newbie. I dropped iStock exclusivity in July 2016. I still have my footage on iStock, but I haven't uploaded any new footage there since I dropped exclusivity. I regularly get commissions of less than $1 on iStock. I rarely get commissions of less than $20 on any of the other stock footage sites. 82
General - Stock Video / Free Program For Converting Time Lapse?« on: August 28, 2017, 16:01 »
I shoot a low of time lapse and use After Effects for processing the videos. But I have a friend who would like to try time lapse, but doesn't have access to After Effects. Can anyone recommend a free program for converting photo sequences in to video files. Thanks.

General - Stock Video / Re: How many people up-res 1080 video to 4k to sell it?« on: August 10, 2017, 12:28 »1080p is not a 2K resolution so you cannot upscale to 4k without changing the ratio. You can upscale from FHD 1080 to UHD 2160 without changing the ratio. but UHD is not 4k either Like it or not (and accurate or not), 3840x2160 is now considered 4K. 84

I uploaded 3000 really diverse high quality clips to Shutterstock almost exactly a year ago and I average a bit over $1000 each month.
I would guess that even though you have more clips than me, you might not get more sales just because so much of your portfolio is similar looking. Uploading so many similar clips might even hurt your sales because no single clip is going to get many sales and rise up in the search results. 86
General Stock Discussion / Re: Do i need permission to sell photos of national parks like Grand Canyon?« on: July 11, 2017, 12:36 »
If you are shooting for stock, then it is a commercial shoot. But I'm pretty sure the park rules are meant more for larger production shoots where there's going to be a crew or equipment that could inconvenience other park visitors. If it's just one person shooting, I would not worry about it. 87
General - Stock Video / Re: Do you need a license to produce stock video from drone« on: July 07, 2017, 17:49 »
You should probably have the license since you're are using the drone to make (hopefully) money.
I haven't seen any of the stock footage sites requiring that you prove that you have the license. 88
General - Stock Video / Re: new to video, couple questions« on: June 10, 2017, 13:13 »Or just delete after upload as you say. The uploaded file will be a backup for you anyway. I would not count on stock sites to be your backup plan. I iStock does not allow you to download your own files. I'm not sure about orther stock sites. 89
General - Stock Video / Mostly Stock Video Commercial?« on: May 22, 2017, 19:06 »
Anyone have some good examples of higher-end TV commercials that use a lot of stock videos? Preferably with people.
I've been shooting more with models and actors, and thought it would handy to have a couple of good examples of stock footage being used to show people when I'm explaining to them what stock footage is. I know I've seen commercials in the past where I've thought it looked like it was mostly stock, but I can't think of any at the moment. Thanks, Forrest 90
General - Stock Video / Re: Is there any correlation between codec and sales?« on: April 28, 2017, 15:19 »
I really doubt the majority of buyers look at what the codec is. I upload 4K as ProRes and HD at PhotoJPEG.

General - Stock Video / Re: Much interest in interlaced footage?« on: February 15, 2017, 15:59 »
Don't use interlaced.
Are you uploading videos you shot or CG? If it's videos you shot, then they are most likely progressive to start with, so doing anything that adds interlacing would be bad. 92
General Stock Discussion / Re: Is it okay to share the photo shoot with other stock photographers?« on: February 13, 2017, 20:15 »
I don't think it would be it problem, and I have teamed up with other contributors on shoots. But do think it's probably a good idea for each person to try and shoot something different even if you're using the same models and locations.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Prices for 4K and UHD« on: December 20, 2016, 20:25 »
4K is priced the same as HD. That's why I'm not uploading any 4K there.

General - Stock Video / Re: Oasis 'Supersonic' Film« on: November 21, 2016, 19:29 »
I don't think it would be a problem to post on your web site that your footage was used in the Oasis film. It is your work after all.
It's interesting where stock footage ends up being used. My biggest surprise footage sighting was being in the theater watching the movie 'Lucy' and seeing my footage. Also surprised when I saw my footage used in the 'Catch Me If You Can' Broadway musical. It's not on my website, but I did post on Facebook about my footage being used in 'Lucy' and include video of the clip they used. 96
General Stock Discussion / Re: Part of my work« on: October 12, 2016, 13:01 »
Yup.
Just so there's no confusion, you probably want it in writing that the person doing the 3D is "doing work for hire" and that you own the final copyright. It is really no different that any company hiring someone to do work for them, the company owns the work. 97
General Stock Discussion / Re: Editorial footage, can model ask me to take down clips of him?« on: October 05, 2016, 12:23 »
You also might want to ask yourself if they are clips that anyone would want to buy as stock.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Traveling to USA to shoot some stock« on: September 16, 2016, 17:59 »
To be legal, yes, I'm pretty sure you would next a working visa. But I really doubt any photographer visiting the US to shoot stock ever gets a working visa just for that.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Best stock agency to sell high quality videos??« on: September 15, 2016, 20:16 »
There's quite a few people using high end equipment like Reds cameras, Phantom slow motion cameras or even large Octo-copter drones to create regular RF stock footage. It's not the equipment that's going to create higher end footage, it's your creativity and what you do with the equipment you have. If you went to buy some new equipment, that's cool, but I would not expect it to drastically change the quality of your work.
The best thing for most people to increase the quality of their footage would be better lighting. 100
