Alamy.com / Views / Zooms huge drops in April
« on: April 14, 2020, 05:25 »
Perhaps unsurprising, some big drops in views/zooms at Alamy (port = 11,700) when taking into account the 1st until 13th of Feb/March/April. Worrying.

Good indication of what's going on across the sector.

Ive noticed a trend in the past few weeks where many stock agencies are offering steep discounts to buyers with a kind message that they want to help them get through the current Coronavirus / Covid-19 epidemic.

Thats sweet of them, but I wouldnt be surprised if these discounts will come at the expense of contributor earnings (will see in the next months earnings reports). The question I ask myself is: arent contributors also running a self-employed business that may also be struggling / will struggle?

General Stock Discussion / Shutterstock vs Adobe Stock
« on: February 08, 2020, 14:07 »
Evidence indicates that Adobe Stock is emerging as a strong contender to soon overtake Shutterstock as a stock-photography cash-cow for many contributors.

In this exclusive stats-heavy blog post Ill explore potential trends emerging in this rivalry for the coveted first spot in contributors hearts and wallets. This way we can try to draw an accurate picture of what is the reality other than pure speculation.

Would be great to share (within reason, of course) your own experiences, in particular which types of content do better at AS vs SS.

I'll start:

Canstock: Ridiculous rejection reasons + very very very few sales
Colourbox: Very few sales + ridiculous prices for clips (as low as 20cents each)
Canva: Made friends with free-download devils + shady deals with Getty = huge drop in already low earnings for me

Hey all,

I keep thinking how this stock game is no longer viable as a source of full-time income in most developed countries.

Therefore, I've been thinking about the best way to transition to more lucrative private client work. How have many of you gone about this...sure you can create a portfolio page at SquareSpace or Photoshelter but do you also ever link to you existing stock portfolio?

In addition, would you say that the skills learned creating stock concepts helped out in a wider context? I feel that when I started back in 2012, that the agencies were much more strict with technical reviews that it forced me to improve drastically. These days, that's more difficult as we've seen them let in all sorts of junk.

The above concerns me personally since I'm finally picking up some regular client work in real estate, conferences, events, etc but my true interests lie more in travel and breaking news type work of which I receive no commissioned work, so looking for better ways to pitch myself in those areas.

Looking forward to a fruitful discussion.

General Stock Discussion / July 2019 Earnings Reports
« on: August 01, 2019, 09:07 »
Might as well stop adding to the December thread and start a fresh one!

Just published a new brutally honest earnings detailed report...the good, the bad and the turdy...check it out!

I submit to a total of 16 agencies consisting of Microstock, Print on Demand, Rights-Managed book covers and increasingly footage. Here's the link:

https://brutallyhonestmicrostock.com/2019/08/01/july-2019-brutally-honest-earnings-report/

I'm happy to answer any questions you may have. Although it often times it feels like a hamster on a treadmill, I enjoy the journey...in particular improving my footage skills with the goal of picking up more lucrative client work on the side.

How was your July?

I've just published a controversial post highlighting that most of my 9 "Personal / Home usage" license sales on Alamy appear to be misuses by buyers (such as the attached image). I'm not alone and this issue has been highlighted at the Alamy forum for years.

Has it happened to you?

See details within:

Canva / Pixabay & Canva Partnering, "exciting news"
« on: May 18, 2019, 09:03 »
Friend of mine received this email from Pixabay with an "exciting news" of partnering with Canva.

This is surely directly linked to the acquisition by Canva of Pixabay and Pexels:

Further to the fire at Pariss Notre Dame cathedral, I recently had an idea to create a series of apocalyptic scenarios using Photoshop to license as stock.

However, where should one draw the line between bad taste vs profitability? I discuss some of these dilemmas on the following blog post:

https://brutallyhonestmicrostock.com/2019/04/19/creating-apocalyptic-cityscapes-controversial-post/

Do you have any similar situations where you hesitate to upload some images due to negative connotations and potential backlashes?

Look forward to a positive discussion, despite the subject matter not being so positive!

I've just published a guest-post on using the Google Trends tool to identify potentially trending and soon-to-be trending concepts to create content. Link to blog post here:

Teaser: Any technically-excellent content related to "No deal brexit" is sure to a winner imo!

Check out my new guest post at MyStockPhoto.org on "how to earn $500/month with stock photo".

My intention was to be as realistic as possible, using my own port and fellow contributors' as examples since we've been doing this already for a number of years. This is a tough game and increasingly difficult, so those want are starting out now or have just started recently should be aware of the challenges ahead...as well as potential rewards:

Best of luck

Dreamstime.com / Dreamstime Garage Sale
« on: September 10, 2018, 04:52 »
Unusually, for each of the past 4 days I'm getting 10-14 individual subscription (maximum resolution) sales of similar locations.

It's bittersweet since of course it's nice to get sales on this otherwise dying agency, but also feel that someone is having a garage sale on my images in light of their "Royalty-Free Limit Free" policy.

Anybody else experiencing similar?
