For January, I'm at 39.5% acceptance 79/197...whole lot better than 5% back in the summer   ;D

Yes, they have become stricter in the past year.

Gross is highly misleading, I'll stick with net in my pocket on average per sale since 2017.

Our average price for per licence remains remarkably stable and has done since 2017. 2021 had the average licence price in the same bracket as 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020

Certainly not in my case  :-[

Tier 2 benefits in reality = 1 extra cent

Much more travel, a drone and a Nikon Z9...hope that I'm not asking for too much :D

Average RPD in free-fall is my prediction for the next few years... (up to 2021 are my actuals).

With yearly inflation in Europe / North America projected at 5-7% for the foreseeable future, the fall in our earnings will be even steeper.

The year is officially over and its that wonderful time again to publish a comprehensive review of the year that was, while providing a glimpse forward to the new year.

To sum up, its been largely a year of frustration mainly due to a lack of travel but as always, I remain optimistic for next year, particularly when it comes to capturing book covers and drone footage. Lets get started!

Published my December 2021 earnings report, it's a short one as working on a comprehensive year-end review.

If you have the time and inclination better to submit yourself, no doubt. More control and you'll know more about the subject to keyword yourself.

I have no more time/patience for microstock so even for reduced 15% earnings that Wirestock earn, it's well worth it. Their keywording has improved but still has some ways to go.

Lastly, since we're part of a large group, they can quickly rise up the Shutterstock tiers which is a big pro.

The bottom line for all of this, is that we can then decide whether to keep shooting a particular type of subject - or not. Or whether we can try other types of subjects to maximise our income. Then we have choices and thats much more proactive than just looking back and complaining, or feeling downhearted about the whole situation. It may not be the complete solution but it can help.

But just saying I received $100 for my top sale is not enough, in my mind, to make those type of decisions. You could have got next to nothing the rest of the time.
Totally agree Annie. Good points you are making. I left and then came back with a new account (but even my original account was not that old) so I can't help you out, I don't have the powers to do so, unfortunately.

The funny thing is that I came, to this site, in the first place to find the answers to the questions you are asking, actually. I am sure an old guard here is willing to help you out.

Right folks?

Maybe Brasilnut can help you out. He does it all the time with his own sales, likes the numbers and is a diamond member. What do you say Alexandre?

Sure, I'll contribute with my own sales...I have little to no hope in this industry anyways so if people want to copy they can go right ahead (good luck traveling these days).

$105 for this one and I don't think even think I did a great job to correct the barrel distortion

Looks like a 3 year old got hold of a camera and pressed the shutter button multiple times.

I've had images sold within 5 mins of uploading (the breaking news kind)

The next future Yuri! You need to tell us your secrets  :D

Keyword beforehand, shoot, take out laptop, run to nearest cafe and upload...earn!

It's fun but pitiful earnings for the work involved.

The new compensation model allows contributors to receive a true percentage share from each download, rewarding content creators for producing quality work that is fresh, relevant and currently in demand by our customers.

This sums up SS...by the way, the port is full of stolen images.....

Have you reported it to SS or don't they care?

I did...3 years ago.....and they don't care.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Do you guys move every few years?
« on: December 21, 2021, 05:11 »
Do you guys move after you have taken photos all around you or is it in your opinion just a waste of money because there will be another stock photographer living everywhere? I could start taking photos of every flower I see but photos of flowers I took never sold very well.

I move every two or three years for work - no, photography isn't my full-time job, unfortunately. The stock content I capture is incidental to where I end up. Firstly to London then Netherlands, then Italy, then Portugal, then Madrid. Where to next, not sure. It's fun and a good way to get out of my comfort zone, plus apparently it slows the perception of time since I'm always having new experiences.

If you geo-tag all my pics you can probably quite accurately pin-point where I lived/worked as I'm shooting so much locally.  There is so much more to shoot than flowers.

Unsplash goes public and will be listed on the NYSE, alongside Getty and SS, with contributors rejoicing at the "amazing exposure" they're receiving for their work.

Interesting question.

I voted for "It's hard work but if you invest the time and effort, and work smart, and learn, you can earn some money."

My reasoning is that since Microstock has no (practically) barriers to entry it can be a smart/easy way for my friend to earn a "free education" on the basics of a good commercial / editorial stock photo. If any $ is made is just a bonus.

I'd advise my friend to try to quickly discover a niche within micros as the market is already oversaturated with pets, flags, sunsets...unless done extraordinarily. Then try to get out of micros!

I'm glad I got into micro photography but I'm finding myself devoting less and less time to it as I'm going after greener pastures as you all may read on my blog. My next frontier.. a drone.

This guy states that his commercial images sell on average only about 20% higher in value than editorials.

Hope that helps.

For the sake of balance, if you mention 7cent sales I feel I have an obligation to also mention the huge sales that may occur at Alamy. Two of my examples from the 8 months. $250+ gross each x 40% for the net.

For the "sake of balance", you should say the same thing about those 10 cents from SS.  ;)

My average sale at SS this year has been 58cents/download, which isn't great. 2020 was only slightly better at 59cents/download.

2017, 2018 and 2019 were my peaks at an average of 74-72cents/download.

Not looking great for the long-run for average download commissions.

Speaking of risky shots, can't believe I got away with this one...

It has sold a few times but doesn't even come close to justifying the risk!

Photography Equipment / Re: Nikon z7 II for photo and video
« on: December 02, 2021, 05:44 »
I forget to say. At this price range 4000 can dollars

My average Return Per Download for 2021 was 86cents.

Therefore, I'll need just under 4,700 downloads in order to break even.  :o

Having said all that I'm seriously considering investing in a Nikon Z9 but won't use it just for micros.

225
Anyway, with regard to one thing you said: 'as images on Arcangel sell (on average) for 100+ times what they would sell on a Microstock agency' I just worked out my sale in November.  I earned $130 and I tend to receive 10 cents for most of my SS images.  That's 1300 times more on Arcangel  8)

Thanks all for your nice comments.

:D can't argue with that statement!
