cannot remember who did this but a few years back someone did a wack a mole for SS and they treated them like crap instead of rewarding or even thanking them for their efforts!

Perhaps! What is real is the $ now and whatever is in the future is purely hypothetical  What makes me happy is that AS selected images, in my case, which barely sell anyway on all agencies, so even $5 for them to turn into vinegar thereafter is a fortune for me since most are so past their shelf-life / usefulness (see graph below). It's all lip-service to their stakeholders, take no notice of a sudden "sensitivity" about race/ethnicity/gender blahblah....if they cared so much about people they wouldn't have cut our commissions during the middle of a pandemic.

My Nikon D800 from 2013 with the 24-70mm still works great, except for some scratches / mutant dust in the sensor which no amount of cleaning will remove.
Seems risky to invest more than $1k these days on gear due to diminishing returns.

Imagine the other way... I file a complaint, the account is shut down, while it's investigated. Would you like that? Guilty and convicted without any sort of fairness and trial? So the problem is, SS must have too many complaints stacked up and they are slow to complete the due diligence, before they can terminate someones source of income.
What's obvious for us, on the surface, has more complicated, legal implications. And they can't just close an account because of an accusation.
That's not what I meant.
They're saying they may take legal action over false accusations, to discourage people from making them.
Why don't they also take legal action over proven image theft? (to discourage people from doing it)
I found on of my BSs on iS on Flickr with some bloke claiming copyright. When I filled in the form to make a complaint, it said they would send the accusee my email address, which I thought was bizarre (but I sent a potentially throwaway addy). No word back, but there's a blank where the photo was and a note that it's under investigation for copyright infringement. (Maybe linking to my image on Getty scared them, or maybe it's automatic, but was blanked within 24 hrs.) This guy's whole port appears to be 'lifted', some with accreditation, most (that I checked) not.
And now more exciting news, guess what?:
1. They haven't suspended the thief's portfolio, they just deleted the images I listed to them and let the portfolio online, but better than that,
2. They have deleted my original images!!! and the duplicate online. They deserve a premium gold award for this, I can't believe it ! :-(
Any action with lawyer will take years, money, energy, and even if I delete my account, the duplicate portfolio will continue having a good time. Shutterstock is thievesland, a true paradise!

This is why I believe that SS is trying to milk what they can. If they could act to remove your images from the thief's port, then they could have just as easily removed the port. That conscious decision tells me volumes about what SS is now all about.

You meant also in case of older travel photos, photos from cities...
I totally agree, if these photos got uploaded already.
But I stopped uploading photos of travel genre when covid arrived and I hope(!), I will upload these old photos from 2020 soon and that they still have a chance to get sales.

2020 was a strange year and anything captured then probably has value, perhaps not now but in 10-20 years' time as vintage. I can see some of the Covid pics being used in 2030 on the 10-year anniversary and then 20-year anniversary and so on. Even if they not directly related to Covid there may be something special about that particular strange year. I'd still upload them now, they earn nothing from being in the HD and not on offer

I'm betting on travel to return in full swing and as most of my port are made of travel images, hopefully get back to something resembling old normal results.
Brutally honest question Alex: do you think that's still possible, considered the half-life of images? The pandemic impacted travel for one year and a half now.
Of course, travel contributors were also impacted with travel restrictions that made it impossible to shoot new content.
Anyhow, keep up the good work, I love reading your articles.

Wouldn't surprise if SS soon proposes the same scheme and offers to give away our images for $2/lifetime, then it's not so interesting. As for new travel images, there are plenty of opportunities especially away from the big cities. Don't know about you guys/gals but I want to avoid big urban centres at all cost. Not scared to get Covid as already had it and survived relatively pain-free (although best not to be too complacent) but there's too much hassle with keeping up with restrictions which often change from one week to another. However, the main factor for avoiding large population centres is the growing risk of social unrest and rising crime. My gear simply stands out like a sore thumb and not worth the risk for what they're paying these days. Plus the market is already saturated for the main centres (London, Paris, Rome, etc. come to mind) so there's no point anymore unless content is captured extraordinarily. So, perhaps the new travel trend will be for smaller cities/towns...I'll look to explore first in Iberia then elsewhere. Oh and I hope to get a drone soon together with a pilot's license so that should open up some new opportunities. Whether I'll get a ROI, not sure but I'll give it a shot!

Just read your take....but can you explain in what way do you expect the storm to "finally clear"?
It's an understatement to say that 2020 and 2021 have turned out to be eventful years in this industry. Perhaps there will be some consolidation and things will come down a bit at least for a while so we can all catch our breaths. No major "exciting news" announcements, I hope. I'm betting on travel to return in full swing and as most of my port are made of travel images, hopefully get back to something resembling old normal results.
