EmberMike, thank you very much for sharing your input. In my eyes PD domain would have less value to me than the other original vector created, but I find it good to see a point of reference. I don't want to lose the sale, but I do not want to sell too cheap too :). Thanks again I appreciate a lot.

JPSDK thanks for your input, that was the number I had initially in mind, but I think like Muskoka tells, we always drop the prices down too much. Thanks again for sharing your input this will help me put the price for my image today.

Muskoka Imagery, I do like your perspective that if they would have wanted the image this way, they would have contacted and dealt with the agency directly, which they must have done and try to have a bargain. You input was GREATLY VALUABLE to me, I appreciate you stopping by to share it with me. I will set my price today with that in mind. If it's too high they will surely negotiate. Thanks again!

I have been contacted in order to sell one of my image to be used as Key Visual on a logo for a mineral water brand. The product will be exclusively sold in southern Germany.

The agency who wants to license my image wants know the price for the Exclusive rights of the image in the category *Non-alcoolic beverage* in the limited region of Southern Germany.

The image in question is : http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-75845188/stock-vector-roman-centurion-brush-helmet-or-galea-vintage-illustration-old-engraved-illustration-of-a-soldier.html?src=DJXVsZwYDQrjxGOHsq2ECg-1-0

They are aware the image was previously sold microstock and that it originates from a late 1800s book (PD).

Is there anyone qualified to give an accurate price for such a transaction? I do not mind paying a % commission for some professional help to close this transaction as I am not used to individually sell license myself :).

Thanks for the help!

I sell also Public Domain images.... My advice: Don't sell the rights of the image....

Reason:

Despite the fact you have the right to sell the image commercially , the image is in PD and everyone who get the hands on that particular book  can photograph the image and sell it.

In case of PD images you have the right to sell high resolutions copies of the image ( even for commercial use) but you don't have the right to sell all the copyrights as the image would be produced by you.

I agree and know all this, thanks for your concern, however this is not the topic I wanted to discuss in this thread :).

I told the buyer that the image came from a Public Domain book and that it was already licensed to other people who bought RF licenses. They are aware of this and are still willing to pay to have me remove the image from Microstock, give them the source of the image and such. The buyer is well aware of the source of the images and regarding all this he still wishes to buy the image. Who am I to refuse it to them? :)

So the same questions is: Anyone knows how to price an image for this?

128
Legally it would have to be debated in court in the case someone would want to claim exclusive right. It's a pretty complex domain in regards to PD images, and it would have to be judged in court to see if the changes made in comparison to the original image is enough to claim copyright to it.

It all comes down to what changes or how they will integrate the image in the logo. Will try to find out a price for it :)

CanStockPhoto.com / Re: Can Stock can't sell
« on: May 11, 2013, 21:41 »
I do remember a few contributors doing over 250$ / month there (posted here at MSG), not my case :D

I always do 250$ with Canstock, very good earner for me, but I do mostly Illustrations. I have over 6k$ over 2 years with them. So for me cant really talk them down. Fast reviews, not hassle upload and good sales.

General Stock Discussion / Good laugh - CRAP
« on: April 02, 2013, 10:26 »
I was browsing around to see if I wasn't missing any good agencies to submit my portfolio to (we have a list here in Microstock but was looking for personnal experience on any agencies I wasn't submitting to).

I stumbled upon this thread:
http://www.aphotoeditor.com/2008/02/27/stock-photo-agencies/

See at the bottom of the list, we (most of us) are in the category called CRAP. Such a high view of our talents! :)

And they answered my query with:
''Many thanks for your email.
We do not deduct anything from your payment. It costs us money to send you the payment and it costs you money to receive it - that is the way Paypal works unfortunately; they charge a percentage of the money involved in the transaction. It's the same with bank transfers. Moneybookers/Skrill may offer a slightly better deal and you are welcome to change your preferred payment method to Moneybookers.''

Bunch of lies, all agencies cover the Paypal fees for us. I listed them all agencies (From Shutterstock to Deposit, Canstock, Istock, Alamy etc.) stating that no one steals 30 downloads from us to make us cover the fees. Surprising what they want to make us believe!

What a big lies indeed.

After facing them with this and making them understand that they are stealing money away from us compared to ALL other agencies who pays by paypal, they said they will look into it and maybe make some changes. We'll see :)

To add to this thread... I gave the site a try uploading 1/3 of my portfolio. Just made a payout after 4 months or so... I had 108 EUR in balance...

Surprise, I receive a Paypal payment, BUT:
Amount received:      780.08 DKK
Fee amount:      -33.02 DKK
Net amount:      747.06 DKK

SURPRISE!
1- Not paid in EUR, but in DKK... My balance showed 108 EUR, not 780 DKK! I lose on conversion Fee.
2- THEY CHARGE us the PAYPAL FEE for sending us money!!! Our freaking low subscription sale money gets even lower. Didn't know they could do that and steal away our money on fees which they NEVER STATE anywhere in the terms (should they be sued??)

Bad business!

Hi!

Do you guys have any daily or CURRENT MONTH income report? I cannot find on site the current income for the month of December 2012?

Thanks!

136
Thanks for the reply.

I'm sure that I can make good footage with it, my question is about video quality. If it's pixelated, noise or something like that. I currently use a 5D II to shoot footage. I also have a compact Sony WX-10 but the footage has terrible quality, so it's useless for stock.

... you don't have to use the [LARGE] (fisheye) view to film. Using Medium or Narrow view will give you more accurate footage.

I wouldn't stick my 5d Mark III on the top of my vehicle... :)

137
... They have just done the same with video. But then since everyone is singing their praises I am probably missing something here?

DP Have videos? Never saw this?

I am not sure anyone feels like DP is at the top of it's game or that it cannot be improved. We were only mentioning that to my knowledge they are the only agency I saw offering you help in processing your images, which is a nice thought from them (true some agencies don't even ask you to choose categories but...).

Of course the RPI is on the low end and they still have  a lot of room from improvement :).

138
Interesting service to offer, and for free.
I'd be extremely wary of letting anyone else keyword for me. I don't even like some of the keywords that have apparently been added to some of my iS files as they migrate over to Getty.
If they do a good job, that's miraculous and worth lauding.

The images are already keyworded, not sure if anyone every got the images keyworded. In my case still have to choose categories for 1300 pending image still is time saver (or money saver in the case you pay someone to do it). They have yet to process my file but since I took up their offer I will wait and see :)

139
Nice to see this, I love when something positive like this happens in this business, changes from the constant criticism (which is not bad in itself).

I was quite surprised at this offer. I like uploading to them, but they are not the main one I will process first since I have Categories to choose. It's not long for a few hundreds of image, but with large batch it is very time consuming, and I give priority to Shutterstock or Canstock which are more worth it and somewhat less time consuming.

I am very happy with this effort and their help, it encourage me to upload my full portfolio there.

140
This morning I received an email from Depositphotos. I had around 1k vectors from my portfolio that were in the Unfinished section for a while as I didn't have time to choose categories for them.

This is a first for me, having an agency offering an helping hand, anyone else had similar situation or I was just the lucky pick of the day?

I don't see it.  Still says "Under construction".

Actually even better, they say: Under Contruction , they must have typed it fast in their urge not to get sued :)

If thats true, you can buy all your images for 2$ a pop and make a 9$ profit. Wow....

Yeah why would you feel robbed receiving 500% more royalties then you should?

143
Thanks a lot 9lives.

I wasn't able to find the exact match on iStock, but you guys are really better than me to narrow down the search.

Didn't know about this website (imagedirekt.com)

@Lisa Wow this is the kind of feature I was looking for, how did you do to add the image to the search term? (Maybe having the unwatermarked image would help). This is nice!! :)

Thanks again everyone, got the exact match now thanks to your skills!

I was wondering if anyone knew about a service, software or online service that would help you find an image on a a stock website based on a JPG of the file?

If not, would you think it useful?

Right now I have a wedding project in HD. 5-6 years ago I created a DVD Menu template using stock images to build the design. I now have a specific image which I only have as a layer in my PSD. I have no clue where to find that image again. Writing wedding in stock websites ends me up with unlimited search. I tried narrowing down all the result but can't seem to find the right image.

A service like this (image recognition) in my opinion would be great, would save a lot of time spent looking for something.

Here is the image I am looking for, if anyone saw it anywhere, please PM me the link :).

IMAGE (i added watermark to protect the copyrights of the image):

I feel like I am posting a WANTED or LOST poster :)

REWARD will go to the creator of the image in the form of Royalties  ::)

Adobe Stock / Fotolia: Something positive... for Videos!
« on: November 28, 2012, 20:50 »
Fotolia actually did something positive, a first since LONG. They have added the functions to Include or Exclude all our Video portfolio from the subscription program.

The main reason for most video stock artists NOT to submit to Fotolia was they way too cheap return on video Subscription sale. Seems for once they have acted from what contributors required. Sure hope it is one of many change for improvement for that site.

146
On my side, selling mostly (95%) Illustrations on Canstock, they are my second best seller after Shutterstock, which means (for Illustration, and for me) they are doing incredibly well.

I have heard also the same from other Illustrators.

just check to see what the email address is.  It should be... [email protected] if it is a shutterstock employee.

To add to this, mouse over any links or email address in the email. Once over the link, wait and it will show the real address or real link. It's easy to write and adress and point to another one when doing reply.

To me it might make sense if they are in that area and that you are an active and selling contributor at Shutterstock

UPDATE:

After receiving that first non-generic message two days ago, I received and email by the curators telling me all clips have been approved.

I guess contacting them a few times and asking some answer finally paid off.

It is not unusual to wait a few weeks for a review. If you sell stock you have to practice some patience.

Sorry to contradict but a month of review time for most agencies is not common practice.

Pond5 / POND5: Frozen reviews - Update for those interested
« on: November 17, 2012, 15:37 »
I am sure I must not be the only one in this situation. 3 weeks ago I contacted Pond5 to have an update since I had 130 videos pending for review and has been pending for a week.

They replied to me with a generic message telling that Hurricane Sandy and launch of the photo section made review time longer, which is understandable. They say they usually review in 7-10 days time.

Two weeks later (4 weeks after submitting), I contacted them again, and I received a Copy and Paste of the same generic message, word for word. I replied asking them to give me a more detailed answers.

I thought to post the information here and some might be wondering when their videos or photos will get reviewed... If you ask me not anytime soon, don't know how many they usually review per day, but their desks are full:

Hi Patrick,

We've had a significant amount of uploads recently.  With videos alone, there are nearly 15,000 clips awaiting approval (photo submissions are currently at 59,000) .  But I can assure you our Curators are going through everything as quickly and carefully as they can.  Our system is fair and sorts all uploads by order of when artists hit the submit to Curator button for approval, as if you are waiting in line.  If your footages are editorial, we can quickly make the exception to approve time-sensitive material.
To take care of you, we have forwarded your email to our Curatorial team.  Unfortunately, we cannot officially give you a date of when your work will be looked at.  Thank you for being patient. Your clips will be approved shortly.

Cheers,

Belle
Customer Service, Pond5

I liked the last sentence (liked as in funny): Your clips will be approved shortly.
