iStockPhoto.com / Re: 50$ minimum commission per clip?
« on: June 23, 2017, 01:03 »
Well, I was thinking of maybe trying to start and upload my clips the iStock again with the support for 4K,
but this thread probably just saved me a whole lot of time.
If these are the payouts - than i'm out.

Hi all.
For a long time I noticed a steep decline in the level of, how to call it... basic understanding - of video reviewers working on our clips.
And this applies to all agencies.
I had my share of stupid rejections in the past, no debut about it. But it seems to me that the agencies had to recruit many new reviewers to keep up with the huge volume of submissions  - and they just went out and hired totally incompetent people for the job.
Some recent examples:
This clip marked as editorial only in Depositphotos: https://depositphotos.com/156530762/stock-video-slow-motion-shot-of-the.html
A content team member in Fotolia claiming this clip has no commercial value (just days before it turned out to be one of my best sellers):
https://us.fotolia.com/id/131518395
Shutterstock rejecting timelapse shot with slow shutter at night of a huge square with people tiny as ants, due to "missing model release"
And the list goes on...
BTW - the most "liberal" agency for now seems to be VideoBlocks... With review time that is quite long - but way better decision making.

To be honest - after investing sooo much time, money and efforts shooting these clips, uploading, tagging - just to face ridiculous rejections from minimum wage reviewers.... just makes me wanna quit.

Dissolve / Re: Dissolve lowering price on my footage
« on: June 16, 2017, 06:21 »
For me Dissolve is my third best selling agency, not far behind Pond5. I guess my clips fit well with their customer base.

and how would you define their "customer base"?

It's funny (or sad?) how an agency with such low sales allow themselves to behave like this to contributors.
It's obvious that if I took this to any lawyer they would tell me that what matters is the amount they pay me, not the sell price.

And the whole upload limit crap?

I almost don't upload there anymore.

General - Top Sites / My 5 cents on this
« on: May 06, 2017, 09:50 »
1. I shoot mostly Sony FS7 XAVC 4K, but some GoPro, DJI Phantom, and Sony A7sII. I convert all the clips to PhotoJPEG, from the simple reason that this is a format that all agencies approve. I sell to more than 8 different Stock sites, so just re-encoding will take me much more time than the large file upload. (I have 200 mb upload so I'm doing fine)
BTW - lowering the PhotoJPEG quality from 95-100 to 85-90 reduces the file sizes afaik.
2. As for future proofing - that's what I thought. But when 8K comes around (sooner than you might think) - The stock sites wouldn't be able to charge  ~ $500 for a single clip - so I think 4K prices will be downgraded to what HD costs today.
3. Storage space is very cheap these days, if you are serious about stock video - this shouldn't be a consideration.
4. 4K video accounts to a very small part of video sales as of today. At some point more and more clients will be asked by THEIR clients to deliver in 4K. I surely hope we will see a surge in 4K sales, at least for a year or two - until 8K comes and kicks us in the ass.

Dissolve / Dissolve lowering price on my footage
« on: April 20, 2017, 16:01 »
Just got a mail from Dissolve-  that since my clips are solf for $49 on other sites (they obviously point to VB)
they are adjusting the prices on my HD versions to match the same price.

I wrote to them that the $49 price reflects a price for subscribers who pay a monthly fee.
Without that fee the price is the same ($79)

am i missing something or are they wrong??

If you spent time uploading 2200 clips to depositphotos you may want to get a mental health checkup

Hehe... too late for that :)
Well, as I wrote - they are the only agency that tags and submits the clips for me, so i'm not investing too much time except few minutes setting the FTP upload.
I guess I always hope someday the video side of them will  start to pick up.
but again, the chances of that happening seems slim right now.

Well, nearly all my video portfolio is on DP, almost the same as SS and P5. (over 2,200 clips)
No views
No sales
Nothing.

My total earnings there since I started (over a year ago) are less then $500 - not even a bad month in P5 for me.
I want to mention that DP does all the tagging and naming for me, and they pretty much suck at it - maybe this is to blame?

Any video contributors making anything there???

Arbel.

Microstock Services / Re: StockAgent - New Android App
« on: February 22, 2017, 10:38 »
Still having many problems with Pond5 on Android 7...
Every time you update the version it is fixed but a few days after it will not update the sales.
BTW - other app (MicroStockr on PC) gets the stats - so the problem is not with Pond5...

Cheers,
Arbel.

General - Stock Video / The importance of thumbnails
« on: February 18, 2017, 09:17 »
Hi all.
How much time do you invest in picking and setting your video thumbnail?
Has anyone done some comparison on how does the quality and relevance of thumbnails impact sales of videos?
Shutterstock has the most annoying thumbnails system ever, with the post review thumbnail change.

Just wandering how important the thumbnails are at the end of the day...

Video Equipment / Sofware / Technique / camera movement
« on: February 10, 2017, 08:10 »
I invest much time in camera movement in my videos.
Mainly with a slider or Dana dolly,  but sometimes with Steadycam and gimbles.
Do you see any evidence that clips with movement sell better?
Of course the movement has to serve the point of the clip and not vice versa...

I would be happy to hear some insights...

Arbel.

General Stock Discussion / Re: review time on 123rf for footage
« on: February 03, 2017, 14:43 »
I have over 200 clips for over 4 months now.
If I add the total lack of sales coming from this agency - the conclusion is one: save the effort. don't upload there anymore.

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia ranking for video
« on: February 03, 2017, 05:59 »
I only do video, no still images, and I am trying to understand how the ranking in FT/Adobe works.
I understand that to get to silver 1000 sales of video clips are needed, and I believe that the same quantity is needed for still image. Is that correct?
If that is the case it would be quite illogical, since selling the first 1,000 video files may take several years, while with still images is only a matter of weeks.
Same thing about the weekly and all time rankings: are the sales of video clips considered like sales of stills? In other words if someone sells 10 video clips in a week he would get the same position as someone who sells 10 still images? Again, it would be really illogical

I think any kind of stock site ranking, likes, comments, hearts, thumbs is a sort of distracting marketing trash, especially when this doesn't increase your commission or increases it by 2%. The only real ranking is the amount of $$ earned.

I have checked with Fotolia CS and they told me there is no difference in ranking between Photos and videos. I also sell only videos. I did not bother to start arguing with them, they are a bunch of people with no real clue sometimes...
very annoying indeed.
