I miss the global sales map. I guess that's a part of history now.

It's gone?

Oh no, it's still there and they added a +/- so you can zoom in? Still looks terrible and why do I want to zoom in on a useless Blue Dot? Scroll down.

Ah I see the map now. Though mine doesn't show the whole globe. I also get broken thumbnails when I let the cursor hover over the blue spots - probably because I closed my photo port on SS.

It's a pity that this map doesn't show video sales because that's all I sell on SS these days. Also, I'd like to see my sales info on the main page as well instead of having to go to another page to learn about the details of each sale. This main page is now just mostly wasted space.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Mr. Rinder?
« on: March 20, 2023, 09:47 »
I do remember reading about Rinder's musical contribution to the film Enter The Ninja. Also, one of the SS forum members was watching an old movie (can't recall the title) and Rinder's name appeared in the credits for the music.

Adobe Stock / Re: Adobe Rejects
« on: March 20, 2023, 04:50 »
In the past, I found reviews on Adobe Stock to be more harsh. I used to get a fair few rejections but also a fair few accepted images as well. Can't recall if it was close to a 50 / 50 split or not. In more recent times, Ive found the AS reviewers are a lot more generous. Currently, I only have the occasional issue with illustrative editorial images. Some of my images are accepted as IE and some aren't (it seems pretty random.) Most of the photos I submit as IE have similar kinds of subjects with no recognisable people but apparently, some just don't qualify as IE.

It can be anything from $3-4 to $28. My latest sale was $8.59 for a lvl 0 sale of that video.

Ah highly variable. That's good to know there are some decent royalties to be had. I think I will submit my stock videos to DT and see how things go.

181
2 of those sale were at DT with $3,70 each for me.

Oh darn, that's low. But still higher than my last two video sales from AS.

I know I'm getting desperate considering DT for video but times are tough.

Dreamstime.com / What are the usual video royalties on DT?
« on: March 18, 2023, 11:37 »
Just wondering what most people get paid for individual video sales on DT? I tried to find the info on their site but could only find prices for customers. It looks like they offer video subscriptions these days so I guess the royalties would be pretty low. However, I have been getting some low priced video sales on AS lately and a little bit of that on P5. Would DT be any better or the same or worse with regards to video? I hope they're not as bad as SS who give videos away for less than $1.

I had a sub to Wile E. Coyote yesterday Acme, United States

Out of curiosity, did the image happen to be of a road runner?

(My husband Nick has been sick. He woke up one morning with the lefthand side of his face paralysed. It was such a shock - he only recently turned 50yo. But fortunately it wasnt a stroke. He has Bells Palsy.

Annie, I am sorry to hear this. I really hope that this condition is temporary and that he can recover soon.

Thanks sweetie. Very kind of you to reply. Hope everything is ok on KI. No storm damage or flooding. We're ok here, no damage.

Good to hear that you haven't had any storm damage. It's been a crazy year with so much rain. Like an extended winter. No storm damage locally on KI. I only recently discovered a new waterfall here which looked amazing after heavy rain fall. I photographed it the old fashioned way on medium format film with a twin lens reflex.

It's 5% for Australia, I got the info from https://eezycontributors.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360040283911-What-is-the-Withholding-Rate-For-My-Country-

Oh yea definitely confirmed now. I'm puzzled why my previous W-8BEN form says 0.5%. When I updated the new form, it wouldn't let me fill in the section that requires the amount / percentage. That particular area remains blank. Though what I am assuming is that it will be filled in automatically with what was typed into the previous form - 0.5%. And that is not ideal.

Alamy.com / Is Alamy giving our images away for free?
« on: November 19, 2022, 07:36 »
I just logged in to Alamy now and in the Recent Sales within my dashboard, I see one of my images has $0 next to it. Though it's still classified as an RF sale.  So what exactly is going on?

187
Thank you! I had looked on the IRS website but didn't come across that particular page.

It's time for me to fill out the W-8BEN form again. It's been ages since Ive filled one out and Ive forgotten some of the fine details like the amount of tax to be withheld. Australia has a tax treaty with the US so it will only be a very small percentage that will be withheld. Surprisingly, I couldn't find any such information online about the exact amount. Another Australian stock photographer on another forum assured me that it was 5%. Though today, I managed to download an old W-8BEN form that I had previously completed and it says 0.5%. So now I'm not sure whether I should put 0.5% or 5% on the new form. Would anyone here know?

I'm currently uploading two HD videos to SS. According to the status in Stocksubmitter, the clips are submitted and there is the green circle that indicates exactly that. And I have logged into that catcha thing for SS that pops up within Stocksubmitter.

When I log into SS on Google Chrome, there are 0 pending video files. And 0 clips for 'not yet submitted.' In other words, there's no sign of these files on SS.

However, last night, I had no issue submitting a video file to P5 via Stocksubmitter. That clip is pending review within P5.

Woops. I meant to say "subscription sales" in my opening sentence.

Yea the guy is a fool. No matter what anyone else in that thread says, he keeps repeating the same thing over and over again.

Gosh, in it's latest reply, he seems to think that it will be cheaper to send someone out to film something specific. Despite people telling him otherwise. I don't think he can be reasoned with.

192
With the introduction of subscription sales for videos across a number of agencies, contributors are going to see a reduction in the amount of money earned on clip sales. It really is a sad situation with contributors losing more and more income. However, this guy thinks quite the opposite. He opened a thread in an online forum and expressed the view that stock footage is overpriced. He repeats this many times throughout the thread and never changes his tune. Unbelievable.

Adobe Stock / Re: Video Royalties To Drop
« on: March 25, 2022, 19:13 »
With the latest antics on Shutterstock losing content (which I just counted my portfolio and have at least 7 videos vanished) Adobe Stock seldom sell videos and IStock has low commissions, I think Pond5 exclusive is worth a go.

What's this about SS losing content? That's news to me!

194
Where does don't use long titles on Adobe come from?

When I first started contributing to AS, they had some guidelines on their website for new contributors to follow. And that included not having too many words in the title.

However, recently, I saw AS providing an example of an illustrative editorial title and it was quite long. So this contradicts what I read in their guidelines from a few years ago.

However, my personal opinion is that microstock just doesn't earn enough to justify the extra time it would take to create different sets of keywords for the same image for every agencies, even if I fully understood how each of their algoirthms worked. I add my kewords to the metadata and that's it.

agreed.  My only difference, is once in a while i'll add all the recommended other keywords on SS, since they obviously know better than i do about their algorithm

I don't submit photos to SS anymore. But when I did, there were many recommended keywords that were irrelevant and had nothing to do with the image that I was submitting. So yea I would be extra careful about which ones I would choose from the automated suggestions made by SS.

196

I try to be as accurate and relevant as possible with my primary keywords.

Same here. I always choose primary and secondary keywords that are relevant.

Nobody will actually search for secondary keywords alone, but buyers use them to help them to get a better focused search result.

I'm guessing that sometimes buyers will use primary keywords only and other times, they will use a combination of primary and secondary keywords. I have used secondary keywords like 'urban', 'sunny' and 'outdoor' depending on the image.

197
Since no agency is really willing to share with us how exactly their search algorithm works, we can all only speculate.

Generally true. Though unless my memory is playing tricks on me, I thought I recall AS making two recommendations -  avoid using long titles and avoid using too many keywords.

I think too many keywords, of which some are less relevant to the image than others (keywords that are not relevant at all should never be used

Oh yea I only use keywords that are relevant to the image.

However, my personal opinion is that microstock just doesn't earn enough to justify the extra time it would take to create different sets of keywords for the same image for every agencies, even if I fully understood how each of their algoirthms worked. I add my kewords to the metadata and that's it.

Agreed. It's not worth the extra fuss.

General Stock Discussion / Re: 1080 or 4k?
« on: March 25, 2022, 03:16 »
Hmmm...I'm wondering if I should downscale my 4k clips from my GoPro Hero 4 Black down to HD resolution. GoPro cameras do have pretty tiny sensors in general. I'll have to check the bitrate again also and see how that compares to my Panasonic G7 when that shoots 4k.

199
There is a belief that with some stock agencies, there is such a thing as having too many keywords. After a few years of shooting stock, I still don't really know if this is really a thing or not. On DT, there are some contributors who advise against adding too many keywords as supposedly, this can hurt sales. By contrast, on SS, the general philosophy is to add as many keywords as possible. I actually mentioned on the SS forum that folks over on DT were advising against putting in lots of keywords. An SS contributor replied that this was nonsense and urged me not to listen to them. So since then, I have been adding as many keywords as possible with all the agencies that I submit to.

Though now I'm wondering if I'm doing more harm than good with certain agencies.

AS is another agency that, if I recall correctly, warns against adding excessive numbers of keywords. But unfortunately, I can't help myself.

Actually, some time ago, I did a little test on DT. I tried some searches for one or two of my images on there that had a rather large number of keywords. And I had no trouble locating those images in the search results. So I'm guessing that buyers wouldn't have any trouble either.

Adobe Stock / Re: Payout query
« on: November 15, 2021, 20:32 »
Photobomb, thank you for the instructions. Ive just requested a payout now.

Jo Ann, ah that's quite a low minimum payout amount (like P5.) Yea I would have reached $25 a very, very long time ago.
