Thanks! I try my best to figure out what people might need or want, and I try and put a bit of effort into making stuff reasonably scientifically accurate. Not too much, as accurate isn't exactly sexy... but I've seen clips where the Earth is spinning in the wrong direction or the moon looks like it's 1000 miles away from the Earth etc.

Sometimes my ideas of what will sell pay off.... sometimes they don't. I've done some where I've spent a day on a clip and it's never sold. Others where i've spent an hour and it's a best seller. I'll get there!

I know the feeling, in the past I did a lot of images that were composites, and some took many months to complete, but I was working on other ideas at the same time!

Some sold well and some didn`t.
And other ideas that didn`t take too long to complete sometimes sold better.
Just the nature of stock I suppose, you never know!

I love astronomy, so I really admire your work.

What software are you using to create your ideas in?
I always wanted to learn Cinema 5D, but never got round to it, now I spend most of my time working on videos in After Effects.

500 clips, all done this year, uploading to everyone as I go along!

Hello everybody.

I come from Getty video, and I am putting all my portfolio in SS, Pond5 and adobe, I have to think others agencies, but for now this are the 3 ones, because I have 2.500 videos and is a hard work to upload and submit all of them.

So, I have been working this month uploading, I have uploaded around 600 videos in each agency, but the incomes doesnt arrive, just 1 video sold in SS. Is this normal? When do you think the "normal" numbers will start to balance?

If you want to check my port and tell your opinion I will apreciate this :)

Good question.
Something I have been asking myself this year too.
I joined all the main agents at the beginning of the year supplying footage.
Coming from being exclusive to Corbis, supply everyone non exclusively seemed strange to me.

I`ve shot a lot this year, but its been hard work, and worrying if things will materialise. I asked another stock footage contributor a while back how they felt starting out; their reply was that they just had blind faith that things would work out in the end, I`m kind of like that too.

It`s been interesting to see who sells what, and how some agents seemed to have started quicker than others.

I have a thought few times why it takes longer on Pond5, than the others, maybe a lag of a year from submitting, and often wondered why, when other sells clips a month after submitting them.

Not much help when I want things to get up and running, but at least it helps me understand the different markets and to not be too impatient, which it is very hard in this game!

Sure do! Those are my non-exclusive clips. I also have an exclusive account at VideoHive which contains some After Effects templates, which account for a reasonable portion of my income.

On a side note, I like how you wanted to check out my portfolio, in what I can only assume was some kind of attempt to invalidate my argument based on whether I do or do not manage to live only selling microstock... when whether I do or don't manage to live only selling microstock was never part of my argument. Classy move!

In my eyes all of your handful of clips are winners, and that`s what counts :)
As mentioned before, it`s quality that counts.

Too many people still seem to think, 10 00 images online and they will be alright as far as sales go, 10 000 of what? I always think.
10 000 images of ducks on a pond or 10 000 lifestyle / people images for instance?

My philosophy has always been to take images that say something, not of something...

I look back 10 years ago and I was earning a good living from 300 images!
How times have changed!

I've also sold 13 videos this month and I only joined mid July! Which has amazed me too.
Not looking forward to the prices.
I wish I had this much activity elsewhere!

106
Thanks I`ll try it.

Had a quick check, a lot coming up on page 1 or 2, but I thing I may also need to revise some of my keywording too.

Thanks for the advice.

107
Thanks I`ll try it.

108
That`s nice to know! :(

I joined Pond5 at the start of the year.
Worked really hard, now got 300 clips, but only had one sale so far.
Not a lot of clips I know, but I`m proud of them, I know I need more though, but it`s hard work until I start to see returns.
Wondering and worrying how long it takes for everything to start to snowball?
Had more sales on Ss, although low prices of course.
I joined iStock last month and had 12 sales already. Yes I know prices will be lower, but at least they've started to sell. Just need to get P5 to start selling 12 a month. I like the 50 50 commissions there and decent prices.

Did I read somewhere that sales usual take off a year after they've been submitted there?

What were other peoples experiences when they were starting out on P5?
(If they can remember that far back!)

Sitting in front of a pictures editors desk as they inspect your 6x7 transparencies for sharpness with a loupe on their lightbox.
Minimum submission to join an agency was 250 - 500 images.
Trying to get 10 images into the annual catalogue.
90% of your income would then come from those images, but you`d earn more from those 10 images than 1000`s now online in microstock.
Missing the deadline by a couple of weeks for a certain category!
Posting transparencies to another country.
Sales reports arriving by post and you had no idea how much you would get until it arrived.
Minimum payout was $250. But you would cover that with one sale.
Shooting stock full time with only a few 100 images on file.
Seeing your image on a post card, while on a trip in a foreign country shooting stock.
Sales reports that read....

Those were the good old days!

It is reversed with video.... we never sold any new video. Always older files sell. Whatever we upload today, if we get lucky it could get a sale in 6 months, but almost for sure after a year.

Interesting.
I`ve something similar before about video, in that most video clips sell a year after they`ve been uploaded onwards.
Don`t know how true this is, I know things are more long term with video.

I started contributing to Pond5 and and everyone else at the start of the year, P5 still yet to take off and wondering if this is the reason why?...

Did you knock the tripod at the beginning?
Look at the SS video homepage, that`s what you need to aspire to.

From the title, I was sure this thread was going to be about an airport security guard trying to confiscate your camera.

Set camera to manual during the day and use RAW to avoid flicker.

As for the airport ones, where would they be used? That`s I`m always thinking when I upload anything?

That`s what I like about video, the bar is much higher than stills, video is still early days for me, but it`s a lot harder for anyone to just start doing good footage overnight, with the glutton of stills images being uploaded everywhere, I`ve given up on stills. But for video, less competition, I think with video, clients are less likely to use poor videos. I like to look at the front page of the SS video page, for example,  and think that`s what I need to be aiming for, quality wise.

I think the new uploader might still be in beta, but there's a form you can fill in to give you access. I'll try and find it. From one of the most difficult uploading processes, it's now pretty good. Upload multiple files simultaneously, auto generation of all your previews, upload directly from Dropbox etc. The first two are pretty standard, the Dropbox option is a nice addition.

Here you go... https://envato.formstack.com/forms/new_vh_upload_page

That`s great!
Thank you.
Fingers crossed.
Will let you know how I get on.
I certainly think this will be more straight forward.
Enough to think about as it is making my first initial submissions, and used to different layouts, but it was making things even more frustrating as my submissions were being rejected because of the preview file and I had no idea what the problem was!

Well the first video in that link is making the author $12K a month, so that's what I was referring to. And as that's just one of the 28 items he sells on VideoHive, yes, I do know somebody that is making more than $12K a month on VideoHive!

That`s amazing, just goes to show how big the market is.

Just needs to be 960x540, render using the H.264 option in the format dropdown so you get a .MP4 file, and make sure you've added the VideoHive watermark. However, if it's footage rather than motion graphics, you should be able to use the new uploader... no need for preview images, previews and thumbnails, it does it all for you.

Thank you, I will look at using these settings.
Forgive my ignorance but how do you upload footage using the new uploader?
When I go to upload footage, everything looks exactly the same, I cannot see anywhere where it might be simplified?
I hope I can use it, it certainly looks a more complicated process than others.

Here you go...

https://videohive.net/category/after-effects-project-files?utf8=%E2%9C%93&referrer=search&view=grid&sort=sales&date=this-year

Just whip one of those bad boys up and you could be making $12K a month!

I love just looking at all of these, I think I could use them all!

I`ve been trying to submit footage to Videohive for a while now.
And my submissions keep getting rejected because there is a problem with my preview file, and yet I`m sure I am doing everything correctly and the file formats are correct, rendering preview clips in Adobe Media Encoder.

Is there anywhere I can check for reference to use for the setting in Media Encoder or After Effects for exporting a preview file?
I`ve looked on the Videohive submissions guidelines but haven`t found anything there.

Also not sure how to submit an HD and 4K file at the same time?

I`m at a loss as to what to do and I`m sure SpaceStockFootage you are the one to ask!?

Interesting reading, and good to see you have a had a good start.
Gives hope, to people just beginning now to submit footage.
Good varied work too.

I too started submitting footage to all the main sites from the beginning of the year.
Pond5, Shutterstock, Videoblocks, Pixta and ME.
It`s been a lot of hard work, got about 150 clips finished and being ingested from the different sites.
I`ve had a couple of sales from Shutterstock, one sale from Pond5, non from VB.
Keep trying Videohive, but my video previews keep being rejected!
Starting to sweat a bit that things so far have been a bit slow.
I know it all takes time for you work to bubble up in searches, and that I need more clips online but I`ve invested a lot of time and effort so far and hoping soon to start seeing some returns on my work so far.
Must start using stock submitter!

Stock has been the only thing I`ve known for 20 years.
I`ve gone from from earning a good living from one agent, to now submitting across many sites non exclusively, which I wish I`d done years ago!
The industry has changed massively in that time.

I`m proud of my work so far and know it`s sellable, but wonder if I`m just a bit too late to the party.
Even if I had 1000 clips online with P5, would my work be seen as much as those that have been there longer?
How do you know when it`s time to stop pouring money and effort into something that might not pay off?
Keep wondering if I should wait a couple of months to just to see how things do before continuing.
(Although, I can`t really stop, I love doing this too much!)
