iStockPhoto.com / Clustered search results on IS
« on: March 13, 2011, 20:30 »
When I carry out my customary - not too frequent - search for my best seller that are not buried in a million other pictures i get a good sense of how the latest incarnation of IS search is working. Too my shock I realized that I can no longer understand the logic of the I  standard search. All my pictures that respond to the particular search term  are CLUSTERED together regardless of number of DL (from 10, 100 or 500). what (Why the f**k) are my pictures are not spread over several pages according to their unique search rank. Other contributors are clustered as well. This search arrangement SUX THE BIG TIME if you are not the one lucky contributor that is featured at the beginning of the search. Anybody else seeing this clustering. Hate it Hate it Hate it. Did I mention that I am without DL since Thursday when normally I get 7-10 DL per day. I wonder if it is another way to punish outspoken contributors.

Dreamstime.com / DT nosediving in search engine referal
« on: September 15, 2010, 10:26 »
The percentage of visits to istockphoto.com that came from a search engine:

In my effort to see what has happened at other sites I compared the big 4 at ALEXA and something is horribly wrong with DT. Their traffic stats are nosediving since July of this year and their search engine referal seems to be the culprit.

Anybody knows what is going on?

iStockPhoto.com / Economic Coercion by IS
« on: September 11, 2010, 07:41 »
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coercion#Economic

Read the definition of economic coercion and tell me that it is NOT exactly what is/getty are doing with us. Exploitation of a monopolistic situation.

Please select your top 2 choices.
Perhaps we can start a grass root movement for changing this misnomer.
When RF was born it was competing with rights managed (RM) content which required the payment of royalties. ("Royalty" by its definition is a payment for use). So technically a single fee can never be a "Royalty" if perpetual use is allowed. So the problem was keeping Royalty in the name "Royalty free".

Just my 0.02 pesos.

Just check out the quality of editorial contents that is being used on one of Germany's most popular news websites. The sensor spots are a disgrace for any professional photographer. Unbelievable. It's not that the motive is in the middle of a desert with dust unavoidable - its NY with the ability to buy any sensor cleaning solution a couple of blocks away.

iStockPhoto.com / IS pictures online at Photos.com?
« on: June 20, 2009, 08:48 »
Anybody have an idea when the enabled IS pictures become searchable on photos.com? And on a related note. What is the difference between "Photos.com" and "Photos.com Plus" besides that the Plus has more pictures/

Thanks

If I am an exclusive IS photographer - am I automatically an exclusive videographer as well? There is a link on my homepage to apply for videographer exclusivity - so I am assuming that I am not exclusive yet. Right?

Canon / 5D II "Life view" freezing up??
« on: December 23, 2008, 21:22 »
To anybody who has actually put the 5D II through their paces I have the following question. Who has observed a freezing of the "live view" while trying to cycle through the "INFO" setting button? I have started to exclusively use the back LCD for framing, focus and exposure estimation (life Histogram). If I leave life view unattended for a short while (no exact figure??) the life picture freezes and no button can wake up the camera. Even switching the power switch OFF leaves the frozen life picture on the LCD. Only when I remove the battery does the camera shut down and start up fine when I switch it back on. i love the camera but I am afraid I need to return it for a new one. Bummer.

I used the 5DII to create the application videos for IS. Mp4 H.264 and all the shebang, but it is being rejected for not adhering to the 1080 pixel height limit and of course I tried 1080p and 720p submissions. I am so frustrated. Which programs are you guys using to generate your application files after they re-opened the application process. Any help welcome.

Thanks

iStockPhoto.com / Dollar bin exit strategy
« on: November 26, 2008, 15:50 »
In order to trim my IS folio I decided to move 10 pictures that were older than 1 year with 0 DL to the dollar bin. Apparently they will be deactivated 4 weeks after the last DL (Tick Tock Tick Tock ....). Just in case they do garner some interest, can they be returned to my regular portfolio?

Anybody has that happen? Timeline experience. Should I add to my description clarifying that similar photos are already in their database?

Thanks

iStockPhoto.com / New Best Match......... UP
« on: June 13, 2008, 16:15 »
Best Match at IS has changed again. My best seller that was on page 1 for 1 keyword is on page 7 now. Are you ...... kidding me. NO DLs today.  What a bunch of ........ I think it severely favors new uploads. Just looking at my own portfolio, the order has turned quite dramatically. DL/Month seems to have been DE-emphasized.

Is it me or everybody.

Thanks

PS. edited for language

iStockPhoto.com / IS lightboxes strategies
« on: June 12, 2008, 08:21 »
What is/should be your/our strategy for the IS lightboxes if you have more than 5 pictures to choose?

A) Add your bestsellers to give them additional exposure and making it a valuable lightbox by improving overall quality - do not worry about other contributors "dogs"*.

B) Add only your lagging pictures - in the hope they might benefit from being in the same lightbox with other bestsellers.

C) Add 2-3 bestsellers and a couple of pictures that you think should be bestsellers but need additional exposure.

D) I wish I had enough pictures to choose from;)

My personal strategy is to add the best I have to make it a good lightbox benefiting everybody (A). The idea is that MSG lightboxes develop a reputation for being good resources for buyers. Perhaps (C) is not bad either. (D) go challenge yourself to add some awesome new pics.

* I've got plenty of "dogs" too, so take it easy will ya.

IF YOU WANT TO REMOVE COMPLETE CONTENT FROM DT

I HATE DT. Now that this is out of the way here are the facts. I disabled all my files with them after waiting the required 6 month waiting period. Their FAQ states

" You can disable all files uploaded more than six months ago at any time."

Since other sites were slow to close my accounts and I am some time away from my next payout I enabled my bestsellers at DT in the mean time. Turns out the fine print in the DT contributor agreement has this little tidbit.

" Images that were disabled and then enabled again will be counted as new submissions, no matter of their original upload date "

*. I know I should have read the whole  thing but it is burried on page 11 (after 6500 words). And I had not heard of this passus before.

Anybody has any input in regards towards contacting sombody other than the official channel because I have not gotten a response in 3 days.

This suxs.

iStockPhoto.com / Speed of exclusivity decision
« on: May 19, 2008, 14:07 »
I inactivated or removed if inactivation was not possible all RF content from various sites and applied for exclusivity with IS. Anybody has any idea about the timeframe for "FINAL ANSWER".

Thanks

Has anybody else noticed a marked increase of 1st DLs of older pictures (>6month)

I am just happy that these fogotten gems ;) are finally seeing the light of day for the first time.

Any ideas why? New and more diverse group of buyers that are less interested in 100% prototypical microstock - which is underrepresented in my portfolio (no headset girl).

iStockPhoto.com / Acceptance rate and exclusivity
« on: February 19, 2008, 11:05 »
Does anybody out here have an indication on how important the acceptance rate is for the application to IS exclusivity. Their FAQ quotes a minimum of 50% for inclusion into their exclusive domain? Mine is significantly lower at 32% using a Rebel XT as my workhorse. Now that I have a used 5D I am hoping for a better rate. However I am taking a number of extreme pictures under very unfavourable lighting conditions (low light, mixed light, high contrast etc.), which of course will give any camera fits and introduce artifacts even when carefully working in PS. Anybody with an acceptance rate below 50% that became exclusive with IS?

General Stock Discussion / Micro/macro and 5D
« on: January 21, 2008, 15:18 »
As a proud new owner of a used but not abused 5D and the realization that perhaps my style is more suitable towards editorial contents I am leaning towards heavily expanding my macrostock presence ala alamy. BTW my most consistent pictures on SS are my editorial images. The question is now, should I focus my microstock efforts in the Royalty Free domain exclusively on IS (>50% of my RF income) and push all editorial contents and more unique images to the rights managed/licenced choice at Alamy OR remain with SS and all other MS sites and feed Alamy with RF amd RM images but forgo exclusivity with IS. I am presuming that RF at Alamy is still incompatible with exclusivity at IS right?

Thanks for your input.

iStockPhoto.com / Only small and xsmall DLs today
« on: January 10, 2008, 23:07 »
I hope this is not a sign for things to come on IS. Somebody just pointed out that Designers are beeing screwed right now on IS and I do not hope this is their reaction - only DL the smallest size they need :'(

iStockPhoto.com / Neglected images DLed more often?
« on: December 11, 2007, 17:39 »
Has anybody noticed that more of their neglected images (<5 DL) are beeing "discovered" by the buying customer of IS?
Could that be a counter-response by IS to the gaming tactics by certain individuals?
Or could it be because of the planned price hike in Jan/08?

Your guess is as good as mine!

Photo Critique / Gamma help
« on: December 04, 2007, 17:51 »
Just bought a new computer system with new 24in monitor for 1980x1200 pixel real estate.
When I looked at somebodies folio on IS it seemd that most of the pictures are rather bright on my new monitor. Mind you I did the color correction and are able to distinguish
5,5,5 (2% over Black) from 0,0,0 (0% true black) and at the same time 252,252,252 (99% white) from true white (255,255,255).
Could somebody look at the same pictures here:
http://www.istockphoto.com/file_search.php?action=file&userID=836613
and tell me if they think the pictures appear with good gamma on their monitor or are they washed out. Thanks guys this would be greatly appreciated, because I am wondering if I prepared most of my pictures with the WRONG color correction.

If you could include OS (windows/Mac/Linus) that would greatly help. I just read that for best web display gamma of 2.2-2.5 is appropriate??? Any thoughts.

Thanks alot

PS. It does not matter if I like my pictures: you and the reviewers have to like them.

iStockPhoto.com / Software for video submissions ...
« on: October 29, 2007, 14:29 »
What are the most reasonably priced software solutions for submitting videos to IS? What are the experiences of videographers in submitting 640@30FPS video to IS? Completely new to this and hoping for some help from the pros.

Thanks

First: I am a proponent of giving photo buyers choices. Portrait vs. landscape orientation, close up, detail vs. the whole thing ....
Second: I do not know what the buyer wants or needs ...

Question: How do you get alternative version of the same scene accepted at IS?
Frequently a whole batch of pictures are beeing rejected because their appear to be duplicates of previously submitted pictures to the reviewer, which of course they are not.

How can I specialize in something if often times when I submit creative variations I get rejected..

Sharply: How do you get all these airline shots accepted if they are variations on "airplane in front of sky" theme. Not trying to knock anybody, just curious.

On an unrelated note:
Anybody having a slow start for the month too?

Thanks

iStockPhoto.com / Summer slow down is here ...
« on: July 02, 2007, 14:10 »
Just as I made Bronze level over the weekend, Summer slowdown is in full effect today. Bummer.

Judging by the 500 DL that I achieved so far I probably will heed Sharply's advice and start to specialize. My best sellers are mostly research technology related so that is what I will be sticking with for new pictures.

I hope the slow down does not negatively impact the long term earning potential of newly accepted pictures.
