Adobe Stock / Re: Indexing in Adobe Stock vs. Fotolia
« on: February 09, 2018, 14:36 »
@mat - Not sure if Adobe is trying to do this with ai rather than manually for the foreseeable future, but I would +1 the custom thumbnail suggestion as well.

Sounds great! Really dig the videos youve already created as well.

90 minute premise worked well for these, but could be nice to let the contributors drive a bit more. Have them pick locations, talent, props. Talk about finance / permission. More documentary / case study style / fly on the wall.

Anyhow, dont want to get too picky. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Thanks for posting this Mat!

If you're going to profile videographers, I think it would be great to see a series about top contributors producing stock footage at different scales:

-Full stock production studio
-Solo stock shooter working full-time
-Part-time stock shooter, etc.

It would be fascinating to know the similarities between them that help them to succeed, as well as major differences. Their workflows, investments, sustainability, etc.

It seems like (anyone correct me if I'm way off) the majority of active members on microstockgroup fall into the solo producer / part-time stock shooter category, so it would be great to peak into the processes of those who might not post here as actively.

Other than that - I would be very interested in seeing videos about the people that actually buy stock footage. Case studies that could help contributors better understand the actual needs of buyers - how they find the footage their looking for, how we might be able to provide more in demand content to them, etc.

Lastly - I think everyone would like to see more data. Pulling back the curtain on how best to succeed on Adobe based off of actual numbers and statistics that aren't often provided by stock agencies. I'm sure a lot of this is confidential, but would be fascinating to know more about search algorithms and such.

Thanks again!

Ill take another look at IS after getting my port on Adobe. Split about it as such low commissions dont bode well for the industry as a whole. Dont want to miss out though as things can change quickly.

On a side note - I really dig your website, congrats on the PhDs. Looking forward to following along.
Thanks for looking at the site. I just started getting a rough framework and will try to write more along our travel journey. I finally realize that travelling, stock photo or anything that interests me needs to have a record, just like a lab notebook.

Great way to think of it and I completely agree. Im starting a site now to track my progress and try to improve my stock business more deliberately and critically over time.

Thanks for letting us know a bit about yours. Of course would love to hear more as you continue.

Thanks for sharing @silvanalu - great looking port.

Wow - that is a lot of footage to get up in just four months.

It sounds like Ive been a little late to the Adobe Stock game, going to get everything up on it soon to start seeing how it does.

That was my experience with Pond5 overall - took a few months for sales to start.

Looking forward to hearing more about your progress in the future.

Thanks, I already had the material, I am uploading it to the stock plataforms... hard work hehehe. Pond is frozen since 5 january... I dont know if this fluctancy is normal...

About the prices... I am starting trying with 89 for 4k and 69 for HD, I would like to up more... I will see how it sell...

I Will share when I have more data.

If I can ask you: How were your 5th first months?

Regards!

Id be curious to see how your 4k clips sell at that price since theyre so close to your HD price. Pretty easy upsell it would seem to me.

The first 4-5 months on Pond5 were very very slow, but then it picked up quickly. There was a lull last year during the holidays so Im not too worried about it, especially as its picking back up now. Had another sale last night, so three in about a week:

Your port looks great as well, prett similar to the clip that just sold above actually ;) id expct good sales but keep us posted.

Interestingly, for me Adobe is the best too, though my port size is very small (100-200) on each site. SS follows Adobe, then IS, Pond5. I've only made 1 sale on VB.
[/quote]

Im working on getting onto Adobe ASAP - been hearing this a lot lately.

Is IStock better than P5 in terms of earnings? Are you exclusive there? I havent uploaded because of the low commission but would reconsider if sales volume makes up for it.

Videoblocks has gone totally dead for me over the last three months. Was getting a few sales before that. Well see if it picks back up.

Video Equipment / Sofware / Technique / Re: Optical flow
« on: February 07, 2018, 00:41 »
Results are also tied to contrast and movement between foreground, subject, and background.

As an example: If you are pouring while milk out in front of a locked off camera with a black background youll have the best chance for an acceptable effect.

Noise also reduces the accuracy of the effect so make sure your footage is well lit.

Last thing I have noticed is that optical flow often falls apart the longer its used on a clip, so if you can keep your clip durations shorter, between 7-10 seconds, that might help as well.

Envato / Re: Envato - Set your own price

Been waiting close to a month with no response about the beta uploaded as well...

59
@csm - my sales on P5 fell off for three months towards the end of last year but just started picking back up with two sales in the last week.

Definitely takes time in the evenings but I am pretty happy with my workflow now and am starting to pump out clips more efficiently.

I would recommend getting your footage up on Shutterstocm ASAP. I earn more there and it takes less tome for clips to start earning once uploaded.

This is mostly just conjecture, but I recently noticed that my sales spike on months where I upload 100 clips or more, but not sales of those specific clips, sales of the rest of my port.

Im going to try some tests to see if there is any correlation over the course of the year.

Probably so, although this seems like it might be a huge issue if Prores is what buyers prefer.

Very difficult unfortunately. Apples codec war...

I think it would be great if DNxHD / DNxHR became more widespread.

I recently made the switch from Mac to windows and have been using it a ton and loving it. Its insane the cost difference between hardware for the same performance. For my workflow, PC hardware costs less than half of what a comparable Mac would cost for the same performance.

But not to get too sidetracked, for now will test scratch and probably buy it if ProRes export works well. Or wait to see how the agencies respond.

Just read this actually from their latest release notes: "The new QuickTime implementation will shield you against Apple ending its support for QuickTime on Windows."

Not exactly sure what that means as they don't mention prores specifically, but again, will test later with their free trial.

Read it here: http://www.assimilateinc.com/products/#SEC02

@increasingdifficulty - sorry, I meant that h.264 seems to be the only codec that windows PCs can export that is accepted across the board. All agencies do accept ProRes.

I just remembered though that Assimilate Scratch can apparently still export ProRes from PC. Pretty pricey program though at $650 up-front or $80/month.

Depending on your volume though it might be cheaper than buying a used mac for Prores. Or doing a huge number of ProRes exports in a single month and paying the $80 only when you need it a few times a year. Just some ideas...

I'm going to test it soon to make sure it can still export prores effectively, as they announced it in 2014 and I don't know if it still exists.

Thanks all for the feedback and kind words about my port.

@sean - agreed it is a bit constrained. Looking to branch out more soon.

@wds - I actually just started a pricing experiment to try to optimize profits on Pond5.

For the last 18 months 4K clips were $299 and HD were $199. It was actually a mistake originally that they were priced that way, and I only noticed when three 4K clips sold at those prices. So I kept them high. Sales dropped off a lot after September though so I went to a more common pricing of $189 / 79 or so. It's just anecdotal for now, but I've had two HD sales in the week since I lowered the prices.

66
Maybe it's worth a quick test. Just upload a few?

Hi All,

A post from @videostocker about two years ago inspired me to get into stock footage in the first place, so I thought it would be appropriate to share in a similar way.

I started selling roughly 18 months ago on Shutterstock, Pond5 and Videoblocks. (with a few clips on dissolve and fotolia that never started selling like the other agencies).

For about six months I only had around 50 clips at each agency, then around 300, finally growing to around 750 for the last six months.

I've earned close to $8,200 with rough percentages of that coming from the agencies below:

Agency       Clips sold   Earnings percentage

Shutterstock  170 sales     57%
Pond5           45 sales       36% of earnings
Videoblocks   10 sales       6%
Dissolve         1 sales       <1%

According to stockperformer this puts me roughly in the middle of the pack. Not sure how it stacks up to everyone else's first year and change and would love to hear more.

Here is a link to my port on P5, any feedback / critique is appreciated: https://www.pond5.com/artist/stockbynumbers#1/2063

It looks like maximum quality h.264 is the only one accepted across the board.

I would expect Shutterstock or Pond5 to respond to this at some point in an updated tech requirement.

69
In this post: https://www.shutterstock.com/blog/submitting-footage-to-shutterstock

Shutterstock says:

DO NOT submit montages of quick, live action clips cut togethercuts of 3-seconds or less.

Which seems to imply that some forms of montage clips might be acceptable.

At some point I thought I read in their submission guidelines that each clip could only contain one shot, but I just looked again and can't find that language anywhere.

So I guess if you do submit two clips in one you are just halving the price of your portfolio and undercutting the market.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere, but this Medium article is near the top of google's search for "sell stock footage."

https://medium.com/@jakubgorajek/how-i-earned-my-first-150k-by-selling-stock-footage-77a4fa0ad1d2

It definitely made me reconsider whether or not it is worth it to contribute there, as it seems like he earned a good amount even at low prices.

Seems like it might have something to do with a rush to contribute.

Encouraging that they are giving an incentive now to keep prices high too.

71
I listed 50 clips about two months ago and havent had a sale yet, but some of the shots are alternate angles so they just might not be in demand.

Interesting to see that it has become such a high earner for some though. Will get my port up soon.

72
Great - would be interested to know what you think of them.

Just saw this review pop-up today on the Syrp. Again - Im a big fan. I love their setup and you can attach multiple sections together really quickly.

Hope its helpful.

KB - What Camera are you using? That might help answer some questions.

Do you know if it is 59.94i or 59.94p?

If it is 59.94i it means the footage is interlaced. Its capturing two fields at once that are only 1 actual frame. So the effective frame rate is actually 29.97fps, not actual slow motion.

If it is 59.94p (progressive) there are actually 59.94 frames, in which case interpret footage as @increasinglydifficult described should work.
