So how do we react? Do we start bombarding them with mails telling them that the move is unfair? Do we hit them on instagram, facebook, twitter? Do we set up a petition? Lets actually act in a way that tells them this is not a welcome move.

easiest way would be to either delete your portfolio, or stop uploading. they don't care if you just send e-mails, because people will continue to upload. so they really don't care that way.

(One person's good news might be another's horrible news.
So I will enter the fun conversation here)

"Eh..... No membership fees?!"

:D :P

haha, no, it's COMPLETELY free!

You can upload ALL your work for free, and you can do ALL the keywording for free too! no charge!!! Isn't that "GOOD NEWS"???

529
In the spirit of fun & all the "Good News!" e-mails various contributor sites have been sending recently, I thought - wouldn't it be fun to create a 100% "Good News!" site, that is 100% "Good News!" all the time?

Basic premise is, site gets 100% of the profits, contributor gets 0%. You do all the work, site gets all the profit! That way, it's ALWAYS "Good News!" :)

Thoughts? Yes/No? Do you like it? :)

I think they probably "already" do it, or something similar. They just don't tell contributors about it (because this legal agreement/item gives them an out).

This is the new Pond5 terms.

If you do not enroll in the Exclusivity Program, notwithstanding section 3.b. above, you shall not set the price for an item of video Content that is higher than the lowest price for which the same (or substantially the same) Content item is offered by or on any Other Marketplace, and if we discover that the Content item is offered at a lower price by or on any Other Marketplace, we may change the price of your content in our marketplace.

What do you think that price is. SS has $1.50 clips now? What price is P5 looking to implement. They just did the trial (without any prior warning) of dropping prices. Do you think they have a price in mind? Do you think they will drop all nonexclusive clips drop in price overnight?

No, that would be dumb. I think it is just a way to protect themselves for say the odd contributor who has 1000's of clips say priced at $10 on envato, and then priced at $150 at Pond5.

OR - it could also be a way for them to appease customers that 'shop around'. (So you don't necessarily get "all" your clips or anything changed - just if a customer says "Hey! I just bought this clip for $150, but found it for $10 at envato!!" - then pond5 might refund the difference, and/or "price-match".

If they are going to price-match, think of the accounting nightmare that will unleash! Lots of contributor clawbacks will start a riot!

Yes, a bunch of my prices were lowered as well - I think they were doing split testing/testing which price points generated more sales.

Well, I've increased my prices, I noticed they'd been tinkering with my prices without giving me notice. Never increasing prices, only lowering them. At least I think that's what happened, I saw some weird prices for my content that I had never set myself.

Just got off the phone with them, let's see what the future holds for us long term shooters! Now I am posting a video about it on my site but I will summarize it here. I think as a business this is a good move and needed at this time in the industry. I am seeing my RPD go down and buyers shopping around as well. The 60-40 split does not bother me and I would have done something similar. If you are a serious video producer then this is a good space for you! If they keep the buyers coming this will put pressure on Getty to get more content but do be fooled Getty is the one who has shafted the artist for $$$. Pond5 has set it so I make more then they do if I am exclusive! This is the move I expected and aside from a few glitches I hope it does well! Now I did make a suggestion to add photo in the exclusive pack so we could advertise that as well! Watch the video on my channel in about 1 hour if you want more info.   https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwoU327B927MD49NNf16gxw?view_as=subscriber

Surprised you are so extremely supportive. What did they say that made you think this way?

536
no, I don't think so, for a couple of reasons.

a) There would be spammers spamming the crap out of contributors ('buy viagra!', etc).
b) Those that weren't, mind be asking for custom work/cheaper price (side deal)/etc - so the sites don't want that
c) and kind of along the same lines of b, the sites want the contributors to depend on the sites, not realize they can do things on their own (i.e., custom deals/cheaper prices/etc).

There are ways (although a lot of work) to find contributors if they have their own independent site, but not sure if it is worth the effort for you. Noble that you would want to contact them - but not that easy.

as a caveat though - some do allow 'inter-contributor' contact - providing your are either a contributor (or have purchased from the site) before...

General Stock Discussion / Re: The Getty debt
« on: March 19, 2019, 08:07 »
It's popular to make successful companies look like they are in debt, because it can then be used as a tax writeoff.

If indeed this is true (haven't read the article or investigated it) - then I'd say there is some creative accounting going on. Legitimate - but creative - to make it look like a liability when in fact it is profitable.

538
I think it was an AI/algorithm that flagged it.

Looking at it through a "computer's" perspective - the dog's tooth that happens to be right beside a 'pink' tongue from a 'computers' perspective looks like a nipple on a breast.

Just got an e-mail saying there is a change coming to the contributor agreement coming... hope it really is "good news"...

About 5,000 to 10,000 clips of similar production quality and subject matter as hotelfoxtrot would probably do it:

https://www.pond5.com/stock-video-footage/1/artist%3Ahotelfoxtrot.html#1/2063/artist:hotelfoxtrot

Of course, those shots cost a lot to make, so if you're talking $150k profit, you'd probably need 20,000-30,000.

Mm, good point - I had forgotten about them. But yes - I think I read/heard somewhere they actually do much better than that...

541
First you have to invent a time machine.  Set it to go back to 2005.  Check your computer's hard drive to see if your photos/videos survived the trip.  Assuming they did, upload them all.  Enjoy a few years of six-figure income until 2012-ish when the tidal wave of competition hits and your income falls by around 20% each year.

Now get back in the time machine, go back to 1980 and buy a bunch of Apple stock.

If I invented a time machine - while yes - I probably would still do some microstock (think of all the cool 'historic' photos I could get) - I'd probably be focused on other things other than just microstock :)

But - it's a serious question - if you were making $150k, what would you be doing to do so?

542
Title says it all. I'm genuinely interested in figuring out how can I make $150k/year from stock photos/videos?

It's fun to do - now I'd like to figure out how to reach those numbers. Figured I may as well ask in case anyone has some good ideas. Ideas/suggestions?

Perhaps - hypothetically - imagine you personally *were* currently making $150k/year from microstock. What would you have to be doing to acheive that?

Thanks!

543
I agree.

They totally devalued everyone's work in Dec 2018, and what was essentially (on average) a $7 sale/item (split 50-50) has now become between $0.25-$0.50/item, with the unlimited downloads. They got a short-term boost in sales - but now items are appearing on torrents, google drive sites, pirate sites, etc, etc.

I'm sure some authors (a small portion) may have seen a boost in sales, but I believe that is just short term. I think other authors that may have seen very little sales now see a small increase (but overall - less for the majority because now it is more widely distributed, as well as at a lower value).

A number of people complained, but they don't seem to care, because they went ahead and did what they felt like anyways, in spite of a very large protest.

Really the only way is to delete your portfolio, and not submit there. If a number of people did the same, then yes - I think it would stop that.

It is the same with envato elements.

544
Interesting. I have several monitors -

On my one monitor, I couldn't tell the difference for the first image. On my second monitor, I could notice more shadows (that were hidden) in the first image (thought it was a volcano though, not fireworks), actually wasn't quite sure what it was a picture of).

On both, I notice a difference in the orange in the eggs.

Third, bottom coins look a bit better.

I wouldn't worry about it. You can't control it.

Pond5 / Re: Anyone doing AUDIO at Pond5?
« on: March 06, 2019, 12:57 »
I tried uploading several months ago - and then they automatically rejected hundreds of my clips. (Not one was approved). Tried contacting them, no reply.

Strangely - their library continues to grow, so I am not sure if they are just not accepting from new authors, or just have a certain preferred set.

General Stock Discussion / Re: is it worth it to buy drone?
« on: March 05, 2019, 19:38 »
Depends.

Yes, drone footage sells. But there are 100,000's of thousands of people with drones, taking footage, and uploading it. If you did it 5 years ago, it would be much much easier to make money from footage than it is today.

Can you make money from it? Yes.

But will you make a LOT of money? Really depends. If you take attractive footage that people want, keyword/title it properly, and have a lot of videos, then maybe. There is a lot of competition, so it depends if you can make it stick out.

If you are *only* getting it for footage, then you probably should *not* buy it. But if you are getting it to have fun, and maybe make some money too, then sure, go for it.

A good drone will be about $1500 USD.

Sadly for me it's been since I created my account... and I have several thousand files!

no position just means 0 sales... :(

Yes I figured that out at the start of the week. I mean it does say week...  ::) Now I know better.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Possibility to pirate images on EyeEm
« on: March 05, 2019, 12:41 »
This is what you can do.

a) Don't submit to them
b) Figure out a way to prevent image theft
c) Submit to them, and don't worry about the people who will just take the images, because there will be people who need larger images. (Not all images are used "just" for website design/etc).

no position just means 0 sales... :(

I don't yet have a position on adobestock :(

Might have been broken, or updating. Look now?

I had a Position for week, then yesterday there was none.

As someone pointed out, if we knew what the number means in income, that would be interesting. For example, last week I only made $13 on AS. (all of this is round numbers, hypothetical) and I rank 10,000, so people who made $13 last week are 10,000

People making $?? are 6,000, see where that leads? Useful numbers not just a "position".

Now let me ask, and maybe someone knows? Is Position dollars, downloads, or what? When does a week begin and end, Sunday or Monday?
