You should probably stick to just ONE fake name per account.  ;)

And by the way, this type of "marketing" will guarantee one thing: we will NEVER use your 100wa site. Never. Ever.

Try being honest instead. It eventually pays off.

Makes you hope the next one coming along with the same ideas will get your message.  8)

Actually, I did receive such an e-mail myself. Don't know how legitimate it is/was, but was considering trying it. Wasn't sure about the chinese market though, because copyrights aren't respected the same way north american are... so - not sure if I uploaded here - sure, i may see an advance on royalties - but then wasn't sure if then my content would be available everywhere else (for free) as well...

Taking a look at their page, and doing a little digging, it appears to be stolen content. In addition to the style of the sales page, style of testimonials, domain name, fact their servers appear to be in panama, use of name servers, etc which all would indicate a bit of a shady site.

Appears that they've ripped off content from pixbay (where authors provide content for free), and are reselling it, but might even have been taking from sites like motionarray & envato elements, where they recently devalued authors work as well (so in essence, it's like $0.50/$1/video, etc from those sites too).

Even though some of the content appears to be from pixbay (https://pixabay.com/en/videos/list/), and they allow 'free' commercial use, the license does not allow for simply repackaging/reselling as stock photo. So you might contact them, see if they can do something about the stolen content. However, they only have about 7,000 free videos. So... that's another 14,000 unaccounted for, probably taken from the other sites mentioned above.

This site was started 2018. Various 'samples' appear to be have been produced/used way before that.
I.e., looking at the sample images in their sample "searchable database"

#1) I.e., here's a youtube image (originally posted 2016)

same cloud timelapse

#2) Then another item appears in a template in motionelements (a video within a template) (the 2nd timelapse below that)
https://www.motionelements.com/ja/after-effects-template-9347535-holographic-display-02

(same timelapse)

It might be worth a few people signing up just to see if their content is there. There's a few things that can be done if they are selling your stolen content.

Creative Market does exactly same thing with tax withholding, that's one of reasons why I removed most of my work from there. If SS, AS and others were calculating like that, I would earn zero or close to it for USA sales (tax withholding for my country is 30%).

It amazes me how stubborn they are or simply don't care.

I'd say it is probably dishonesty/cheating if they do that as well.

Interesting. Watched the video  -this isn't as "good" as I thought it was.

Unless I am missing something - it doesn't appear to be much better than the 1990's "morphing" technology (basically, you would input two images, and could "morph" between the pages).

This appears to be something very similar, albeit a little bit better.

Now - while this is possible right now (although a lot more work) - it would be an entirely different thing to "design" your own face, that you can then get to walk about a scene and interact with you.

But one BIG thing you guys are missing.

Now you can reload that page 1000 times, make 1000 fake model releases, and have a new 1000 image portfolio by tomorrow :)

Or it could be that real world denial of "people can't afford as much as they use to" kind of slap in the face reality. Its like this all over. Its like things or do you by food or medication or bills?
Most of the time trying to make a decent living is like chasing a water fall. I really wish it wasn't.  :(

interesting theory - but I think people who buy images/videos tend to be in a market where they will at the very least get their money back, if not double, triple, or 10x it...

you don't have people "casually"/for fun purchasing images/videos because they want to hang it on their wall. People who purchase it are using it for business purposes to make more money.

Oh thanks, I begged for anyone the SS forum to review their OSMO, especially one guy who said he was buying one in Dec. and if the least problem is focus pumping, NO WAY, I'd never want one. I could put up with less than perfect and small issues, but if it's like the Nikon Keymission 80 which I owned and sold because it had focus pumping or racking or whatever other names it might be, like searching and inconsistent, I don't want one.

Yes, feel free to ask me any questions...

I like it because it is super compact - but I've found there are only really specific types of shots I can take with it otherwise I get the focus pumping... They recently did add AFS (as opposed to AFC - which caused the pumping) - but then - although now I no longer got the pumping - I found I was getting blurry shots...

I also found that (ironically) even though it is/was supposed to be a stablizer - if I was holding it in my hand and a subject was relatively close to me (i.e., say 10-15 feet away) - the subject would 'bounce' up and down unless I put the 'stabilizer' on an even surface :P (aka makeshift tripod)...

So, it's really only great for long focus landscape shots/videos, OR - if you want to carry around a super compact camera with you. If you get any subjects walking across your FOV while doing a video, or you do a pan and there are significant variances in distance of objects - you'll get the focus pumping...

I found the RemovU (which I may consider repurchasing, even though it is a lot bulkier/larger) - was better at keep a fairly even/consistent shot for pans/etc with different distanced objects. And if I recall correctly - it didn't go haywire as soon as someone walked across your FOV.

That's a big open question. Taking a quick look in the news, looks like some people were whining/attacking them/causing them business problems recently, so it could be that.

- OR - could be a whole bunch of other things:

a) competition
b) desirability of your products/seasonability/etc
c) market conditions in general
d) something else (tech bug/glitch/copycats/etc/etc)

There isn't really a "guarantee" that you will "sell for life" (which I think some people think will happen or the expectations they have). While it is possible to create items that have a long shelf life (a year, several years, maybe even 15-20+ years) - it doesn't mean every item you have will sell like that.

Hope that helps.

Nice dinging watch evanto twist what you found. Why should they answer and give you tax team, instead of just giving the answer? Cheating artists is a regular deal in Microstock.

I'm not sure if it is outright dishonesty by envato to pocket extra cash, or simply an accounting error they've chosen to ignore.

"Disclosing" and "Withholding" are two entirely different things. The "gross sale amount" would need to be disclosed, but the withholding tax would be calculated on the "net" payment to the author AFTER envato takes all their commission, fees, etc.

Quote
"We apply the Royalty Withholding Tax on the Item Price (List Price minus Buyers Fee)."

Very ambiguous statement. The parentheses infer that it is a "net" calculation (which is *should* be) - but the way they calculate it for some authors with withholding tax - they are calculating based on the "gross" item price. I.e., 2x the tax. Hence, the double taxation.

General Stock Discussion / Re: envato double taxation on assets
« on: February 14, 2019, 18:16 »
Exactly - the taxes are being incorrectly calculated by envato for authors that either have partial withholding tax, or have not filled in tax information. A number of authors are being double taxed.

Envato should fix that, and refund authors who have had excess tax withheld.

What I have seen  with the Removu  is if you are outdoors the video is pretty good. Clearly good enough for Stock. The few clips I have uploaded have been accepted. If you are in a indoors in a low light area it has a lot of noise and poor saturation. Just the fact you can carry it around and not have the look of a big camera is cool.

Yes, I agree - I found I need to have very bright light conditions. Anything less had lots of noise. And although you could 'edit' that noise out through post processing, that's a really time consuming process. I found I did get a lot of 'curious' glances as to what I was holding though, which was kind of fun!

Yep, I liked that toy!

I had returned it, waiting for the new osmo, but thinking I might go back and get it - because the osmo has lots of 'focus pumping' (which ruins shots), whereas I very rarely noticed that with the RemovU! Only thing is 4K video quality wasn't that great for the removu.

General Stock Discussion / Re: adobestock keywords?
« on: February 12, 2019, 11:29 »
Hi Matt,

Okay, just found out it does "not" work.

Could you please submit this as a feature request, specifically:

a) If I upload a .csv file, it will apply new keyword orders/etc to "approved" files, in addition to title changes, etc?

It should be extremely easy to implement programatically.

I wish I had known that keyword order was important - because for hundreds of files I have an 'identical' set of keywords for the first 4-5 keywords - and then it varies after that. Simply because I was 'classifying' my work, but it not necessarily what would be most searched/important/etc.

It would be extremely painful to have to 'manually' drag/drop several thousand files, i.e., it would be like 40-50 hours of "work" just re-arranging keywords for something that may or may not result in any additional sales.

Thanks.

Hi -

If you have sold anything at envato over the last few years, and either have a withholding tax applied to your sales, or didn't fill in their tax form - you might want to double check that you haven't been doubletaxed. You could be owed a lot of back money from envato, because there are accounts that have been doubletaxed.

Taxes are "supposed" to be calculated on the "net" amount paid out to you. Instead, for some of these accounts, envato has been calculating taxes on the 'gross' amount after they take their commission, which could be meaning you are owed a lot of back money from them.

I.e., for simplicity, let's say you have a $100 item, and (for illustration) say envato's commission was 50% (with their $3). And let's use the 30% withholding tax rate that was used for several years with with no tax form/tax treaty/etc.

Proper calculation:

$100 net sale  - $3 commission - $100 * 50% commission - (net amount of sale: $100-$3-$50 = $47 * 30% =) $14.1 withholding tax

= $100 - $3 - $50 - $14.1
= $32.90 payable to you.

What envato has been doing for some accounts:

$100 net sale  - $3 commission - $100 * 50% commission - (gross amount of sale: $100 * 30% =) $30 withholding tax

= $100 - $3 - $50 - $30
= $17 that "was" paid to you (so envato still owes you $15.90, but instead kept it for themselves).

(i.e., if hypothetically envato took a 100% commission - then they would actually be telling you 'owe' them money for each sale generated, i.e., $100 - $3 - $100 (100%) - $100 * 30% = -$33 - i.e., $33 they would say 'you' owe them in taxes, and they would never pay you anything).

They have been incorrectly calculating the withholding tax over a long time for some accounts, so you could actually be owed
a lot of money. You should doublecheck to make sure you haven't been doubletaxed, and if you have, you should contact them
to make sure you are paid any back money.

Hope that helps some people here.

hi Mat - okay,

If I update my keywords using a .csv file for already approved files, will it then update my list? (As opposed to me manually having to go image by image, etc?)

Thanks!

General Stock Discussion / adobestock keywords?
« on: February 10, 2019, 23:48 »
How important are 'organizing' your keywords in adobestock for ranking? I didn't realize it seems they have an "order" of keywords (if you have them listed alphabetically, you'll actually get a warning message asking if you really meant for them to be alphabetical).

How much difference does it make to get a sale?

594
Also - reading your notes - you are "lucky" in a way that you already have an established clientelle.

If you have clients "looking" for your work - then yes - it makes sense for you to direct them to your website. You'll take more home.

It would have been better to develop a one-time payment wordpress plugin as opposed to shopify. I know the recurring income is 'nice' - but again - getting people to buy it/use it is an entirely different thing. Plus - you have more control of your data - whereas there are some issues with using shopify as an intermediary. Also - there are already a lot of 'photo' wordpress templates readily available, for $25-$50 as a 'one-time' fee (as opposed to $25/MONTH), which are also a *lot* easier to set up than shopify's interface.

I would make an educated guess that most of the stock photographers here not only have never seen the inside of a studio (or even ever owned one) - but simply work from home. I believe most don't have an established clientelle familiar with their work.

Good luck though, but I believe you have your work cut out for you.

595
As I had mentioned a long time ago (figured I knew where you were going with this, I was pretty accurate)... most stock photographers/videographers don't really care about "uploading" their content, they care about *sales*.

If you can figure out how to make more *sales* (more specifically - a "healthy profit" after paying expenses) - then you'll have a winner.

But shopify - to do anything "reasonable" - is actually a *very* expensive platform. Once you start using their plugins/addons/etc - you'll be looking at paying at least $200-$250 USD/month, if not more.

If you can't show how a stock photographer is going to start making that (I'd say at least $500/month - to compensate for the time in setting it up/etc)  - you'll have a difficult time selling it.

It looks 'nice' - but profit is what matters.

General Stock Discussion / Alamy "good news"!
« on: December 04, 2018, 08:39 »
Seen so many of these threads, figured I may as well start one :)

Apparently some "good news" from Alamy everyone should be happy about! Commissions going from 50% to 40%! YAY!

Comment below.

He may actually be licensed to do that... depends what kind of license for the images he purchased - because technically this would be a 'derivative' work (as opposed to 'outright' selling the images/prints)... so - he "may" actually be "allowed" to do that...

In which case, seems very smart. Not really the best deal for the photographer/someone who only gets say $0.25 for their image - BUT - if he is licensed to do so, then he is licensed to do so (because that may be what you are agreeing to)... I'd check to see if the license does cover 'derivative' works...

How much did you expect to make prior to uploading those images?

Actually, I had no idea. For me, it was more a test. With all the 'doom & gloom' posts here, and the fact there are lots of 'spam' portfolios on shutterstock - AND - the fact there is just a lot of competition period, I wasn't sure if I was going to make anything, or how long it would take...

So - I just wanted to try a small test batch, to see if I got anything...

I've only had that batch uploaded to shutterstock for maybe a week - and it was nice to see a sale, even though it was rather small. But it was just 'cool' that I did get a sale...

Now, of course - if I can upload say 10000 images, etc - and see similar if not better results, then to me, that is encouraging... but of course - there is the time aspect of things (figuring out how to do it intelligently to maximize revenue, etc)...

But for me - it's still just pretty cool that I got a sale for an image I took... :)
