General Stock Discussion / Re: Fake model release
« on: January 18, 2018, 03:19 »
It's not fraud. Fraud would be making a 'fake' model release. From what the poster said, he didn't do that - he just submitted the photos.

If she however doesn't want them online, and can prove she knows him (i.e., a photo of both of them together), then I think it should be pretty straightforward to get rid of the photos she doesn't want online.

802
Really. Hmm. Was that a recent signup, or a long time ago?

Hmm k, thanks for the insight.

That helps!

Hi -

I'd like to register with shutterstock - but they demand a full passport and/or drivers license (nothing covered up). Which means your complete license #, and or passport #, *and* they demand your signature as well.

I think that is wrong - especially nowadays with all sorts of security breaches. All it will take is one breach and a ton of people's identities being misused.

Did you have to go through this process? If not - what did you do to get signed up?

Hmm.

Interesting. The 20k - is that gross, or net after their fees?

Do you find 4k or HD sells better, and do you submit both, or do they automatically downconvert (so if you submit 4k, they do an HD version as well?)

Which do you find does better, the exclusive or non-exclusive? (i'm trying to decide myself which one I should go in, and/or focus on more).

PPS - I forgot to add - did you go exclusive, or non exclusive?

Thanks!

Wow, I didn't catch that - video is even lower than I thought.

Where do you see the price breakdown for video? It seems they've hidden those prices - I can't seem to find that. I can only find the page where they talk about the author fee (55% non-exclusive) - vs the sliding scale (37.5-12.5, 1.25% difference for every $3750 sold).

That being said... did you find it worth the time to submit there? I know you said you focus primarily on animations... but trying to figure out whether it is/was worth the time/effort...

I was considering using envato (did sign up)... But then noticed the amount you get is virtually nothing... You'd have to make a *lot* of sales to even compare to other microstock agencies...

It most cases - they set the prices - and looking for similar work (videos) - the range seemed to be between $8-$25... But the going rate/average seemed more like the $8-$12 range... Since they take 55% (unless you go exclusive - in which case you need to make $10k before it's only about 12%)... That means you get between $3.60 - $5.40/sale... and if they have tax withholding, that's another -30% - $2.52 - $3.78...

To make really anything of that even started to approach say something, i.e., $500/month - you'd have to sell about 150 items/month...

So... my question to anyone using them - do you find you actually *make* that number of sales or higher/month?

I'm just trying to figure out whether it's worth the time to even submit to them...

809
@spacestock  - what kind of pricing did they offer you? Was it the same $25? Higher/lower? I imagine they offer different prices based on the type of clip it is?

810
Thanks for the feedback.

@Chichikov - lol - yeah... At the moment, I am doing this for fun/microstock photography. (I am in a completely different business than photography - although I do rely on good quality images/video in it), but I enjoy doing the photgraphy aspect of things). So I don't actually say, do weddings or stuff like that in that kind of 'professional' sense. So good point.

@jefftakespics2 - Mm, yeah, I hate it when tethering doesn't work. One different camera I have is an amazing camera (nikon - actually I think I have a few) - but then I found out it can't do tethering properly either - so was a bit disappointed. Good thing to know about the d850...

@tk113 - lol, yes, I do have the money to buy it. But 7k is at the moment still a good chunk of change (not yet quite like buying a bag of potato chips). So I still have to think about it :)

Do your sales match up what is being displayed there?

812
What kind of sales did you have before?

813
I agree.

Chances are - they want to buy your clips that are selling - not the ones that aren't - you could ask them.

If they want to buy the ones they are - now you will have $0 income from videoblocks with those specific clips. Look at how well you did the previous year. If you made $2500 or more in the last year with those clips - don't sell - because it is too low. If you need the money now though - maybe you should.

So it depends.

814
Thanks for sharing!

I'm new to this... I was skeptical of whether or not it was possible to make money from selling video clips/photography online,
given all the competition...

But about a year ago, decided just to upload a test batch of videos to see if I got any sales.

I was a bit pleasantly surprised, I got a couple... so the last few months have been doing a lot of work - but... still waiting to see sales on those.

So - that's where I am at. In the meantime though, learning what I can.

815
Income varies, but I can buy this if I want. Just need to justify it.

It's not really 'replacing' anything (I have other cameras for specific purposes). I think for me right now it would just be a really cool, but expensive toy.

So although I'd "really" like to get it (because I did test out some night pictures, and it took really nice night shots compared to say a sony I have) - I'm not sure if simply being able to take better night shots would justify the cost. Unless, of course - I can figure out what niche needs to be filled where people are like "man, I'd LOVE a beautiful night shot of ________" and I can fill that.

So trying to figure out if the Nikon D850 really has any other major strengths I may have overlooked, perhaps that someone else who may have looked at the same camera is aware of...

SO... I guess maybe that is what I am asking. Have you played around with it, and if so - what did you like best about it?

816
Thanks. Read the post - how do you find the picture quality on the Sony?

817
I'm lucky I am in the position to purchase this if I want - although I still need to be able to justify the cost.

To get the lenses I'd want to get with it (1 or 2 good quality ones, probably a 250mm since the 600mm is a monster size lense, and maybe a 25-70mm) - would probably be about $6000-$7000 total.

Is it worth it?

The 'main' advantages I see are:

a) Good night shots for timelapses
b) More accurate color quality/better motion tracking night shots/videos as well.

But - at the moment not sure if that would be sufficient to recoup my cost on the investment, + make a profit. Of course it would be fun - but - need the profit on it as well.

What are your thoughts?

818
Hi,

a) First off - yes, of course you can promote your work whatever way you feel like. If you mean specifically in this forum - well - I don't run it - and you are talking to other photographers/videographers - so not sure how many would buy it. But - I don't see anything wrong with that as long as you don't spam.

b) Second - nice compilation of videos. Even though it was (I'm assuming) all in one shoot - you told a bit of a story, especially at the end with the zooming out of the house. It was a nice relaxing story.

c) I do agree with spacestock though - I would put an intro/your name/etc on it. Because otherwise I have no clue what it is - and to me, it just looks like a 'nice' relaxing video.

d) For watermarking that 'specific' video - meh - I don't think it is really *that* necessary. (Yes, some people will steal clips. But - you only have a short compilation and its too much 'work'). But - if you started uploading 100's of individual clips that were easily downloaded - then yes, I would watermark those.

But, good choice of music, & nice videos!

Newbie Discussion / Re: monthly earnings question?

@shady - I'm talking gross.

You can always cut down on your expenses (i.e., buy a used camera instead of brand new) so your net profit is higher... but yes -  wanted to know what the gross sales were before taxes/expenses/etc... and what kind of effort needs to be put in to acheive specific goals, etc...

pps #2 - you also do have a good point. in some countries, making $2 USD/hour *is* considered a good wage... so you are competing with hundreds of thousands of people from these types of countries too - part of the reason I think maybe some of these sites can get away with paying contriibutors "$0.35" for a top quality image, etc...

@spacestock - thanks. Yes, from my research I was starting to get the feeling motion graphics does tend to sell better... and was looking at some of the talent - and some of it is very, very good... the scene design, the motion, the actual rendering, etc, etc... something I am considering getting into - but realizing there is a bit of a learning curve...

@nitkol - at least $10-$15k/month

@increasingdiffculty - lol - yes, I was noticing that too... there do seem to be a 'lot' of business shots of 'smiling people shaking hands', etc, and even that seems to be a lot (i.e., versus everyone taking a picture of a tree and uploading that)...

basically, trying to figure out what I need to know about this business to be successful at it online...

@niktol - hmm, thanks. hadn't heard that expression before.

and yes - did lose out on something that could have been very lucrative last year (not stock photo related) - mainly because of my concerns about that. (I didn't want to send in a bunch of stuff over the internet, but then it really took off). so trying to re-think that/whether my concerns are legitimate...

Newbie Discussion / Re: monthly earnings question?

Mm - didn't think it was really a 'dog eat dog' - simply - because you can't really "copy" a good photo/video. (I.e., there is work involved, which, I think most people are allergic to. And even if you managed to 'copy' the lighting, props, etc - just because you copied it doesn't mean it will sell - because someone already 'beat' you to the punch, etc).

I have taken a look at a few blogs - found the backyardsilver - where I think he said he made about $3k/month. To me - that seems "low" in the stock photography/videography field - but reading some other posts some people seem to be happy to get paid about $50/month.

So I was trying to figure out - if the people making $50/month only say have 10 images uploaded, or - if it's like they having 1000's of images/videos/etc - and are just making that... i.e., how viable it is, etc...

If you know of any major success stories, I'd be interested in hearing about those...
