General Stock Discussion / Re: August earnings
« on: August 30, 2011, 21:50 »
I'm still pretty new to this game, so every month is my new BME. August has been very good to me, now I'm looking forward to September.

I have an idea, although it is likely just wishful thinking.

Instead of rejecting submissions for "Low Commercial Value", allow them to be added but with a probationary period. No sales after 60 days, and then they'll be removed.

I had a vector that was rejected twice for LCV,  and finally approved on the third try. It has sold 35 times now in the past 5 weeks. Not amazing results, but certainly has some value.

Whats the point of that? Why remove quickly after accepting / why accept something you intend to remove? Nonsense... you think they reject stuff because they dont have enough storage?? for gods sake, there is something like 1 gig ftp space for every single contributor (its 4 gigs on some other places, somtimes 1000-3000 pics) They dont want it to be on display, and thats it

The point is that it gives an image a chance instead of being flat out rejected, and I never said anything about having not enough storage.

I'm assuming that when you do this, the vector and raster files are listed separately? I have only been uploading vectors.

Illustration - General / Re: Exclusive at Dreamstime
« on: August 03, 2011, 23:32 »
I've only been a part of this crazy game for about 8 months. I had applied at IS a couple years ago and was rejected so I gave up. I discovered DT last year and decided to give it a try. I knew nothing about microstock, and was just happy to sell a few images on DT. All of my uploads to DT were exclusive and I was an exclusive contributor at DT for a few months.

After getting more involved and discovering sites like this one, I decided to try uploading at other sites. I tried Shutterstock and wasn't accepted, after my 30 days, I tried again and was rejected again. In the meantime I uploaded to CanStock and BigStock and had a little success. On my third attempt I was accepted at SS (Using mostly files that were rejected the first two times I applied).

After 8 months on DT, my small portfolio has just hit the level for my first payout. After under a month at SS, I have earned the same amount.

I can never see going back to being exclusive.

Dreamstime.com / Re: subs taking control of DT ??
« on: August 03, 2011, 23:21 »
15 of the last 20 have been subs for me.

Although I was happy to see a 26 credit sale this evening. Biggest one file sale for me so far.

The stamp is good Dave, truly good.
They've made a mistake, it should not have been rejected.
And I absolutely agree. The blue version should outsell the coloured version.
They made a mistake. Try again, it looks simple but the stamp is a good illustration and it will sell.
Try again :)

Thanks Eireann, I have resubmitted with a note pleading my case and it was accepted this time. I actually received a note from the reviewer as well.

Following up on my original post...

I uploaded the color version of my previous example and it was accepted, see here: Color Back to School Stamp

I have both versions of that graphic at Shutterstock and the one color "grunge" version has outsold the color version 4-to-1. I reuploaded to DT with a note explaining that it is selling well at another site. Not sure if that will help.   ::)

Shutterstock.com / Re: Shutterstock's 'Keyword Trends'
« on: July 24, 2011, 19:10 »
I have found it useful to always use one of the keywords that has performed well for me as a comparison when looking at new search words. For example, my best selling image at Shutterstock so far uses "xxxxxx" as it's main keyword. If I want to see how well other keywords are performing, I'll compare with "xxxxxx". You don't need hard numbers to see how two words compare.

This may be something that already known, or maybe it is just a coincidence.

I have a very small number of files at Fotolia, and was only getting a single sale everyday or every other day. I stopped uploading to FT in May and my sales starting dropping off. In fact, I went two full weeks without a single sale during the first part of the July. I decided a few days ago to upload a handful of files and within two days I have had a half-dozen sales.

Is this just an odd coincidence, or does contributing more have an effect on my results in the search?

411
I have had a lot of rejections at Dreamstime lately. In May my acceptance was at 78%, in June only 17%. The low acceptance rate in June is due to a batch of files that were all rejected due to being "overly simple" (they weren't).

The frustrating part is that the files are selling, and selling well, at other sites.

Here is one vector that was rejected at DT:
Back to School Stamp

And the reason:
"Too many photos/illustrations on the same subject or from the same series. Your submission should not duplicate content already in your portfolio or content which you plan to upload separately in the future..."

Now, I have a lot of files with the same style, but they are each unique and I have nothing in my portfolio that uses any elements from this design.

Do I try to re-upload them at a later date? Can I plead my case with DT, or is it a lost cause?

412
I saw the ad in the latest issue of PRINT. There is an Istock ad on the very next page!  :D

413
11 of my last 40 sales were credit sales, the rest were all subs.

I was somewhat pleased to find out that the subscription sale commisions go up once you reach level three.

Looks very good.

Their new logo isn't all that amazing, but way better than it was.

Illustration - General / Re: Best selling VECTOR sites?
« on: June 23, 2011, 11:27 »
Shutterstock is one I'd like to try, but their application process is a PITA, I have tried twice, with every single file being rejected both times. I uploaded proven sellers and still flat out rejected. Of course, then you have to wait a month to apply again.

That surprises me. Shutter used to be easy to get in for vector artists. What exactly were the rejection reasons?

At least half of them had no reason listed, a few were "too many on site", a couple "overly simple vector", and a couple with "format issues" although they were all eps 8 or 10.

I have been playing around with selling stock vectors for a few months now. I have been active at Dreamstime, Fotolia, CanStock, & BigStock.

Dreamstime has been decent. I'm getting a decent number of sales, but most of them are subscription sales ($.35). I have my first "Level 3" file as of today, and still haven't broken the $4.00 mark on that image. Overall, I'm happy with Dreamstime, I just wish the commisions were better.

Fotolia has been a bit of a let down. They put a much lower value on the vector file, which doesn't make sense to me. At least with Dreamstime I get the occasional sale worth a few bucks. Every sale at Fotolia has been worth less than 1 credit.

CanStock has been a nice surprise, sales of vector files bring in up to $5 each. Although the volume isn't as high, the commisions are way better.  10 sales at CanStock has earned me more than the 40+ sales at Fotolia.

BigStock is flat, with two $1 commisions in the last 2 months.

Shutterstock is one I'd like to try, but their application process is a PITA, I have tried twice, with every single file being rejected both times. I uploaded proven sellers and still flat out rejected. Of course, then you have to wait a month to apply again.

« on: May 26, 2011, 00:49 »
Are you sure that the jpeg uploaded to Bigstock was RGB and not CMYK?

418
I just had an illustration rejected because it was too similar. Although the style was the same, the content was not.  ::)

I uploaded two similar files, one was 5657x8485 (48mp) and is offered as a TIFF file.

The other is 6000x9000 (54mp) and is not available as a TIFF.

These files were approved today.

420
I have uploads that were just approved today that I uploaded a week ago.

It will take another three weeks for them to approve the vector formats.

Another possibility...

I am a newb contributor. I have been contributing a few files to Dreamstime over the past couple months and had $17.89 in my account. Someone was able to access my account and convert my earnings to credits and downloaded a few images. I noticed immediately and contacted Dreamstime. They reversed the situation.

I would imagine that the people who had their photos downloaded by the person who accessed my account had their commissions reversed.

It's not always what it seems.

422
Thanks maui, I will.

423
I have only sold one vector file so far, and that was only a few hours after uploading on Fotolia. I have had some small success with photos on DT, but not any of my illustrations.

424
Hello all,

I'm pretty new to the Microstock world and have a small batch of files at DT and Fotolia.

The DT back-end is pretty poor. I did figure out how to upload my vector files with the JPG, but the vectors still aren't showing up as an available file format. It took a week for DT to approve the files, and now 2 weeks later the vectors are still listed as "Pending Review". Is this normal?

My vector uploads to Fotolia have been approved right away, sometime within just a few minutes.
