New pricing sounds sensible.

Interesting that they didn't take the opportunity to update us on the proposed rollout.  Maybe we could start a tote on when it is expected to launch.

They jump around a bit for me but definately top 5 (proabably top 4 actually - dont have stats with me at the moment).

I am counting all photos uploaded in the last week.  Maybe I double uploaded but I dont remember doing this.  Obviously no one else has hd this problem??? ???

104
Can iStock count to 20?  I know it is difficult when you only have 10 fingers but I am sure that I have only uploaded 17 photos this week but they are telling my 20.  On my list of photos, it only says 17.  ??? ??? >:( >:( ??? ???

Technically they are not your photos anymore, so its a possible avenue to explore
Technically they might not be able to close your account and freeze any earnings.  But they could.

Consider this... I go exclusive to Istockphoto, then I submit only those images they reject to other sites non-exclusively. Can I do this? What do you think about?
No can do.  You agree to supply exclusive to iStock for RF purposes.  Can can supply elsewhere but only for RM.

Same here. Assume they are swamped.
I thought it might have been because Leaf isn't US based.  Not a good start from them.  they should at least respond and say they are swamped.

oh yea - down from 8000 categories to 177... now, if they'd only get rid of categories all together! :)
with there controlled vocab, i dont see the need for categories any more.

To support what Lee said, Getty thinks there is only a 15% cross over between micro and macro customers.

well you obviously know what you are talking about so i won't argue anymore - and try to sound like I know something :)

But then I am confused, because i can't think of quite a few editorial shots where I am pretty sure no release was signed where there is a main subject to the photo, and may or may not of had background people. - but of course I can't seem to find an example now :(

Does Lonely Planet guide get releases for its photos.  they have some great individual shots (local on the street photos)but due to language difficulties, I am sure they dont get releases.

Microstock News / Re: Lise and Kelly in the New York Times

Agree she should be getting more than $1 per DL since she is on double the commission that I am on.  My guess is around $1.40 to $1.60 per DL.  What camera does she use?  She might even have some XXL sales. And some EL which I have never had at IS.

Depends who Brian Wilson is and how many albums he sold.

I thought the article was a bit fluffy.  More of a weekend lifestyle section than a mid week article.

I would have thought Stephen was making more?? Compare his numbers to Lisa's.

What disturbs me is certain contributors in the Shutterstock thread seem to think this gets them an instant model release.  Maybe there should be a tutorial somewhere about what is acceptable as "Commercial" imagery and what constitutes "Editorial" imagery.
I would have thought all the photos would be treated as editorial (unless you somehow get someone to sign a release).

I just see it as a great way to get a free ticket to an event.

What exactly do flames mean?

Also - are canisters just a recognition thing?
First flame is after 100DL.  It changes colour after 500 and there is one more level.  Basically a flame means the photo is "hot"!

I question whether they will be able to generate the volume to make it viable for business.  However, it would be great from a novelty point of view and would consider the experince worthwhile (well free entry anyway).

The interesting thing will be to see how Getty reacts.  it cant allow iStock to do the same thing as it will majority cut into its own business.

Congrats - such a simple image too.  How are the other colours going?

Corbis has never made a profit.  why? Because they purchased a lot of the photos outright rathr than just taking a commission.  As such, they could put in a lot of the photos which they own, but have never sold (or even have sold).  They could use these to have critical mass at lauch and if they wanted to, take them out once other photos have replaced them (or leave them in).

Plus, if they have enough bandwidth and reviewers, and they can read ITPC, my guess is they will have 100,000's of photos within a month as everyone jumps on board straight away.  I am pretty sure my tiny portfolio could be up there in a day.  Even the big guys (4000+) could ftp (or even send in a DVD) and have them online within a month.

What they need to do is either tap new markets or make it a good experience for the buyer, or else why will they change from istock??

An easy workaround for me is to use it at night when there is minimal traffic on the site.
It's a worldwide site with a big europe focus.  Maybe the US site runs of different servers which makes it quicker when not many from the US are on it?

What I have to say? I make my all microstock business with a 56 kb/s dial-up connection...
I got annoyed just checking my gmail last time I was home (my parents can only get 36kb).

Chellyar - Cars?? what are they? are they the small metal boxes that hold up the public transport in London.  I grew up in Auckland so am use to it - cant wait to own a car again in fact.  We might end up in the SI after a few years (lifestyle reasons) but it would be too much of a culture shock for me.

$39 isn't that much and from what I have heard, it can only come down with unbunddling/separation.

8mb for all of UK I think but it depends on your line.  I only get 5mb dl and about 600kb up as we live in an old converted house.  16mb is meant to be out soon as they next round of exchange upgrades happens.

P - sorry for hijacking your thread.

121
I dunno CJ, I'm in the middle of nowhere, and I get 1Mb/s down at time, and a solild 256k up.. It's not startling but OK.  I most cities you can get symetrical DSL from Telstra now, which is 2Mb/s each way I believe..

What part of NZ you coming back to?
That isn't too bad.  I had heard worse stories - which supplier are you with?  What is your monthly cap - My brother exceeded his cap and was put down to dial up speeds.

It has probably improved since last time I did a survey.

I think the price will be the difference.  Over here you can get FREE 8mb/s broadband (if buy associated products - land line or cell phone) or for 25 (NZ$65), you get your telephone (with free national calls), UNLIMITED 8 mb/s broadband and pay TV (like sky). You pay that for Sky alone dont you?  And a simple phone is $40?

Oh well, at least the grass is greener (literally) and the lifestyle will be alot better than over here.

Will probably be returning to Auckland (better jobs for me) but gf is still pushing for ChCh.  Your just out of ChCh arn't you?

122
BUt the upgrade might not solve this issue.  The issue may be them being a bit to fancy and struggling to get down P bandwidth.

I think a lot of companies forget that everyone doesn't have broadband (or broadband which doesn't really cut the mustard).  I amm fine in the UK, but plan to return to NZ shortly where broadband is little more than double dial up speeds (ie. pathetic).

K - I am going to be stereotypical here and say what I think it shows is that more women work part time.  Therefore the equal earning in microstock reflects that this is a part time/hobbie for most people.

Re Dreamstime blowing there own horn, from my stats they wont be blowing it next year.  With subscription DL now started (after the survey was done), my $/DL hve reduced.

It will be cell phone resolution so smaller than web.  I hope we at least get 50c for it!!  My commision at DT has already gone down alot since subs have come it (haven't they just been promoting highests $/DL per the PDN survey!).

Interesting.  Short on a lot of details though.  Is it just going to be a small DL?
