General - Top Sites / Re: How many images
« on: April 23, 2007, 05:55 »
Fotolia really needs to get serious about their numbers.  IF they were serious, they would have promoted the 3mill mark - or did I miss that?

177
So i'm still not thinking that images should be appearing in both spaces on LO (but i'm trying to think of places where it would make sense - i'm not closed on this idea :)
But what if your image would have been on the front page of the normal photos but is relegated to the second page of the slide shot images (for "business" etc this may happen a lot).

178
Just a coincidence, especially when looking at SS.  SS is subscription so the one off buyers wont go there and a SS person who has a subscription probably wont buy else where.

You might loss a bit between the one off sites, but my guess is that very few price shop (look for the same image at a cheaper price) so what you are actually doing in increasing your odds since your photo will rank differently at different sites.

179
If I paid for premium placement, I would still want my image placed in teh normal section.  You are actually payng to have your image taken away from the main search.  Not good.

180
I have no issue with no subforums.  I only use the "latest posts" veiw here anyway.

181
I am a bit late to the party but here is my view.

I see this as good advertising for you own photos so I would participate if I could.  However, I dont think their buyer market is mature enough yet and may balk at paying higher prices.

Adobe Stock / Re: 7 day ranking...
« on: April 19, 2007, 23:55 »
As I understand it, rankings refer to the day before.
They are updated daily so depending on when you look at it, it could be 1min or 23 hours old.  I dont know what time it updates.

Can you put a link for his SS profile, I can't find it.  Thanks.
Speaking about profile, can we find one if a photographer has never posted in the forum?  I tried and didn't succeed.

this is the link

I wonder if he/she (who is this uber person) set up a dummy account to refer themselves?  That could add a good 10% to their earnings.

if i am reading this correctly, calling the boss a twit and saying they suck is good grounds to get fired.
these microstocks are pretty much the bosses...we are the workers....

Actually man ... you're wrong!

We are - according to them - the artists, and they are our agents.

Even if you don't like that, fact is, they are an agent, and we are their suppliers. They actually don't have any product of their own, it is our product, and they take a commission.
Correct. they are our agent but they can still choose who they represent.  In theory, Lawyers are the only profession who cant choose not to represnt someone, and that is only if they are conflicted, everyone has a choice.

For that reason, the agencies can do as tehy please.  If you want to bad mouth, I suggest you use an alias (most people use a public alias anyway so a secret one shouldn't be an issue.

Was iStockpro absorbed by getty or was it just dispanded?  If the first, are the old istockpro people now getty ocntributors?

Ranking now at 336 after a few small sales and 1 EL (all mine are priced at 50 though I thinkthat was only my second EL).

Off Topic / Re: customs tax on Lens?
« on: April 18, 2007, 04:20 »
If you buy at B&H in NY, they add NY sales tax which is an extra 8%??

If you get them sent to the UK,and they are discovered by customes, an extra 17.5% will be added for VAT I think.

Lets hope Dreamstime doesn't have any stalkers working for them.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Macros who bought micros
« on: April 18, 2007, 04:15 »
and getty bought???? ... hey what happened to that deal?  or are they making their own.. I am still rather curious.
??? Getty bought iStock for $50m.

I think that is all the ones owned by the amjors. Corbis is to start macrostock soon, not sure if they will be doing from scratch or by buying out.

I think Dreamtimes latest moves are gearingthem to be bought out but I may be wrong.

Photo Critique / Re: pick the mistake in this

One thing that I do like about the photo is the boat in the background (on the right side of the image).
I dont like the boat in it. it complicates a very simple image.

191
Use a generic release (ie non site specific).  Most just alter iStocks one as it is the most strick.  Just remove the logo and the references to iStock.

I dont do model shots but this is what is always recommended.

You can see the photographer in the bottle (the refelction, not the actual photographer).

Ranking is on gross sales value.

So one sale at $50 will rank higher than 49 sales at $1.

I have over 2,000 images
How many microstock images do you have?

195
a pity that former referred members can't be resurrected.
Tell me about it.  I had one guy get 3 EL in his last 3 days with me.  He had a create portofolio and I am sure it is only getting better.

196
Ok, that means I can not take part in it..

Hmmmm.... I think that you can download Photoshop, including the latest version of elements, as a free trial from Adobe.  It works fine for 30 days.  I tried out Lightbox like that and also some of the macromedia products.  Give it a shot.
But if your not planing on upgrading to full PS, there is no point in learning the skill is there??  Some people will never want the full version. 60 vx 600 is a bit of difference between elements and the full versionl.

Software - General / Re: CS3 or elements 5?
« on: April 13, 2007, 08:02 »
you forgot photoshop cs3 beta :)  that is what i am using.
How much longer does that run for? Cant be much longer?  That also means you had CS2 or CS aswell (otherwise the beta only lasts 2 days I think?

From UK or NZ so dont qualify for the $299 upgrade offer.  They seem to give good offers to the US.  Note the petition for equal pricing for CS3 in Europe.

Here is a link which might help you in your decision.
Where?

I am in a similar position to you.  I am also factoring in using CS3 in a personal capacity too so not just for microstock.  I am quite interested in trying HDR and making my personal pictures look better.

Software - General / CS3 or elements 5?
« on: April 13, 2007, 04:47 »
I am currently using Photoshop Elements 2 which came with my 20D.  E2 has no Raw converter.  I am not sure which Elements version has a raw converter but E5 definately does.

As I shoot in Raw and would like to simplify my workflow, I am considering getting either E5 (cheap) or the new CS3 (very expensive).

After answering the poll, the question I actually want answered is, is Elements 5 enough for me or should I invest in CS3?

200
I forget what you can do in elements.  Can you have curves and edit an image using LAB color space?
No and no for E2.

Has given me an idea for another thread.
