Didn't you know about the new height discrimination policy at this site.  YOu are no longer allowed to call some one short!

So, it was a glitch that enabled more than 100 to be uploaded.  Now we have that settled (as I beleive this was the main issue) we can move on.

My sales are on track this month (after a BEM last month) and $ per DL is slightly up at above $1 per DL.

well.. sorta off topic but.  Why would shutterstock create a tiff from a jpg then sell it for more??  Doesn't that defeat the purpose - the two files are identical, why would one cost more?
Geopappas explained it but lots weren't convinced.  They made SS put a disclaimer that it was geneated from a JPEG as they thought it was misleading.

From a designers perspective, I guess the price is low compared to macro sites and most places pass costs onto clients anyway.

Who really gives a care what DT does.

It is their business after all.
"Care" and "do any thing about" are different things.  I try to spend time on things I can do anything about.

As you say it is thier business and as such, they should have just said "we have brought this great phtographer on board which will do great things for the site" (ie. positive spin).

Special file types should get a different treatment.  I am an oponent of 25c JPEGs already, what to say about a RAW or a vector file...  Thanks for warning us.

Even SS charges more for a tiff and they are only generated from the jpeg.  Raw should be an EL.

206
I agree with Pixart and Sharply_done.  I don't mind that a very good contributor receives this type of special treatment.  I wouldn't agree if images were not reviewed, or mediocre images were accepted. If one new member has a solid portfolio and a name in the market, I guess it's normal that he receives this special treatment.

I think the issue is that they said they didn't give special treatment.  If they said they had, I wouldn't be too concerned but they have said they treat all contributors the same.  They obviously have not which means that they have lied to us.

I would be slightly concerned as we started a while ago and helped buildd the site up. Now that it is successful, some bigwig jumps in and they give him special treatment.  I would also be concerned as they have given special treatment to the detriment of other contributors (ie. the long time loyal!).

My opinion - they have lied.  Does it really matter.  I have come to expect it in this industry.  Everything they have done recently is to increase traffic.

If you have 25000 contributors and they all have $50 (average of 0 and 100) then that is 1,250,000.  Interest a 5%pa is about $50,000.  Even if everyone has $99, that is only $100k so it is not millions per year.

I am afraid your estimation doesn't take into account size of the portfolio, shelf-life, seasonal trends and so on, so I have to tell you they are not accurate. We don't even have 25,000 contributors, but only half of that.
However, if they would be, do you see a problem somewhere?

All I was doing was putting numbers down (someone else said 25,000 submitters so I used this) as some people were talking millions in interest.  I have no problem with you holding the money until people reach payout as there are costs to paying out.  As someone esle pointed out $100 is not that big an amount.

I dont think size of portfolio has anything to do with it.  A person with 1 photo and a person with 1m photos could both be stuck on $99 until they get one more download.

If a person cant get to $100 to get a payout, I think it is only fair you use the money you earn on interest to market the site better so they do get to payout!

I assume they will be $1 so the commission will be 20c.  THe price can be too low or the processing fees will kill them despite the fact the pictures will be tiny.

I always thought this was a big untaped market for microstock.

Will be interesting to see if it goes to full roll out or if they keep it limited to the 5000 (I assume exclusive) photos.

of course they tell you in selling school to never sell the features; sell the benefits ...

still trying to find a benefit with this one.
The beneift would be to the buyer.  Question though.  Does this help the buyer or when they type in sky, do they get annoyed that they now have to select "clear sky" or "moody sky"?

ie. are they making the search to complicated for the buyer or do they appreciate the level of detail??

either 5c to 30c per download or 8c to 33c per download.
8c would be nice.  123rf now have a guaranteed 30c and it comes out at 33-35 each month.

I guessed 3c - a 10% raise.
It'd be nice to get 20%, but this seems too high to me.
Not sure if you are aware as you have only started recently but this time last year they gave a rise of 5c from 20c to 25c.  I think before that it had always been 20c.

Does that change your mind?

made my guess.  We should have a prize for the winners :)
I thought about having a sweepstake but with only 11 plaecs avaliable, thought it would fill up to fast.

My opinion is they could probably afford up to 10c.  However, Jons post seems to be conditioning us into the risks they fact and therefore my vote was only 5c.

What are everyones guess.

Note:  This is what you expect, not what you want. (ie like gambling against yoru favourite team because you are postive they will lose (that you you at least get some satisfaction from their defeat)).

I hoping that they back date it to all April sales.  Didn't they do that last time?

It is good that he has come out and said it as the other thread was getting very long. (previoiusly he said they would consider it in April).

...and while we're on topic about articles and markets, I'm not sure how many saw the editorial blog post on Black Star Rising about addressing the Chinese market and how Shutterstock is the only agency really doing anything about that market segment:
Interesting, because I thought 123RF would be ahead - they have a Chinese version of their site, don't they?
They are based in Hong Kong (to some extent) as well.

Thanks guys.  Dispite the much higher cost of living and lots of travel, I still save more in London than I would if I was still in NZ.  Not sure how you could live on minimum wage of 5.25 in London.

Not everything is expensive though.  Cant think of anything of the top of my head but some stuff is cheap.

This is completely off topic but I know there are a few clever people on this forum so thought I would ask.

I am in the UK and want to get access to a US website.  the website however has somehow blocked UK users so you can only see the UK version of the site.

The site in question is www.abercrombie.com .  The reason I want access to the US site is to confirm that the UK really is a rip of (they are charging twice the price in the UK).

is there any way to get around this easily or will they always see my IP address is in the UK and therefore redirect me. The only think I can think of is IP blocking softwre (which sounds a bit extreme though I have no idea really).
