General Stock Discussion / Re: Are you serious?
« on: July 20, 2007, 01:30 »
Traveller:  How long have you been doing photography for?  The reason I ask is that you have 1,000.  Many microstock photographers who take this seriously could probably push out that many photos in a year.

Based on that, the work and effort you put into yor shots must be a lot higher (or you work less?).  Therefore it makes sence that you offer your photos for more as they must be more unique in some way.  Do you have photos that you wouldn't consider sending to your macro agency but are still technically ok?  If so, why not send these to a micro agency just to see how the market works?

For example the Canon 50mm 1.4 lens should be in the price range of the 80GB iPod, at least in Germany.
But what about those weird people that shot Nikon or dare I say it, one of the other brands.

I saw one competition that was a 1D, a 2DX or a apple laptop.  Not suggesting you go to that extreme but maybe offer a couple of options for each prize.

Just a hobby for me.  I make more in a day than I do in two months on micro.

When I go back to NZ (land of the low wage - compared to london anyway) that should change a bit.

it's only land of the low wage if you have a crappy job, I earn several times minimum wage and didn't have to work that hard to get it. I earn about 1-2% of my salary through MS, it's a hobby which is almost pays for my gear.
I too will be earning several times average wage (not just minimum) and still wont be able to afford the house that I want in Auckland.

Where are you based.

For me Microstock earns enough money so my GF cant complain that I just bought a new paperweight (aka dustpump, aka 100-400L) - bring on Africa on my way home to NZ>

Is anyone else having issues with IPTC data.  I have had a high fail rate.  I think a lot of the problem is that my description doesn't fit their criteria (25-250 characters) so it has deleted it.

 ??? ??? :'( :'(

While still good, the 30D uses old technology -- DIGIC II. I assume the 40D will have the DIGIC III processor?
What does the process do?  Is it just speed?? Or does it do image quality as well?

The 30D does what it is meant to do in its price range so other than small incremental improvements in the 40D,(10mp, Digic III, less noise) it is really a similar camera.  Worth the upgrade, ???

31
The latest info on the 40D is two days old on pma rumors:

http://pma-rumours.blogspot.com/

I can already see the dispointed threads at DP review if that is correct.

The problem with the 30D is that it is already perfectly good.  The only way to improve it is to give it pro features (not going to happen).

my question for lucky oliver - will there be a keyword spamming alert button anytime??? i would like to use it.  :-\

My question for lucky oliver - what is acceptable use for your watermarked images?  it seems it makes it very easy for a blogger (or forum poster) to steal an image if they aren't concerned with the watermarks.

ah yes.. i guess that makes sense. Perhaps they could be ranked lower if it was ONLY in the description??

Great idea!  And maybe a higher ranking for words that are included in both the keywords and description.
ranked high if in the description and keywords (since must be a major focus) but not at all if not in keywords.

New Sites - General / Re: Moodboard
« on: July 17, 2007, 11:01 »
They are VERY selective and pride themselves on accepting an average of 2% of submissions (yes, that's a 98% rejection rate).
Why bother uploading if they will reject all.  You have to upload 50 just to get one in.  They would have to have very very good sales to make it worth it.  Definately not a MICRO model.  For Macro maybe .

Brave people to voice complaints on the IS forums, that's a sure fire way to get banned.
They were questioning (in the nices way possible probably for that reason )more than complaining.

next press release will be we dont currently have FTP support but will do once we implement FTP support.

Interesting that they are doing blog press releases on functions that they haven't yet released.  It may stop the moaning but will jsut start the questions, of when.  I am off to ask that now.

If you read through the 4 pages of forum posts at istock, saying "wow this is great" there are the minority who are asking why Getty can submit public domain photos and other cant.  Also, how can you sell an RF license on a PD image.

istock have replied that they are treating everyone equally (though it has been noted by users they have a large upload limit and their keywords aren't great).

See official announcement on iStock web site.  Hulton is apparently a famous image library with thousands of rare and ancient images.
... that no one wanted to buy so now they are trying to sell them on microstock.

I think you have forgotten about the middle group.  The hobbiest who has between 100 and 1000 (like myself).  We make enough to feed our addiction (to camera accesories) but earn enough in our day job that we dont need to rely on the income.

I can see the point of a union but the main point of it would be to stop new sites.  We already have enough.  I dont care what they offer, we dont really need any more.  Therefore what we need is a group (and it would need to include all the big names) to just say no to new sites.

New joiners could join them but with out all the good photos, they would eventually gravitate to the say 6-10 "union approved" sites.

On another note, I was checking out my affiliates' portfolios to see if they are growing, only to discover that my top selling affiliate now has only one photo!  I'd been wondering why his photos stopped selling all of a sudden...now I know.   >:(
boo.  Do you think they have removed them or just that they have been lost in the search??

This is the head I was talking about.  It is called manfrotto in Europe.

People on DPreview rated it well (if you want to read the post: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1019&thread=23949334)

Cameras / Lenses / What head for a monopod
« on: July 10, 2007, 07:12 »
I am planning on getting a Monopod at the same time that I get the 100-400L. I can work out what monopod to get but having never used one, am not sure what sort of head to get.

Options:
1. No head. Screw straight onto monopod
2. Ball head
3. Monopod head

Looking at sports events, the pros seem to use (1). However, that isn't practical for me as it means I cant shot portrait or use a quick release plate.

I am also not sure about (2).

Manfrotto makes a special monopod head which just also you to flip + or - 90 degrees so you can shot portrait or landscape. It also has the benefit that it uses the same quick release plate as my tripod. Is this the best option?

I dont get it.  I see the downsite of throwing a brick in the air but not the upside.

tad to dark for me.

Plus it will never be sharp because boats will move over an 8 second period (this isn't a bad thing, just somethignto account for when doing composition).
