General Stock Discussion / Re: Exclusivity Vs. Multiplicity
« on: June 27, 2007, 01:32 »
I psot on my blog at the start of each month which sites earn me what %.  I also think there was a post last month were a few put in there numbers (why dont you start one at the end of this month?).

Keywording isn't more effort if you embed them into the photo before uploading.  Uploading takes longer obviously but with FTP, I set it and forget so I just have to go though and categorise (in this respect, iStock is the most annoying - sites like StockXpert, 13rf and OL are effortless).

I think everyone should boycott the site until they get FTP and IPTC reading on line.

By all means reserve you username but dont upload.  This is the approach I am taking.

I entered a discription manually and it didn't turn up so it is no suprise they didn't put one in for you.  ANyone else with this issue.

Void, re comparing the name to luckyoliver, at least luckyoliver is random rather than portraying the images as cheap snaps.

SnapVillage.com / Re: Microstock or Midstock?
« on: June 25, 2007, 11:21 »
We just need comments from Jon and Chad and most of the establshed sites will be covered.  ;D

I personally think they stuffed up on their market research. Snap village - come on - what sort of name is that for an agency that wants to be taken seriously.

But back to the question.

I dont think they know if it is microstock or midstock.  So I have a picture priced at $1 because it is basic (I think that $5 should be minimum) and one priced at $50 because it is unique.  What do you think the EL for each is (they call it product).  Thats right, both for $50.  ??? ??? ???  Good idea but this stuffs it up.

They also mix free images right into the search.  So a buyer has a page of images and one of them is marked free.  Which one is s/he going to choose?  Though based on the quality that I have seen there maybe they will choose with their feet and go to LO or StockXpert.

a little more research.

minimum payment is $10 and is automatic and comes no later than  45  :o days after the month end that it was due.

At the end of the year, all accounts are paid out even if they are under $10.. again with the 45 day wait period.  Not sure if this is just a safety for them and they will probably pay it out in a week, or if they will wait the 45 days before they send out payment.
They payout on the last day of the following month, so if you have over $10 for June, they pay you on the last day of July.  I guess they have an extra 15 days (upto the 45) incase something goes wrong.  This is similar to 123rf(?) and I think it is ok.  One monthly billing run.  it would be better if it was before the 15 and more likely before the 5th like on SS but I have no issues.  At least it is published and certain.

I set my one photo at $5 - same price as most other sites for a full size.

With their $50 price, are they stealling LO mid stock idea??

Only alow US buyers?  is that true.  very limiting if that is the case, especally since all my photos are from Europe!

It is fantastically fast as there is nothing there.  0 for London and 17 for american.

I think they released it far to early.  Sure release it early to get photos but if you do that, you at least need ftp.  I uploaded a test image and it didn't pick up IPTC.

Royalty only 30%.  You set price at $1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and all sizes are sold at that price.  Subscription you get 30c.

Looks like they do keywording for you if you dont?

Also, what is with the name.  "Snap" to me means holiday snaps.  They should have tried to make it sould professional.

This past week?
that is a good point.  I have been doing a bit this month but technically, the previous 2 to 3 months I have done abosolute zero (as far as PP, Keywording, uploading goes).  yet I still brought in the money.

All of my photos i would be taking them regardless of microstock (not strictly true but I have never gone out just to take microstock photos - ie. I might be travelling and taking some photos and see a good generic background which I take - time taken 1/250 of a second  ;D).

84
This month is a bit slow (on most sites actually), but I have been happy with LO progress over the past few months.

85
I spend very little time (i spend way nmore time wasted at places like this  ;D )

The key is to get your workflow right.  YOu are spending far to much tme getting a photo on line.

Take great pictures so they dont need much post processing.
Keyword etc into the IPTC so you dont have to repeat at each site.
Use FTP to upload to all sites at once (do something else while this is happening so you aren't watching paint dry).
Go through the actual submit process at each site.

86
Perhaps because they're free images, it doesn't matter??
Maybe the onus falls on the user since they are free.  they aren't buying anything so cant hold you responsible???

isn't this similar to Fotolias original free section?

I downsize to 4MP for SS and 5MP (size L) for IS.
What if SS brought out a minimum 5mp rule (or IS a 6mp minimum) in 18 months time and deleted all your photos.

(note. when one of the agencies, FT?, increased the size from 2mp to 4mp, old users could still upload at 2mp so I am not suggesting this will happen, just a posiblity.

90
Were they responding to a complaint or was it the inspectors?

Was it a reasonable query?

91
I submit max size in case they change the rules.  Fotolia never gave higher amounts for bigger photos   When they chagned, tehre were a lot of upset people who had downsized their photos and would now miss out on more $$.

But paypal and moneybookers the limit is $50.  They are obvioulsy trying to make everyone go electronic where they probably have better systems in place.

Are you not with paypal or MB?

K - Had an EL so this month is going to be a good one for me.  ;D

Site still down though and since most of my sales come from Europe, my guess is I sont get my daily sale today.  Hopefully it doesn't scare of buyers long term.

Why didn't they upgrade during the weekend! >:(

But why do it in the middle of the week?  I would have thought a weekend would be a better time to do this.
Agreed.  Maybe overtime rates are higher than sales??  Europe is better than the US for me at Fotolia so hopefully it comes up soon or I might miss todays sale.

however I am not sure from where to get all the exclusive photographers...
Try the Yahoo microstock forum.  They have a few more exclusives there.

I wonder how many events will give press passes to Shutterstock, they are hardly a major or even minor press agency, how much exposure will SS generate from an event, do they have the buyers for editorial content.
Agree.  Both good points.

Kiwirob - I see you point but to counter it, without the presspass from SS, you wont have got the image in the first place.

Not sure how teh photag who took the picture of Gazza would feel if he had a SS photag beside him - $100k's or 1 EL??

Any insights as to BigStock vs. StockXpert?
StockXpert sells more and is easier to upload to with ftp and one button submit.  BigStock sells less, has ftp but you have to do categories for each photo.

Out of the two, StockXpert wins hands down.  Now only if they had a submitte referal program, I would spam this page with links.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hlaf Baked or Naive??  Time will tell but I think the contributors shouldn't get their hopes up.

I saw an news article where Jon was quoted as saying they had already done this for some photags (got them entry into an event) so they were just formallising it.
