Canon / Re: Buying a Refurbished Canon 5D
« on: January 11, 2009, 11:33 »
I went ahead and bought the Adorama one, and purchased a two year warranty with it for an additional seventy dollars. Still a good deal I think. Thanks, Lcjtripod.

Canon / Buying a Refurbished Canon 5D
« on: January 10, 2009, 19:52 »
So I was thinking of purchasing a Canon 5d from either Adorama or B&H Photo, and I was wondering if any of you had ever done this? I'm mostly concerned with the warranty. Adorama is offering a 90 day warranty and B&H Photo is offering a thirty day warranty. But I was reading online that Canon still did a one year warranty for refurbished products. So is there another warranty that comes with the camera or something? I'm sure these guys will not sell me a "crap camera", but I just want to be careful. Thanks for any responses.

Shutterstock.com / Re: SS rejections explosion!!!
« on: January 06, 2009, 22:49 »
Yeah, my latest batch was just rejected. I only submitted three, but I was being cautious. Plus, they were all nature images. I had one of two whitetail deer fighting, and I thought it was really good. The expression on one of the deer was perfect. The rejection reason was this:

Lighting Problems--Purple fringe, blown highlights or lenses flare.
Composition--Limited commercial value due to framing, cropping, and/or composition.

I don't think there was any lighting problems; it was a foggy day though, so maybe the lighting was too bizarre.

Maybe I should just submit it as RM to Alamy?

On PC, you have a mega-powerful and expensive MS Office suite but should I pay so much when I only use 10% of Word or Excel features? On Mac you have MS Office too, but I prefer a lot Apple iWorks suite which is just what I need and so much fun to use and cost only $80.

$80 is way too expensive for me.  I use the mega powerful and free Open Office on the PC.

There's also KOffice (no experience with this one).

Computer Hardware / Re: Do you calibrate your monitor?
« on: December 28, 2008, 14:13 »
I just bought a new laptop, and I was amazed at the difference between its lcd screen and the old one. I'm no longer sure which is accurate. I tried calibrating the new monitor manually, but it's still not quite right. My images are still being accepted though, so I guess it's okay.

The whole month has been pretty dismal for me.

Hi,

Merry X-mas/happy holidays to everyone!

I got my 5dmk2 few days ago and I'm looking information about software and possible workflow tips to allow me to shoot stock footage with that new camera.

I think I need some kind of editing program and maybe codecs (commercial?) as well. Adobe software(premier) seems to be quite expensive so is there alternative for the editing software. I read Leaf post about different sites requirements, so I need so me work flow tips to get videos to these sites easy as possible. My computer setup (PC-vista64) is quite fast with lot of memory so I think the programs can run fast enough to allow video editing. And of course if there is good to know tips about 5dmk2 video shooting please let me know:).

Thanks in advance,

Best regards : Mikko P.

If you want, you can just use Adobe Premiere Elements 7. Elements 7 is kind of slow, even on a new computer. It only costs around $80 to a $100, though.

Not sure if this helps, but these are the files that got me accepted as a vector illustrator at iStockphoto:

Photoshop Elements is more than enough if you're just looking to clear up dust spots and what not. CS4 is for major digital effects. Both are decent programs. Here's a website with some tutorials:

Off Topic / Re: Is it Holiday Season Already?

It has been slow so I thought that making some Xmas cards for sale on Zazzle would cheer me up. Nobody wants them too :-)

Ha! I've been with Zazzle for like three years, and I've only sold about ten things. So don't feel too bad about it.

I failed my first test last week, but I goofed on the file size. Am I correct in thinking that even in "test mode" if one file fails, they all fail?

While we're on the subject of exclusivity, do you suppose that buyers receive some sort of discount to purchase exclusive only images?

141
Yeah, I don't like iStockphoto's exclusivity agreement either. I like how Dreamstime does it, though. Basically, if iStockphoto rejects a non-exclusive's image then that individual can submit it to other agencies. More than likely, one of these agencies will like the image and accept it. This means that other agencies also have "exclusive" content that iStockphoto doesn't have. Of course, the image may not be any good; however, there are always exceptions. In my opinion, exclusivity does nothing to make iStockphoto more appealing to buyers. Hopefully, that made some sense.  :)

CofkoCof, I think your plan for tracking the keywords that led to sales is really good, and I am betting that as this industry matures something like that will become the standard.

But for the reasons you mentioned I don't think it will happen any time soon.

I also doubt istock will be the one to implement it.  They seem to be hampered by shaky infrastructure.  I suspect that may be the underlying cause of a lot of the peripheral issues (buggy search results, site slowdowns/outages, no more live stats, etc.) that are always cropping up.

I thought Dreamstime already did this?  :)

In all fairness madelaide youve only got a portfolio of 200 odd shots and youre a non-exclusive, so really what do you expect.
Wait until youve got around 1000 shots and STILL find it slow.

It seems others have small portfolios too, and most here aren't exclusive, so I guess I can share tendencies as well, and they may or may not be relevant.

Adelaide

It's slow for me too, but then again, I haven't reached a thousand yet. Though when I do, the number will probably have to be around two thousand to keep up with the competition.

At least, I think I did. The image in question (a green toy soldier figurine on Palin's desk) is so small that it's difficult for me to tell. Here it is anyway (in use):

Newbie Discussion / Re: Cleaning your sensor.
« on: October 24, 2008, 20:26 »
I never clean my sensor; it cleans itself. The next time you consider upgrading your camera, you may want to check and see if the camera you want has an automatic cleaning system. It's very useful.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Can inspections become more inane?
« on: October 15, 2008, 21:43 »
I was surprised today when this illustration was rejected at iStockphoto for not being a stock image:

Oh well. Everyone else took it, so it doesn't matter.

148
For those of you who upgraded from a 40D or an XSI to a higher quality camera (like a 5D), have you noticed an increase in sales? It seems that whenever I'm looking at iStockphoto, the pictures that are created from 5D and greater cameras sell a lot more. Maybe it's just my imagination. Most people say that the lenses are more important than the camera bodies, which is why I'm asking whether or not it really matters that much. Thanks for your responses.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: The Digital Rebel XSi by Canon
« on: September 10, 2008, 22:51 »
I've been using the XSI for a couple of months, and I've been happy with it. For lenses you could use the Canon 60mm macro lens or the Canon 17-40mm L glass lens. The macro lens will cost you between four or five hundred dollars, and the L glass lens will cost you around $650 (online).

Example with the macro lens:
