Three-and-a-half years ago, when Editorial was first announced, http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=281732&messageid=5365222 they told us video and vector would soon be included. I stopped asking about that after about a year. Like so many other things that were promised and never materialized, editorial illustrations never became a reality.

Shutterstock is now accepting editorial illustrations and vectors: http://www.shutterstock.com/blog/now-accepting-editorial-illustrations-and-vectors  Will iStock be eating more dust soon?

So I'm just curious. Why haven't nuno and stalman been booted? Or at least had their crowns revoked? I'm not rooting for that to happen, just wondering.
All their images have been removed and their names don't show up when doing a search, so they are effectively gone.
Oh, I see. I was just looking at the main profile page. I didn't notice that there is no link to portfolios.

I guess a faster internet connection would help too.

It won't help the site perform better.

Let's say you worked 7 days a week. 999 illustrations, divided by 7, is roughly 143. So 140+ per day. Since there is no DeepMeta or other bulk upload for vectors, and since the site is so g.d. slow, let's say it takes 10 minutes to upload (both EPS and hi-res JPG), write descriptions, and add keywords. So that's 1400+ minutes just spent uploading per day. If that number looks familiar, that's because 1400 minutes = 24 hours.

So I'd venture to say that it's not humanly possible for one person to upload 999 files/week.  :)

iStockPhoto.com / Getty Clip Art "mirroring" has begun

Hmm. I'm not buying the "tightly curated" part. It looks like it's all from 1995.  :P

I just wanted to give everyone a head's up that we will be moving some of the old clipart.com vector content into the Partner Program. In order to do so, it will be uploaded to iStock to a non-Exclusive contributor account so that it can be mirrored on Thinkstock and Photos.com.

These files will be very tightly curated: We're only moving the content that we feel still has a chance at selling. It's a very small portion of the overall collection of vectors still on clipart.com.

The files will go through the normal inspection process and will be subject to all the usual contributor rules such as the weekly upload limits. This way the files won't spam Best Match.

The files will eventually be moved to our Value Collection (formerly the Dollar Bin) once they've mirrored on the Partner Program sites.

We wanted to let you know in case you happened to recognize any of the content: This isn't an infringem, it's wholly owned content from Getty Images.

If anyone has any questions just let me know!

« on: December 07, 2012, 15:34 »
Still very slow for me. In fact, I'm now in the habit of clicking a link on the site, then going to another browser tab to do something else while I wait for the iStock page to load. Half the time I forget to go back, it's so slow.

Wow, are you joking? Since when did this become the pan-handlers forum? If you want more DL's, put the work in and earn them.

« on: November 30, 2012, 15:40 »
Yeah, I want to try to get back to enjoying myself again.  The changes from two years ago and the constant death spiral haven't inspired much enthusiasm and a chunk of my decline is from lack of uploading.  I don't need actual gains as much as I need the possibility of gains to inspire new stuff.   ;)
Well said. I realize one of the reasons for implementing the RC system was to encourage new uploads and keep the collection fresh. But everything else that's happened since then has been so demoralizing, there's little incentive to upload. And what is the point of new files if they're not getting seen in search results? Every day I get DLs on files I forgot were even in my portfolio, they're so old. So it's like there's a double disincentive to create new files.

I've found other work, so I no longer rely on iStock for my income - maybe it would be good to break free and find some joy in it again.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Scam site
« on: November 12, 2012, 12:14 »
There's no way they have the files.  They just taking your keyword search, passing it to IS, scraping the results and re-formating for display.  If you could actually "sign-up", it would end up being either a referral link scam or somehow they would be using a subscription plan or something to buy the image and pass it on.
The voice of reason. Thank you. My lack of knowledge in this area made me paranoid.

I thought it could be some sort of elaborate phishing scheme, but that seems a lot of work to get the credit card numbers of a few gullible people. If they indeed have the full-size photos and vectors, that brings up the big question of iStock's security (or lack thereof).

iStockPhoto.com / istockreseller.com - Scam site?

So apparently they're aware of this, but I'm wondering how it was done. Looks like the entire iStock library for sale at a discount:

Kelvin has a post telling people not to link to it:

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Uploading Raster versions of Vectors?
« on: August 14, 2012, 14:43 »
When they split exclusivity by file type, they made a proclamation that you couldn't upload raster versions of your vector files. I thought at the time that if they are going to define raster illustrations (e.g., watercolors) and 3D renders as "photos," then prohibiting rasterized vectors was just arbitrary. And it is. I have seen rasterized vectors that contain type, which is prohibited in vectors but not in "photos." So the person just uploaded the rasterized version and put a note in the file description to contact him if they wanted the vector.

I have heard of some people getting a "photo" rejection that says "please upload this as a vector" or something like that. You could maybe get around it if you said that the effects in your vector were not compatible with EPS 10. I don't think the right hand knows what the left hand is doing at iStock, and I don't think this arbitrary rule is listed anywhere in the manual(s), so it's worth a shot.

I would have thought that people with 9000+ files (good files!) were immune to the past couple of years' money grab downturn.

Wow, the guy who designed the iStock logo has jumped the exclusive ship. I follow him on Twitter and he just posted some links to his files on Shutterstock.

I would add that the original post is criticising IS for accepting the content - site's mistake not the contributors.
Exactly. In the case of the Levi's illustrations I linked to, the copyright info is in iStock's own wiki. So one would hope that iStock inspectors would be familiar with it.

I just looked, and there's an entry in the wiki about Levi's red tab!

(no way to permalink it - but you can search for yourself)

I wrote to CE months ago regarding these files, and others, that have a red tab on the jeans pocket:

http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-illustration-13405135-jeans-pocket.php?st=7f886ed

http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-illustration-15807647-jeans-pocket-with-money.php?st=7f886ed

The red tab, regardless of the stitching on the pocket, is trademarked by Levi's, and is one of the most recognizable marks in the world. And Levi's is one of the most litigious companies in the world when it comes to protecting their marks.

Speaking of pocket stitching, there is this one, plus a handful of others, that has a 'W' on the pocket. Hello, Wrangler!

http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-illustration-18241655-back-pocket-with-tools.php?st=7f886ed

I've stopped caring. Let Levi's, et al, sue them. In fact, it's probably best to notify the companies directly rather than iStock.

I had no idea the price for an XS was 10 credits!!

I can't find a way to take an image out of E+ ?

They're locked for 6 months, so if promoted within that timescale, you can't.
Argh. I think it's been almost 6 months - will it be apparent when I can change it? I've looked at the file info page and the My Uploads page and can't figure it out.

Being a stock logo does not preclude it from being unique.

No idea why IS had so many issues when there are plenty of players already doing it.
iS is no longer the nimble upstart it's a corporate behemoth. Other sites can deploy new stuff much faster. iS was the last of the micros to implement EPS10 files for vectors. That was six months ago, btw, and they haven't changed the upload page or the training manual.

Wow, the two big banners are for collections that don't feature regular contributors. And when we complain about low sales, they tell us to work on our concepts. Hmpf.
