The free images that I was quoted talking about was on 123rf where you donate a free image for a certain about of days (normally 10) and only the small web size image is free and all the other size are paid for in the normal way.

Miz

I am the person you are quoting about the free images and can I say they I have never complained about subs. Its a personal opinion if you opt in or out of subs, personally I have tried opting in and out, and not found a large difference either way. So have stayed in.

As for the free images they are only available as small web size but help that image rise up the search results so you sell more larger images. Again it works for me, maybe because of the images I produce maybe for some other reason. I do this as my job so I wouldn't give my images away if it didnt work.

I love Fotolia too, month on month I am moving up the rankings (slowly). Maybe with all the stars dropping out we can pick up some of the scraps!

I nearly pulled all my hair out getting into istock, it took me four attempts slowly chipping away getting one images passed every other attempt!

Try to be original and keep your chin up, you will get there in the end

I found that donating my images for free made a big difference in sales, they doubled from one month to the next and putting on 10 or so free images a month they have stayed at that level.

Feature pics perform quite well, I get a payout most months. Its odd how some sites perform good for some people and not so well for others.

I just got my last payment, the last month earned me more than the previous 6!

The way I look at is a sale is a sale, if you have raw file on your desktop why not sell it. I know you will get a small amount for it but you wont get anything if you dont upload the image and it sits on your hardrive.

I too base my images round a theme, about a set of 10 images then move on to the next theme. After about a month I go back review how well the images have sold (or not) and see if I can improve on what I have done or expand on the theme (or just drop it!)

Adobe Stock / Re: does keywords order on fotolia matter?
« on: June 21, 2008, 11:20 »
As in subject. Does it infuence in any case search engine?
It a lot of work to reorder keywords in my 1500 photos' portfolio, that's why I ask.
Thanks
After all the talk about the "relevance" search on fotolia I did a little experiment. I uploaded 2 images almost the same, one portrait and one landscape. I used 8 keywords on one and 30-40 keywords on the other. The one with 8 keywords got placed at the top of the search. This explains why there was one certain photographer whose images were dominating the searches. He only had a few keywords on each image. Anyone else try this?
I just checked out your experiment and indeed it works but when you click on the downloads preference most of the top images dissappear. I guess this means that yes your image might appear near the top on relevance but customers are not influenced by the results and are willing to dig a bit deeper in the search. Also by only putting 8 search words it does cut down the amount of words that they can be found by and thus appearing in less searches...swings and round abouts!

Thats great news, you will find it was worth the effort. Alamy are one of the better earners for me.

I started ordering my keywords in all of the new uploads I did from about 2 months ago and I can report that it has made a slight difference (my Absolute rank has gone from 720 to 708). So I would say do it with any new images but dont bother doing the old ones.

I don't see the problem here, surely if its a hobby you do it for fun and not for profit.

I just got back from doing my hobby (mountain biking) and nobody paid me for riding round the wood for 2hrs! in fact I made a loss as I got a puncher! If anyone wants to pay me for my hobby (via sponsorship) I am willing to do it for $1 an hour  ;D

New Sites - General / Stock photo spot
« on: June 18, 2008, 01:26 »
Has anyone else had an e-mail from stock photo spot. I was caught out by them in my early days of uploading (when I sent my images to anyone who would take them) and after 3 or 4 months I stopped submiting to them because they never paid out or answered my e-mails.

Today out of the blue I received an e-mail apologising for non payment and asking for my paypal e-mail address so they can pay the outstanding balance. It sounds a bit dodge to me but I cant see what can go wrong should I trust them?

I get a spike at the start then after a week or so it slips back to 2/3 a day for my best seller and pretty much stays at that level.

I have had one sale  :( Bit of a dead dog!

Yaymicro / Re: Yaymicro.com looking for contributors
« on: May 20, 2008, 01:44 »
I think it is to the advantage of contributers to support well run new sites that emerge. Especially if they take the place of badly run estabilished sites. Yay Micro is a good example of getting things right from the start.

Albumo.com / Re: Any Updates on Albumo ?
« on: May 13, 2008, 02:58 »
I am getting a steady turn over at Albumo, they are far from my best seller but I just made another payout with them and the upload is very easy. I hope that they are around for a while to come.

I feel quite disappointed with shutterstock with the way they have handled the pay rise situation. I don't understand why they gave us a two week window of when they might increase our money then leave it to nearly the last day. surely it would have been better to have just said it will be on the 13th and put us all of of our misery. I hope it will be worth the wait....I woke up this morning excitably turned on the computer and was greated with the usual .30  :(

General Stock Discussion / Re: Refferal-links
« on: May 09, 2008, 10:03 »
When I decide to try a new site I tend to look for people referral links in the hope that they will do the same for me later but not sure if it works. I have the attitude that its another revenue stream for artist you might as well use it.

I agree - and yet, some people have blasted others for posting referrals - you can never please 100% of the people 100% of the time :)

Hmm dont get why people moan about posting referral links...maybe they are worried that their little secret site will get out! but without a good stock of images and customers sites will never thrive.

Just as a point of interest I have only made $10 from referrals in 2 years! beers on me! LOL
