Yay, out of the blue, I got my code yesterday! Actually I didn't expect that, because I thought my chance had gone. A very classy move by Adobe - thank you very much, I really appreciate it!  8)

Shutterstock.com / Re: Shutterstock Footage Rejections
« on: January 10, 2020, 18:46 »
Before you make any big moves with your equipment, workflow or anything, try to resubmit those same footages again a couple of days later. No need to edit or change anything. Shutterstock reviewing process is so random these days, the AI can be incredibly good and incredibly stupid at the same time, so it's impossible to predict the outcome. That's why I always wait a day or two, maybe submit a new batch, before I give it a new shot for those rejected footages or photos. Most of the times they are all approved faster than I can say "Microstock - not worth it"!  :D

Running very, very slow here as well - only my sales move slower.   :D

They reviewed my 33 submitted images on Dec 31th and a day later a few more. Unfortunately, those shots reviewed by the next day hit that magical 300. Just my luck again.  :(

General Stock Discussion / Re: Mostphotos--Is it working.

I forgot all about this useless site  :P

Very true, hardly any sales there but I use it as my third backup for photos. In that purpose it works great.

Anyone else having a problem to login to your Mostphotos account. I get the message as "Wrong email and/or password". My password has been the same for ages.  :'(

Jo Ann Snover was correct two or three years ago when istock changed the subscription payments to 'percentage of whatever the client pays'.  She correctly predicted that this would allow istock to offer massive discounts to customers and then pass on those discounts to contributors.  That's exactly what has happened.  And this is why RPD is declining (and will continue to decline).

In my case my monthly sales have remained fairly stable, but income has declined by about 40% over the past year.  This is a direct reflection of the discounts being given to customers then passed on to contributors through reduced subscription payments.

Several years ago Getty support published a video reassuring contributors that 'this is not a race to the bottom'.  In reality that is exactly what they have done.  Their business model appears to be to give bigger and bigger discounts in order to retain customers - and that means lower and lower payments to contributors.

At the peak istock was the most successful microstock agency with gross revenues of about $400 million.  Getty changed the model away from 'high volume' and destroyed the revenue stream which is now in the region of $200 million.  So istock's gross revenue has dropped by half and now they reduce payments to contributors in a desperate attempt to maintain the customer base.  Is it any wonder that for most contributors sales and income have dropped by a significant amount?

I'm wondering how they are planning to maintain the contributor base as high as possible with this business model. All credibility is gone, revenues are gone, mutual respect is completely missing. How can anyone work for them when there is no minimum payout threshold. They are literally giving away some of our content for free.

Thomas Cook travel just went bankrupt leaving 600,000 stranded and 21,000 out of work.

Offtopic. I was watching the news showing a Thomas Cook airoplane taking off. Perhaps at least all related stock media to have some boost sales. (in other words, one's death is other's survival...)

Actually, I sold the Thomas Cook logo (I shot it three weeks ago for Adobe editorial) eight times today... Not that it makes me rich, though.
I sold an image of a statue of James Cook.....no relation yesterday. Wonder if someone is confused?

Fox News probably bought it, they are not too precise about facts and names, lol.  ;D

That's one gutsy move to start your own business in such a competitive branch as the stock industry is. Hope everything is going well with this project.

Quite impressive numbers! How big is your portfolio, if you don't mind me asking?

Hey Mat just watched the webinar recording and it was a really informative event. I learned a lot of new things about keywording and the importance of it. Much appreciated that you give up your time to help others!

It's 3am here in Finland so probably I'm not going to see the live stream but I do appreciate the webinar is available afterwards as well. The subject is very interesting - looking forward to your presentation. Good luck, Mat!  :)

No true income possible to earn on MS these days unless you are extremely devoted and have no life outside. My guess is that by doing stock photography full-time, at least in my case, I would be alone and broke in six months or less. I might as well upload all my stuff to Pixabay, perhaps I would get lots of views which would warm my heart at least, lol...

I really put some effort into my new summer images but only a few sales so far. The good news is that my Christmas images are selling like hot cakes, don't ask why. Is there a Christmas season somewhere in the world at the moment? :D

Hi there,

Can any SS contributors confirm if you're able to access the Account Settings of your profile? I'm currently getting a Error code: 500 and want to check out if that's just me.

Thanks in advance.

Yup, same here. I get the error code every time I try to access the account settings, so it's not just you.

Hi Jacob

I went to your newsletter and then to your own site. Very smart and modern looking. But I scrolled to the bottom of the page and was looking at the footer when the screen froze. My other Chrome tabs were fine. It started working again and I looked at a specific image and it froze again - I was trying to press "Extended" but nothing worked. After a while, it starts again. Don't know if this is a server issue, but worth looking at.

On the more general point, I still have my Symbiostock (Version 2) site and it works fine. I recently moved it to a new hosting company to give myself some more storage for new images, but sales are rubbish - one or two a year. I only keep it because I put so much effort into it (and I know that make zero business sense but I'm attached to it!)

Steve

The site works fine for me when I use the latest version of Chrome. I have no problem on Android either. Very clean and stylish looking layout btw.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Direct contact from a customer?
« on: February 03, 2019, 10:34 »
Maybe it works differently for photographs, I am an illustrator and I got several custom work requests through shutterstock (I put my e-mail in my profile description).

I don't do any other marketing, no website or FB or insta just a twitter account for doing automated tweets whenever I had work accepted. Some customers also contacted me through that.

That's a great idea to put email in profile description although it does feel a bit bending the company rules since they don't want us to deal direct with customers. Has anyone else done this on SS?

A lot of great advices here with the community, thanks a lot! I feel I need to find my own way and my own 'authentic' style to work as a photographer.

Newbie Discussion / Direct contact from a customer?
« on: February 01, 2019, 02:36 »
When I upload photos to agencies they are all attached with description and 50 keywords of course, but there are also some personal information, such as my email address, phone number and website. I guess I dream of making big sales with customers directly and some lucrative freelance gigs, lol. But the truth is nobody has ever approached me in these two years. Now, am I that lousy photographer, or don't the buyers get those information from the image data?

Honestly, I think the site might have some potential but that crypto currency thing is way too confusing and uncertain. Therefore simple no-go to me.

I just ended my business with this site after 7 years with them. clean up delete everything.

After much wasted time there I finally did the same on last week, and I won't look back. That site is dead to me now.
