Hi everyone,

I maintain an account with a distributor that sells electronic goods on the side and can get the Wacom Intuos3 6x8 - Mouse, digitizer, stylus - 8 x 6 in graphic tablet.  I'm just wondering if anyone has any information on this type of tablet and how effective it would be for photography given your experiences.

In Canada, Futureshop retails them for $500 but I can snag them for almost 40% off, so I figure if its useful I'd go for it.  I just can't find anywhere that gives a video demo in action.

Thanks in advance for any information.

Joseph

Hi Jon,

I appreciate that you have come over to the forum to discuss things with us.  I personally do hope that you stay around and discuss more with us because those that can be civil can probably offer some information that can be helpful to you in terms of making the site better for those who use it.

I'd like to just make one reference back to the last posting where you kept referring to photographers as clients - it could definitely be just me in that I don't think the description of 'client' is a good word for the photographer - but more along the lines of supplier or something like that.  Regardless of how you look at it, you obviously realize that the relationship with us is important and I'm happy to see you reaching out.  I hope that no one blows the opportunity.

In my opinion, SS is great because it makes me money (this month not so much  :-[) but I think that there can be some additions that can be of use.

One that I would like would be a way to categorize my photos for personal use where the photos can be linked together by particular shoot, giving the photographer an idea of how much that particular shoot has been able to make over time instead of going through and calculating manually.  I'm not a programmer, so I dunno the logistics of it.

I can't think of anything else, but if you're still on here, I'd love to get a constructive thread going.

Well, the title pretty much explains it.

I was doing 50-70 dollars a month on iStock but now that they messed with the keywords again, I'm having a lot of zero download days.  I like the site and the potential for downloads are there, but why does it have to be such a crapshoot?

Software - General / Canon EF100mm f/2.8 Macro USM
« on: March 24, 2007, 13:30 »
Looking to buy this lens, what do you all think?  Any experiences?

As well, I'm looking to buy it from BHPhotovideo.com.  Now, has anyone had any experiences with them.  Reason being this:  I'm going to have them ship my product to my grandmother's house in Florida who is coming back to Canada next month.  Two reasons for this:  I'm looking for a way to avoid shipping long distances and any surprise duties at the border (since my grandmother will have been there a long period of time, she can bring back a lot of stuff duty-free).  To the point, if I have problems with them, how good are they with customer service since I'm in Canada.  I will be purchasing the USA warranty.

Thanks again,

Joseph

Microstock News / Why isn't 123RF "submit" page working
« on: March 10, 2007, 14:08 »
Call me crazy, but its been forever and I can't access the submit page on 123RF.  Am I doing something wrong?  It keeps telling me to come back in an hour

Off Topic / Is anyone interested in buying a Canon EF lens?
« on: January 08, 2007, 20:32 »
The lens is the EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 USM.

I am looking for $175 CDN for it and would like to get rid of it since I bought the 70-200 f/4L.  Is anyone interested?

Thanks,
Joseph

LuckyOliver.com / Buyout my LuckyOliver Account
« on: November 27, 2006, 09:13 »
Hello designers or anyone interested,

I have $64 in accumulated cash and 130+ tokens in my LuckyOliver account and I would like to sell that off to a designer looking for a deal.  I am asking $70 US as the total value of the tokens and cash is over $100 which is a savings of 30%.

The reason being is that LO refuses to cash me out before $100 and I'm in desperate need of the money, and I don't foresee at any time soon that I will be reaching $100.  I don't really want to sell at a discount, but I understand it would be necessary for whoever wants to buy the funds in the account.

What will happen is that I will ask for a Paypal transfer, and I will delete my photos on the account, change the name to yours and give you my log-in and password.  Then the account is all yours to change however you please.

I would really like to do this soon with Christmas coming up, so please post if you are interested.

As well, my StockXpert account has $14.50 in it.  If anyone is interested in that account, please let me know.  I am willing to sell both accounts for $82 US.

Thanks,
Joseph Gareri

Microstock News / iStock News is annoying
« on: October 18, 2006, 00:14 »
hey everyone!

I'm still kicking.  I just wanted to point out that iStock News is a really annoying member of this community and really isn't doing much but clogging the boards (in my opinion).  We as a community bring up stuff on our own and now every once in a while we get iStock admin posting stuff that rarely gets any activity.

I've been quiet as I've been studying and back at school and looking for full-time employment.  But I do hope to be more present.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Cameras / Lenses / Microdrives (6GB) for sale
« on: September 16, 2006, 12:26 »
Hey everyone,

Here's the deal with this post.  You all know I'm not some sort of ad guy who comes into every forum trying to sell something.  I've been part of this forum for almost 6 months now and I've never tried to sell anything.  The reason I'm trying to sell this is because I want a few microdrives for my Digital Rebel but I need to buy 20 from a distributor here in Canada.  It will cost WAY too much to buy 20 without having them sold already, but if other people here want one or two I will be happy to give them to you for my cost + shipping fees.

I can get Hitachi 6GB Microdrives (brand new, not stolen or anything like that) from a well-known Canadian distributor ($1 billion in sales last year - Synnex Canada) for $120 CDN each (here in Canada they retail for as much as $230).  Is anyone interested?

I apologize if this post annoys anyone.  If Tyler or anyone doesn't want me to post anything like this again, I will not do it in the future.

Thanks,
Joseph

General Stock Discussion / The hype is...well hype
« on: September 11, 2006, 07:13 »
September has brought nothing in terms of any evidence to substantiate the hype....for me at least.  Its gonna be an average month at best and SS has slowed to a halt.  I used to get downloads daily now I'm struggling to get any.  I'm really not sure why but its not cool.  I coudl have had a payout if it was like August but now I'm sad.

General Stock Discussion / Interesting Find
« on: August 22, 2006, 08:44 »
I have come across an interesting find as in that FeaturePics accepts photos that most other places don't.  I have the same photos plus those that they accept on FP as I do on SS and others (minus the rejected ones).  My only sales on FP are those pictures not found anywhere else.  I think thats pretty interesting in that uploading all my rejects there would be more time efficient  8)

Anyone else find that?

63
As an uploading 'artist' (quotations because well...) I don't really care too much about 'community action' or whatever it is they call it.  I'd rather have the 30 cents in my pocket instead of downloading someone else's photos and I get nothing but a photo that I can't really use for anything because I'm not a designer.  So how about if LO starts handing out credits and allowing us to convert them to coin....doesn't have to be 30 cents, could be 20 cents per photo....otherwise the point of these stupid tokens is lost on me

StockXpert.com / The hype is gone, and I don't see much left
« on: August 14, 2006, 08:52 »
All that hype at the beginning about StockXpert is now gone and its settled into the lower-middle tier of micro agencies.  In my opinion anyway.  Reason being is that I have not had a sale in over a month and I have almost 150 images online.  Every other agency (including Bigstock) performs better and most with smaller portfolios and such.   Is anyone else finding this?  Is anyone else starting to believe that the major players are the 'only' serious players?

Off Topic / Shooting Air Shows
« on: August 11, 2006, 08:56 »
Hello again,

I was just wondering what would be the appropriate way (and correct way) to shoot planes at an air show.  Most likely in the sky, the sky will be much brighter than the planes (I'm assuming) so I don't want to overexpose the sky or underexpose the planes.

Any suggestions?

iStockPhoto.com / Lightboxes: Their use and importance
« on: August 11, 2006, 08:52 »
Hello everyone...

So glad to see that traffic has really picked up here and its very interactive.  I was just wondering what the uses of lightboxes are for those that create them and what happens if pictures from your lightboxes sell?  Is it beneficial for me to create lightboxes with other people's images?  How does this work?  I'm not used to iStock just yet and this would be another step in acquainting myself with their system (so complicated).  As well other people have put my images in their lightboxes...what does that mean?

Thanks again,
have a good weekend,

-gareri

iStockPhoto.com / iStock welcomes ME
« on: July 25, 2006, 12:38 »
YAY

Finally got into iStock.  Its about time too.  I was waiting because I feel so left out since everyone (even nubes) get in on iStock before me (being involved with this for 3 months and not being in, gets you down) but I'm finally in.  Hopefully I can be successful on it - any tips for them?

Whats with this 30 uploads per week business?  I'm not sure what thats all about...will that change for me?  I have like 300 photos that could potentially meet the iStock bill.  :(

How are you all doing with iStock?   What are your photo niches?

123RF / Bad photographer help at 123
« on: July 19, 2006, 08:30 »
Hey everyone,

I just want to see what you guys think about this scenario at 123RF:

Well as we all know its becoming one of the slower sites and, for me anyways, a bother to keep uploading to.  So I asked Mimi at 123 to contact me to discuss taking my pictures out and cashing out my $8.80 that I have on there since that site is a complete waste of time for me (no FTP, that stupid Java uploader makes my computer type funny when its on).

So it took her 2 days to get back to me, but I responded quickly - within the hour - and she hasn't gotten back to me yet - its been almost 3 days.

Now I know they are busy but I'm going to assume that they do not want to cash people out and give them their money so easily.  On my part its only $8.80 and I don't really care if its through Paypal or cheque or whatever, so I don't see why its proving to be such a hassle to take my photos off their site.

Any input is appreciated....I want to make sure that I'm not off the wall on this one.....as well, if anyone knows how to do a professional portrait mask (so that I can change the background when its difficult to isolate, I'd love to know how to do that)

Off Topic / Chromira prints - 20 x 30 - Any suggestions
« on: July 14, 2006, 09:28 »
Hi

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what the best way to print a 20 x 30 photo (its for a friend for his birthday) and I found a place in Toronto that will print it for about $35 CDN.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to print it another way?  As well, what is the best way to mount it/plaque it so that it will hang on the wall (also being a bit cost efficient - I have a maximum price of $130 CDN.

Just looking for suggestions since I've never done this before and I don't want it to turn out shotty.

Hey everyone,

I find that I have to do alot of post processing when it comes to  my landscape shots - as in exposure modifications, and shadows, and brightness.  Its always about 0.5 from the original picture from the camera, but I'm wondering if you other guys have the same issues where you have to do some post processing to get the picture to look the way you want.

Is that normal?  I'm using a Digital Rebel XT and I just want to make sure that its not broken in any way.

General Stock Discussion / The June Breakdown
« on: July 01, 2006, 09:24 »
Well, June is over.  It wasn't that bad for me considering its my 2nd month - I tripled my 1st month's earnings (which is nice, and I plan to try to triple June's earnings in July - who knows) and Shutterstock has emerged as the top dog.  iStock is next on my list.  Lets see what happens.

Anyhow, here's my breakdown (in brackets is the all-time breakdown)

Bigstock - 7% (8% overall)
Shutterstock - 42% (32% overall)
Dreamstime 20% (25% overall)
Fotolia - 8% (8% overall)
FeaturePics - 8% (6% overall)
123RF - 8% (17% overall)
StockXpert - 7% (5% oveall)

These % were done by Excel, so if its 1 percent off (like out of 101% or something) my apologies.

I hope everyone is doing well.  Good luck for July.

I recently came across the technique to create a new layer, do a high pass at around 1 pixel or so (i've gone as high as 8 or 9 pixels too) and then overlay that with the original layer to get more sharpening.

Just wondering what you guys use (for those with crappy lens kits like me :)).  I have been using both but the high-pass tends not to bring out noise as much.

Any comments?

Alamy.com / When's the FTP starting on Alamy
« on: June 28, 2006, 09:18 »
Does anyone know when the FTP/internet upload is starting on Alamy?  I'd like to get on them because my main goal is to build up cash to buy a CoolScan from Nikon, scan all my dad's 35mm and slide negatives and upload them onto there.  But I really don't want to go through the hassle of sending DVDs (and I haven't made anywhere near enough to buy that scanner).

If anyone could give me a date of when thats starting that would be great :)

Thanks

Shutterstock.com / Shutterstock's "fresh" image downloads
« on: June 26, 2006, 08:41 »
Everyone says that SS gets lots of downloads for new images while others get more later on.  How long is the "new image period" where images get lots of downloads and then slowly die off a bit for Shutterstock?  Just wondering since I'm a bit newer there.

As well, do image downloads increase linearly?  By that, I mean, if I have 60 images online, and I get 4 downloads a day, when I get 120, would I be getting 8 downloads a day?  180 at 12?

Thanks in advance
