Thanks, and now that I've ignored it, I'm much happier

252
if they are as useful as their peddlers say they are, the reviews will filter through the users, not the peddlers, and word will get out.

Thanks Leaf, I just hope you will be willing to police the situation to make sure no one signs up and abuses other places in the forum for this and they stick to designated area

Microstock Services / MicrostockGroup or internet marketplace
« on: April 24, 2009, 11:20 »
Its starting to feel like this place is becoming an Internet Marketplace instead of a place where we can share information on microstock and argue about iStock exclusivity.

I don't want to be peppered with photosecrets stupid teleconferences and I would really like it if Leaf could please make a separate area where we can block it from our accounts for those people who want to peddle their 'services' here.

And if they break the rules, I would want the post deleted immediately and the user banned from the forum.

I'm just suggesting this because I'm very tired of seeing this place become a SecondLife for photographers where its just advertising, not good conversation about the industry - and I'm sure that I'm not the only one.

Microstock Services / Re: Good $ per download tip
« on: April 22, 2009, 12:06 »
Wow, that routine is getting old.  VERY OLD.

I don't know why sites think by having someone post saying this site is great, then having the owner or a representative come to their defense is a good strategy.  I'm not going to go to the site because of these poor tactics, because I'm sick of it.

255
I think I am doing ok. I have 886 images with iStock.  436 downloads in Jan, 427 in Feb, 519 in Mar and 332 so far in april. I am averaging $1.06 per download. To me BM2 does not seem to have an impact either way. It did get a little slower around easter brake but that's all. Denis

This is a beautiful response.  I think that this is how it should be posted if you want to post that you are doing well/poorly compared to x weeks/months

Congrats on doing well so far Denis.

I guess you dont have better things to do with your time then what you are doing in this post Ichiro 17

Play nice, all people here are potential clients to you... I would try and convince Ichiro that my intentions are benign.

 :D

I'm going exclusive, so my workflow will be fairly smooth.  And I was at work (day job) so I didn't have much to do.  Thats why I've been more active.  I prefer to view from a distance in most posts.

Given RT's lovely post, I'm just going to add that I'm the type of person that will not give up the keywording even though its a horrible task because it involves access to my personal information.  I don't want to give that away.  If you find someone willing, thats great, but I'm in the group of people that will never look for such a service.  If I was, I would go out and hire a team.  Thats my opinion, and I wish you well.

how about some figures to back it up? how about everyone post some figures if they are going to say things are normal.  Because seriously, I'm sick of guessing if the post is a legitimate one or something from someone who just wants to post

Seriously, Its not all about the Pros here.   What and when am I allowed to post without bothering someone?   All of us started with 1 picture...

we may all have started with one picture, but when you are still starting and have 40, 60, 100 pics, do you really think that getting one download last week and no downloads this week is a trend?  And what some people may scream about, others will just say its normal

Those little bars are lovely, but don't tell the story.  I'm not the admin, moderator or whatever, but for you to post and have a meaningful post, then say yeah, I'm getting on average 5 more downloads or 3 more dollars per day than pre-best match 2.0

Its not hard.  Back up statements with numbers.  Its expected everywhere else in the world, why not here?

I wouldnt want a contract per say but more a non disclosure agreement and a copy of passport is also a good idea.

You want a copy of the persons passport !!

This is the dumbest sequence of ideas I've seen in a while.  First you want passwords, and access, now you want passports?  Who are you? and why are there people gullible enough to give you what you ask?

260
Yep its a sea of red in the charts, and my results are reflecting this also. Day 1 was great - but after that its been looking pretty grim.

How many images do you have online? I would like to be able to put a figure to comment above.  Also, how many downloads do you have?

What bothers me the most is someone with 127 images and 42 downloads in an year complain that things are slow.  When were they ever fast? Seriously...

I don't like when people post 'enthusiastically' with referral in mind.  I believe that goes against some written or unwritten code or some standard that this group used to be based on

262
Same thing as usual, the buyers need to learn to use it and utilize it to their needs.  They will figure it out and sales will go back to a 'normal' level.  some will gain, others will lose a bit

263
And contracts are so effective if I get ripped off and the other party runs off to a country with a) no laws, b) not a care for contract law, or c) just somwhere you cannot be found, what is that contract worth?

This is a horrible idea and someone is too lazy to upload their own photos, perhaps you should find some other way to make money.

People are complaining they dont' make enough money per download.  Add to it overhead of paying someone else to upload, where do you get to keep the money you earn in this business?

264
I'm glad everyone thinks its a great idea to give up passwords and usernames to someone who has a reference or two.  Who knew it could be so easy

265
No one who is serious would do this

No one who isn't serious is going to pay you to upload their photos

No one will give you their account and password

I don't see where you are going with this

Flemish - in response to your post #53 above...

I basically agree with all you stated. The wrong message for the wrong audience. Ellen Boughn is a fine example of somebody very credible about stock and who doesn't shoot herself. The CV of Ellen on the other hand is very precise with names and dates. Researching sources like Google reveals Beate Chelette sold "a" photo agency (which one?) once to what sounds like Corbis but especially that she wrote a book about some new age  "ego rythm", the kind of voodoo that only gullible desperate housewives fall for.

Apart from that, the landing page is garish, slick and contains no hard info whatsoever, except an address form in which you have to fill in your home address. It is obviously written for search bots and SEO, not for humans, with high-ranking Google keywords in bold and 10 (!) times "free".

Quote
Before you tell someone to get lost, make sure you know that your paths never will cross - because you just don't know where they end up and your success could depend on their opinion somewhere down the road.

Did you feel threatened?  ;)

Just because someone sold a photo agency to Corbis doesn't mean that the agency was good or Corbis is at all competent.  We've noticed that part B of that equation is far from competent, so it coudl definitely have been a giant waste of money?

Canon / Re: My little 5Dmk2 noise test
« on: April 17, 2009, 11:20 »
i have one of these sweet babies, and its great.  but badly lit shots are not the best way to do a test.  and no, i don't think those are 100% crops.

If badly lit shots aren't the way to do these tests then what is? Surely you don't flick the camera up to ISO 25600 in broad daylight? If you have decent light then you don't really need high ISO do you?

I do agree that 100% tells you nothing though. You'd be hard pressed to see a difference between my Oly E30 and the 5DII at ISO3200 at that size - but I can assure you that up close it isn't really a pretty picture.

You also aren't going to publish crap pictures with horrible white balance.  And the idea is to use the camera in situations where noise was a problem before.  Maybe an arena, or outside at night, or something else, or something in daylight that needs faster shutterspeeds

Shutterstock.com / Re: would I do well on SS?
« on: April 17, 2009, 11:12 »
I think you should check whether or not you would have to remove your portfolio because it is uploaded under the exclusivity status first.  If not, and you feel like going through the pain of uploading to SS and their horribly subjective review process, go for it.  I would stay exclusive and just shoot more.  You will be GOLD soon too.

General Photography Discussion / Spain and Portugal
« on: April 15, 2009, 14:30 »
Hey all,

Leaving in 2 weeks for a 2 week trip through Spain starting in Lisbon.

Just wanted to know if anyone had any favourite places to photograph in:

Lisbon
Seville
Madrid
Mallorca
Valencia (will be going to the Arts and Sciences for sure!)
and Barcelona for the F1 race

I've looked up all the interesting places online, but would like to hear from anyone who's actually been.  Hopefully I can pull together a large portfolio of stock worthy images while I'm there too.

JG

You are impressing me so much by quoting Paris Hilton

273
The Shutterstock Forum would be a better place to start a thread "shameless self promotion" Serious.
:D :D How very true.

There are some people there you can team up with for sure. Search for "workshop" on forums.

Ahh those people...sometimes they post their stuff here - about 123RF is the most recent.   We are so lucky to be graced with his presence once in a while so that hey can let us know that he's still around, even though no one cares.
