Alamy.com / Re: Alamy restrict Russian sales on request
« on: March 11, 2022, 06:47 »
So here's another way to shoot ourselves in the foot?
I don't know if I have had any Russia sales ever, but I won't ask my work to be boycotted.

Edited to add: Much prefer Dreamstime's take on this.

you prefer a take where you do not have a choice?  Alamy gave people a choice what to do, you still want to sell to Russia, No Problem, You don't fine we will limit it.  In fact this is the opposite of #CancelCulture, this is Freedom of Choice.

If I understand correctly "cleared" sale means, that a customer paid for that image to alamy. For example date of invoice shows, when sale was made, and then cleared section (usually it's cleared 1,5-2 months later) shows, when was money received for that sale. "Paid" section shows a month, when I was paid for that particular sale.

Now if 4 sales were cleared in July and paid to me in August, shouldn't that fifth sale, that was also cleared in July paid to me in August?

Generally Yes.  what did Contributor support say?

And what are Alamy thinking, an UK/Europe based agency trying to compete with the Chinese prices in the Chinese market? What reality are they living in?

worse, giving free reins to a Chinese company to do it for them, with what seems a pretty free going agreement.

Sales through Alamy gets you 40% of gross, distributor sales gets you 30% of gross, so I you got 30% thats distributor sale in my opinion.

Yes and I made an example, but: 15 cents  +(- .045) +(- .06) = +.045 commission - also makes me see that the .045 in the front is rounded up to .05 and the .045 for the contributor is rounded down to .04 ? They just picked up a half cent that way. Slick accounting in their favor?

it's actually 60% For Alamy of whatever is left after Distributor commission not 50%

Show me that math I can't see how you got 60%

it's what the contract says.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Year to Year Poll comparison
« on: January 06, 2022, 06:54 »

Yes, that's true, Wilm. But I meant there's a lot of high earners here on the MSG forum - the people most likely to vote on this Microstock Poll, not all 1.6m contributors.

Pete, help! (lol)

I am really not sure if that's true. There's a couple, but I am always surprised by how often people who post here regularly and I assumed did this for a living (or even have blogs and channels devoted to the industry) say things like I had an EL on SS so that made a big difference/ doubled my income for the month.

Theres a lot of people who post enthusiastically because this is a hobby they are passionate about, rather than because they are big earners or pros. Absolutely nothing wrong with that at all but it can be misleading.

same with people not meeting the second level threshold at Alamy, which i would have expected would be a minimum for someone who took time to upload there for years. Even with 20% drop in gross fees, that still means they were making less than $150 a year before.  again nothing wrong,

I like the way they combined all threads about it, then locked it and finally moved it to a quieter spot of the forum  ;D

next step: Closing Forums altogether.  all the same

In truly ridiculous SS news, apparently calendar images each year are now off the table because they are "too similar".  So, anyone needing 2022 or years forward will just have to use 2018 or something.

"Our policy for accepting similar content has been continuously evolving, although it is a different year indeed, the images are the same that were submitted previously. We aim to meet the needs of our customers who are looking for diverse content and the needs of our contributors who are producing a variety of images in one shoot. Please allow me to clarify the reason for these rejections.

I understand that previously some images were being accepted at a higher rate. Still, since we have updated our review policies, many of the new content uploaded might not be accepted as per the updates. To help you navigate this nuanced policy, we have prepared a Similar Content article. Among these updates, its highlighted that many of the rejections reasons now include the Similar Content review policy, which has stricter guidelines compared to the previous one we had in place."

When I pointed out the port in the first post to show how dumb this was, ....
"I understand your frustration. The portfolio you have reported had these images approved before the change in the similar content policy. The rules on what is considered to be content that is too similar to accept into our collection have been tightened to meet the ongoing customer demand for fresh content with variety."

Which is why I spend little to no time on SS.

was that an SS reply, or one of their "valued contributor who doesn't work for SS" front line canned answer support?

Well for me Wirestock is the best decision i made when it comes to stock. The competition is today simply to large plus royalties much less then it was 10 years ago. It is now all about efficiency.

Wirestock will bring you quickly on a higher earning level on sites as Shutterstock or Alamy. Next to earnings there is also a huge saving of time. I used to spend to many hours with the submittion process. Now it are just minutes.

They are just for a short time on the market and in short time they envolved very fast. They improve every day. I feel that i am sitting in the right boat.

Finally the end of logging into several agency websites. Now simply one place with the whole process plus statistics and pay outs.

biggest positive today i got $10 payout from the Dreamstime Component.  No need to wait months to get up to $100.

« on: January 02, 2022, 09:06 »
However anyone looks at the arrangement that Shutterstock has implemented, IT IS A COLD HEARTED SCAM perpetrated by Jon Oringer and his side kick Stan Pavlovsk, to steal money from the talent.

These two are nothing more than low life criminals pertaining to be running a business.

Anyone who is still uploading to help these two is insane.

The way forward in the Western World is a change in the law for companies like this, there should be a 'Stakeholders Law' which basically gives all the contributors a equal vote on what happens to the money.

if that's your definition of Scam, most for profit business are a Scam, as they take away from someone to pay bosses and shareholders

This "distributor" is just acquiring these for resale. It couldn't be more obvious.

I'm giving Alamy about a day to respond and then I'm closing the account. A sad end for a once great company.

office staff are off until next week, so likely will not address it in a day

For the sake of balance, if you mention 7cent sales I feel I have an obligation to also mention the huge sales that may occur at Alamy. Two of my examples from the 8 months. $250+ gross each x 40% for the net.

For the "sake of balance" I must mention that I just got about 20 sales of $0.04 each!  ::)
Yey!

Happy New Year to you too!  :-*

these distributor deals are ridiculous.  Glad i opted out.

I dont understand why removing logos etc from the buildings makes an image non-editorial. The place and buildings and boat are still recognizable.

Official from their site, including the link:

What do I get with Extra Channels?

Extra Channels provides you with additional opportunities to make money with your content. We constantly seek new partnerships with brands, stock photo agencies, print-on demand marketplaces, API integrations and other platforms to expand the market for our creators and maximise sales for every image uploaded to Wirestock.

We are frequently approached by different companies who want to purchase content from Wirestock. We find the best marketplaces, agencies and brands for your images and videos. All sales through Extra Channels are reported on your dashboard, with specific information about each source. Pricing and royalty rates vary based on your content, partner type and overall demand.

What is the Instant Pay Program?

Wirestock has partnered with several platforms that pay for content on a one time basis, in advance, as opposed to paying per download. Creators who choose to enroll in the Instant Pay Program (IPP), will be paid for each image selected by every IPP partner.

Our IPP partners include stock photo marketplaces, designer tools, business promotion tools and other platforms that offer commercial content to their customers.

Once the content is purchased through IPP, our partners can distribute it through their platforms according to their pricing model or use it for their own projects.

Which marketplaces, agencies and partners does Wirestock work with?

Here is the list of marketplaces and agencies that Wirestock works with: Shutterstock, Adobe, Alamy, Dreamstime, Pond5, Depositphotos, 123RF, Science Photo Library, Freepik (Instant Pay), Canva.

Wirestock also licenses content to businesses such as brands, marketing agencies and creative studios directly as part of Extra Channels. We are always looking to expand the number of content partners we work with to maximize your earnings.

https://wirestock.io/faq?q=instantPay

So tell me again how they hide the truth about how they distribute, and did this without your knowledge? It's on the site, it's in the (i) when you submit an image, it's in the terms and FAQ.

if anything i find they have actually made it harder to select that option (or i am now missing a new process)

By collapsing the checkboxes for channels I find I many times forget to add it since I would not have it automatically, and they seem to have removed user input management of channels after approval

« on: December 02, 2021, 13:49 »
but i produce 50 MP pictures and it a shame to downsize them to 20 or less.

In my view, this is the wrong approach! You get between $0.10 and $0.20 for most downloads, and with the revenue you worry about the generous buyer only getting a 20 MP photo? How many downloads do you need to even begin to recoup the cost of an equimpment that allows 50MP?

From a financial point of view, I think you need to rethink!

That's my answer too. Just downsize and move on. Giving away 50MP images for a dime is not going to make more than giving away 10MP images for a dime. And if the 10MP images come from that 50MP camera (what the heck is that?) and you are downsizing, you'll have almost no rejections for focus, pixelation, grain, soft or any of the other absurd rejections from the SS Bots.

in addition to less time creating file, faster upload, less storage, less resubmission.

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy Demographic Survey
« on: November 18, 2021, 10:33 »
Hi All,

Hopefully I can add some clarity here.

Firstly, this survey is 100% optional and anonymous. We will end up with % numbers against the survey questions with no identifiable information next to the answers. The data itself is not accessible other than to view results as a summary and there is absolutely zero chance of us "selling this data on" (as has been suggested in this thread).

Picture buyers in the publishing world are increasingly interested in this type of information, and when I say interested, I'm not talking about us "tapping into" some kind of trend.

We have face to face meetings with world leading publishers who ask us specific questions about where the images on Alamy come from and who takes them. They are keen to source images from a diverse mix of providers that demonstrate equal opportunities and ethical dealings. This subject has become increasingly common in our client meetings over recent times and we felt that we did not have the right level of information to inform them, but also closer to home, we want to make sure we are operating in an ethical and inclusive way.

That is the reason as to why this has been sent. The format, wording and distribution method we've chosen has been reviewed at all levels within the business and signed off by the in-house legal team within PA Media.

I hope this clears up any confusion around the survey, if you have any specific questions then please feel free to email [email protected] and the Contributor Releations team will be happy to help.

Many thanks,

James Allsworth
Head of Content

when questioned about it on their own forum, they Twice deleted threads instead of interacting with their own posters.

Certainly a few months ago and last year it was an issue.
Theory is the initial AI screening works out a "sharpness" score with a threshold and foliage, leaves confuses it.
Similar issue with video as well.

Their AI screening ask for too much sharpness...  I once sent a perfectly sharp and well focused image and it was rejected. Had to overprocess the sharpening to get accepted.

thanks
Then you will get rejected on other sites for over processed.  :o That's a joke but it's also true.

If the sunsets are especially stunning there's a chance they'll sell

Mine aren't. I don't know how anyone finds them to download. 11,419,303 sunset stock photos
Even if they selected the subject: 77,427 sunset corn stock photos

ps Download by keywords show nothing. I have no idea? I have 35 images with the keyword "Sunset" I think 20 are legitimately, mostly a Sunset image, while others are taken at Sunset.

I'm not complaining, I'm just amazed that they got any downloads at all, but the total in catalog manager is 12 DLs.

Off Topic / Re: Hippos a thread to environment
« on: October 17, 2021, 16:58 »
Title should be altered to reflect that the hippos in question are not in their natural distribution range.

OP in the typical Internet bait headline, we should be used to that after being pounded with them, all day, every day.

But a small fact: The hippo is responsible for more human fatalities in Africa than any other large animal. (the mosquito kills more people) Male hippos actively defend their territories which run along the banks of rivers and lakes. Hippos can run at speeds of over 20 miles an hour and they have enormous jaws which host up to 20 inch canines.

Right, Escobar's hippos are a threat because they aren't there naturally.

hippos are actually number 2 for  larger mammals in causing deaths in Africa.  the other one however uses tools like guns, cars and many more ;-)
