Great, now everyone is gonna be a videographer! Hahahah!

Just kidding! :) what is the future of video?

Maybe motion design (lot less competition than videos) and movie quality videos (but you must have some knowledge
also about compositing and color grading)
I'm focused on motion design (2d and 3d) and scientific/medical animation.
Time will tell :)

123RF / Re: Is it the end of 123rf
« on: January 30, 2020, 15:02 »
123RF was a decent earner for me , but last two years, well, not anymore...
About $60/$90 month...with about 4500 images...
I stopped uploading some month ago, maybe i'll try to upload some of my new contents and see what happens :)

I sell vector stock illustrations and I have been doing it as full time job for years now.
I think now there is much more competition than few years ago as the numbers of contributors keeps growing, but you can surely give it a try. I am learning about animation now as I think in the future it will be more requested.
I think to get a good result you need to focus on it full time for some months at least, you cant expect to have immediate results.

where do you live?

I agree, videos (especially motion graphics and cg animation) will be the stars in the next years! Obviously they will not stand forever but it's part of this business.."adapt or die" (third option...complain)  :D
PS ciao Elena, sono Luca :)

I know asking for what you shoot is a touchy subject. But for the ones that have been doing it full time what things have worked for you apart from finding an absolutely amazing niche to specialize in? What have you automated, are you employing people, what ways of ideation?

Hi,
the only things that work for me are:
1) constant uploads
2) raise the quality bar :)

Some years ago i wrote a little tool for keywording. It's a crap piece of code, full of bugs,
but i use it everyday to speedup the process. I work alone (i refused some collaboration proposals).
Usually i start with a concept and i try to find new ways to illustrate it, nothing special :)

Pond5 is a low earner for me...about 100/150 $/month
But it's slowly increasing, so i have some hope.
Time will tell...

I totally agree with you and that's been my experience of creatives in my 15 years at Adobe.  You're not wrong. If you're honest about always trying to improve and don't get stuck in one style (very easy to do in motion design), then you'll always be in demand.  Stick with it and hopefully Stock is a part of your revenue stream.

Cheers,
Dennis

Hi Dennis,
your words are like a RedBull for me! Pure energy! :)
And yes, i like to explore different styles, 2d flat design, isometric, realistic 3d... and always trying new ways
to communicate concepts and ideas.
I especially love After Effects, such a powerful tool, and with plugins like Stardust, Plexus, Element3d (to name a few)...
Well, the sky is the limit!
Thanks for your kind words!

i'm always searching for alternatives. But my main goal is to become better and better in what i like to do, 3d and motion design :) As i've already said, a talented artist will always find a job (hope i'm not wrong) :)

Not sure about that with todays pricing.

Yes, pricing isn't low, but i don't see alternatives. Here in Italy you cannot bury your dear in the garden, so you
have to follow the law :)

why shocked?= video is the next dead thing...or people believe to live all life earning a lot per video sales, with a couple thousand video?
everybody is shooting video, bigger producer from eastern europe are moving their production towards video...soon there will be the same saturation and the same price for video as was photo. milk till it last is my suggestion don't hope to earn the same, if not producing thousand and thousand of video per year....and the fact that a super company like hotel is struggling, they make a site where they give all collection for penny if i remember correctly, and move all new production to cheaper drone content should tell those who believe video will be immune from the downward trend. no it's not immune and price soon will collapse to a bunch of dollar per download.

Only funeral homes will stay forever.
As i said on another thread, if you want to survive in this business, you need high quality work, and to be prepared to adapt to the changes of the market.
BTW i love your positive attitude  ;D

General Stock Discussion / Re: Alamy - is it worth it?
« on: October 21, 2019, 13:51 »
is it worth it?
for me, not...
My illustrations and 3d render don't sell well on Alamy, maybe i'm not the target of their customers.
They don't accept videos, so i'm thinking to stop uploading and move on...maybe i'll submit to their 'stokimo'
platform, just for fun :)

iStockPhoto.com / Re: September numbers...
« on: October 21, 2019, 12:13 »
Why is anyone still uploading there?

These rates are an insult

Because, despite the rates, they are still 25% of my income.  And do you have suggestions for sites that are going to make me more money than that?  I see people saying all the time that they are no longer going to upload to iStock/Getty, Shutterstock, etc.  Those are my biggest earners after Adobe. Unless someone knows of some secret site that is making a ton of money, why leave the biggest earning sites?

I absolutely agree with you!!!

The rates are indeed an insult. However, like most of us, I do microstock for a profit, so I have a look at the numbers.

In terms of revenue, IS is the second highest earner. In terms of RPI, it's the first, ex-aequo with SS. In terms of RPD, it fluctuates, but it's usually the second or the third, after Alamy and SS.

So, yes, I have the feeling IS is taking a lot from me, and that the way they treat us is outrageous. However, there are some financial reasons explaining why I'm staying... more or less the same reasons that push me to have a main job where I'm not very well treated...

same for me

This is very sad to read that you guys keep job that your are not very well treated... !  :'(  Those company won't stop to act like that if your stay, for financial reason only. You deserved better. Everybody deserved better.

Busisness choices. it's all about business and moneys. I agree, i deserve better...if you know how to achieve it, please, let me know. iI'm on my 56, freelancer since 1991, but i'm ready to learn something new! Feel free to give some good advice!  :)

« on: October 18, 2019, 00:48 »
I afraid the same will happen with videos in a very close future (2-3 years) as it is happening now with images.
However I am shooting more and more videos now, and it really pays off. Videos give me 3-5 times more profit when compared with photos from the same trip. But it takes me 1-2 weeks to post process all the videos, and 1-2 months to do the same with the images. And video sales went from 0 to 600-700$ a month very quickly. Of course it is not comparable with my photo portfolio, nevertheless it looks promising.

Yes i agree, maybe a bit more then 2-3 years. But i'm enjoying the moment. Congratulation for your result :)

because you think that movie or cgi or motion design will give u forever 29 dollar 39  79...ahahah good luck soon you will realize the hard truth...video like photos will be sold for penny and competition will kill your earning...it's the same as photos, you can see already agency going sub, selling video for penny, soon even video will be a complete disaster.
alternative is a business made with direct customer who pay lot of money for single job.

i'm not saying that cg or motion design will stay forever...obviously they will evolve to something else...maybe something like vr
or interactive videos or...
But, a talented photographer or motion designer will always find a job. I love microstock but, if i'll find my earnings fall, i'll move to something else.

For me new images sell after a few days/weeks, but new videos take at least 6 month to roll out.
But overall, i'm happy with my earnings, growing every year. Full time since 2012. I live in Italy (Expensive North Italy).
Honestly, i think that if you are a photographer you are out of game due to competition (unless your are a top one with
expensive models and locations or if you have a niche). The future is movie quality footage and stills.
Yes, lot of expenses, but i know several people doing well, so...
Alternatives? motion graphics, cg animations, templates. This is a dynamic business and i think that you must adapt to it to
be succesful. This is what i'm trying to do.
Best wishes to all!  :)

hi all,
i'm an emerald contributor of Fotolia/AS with growing sales. I'm a motion designer focused on 3d/2d motion design and infographics.
My new works sell better then my older ones. I think that the key is regular upload and high (very high) quality content.
Complainig on this forum, for me, is a waste time and not a productive way to conduct this business.
But...you are free to spend you time as you wish  :)

on istock i have only 50% of my portfolio (about 2700 images and 400 videos),
but i'm around 400/600$ every month (little over 600 on august)...not so bad...
