Yeah, Ed Levin is still there, gang bangers use it for target practice.  Spring Valley Golf Course which boarders EL now has houses all around it.

I flamed at CanStockPhoto, no downloads since Sept 06,  I think they have very few buyers and I hardly ever go there anymore.

a little late reply, but,,,,

I've a rental car and one week time - so I'm not really bound to San Jose. Everything in driving distance of 1-3 hours is ok.

The only thing 3 hours outside downtown san jose is traffic and more san jose.  It's only 20 miles across, but up the 101 or 880 it's constant traffic jam.  I once went from Saratoga to my sisters house in northridge,  25 miles, 2 1/2 hours.

If it's more than an hour away, figure three times that.

I'd like to see some of your work when you return, provide us with a link OK?

San Jose basically sucks.  I went to college there.  Downtown there's St. James park, where the kidnappers of the Hart baby were lynched, other than that, there's been soo much renovation of first and second street that much of the character of the city is gone.

In and around SJ there's some neat places if development hasn't ruined them.  Alviso, Saratoga, Los Gatos, Campbell.  Or you can take Alum Rock avenue up to Lick observatory, bring a polarizor to cut through the smog.

If you go to the east side, carry a gun.

My best advice for what kind of trip would be a fast one.

General Stock Discussion / Re: No clear focal point

Hey Bob, glad you came out of the closet (not that closet, the other one) ;D

I have a different interperetation for no clear focal point.

There's no movement.  the photo is flat, the eye doesn't roam  around the subject to provide a definite focal point.   In the photo you referencing, I focus on the yellow tooth, not cool.

It's an old "fine arts" concept which most of us have forgotten with isolations and all.

CJPhoto:  Ya gotta be jokin!

Everybody wants to be like the best, or better than the best.  The best photographer, the best designer, the best sailor ( I already got that one) , the best.....well, you name it.  And how do we do it?  by learning from the best and bringing our own "thing" to the party.

So you thought this was going to be a short thread about one of the most talked about and copied artists in our group.......HAH!

See guys,

You'll never see superman and laurin in the same room!

Laurin, I think everyone admires you and they're probably engaging in  tugging of the King's beard.  I've never seen your gallery, but I have seen a lot of your posts, I'm glad there's some like you that tell it like it is.

Your energy is stimulating.

eendicott & professorgb:

That's some pretty severe weather for electronics, do or did you ever have any problems with the camera shutting down, battery drain, lens frosting etc.  Just wondering in case I ever get to see snow or ice, and what do you do to prevent equipment failure?

Sometimes I think he tends towards hyperbole.  I don't know how he can review along with all the other things he's in to.  Let's see, professional glamour photographer, landscape designer and maintenance, photo school, stock photographer, and about 3 other hats I've missed.

I've heard he consults with reviewers, but probably part time. Where can he find the time?  Wait a minute, where's superman.  Have you ever noticed you've never seen superman and rinder at the same time?

tgt:  "mine's going to these $1,000 a month gas & electric bills I'm getting every month this winter. "

There ya go, another reason to hate winter.

How many months do you get $1K energy bills?  compute that at compound interest for so many months, and after 10 years, you might be able to put your kid through college.

PROMOTE GLOBAL WARMING, Drive a HumVee, squeeze cows (I forgot, this is an Intl forum - cows the second largest producer of methane on the planet),  and, don't kill termites (the largest source of methane gas on the planet), Some scientist measured, uhhhhh, termite and animal farts,  with a US government grant and  came up with that conclusion.

At least as digipros we don't burn up a lot of cellulose film, and dump silver oxides down the drain.

Nice pics, just one question on the second, do you have to P in the hole before you fish?

I don't know why, but the music:  "Hey-bob-a-re-bob" kept running through my head.  No, that's Wabasha.

Just joking, looks like a great time.  Are those pikes or muskies?  I'm not up on fresh water fish.  Yeah, I've heard about the big one that got away before.....never used it myself.

Go for it!  And, let us know how you do.  If the talent is there, so are the bucks if that's what you want.

Some of us are into stock because that's what we do and like an addiction can't help it, some who have created a niche and are making the bucks and gain the recognition, some because it's a hobby, and some just for the appreciation that somebody used our pic for something.

And then there's fine art.  Anything and everything on earth has been photographed, but nothing has been photographed til it's been done thru your eyes.  That's what makes it different.

Go for it and good luck

We'd probably all be taking pictures anyway,

BBBrrrrrrrr.  Jeeese now I've got to turn the heater back on again.  Anything under 59 degrees should be left to the bears and penguins-just joking-

I've lived in Halifax, Madrid, Penticton, Milwaukee, Toronto, and Montreal, in addition to Mexico DF, Porto Negro Brasil, and now So Cal.  Porto Negro was the best, just can't speak portuguese.

What's got me confused is if we're going into a global warming period, should I go north, but what if it's global cooling, then south...dedisions, decisions. As long as Pelosi gets her big jet I guess there's no problem with any climate changes and it's a bunch of hooeeey

Lately, in the forums and different sites we all belong, all you see are snow pics.  Ice, snow, sleet, skis, snowmobiles - Theres a photographer with the handle "freezing images", that I gotta turn on the heater to view his portfolio, and it's really great--but cold--and I hate cold.

So, as you know, and you're probably getting tired of me saying it, I'm leaving for a couple years and need crew.  This last weekend, the temperatures hit the 80's here in So California, about 45 mi north of LA, mild santanas were blowing (warm air out of the north), so I decided to audition crew on an overnighter to our offshore islands.  Yes "audition" cause I need people shots.  This is a mother/son combo.  Both of us are qualified with Master's degrees and can home school through High School.

Anyway, here's a couple shots, she's only about 28 years younger than me-no chicken hawk comments, this is strictly professional ;D-  I'm really getting desperate for crew.

Comments?

Special note to Tyler,  This is what sailing is all about!

Life's a bitch ain't it.  Today, I put on my shorts to go to the beach and the temperature dropped to 70 degrees and I shivered so much I couldn't hold the camera steady  enough to take pics of the bikini babes playing vollyball.

God! I hate winter!!!

Thanks IR, I guess I'd better discuss this further with my IP (son)

Leaf wrote:   "scoot across the ocean up by greenland"

Nah, like Jimmy Buffett wrote "going where the weather suits my clothes"

I don't think shorts and t shirts will work in the northern clime all year long.  Last time I came back to CA it took me a month to get used to frigid 75 degree weather ;D

Although, I did live 6 years in Spain and really miss the Med.

WOW!

What a great bunch of replys  It sounds like blog is the way to go for me.  My son is hosting it so I don't have any charges, and he's already registered a name, and showed me how to get on it - I forgot how.

The idea is to keep everybody informed of what I'm up to and show some low res pictures.  I've registered on smugmug and alamy, in addition to the 10 or so stock sites.  In addition I hope to get published in some of the cruising mags, particularly when in guatamalan waters.

Hey leaf, I am looking for crew for some of the passages, I already have some booked, and I guess I'll show it on this blog thing and what's open and when.  I plan on being about a year in Mex.  Guat. then CR. then comes decision time. ;D ;D

Now that I've retired my Canon A1 due to shutter failure and the cost to repair is more than I paid for it in 1978, I guess it's time to move completely into the digital age.  Web site or blog?

My son is a web site developer and he's offered (read after a lot guilt laid on him from me) to build either one for free.  From what I can gather, a web site needs more technical skills to update and if updated on a frequent basis could become very work intensive.  A blog, on the other hand can be updated by me whenever I can without a lot of effort.
Am I wrong?

I will be on a more extensive voyage for the next 5-7 years, down the west coast, baja, sea of cortez, guatamala, costa rica, and then into the south pacific - or - back up through panama and into the caribe.

Which format (site or blog) do you more experienced technical people suggest.  Something that I can update from rather remote locations although with internet connections, show some pictures, and make a log of the trip for friends, family, and interested persons?

Suggestions and experience with these formats is appreciated

Here's an interesting link - if I did it right -  http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1018&message=21672636

It may be that Alamy was once more fine art related?

Adelaide.  "I received an email saying I had a request from a visitor"

Yeah, me too.  I think they're trying to build their site and are sending out emails to attract new artists.  That's OK, and I don't see anything wrong with uploading some pics.  You never know who will be the next big name is stock.

Thanks for the advice, I've done what was mentioned above and came out with pretty good results.

It takes a while, even with 4 gig of RAM with 90% dedicated to PS. when I upres to 300 I can go have a cup of tea and it's still working, but it generally comes out eventually.

I'll try the 999dpi, it makes sense that it would work better with some of the tools.
